Safari, conjures up beautiful imagery, The wilds of Africa. Endless grasslands which are teeming with wildlife, antelope, zebras, giraffe, buffalo, rhino and herds of elephant all share this beautiful world. But they are being watched and observed by fierce African predators, lions, cheetah, leopards, wild dogs and hyenas lie in wait to ambush these creatures, this game of life and death plays out every day and every night.

Watching sunsets as the African red blood sun sets below the horizon signalling to the nocturnal creatures that their part in the African safari has begun, hyenas cackle, jackals cry in unison, and the roar of the lion deafens them all. The prey gathers in groups as they look to shadows and smell the night air hoping that they will not be a casualty of the night.

Sunrise can not come quick enough for these creatures, the mist and cold air of the dawn and tip of the sun rising in the east is met with a sense of joy and relief. The antelope run and jump for joy as they have survived to live another day in the harsh and terrible beauty that is called Africa.

The thrill of photographing this action or capturing tender moments between animals as they meet and greet each other

are the moments that wildlife photographers live for.

It is imperative that we photographers who may only have a fraction of a second to capture these unique moments do so with both accuracy and confidence.

Being able to photograph African wildlife is a childhood dream come true. I had a steep learning curve in becoming a wildlife photographer, and I would like to share a few tips and tricks that I have learnt along the way.

I first would like to discuss the gear and technicals required for a successful safari. Then I will share my knowledge of how to capture memorable photographs.

Gear is always an emotive topic, I have used 35mm film cameras, DSLRs and now Fujifilm's mirrorless equipment. As the cliche suggests a camera is just a tool, and it is the photographer that creates the image.

Yes, it is true to a certain degree but having the right tool for the job at hand makes it easier.

I chose Fujifilm for size and the EVF; I knew from the start the AF system was a work in progress. I am glad to say that five years on the Autofocus is not an issue anymore.

Camera choice may be subjective, but your lens choice will be crucial for a successful safari. Lens choice does depend on one thing? Self-drive safari vs organised safari.

Self-drive safari means driving yourself around a game reserve; the majority of these game reserves have strict rules about driving, no off the roading allowed which in turn means subjects are further away, requiring a long telephoto 600mm(35mm).

If you are on an organised safari where you gave a guide and 4x4 vehicle generally some form of off-road driving is allowed, you will be able to get closer to your subjects; you will only need a medium telephoto or a 70-200mm zoom.

Having chosen the right equipment for your safari, the next important and probably the most crucial is setting up the camera's menu. I will share my setup with Fujifilm's XH-1 as Fujifilm's menu and features are basically the same on all the cameras.

Shoot Raw, if your editing skills are not up to scratch or you are still learning, shoot Raw plus Jpeg, ensure the Jpeg colour space is set to Adobe 1998.

The dynamic range I leave on "Auto" all the other features in Image quality setting I leave alone if you want to change the settings, for sharpness, highlights etc. for how your Jpeg will look that is up to you, as I shoot Raw these settings are irrelevant. For Wildlife I like using the Film Simulation Provia for how the colour that appears in the EVF.

AF MF

Probably the most misunderstood and the root of the majority of unsharp images. First I will start with the correct settings for capturing action images,

I have my camera Iso set on Auto, from 200-6400. The shutter speed to freeze action must be a minimum of a 1/1000 if the light allows you to set it higher, do so. If the sun is low and the Iso is maxed out 6400, and your shutter speed drops below 1/500 for your long telephoto lens or your XF100-400mm zoom, then engage Fujifilms "OIS" optic image stabilisation on the side of the lens.

Drive Setting

I choose CM; I find it the happy medium, pardon the pun, as the burst rate is perfect for action, not too slow that I miss the action, and not to fast that I reach the buffer limit too quickly.

Shutter Type, "MS"; Flicker reduction "On"; Iso auto setting I set to base Iso 200 and max sensitivity to 6400.

Minimum Shutter speed 1/500, I would love Fujifilm to have 1/1000 as the minimum shutter speed.

This setting is essential for sharp images "Is Mode" must be set to "Shooting Only" for still images as "Continuous" mode is for video only and your still images will be soft if set to this mode.

Screen Mode

Leave all at factory setting except, Image Disp turn "Off" irritating if left on as every picture captured will show in EVF as you press the shutter.

Preview EXP, WB in Manual mode; Preview EXP/WB.

Button/Dial Setting

Focus Lever Setting "On",

Function (Fn) Settings we all have different "Fn" buttons set up to whatever our priorities may be.

I use back focus, make sure the AF-On button is set to "AF". I am a fan of the back focus button as it allows me to create compositions without losing focus on the subject. How I wish Fujifilm would make this button bigger!

Power Management, set to "Boost" this can be activated on the battery grip.

Metering mode I leave on "Multi" mode metering the majority of the time; however, in some tricky lighting situations, I may use spot metering to get a more accurate exposure.

If you are photographing action/wildlife, remember to switch camera focusing to "C" continuous to keep track of focus of moving subjects.

I think I have covered everything of importance there may be another setting you use and you may not agree with my way of shooting, and that is fine, whatever works for you, it is the results that matter.

Lastly, I want to discuss some valuable tips and tricks to help you get the best photographs while on safari.

Be ready! Have your camera switched "on" with correct settings? The last thing you want to happen is to have the camera switched off and with wrong settings when the action kicks off.

Charge your batteries, carry spare batteries. Nothing worse while in the field photographing and you run out of battery power.

Make sure you format your memory card to your camera body. Always carry spare memory cards.

Always use lens hoods, avoid unnecessary lens flare and dust. Carry at least two lenses, one telephoto and one wide angle. Know how to switch on the lens stabilisation mode,

Know your Fstops from your Bus stops.

Use a stable platform whenever possible; avoid hand holding unless you have no choice.

Blurr busy backgrounds by shooting wide open this will focus the viewer's eye on the subject and not distracting background.

Always try and focus on the eye of the subject to make an engaging portrait. Use your wide angle lens to show "the animal within its environment." Sounds easy, but it can be challenging to create an exciting photo showing the subject and its environs.

Learn all the rules of composition, not just the rule of thirds. There are many guides, rules and aids to help you make an engaging composition. Once you have mastered them, then your photography will reach the next level.

Shoot low, shoot high, cover all focal lengths and angles. The biggest mistake by photographers is photographing from the same position all the time, go low or high and see how your angle and perspective changes, makes for rewarding images.

Be different, don't always be shooting tight portraits and the same old unimaginative images. It is not easy to be different and come up with a unique photograph. Most of your attempts will fail, but when you get it right, your photo will have the "wow" factor.

The more you know about your subject, their behaviour, their habits and actions, this will help you to get into the right position to capture a great photograph.

Patience is critical for successful wildlife photography, be calm, but always be ready.

If you are on a self- drive safari When you park your car, keep in mind a few things, the direction of light, the direction of animals approaching and leaving, space for you to turn your vehicle around if something unexpected happens.

Goes without saying, turn your engine off or photos will suffer from camera shake. Keep windows open, listen for sounds of the bush. Alarm calls especially.

Don't be that photographer that makes the zebra or giraffe run or have someone chase them for you.

Do not shout or make noises to get a reaction from your subject. Do not change the behaviour of the animals to get a photograph. Do not endanger yourself or the subject.

Some times as photographers we are guilty of hiding behind our camera too much, not wanting to miss any photo opportunity.

We forget to a look around and us and soak in the smells and atmosphere, Mow and again, put the camera down, sit back and relax and enjoy the incredible wilderness surrounding you. But have the camera switched on just in case.

Si estás pensando en ampliar tu equipo pero no quieres ir cargado con muchos objetivos a la vez para poder cubrir todas las distancias focales, te interesa conocer los objetivos todoterreno.

Son una opción ideal si no eres excesivamente exigente y te parece tedioso tener que ir cambiando de objetivo cada vez que se te ocurre un nuevo encuadre.

En este artículo vamos a conocer las ventajas y desventajas de las lentes todoterreno y un listado bastante completo de las más recomendadas del momento. 

¿Qué Es un Objetivo Todoterreno?

Un Objetivo Todoterreno es una lente zoom que posee un rango variable y muy amplio de distancias focales. Por tanto, te permite cambiar la distancia focal sin moverte del mismo lugar ajustando solo un anillo y poder modificar el rango de visión.

Conviene no confundir unos objetivos zoom con otros. Depende del rango focal que abarque una lente, existen varios tipos de objetivos zoom: los angulares o grandes angulares (de 24mm para abajo), los teleobjetivos (de 70 mm para arriba) y los objetivos todoterreno, que son los que tratan de abarcar todas las distancias focales posibles.

Aunque dicen que ‘no se puede tener todo’, lo cierto es que las ventajas de contar con un único objetivo cuando tenemos limitaciones de peso o espacio en nuestros desplazamientos son indudables.

No lo vamos a negar, la calidad de los objetivos de focal fija suele estar muy por encima de los de focal variable, ya que es bastante más complejo fabricar un objetivo que se comporte bien en tantas distancias focales que uno que no tenga que superar esa prueba. Y cuanto más amplio sea el rango focal, normalmente es peor.

La desventaja de trabajar con focales fijas, o simplemente con varios objetivos para cubrir un rango amplio de focales, tiene implicaciones, sobre todo a la hora de desplazarnos. Por ello, hay muchos se decantan por adquirir un único objetivo todoterreno que le cubra los principales usos que se le dan a los mismos.

Ventajas de un Objetivo Todoterreno

Velocidad: puedes cambiar la distancia focal rápidamente y sin miedo a perder el momento. Cambiando el objetivo pierdes tiempo.

Comodidad: te permite cambiar la distancia focal sin moverte del sitio. Ideal cuando tienes poco margen para acercarte o alejarte a lo que quieres fotografiar.

Portabilidad: solo necesitas transportar una lente en lugar de varias, por lo que ganarás espacio en la mochila y aligerarás el peso notablemente.

Versatilidad: puedes combinar diferentes tipos de fotografía en la misma sesión sin cambiar la lente: retrato, paisaje, deportes, animales, etc.

Desventajas de un Objetivo Todoterreno

Tamaño y Peso: suelen ser ópticas muy grandes y muy pesadas. Ten en cuenta que albergan muchos cristales para poder abarcar todas esas distancias focales.

Apertura Máxima: suelen tener una apertura máxima baja en comparación con las lentes fijas. Por lo que son poco luminosas en general y en condiciones de luz baja dan peores resultados.

Calidad: nunca tendrán la calidad que te ofrecen las focales fijas y cuando más distancias cubra, normalmente, menor calidad. A no ser que tengas un todoterreno muy pro, olvídate de cosas chulas como el buen bokeh.

Precio: en general son caras. Cuanto mayor es la apertura máxima más caras, pero también mejores.

Objetivos Todoterreno: ¿Mejor con Estabilizador de Imagen?

Casi todos los modelos cuentan con estabilizador. Para saber si un objetivo cuenta con él, debes fijarte en las especificaciones o ver si incluye unas siglas concretas:

Sigma: Optical Stabilization (OS)

Tamron: Vibration Compensation (VC)

Canon: Image Stabilizer (IS)

Nikon: Vibration Reduction (VR)

Sony: Optical Steady Shot (OSS)

Tokina: Vibration Correction Module (VCM-S)

Panasonic/Fujifilm: Optical Imagen Stabilizer (OIS)

Obviamente, la incorporación del estabilizador encarece el objetivo, aunque hay cámaras que ya incorporan el sistema de estabilización. Es el caso de marcas como Sony o Pentax, que cuentan con cámaras que incluyen estabilizador en el propio cuerpo, con lo que podemos prescindir de él en el objetivo llegado el caso.

¿Para qué nos viene bien el estabilizador de imagen? Pues para evitar la trepidación en condiciones de luz baja o cuando usamos focales largas. Piensa que a partir de ciertas focales más altas como 100mm o 200mm, el pulso se nota sobremanera a la hora de hacer fotos cámara en mano.

Si no queremos que nuestra foto salga trepidada, necesitaremos disparar a velocidades de obturación muy altas. Esto también exige, a su vez, realizar el disparo con mucha luz ambiente o trabajar con sensibilidades ISO más altas (con la consecuente aparición de ruido digital si nos pasamos).

Lo mismo ocurre si queremos hacer fotos nocturnas o con escasa iluminación. El estabilizador nos permite disparar fotografías utilizando velocidades de obturación más bajas. Al dejar que llegue más luz al sensor evitamos que la imagen salga trepidada. De hecho, normalmente se habla de una equivalencia en el uso del estabilizador de un par de diafragmas más de luz.

¿Cuándo Nos Conviene Comprar un Objetivo Todoterreno?

Los objetivos todoterreno te permiten abarcar prácticamente todos lo tipos de fotografía. Eso sí, tampoco te emociones antes de tiempo.

Por ejemplo, si quieres hacer un retrato usando una distancia focal de 50 mm, no esperes conseguir la misma calidad que un retrato hecho con una focal fija 50mm f/1.4.  No vas a conseguir la misma captura ni un bokeh tan bonito. Será probablemente una buena captura, pero sin lograr la estética y belleza de una lente específica para un tipo de fotografía concreto.

La polivalencia de un objetivo todoterreno nos viene bien para cuando buscamos precisamente eso, hacer ‘un poco de todo’. Es el objetivo ideal para fotógrafos viajeros porque solo con él, se pueden hacer todo tipo de fotos sin necesidad de cargar con más peso.

Un objetivo todoterreno te vendrá bien para fotografiar la naturaleza y los animales. No se te podrá resistir un paisaje cercano o lejano ni la belleza de una flor que parece inaccesible. También podrás captar desde una distancia prudencial a un animal peligroso en un safari o a un insecto asustadizo desde lejos.

Si te gusta fotografiar deportes o de eventos en general, también podrás hacer fotografías utilizando diversas distancias focales. Al no tener que cambiar el objetivo serás más rápido. Por último, también podrás practicar street photography haciendo incluso retratos en primer plano (usando focales largas) sin miedo a invadir el espacio vital de los sujetos fotografiados.

Los Objetivos Todoterreno Más Recomendados

Existen decenas de objetivos todoterreno de todas las marcas que cubren diversas distancias focales. No podemos nombrarlos todos, pero sí que podemos hacer un lista (por marcas de objetivos) de los más recomendados del momento, que también son los mejor valorados por los usuarios.

Antes de comprar un objetivo todoterreno, fíjate siempre en que sea compatible con tu cámara y con la montura específica con la que cuente. El precio marcará muchas veces la gama, pero no siempre. Fíjate sobre todo en todo el rango focal que cubre y en la apertura máxima. Si no sabes qué significan algunas siglas, echa un vistazo a este artículo.

Un dato importante en cuanto a la apertura de diafragma. Cuando veas que un objetivo aparece como, por ejemplo, ’18-200 mm f/3.5 – 5.6′, significará que la apertura máxima para 18 mm será de f/3.5 y que la apertura máxima para la distancia focal más amplia, 200 mm, será de f/5.6. Si solo aparece una apertura máxima, como f/4.0, es porque tiene una apertura máxima constante en todas las distancias focales.

Objetivos Todoterreno Sigma

#1. Sigma 18-200 mm f/3.5 – 6.3 II DC OS HSM

Este es el objetivo todoterreno superventas de la marca Sigma para cámaras APS-C. Abarca un amplio rango de distancias focales y además tiene un precio bastante razonable. Incorpora Estabilizador óptico (OS) y motor hipersónico (HSM) que ofrece un AF de alta velocidad y rendimiento silencioso.

#2. Sigma 18-35 mm f/1.8 DC HSM

Este objetivo está diseñado para cámaras con sensor APS-C. Cuenta con un rango focal más reducido que el anterior pero destaca por su luminosidad, ya que posee una apertura máxima constante de f/1.8. Con él conseguirás un efecto bokeh muy atractivo. Además también incorpora un motor HSM, con AF rápido y silencioso.

#3. Sigma 24-105 mm f/4 DG OS HSM

Una de las últimas lentes ‘Art’ de Sigma diseñada tanto para cámaras full frame como APS-C. Destaca por incorporar un estabilizador óptico muy efectivo y por tener una apertura máxima muy buena para abarcar un rango focal bastante amplio. Cuenta también con el motor hipersónico silencioso (HSM) con enfoque automático veloz y poco ruidoso.

Objetivos Todoterreno Tamron

#4. Tamron 18-400 mm f/3.5 – 5.6 Di-II VC HLD

Se trata de un objetivo todoterreno completísimo, porque alcanza un rango focal amplísimo. Está diseñado para cámaras APS-C y cuenta con un estabilizador de imagen (VC) que reduce el efecto de las vibraciones cámara en mano. Ideal para cuando usamos focales largas. Cuenta también con un motor regulador de torsión (HDL) más pequeño, silencioso, rápido y eficiente.

#5. Tamron SP AF 17-50 mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC

Objetivo diseñado para cámaras APS-C que, aunque cubre un rango focal más reducido, cuenta con una apertura máxima constante de f/2.8. Aunque pierde un poco de nitidez en los bordes, está constituido por cristales con un alto índice de refracción que permiten corregir, fundamentalmente, aberraciones cromáticas.

#6. Tamron SP AF 24-70 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

Si buscas una lente de alta gama que también sea apta para cámaras full frame esta es una buena opción. El rango focal que abarca no está nada mal para la luminosidad que puede ofrecer. Además, a parte de incluir el estabilizador de imagen (VC) también cuenta con el sistema de enfoque de alta velocidad de la marca (USD).

Objetivos Todoterreno Canon

#7. Canon 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

Objetivo diseñado para cámaras APS-C que cubre un amplio rango de distancias focales. Incorpora un motor (STM) ideal para grabación de vídeo porque el enfoque automático es suave y discreto. También incorpora un Estabilizador de imagen (IS) muy eficaz que mantiene nítidas las imágenes en todas las distancias focales. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 360€.

#8. Canon 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS USM

Si buscas un todoterreno para APS-C que cubra menos distancias focales pero que sea más luminoso, te interesa este. Tiene una apertura máxima constante de f/2.8  y además del estabilizador de imagen, cuenta con un motor ultrasónico (USM) que utiliza vibraciones de frecuencia ultrasónica para activar el autofoco de forma silenciosa y a gran velocidad. Lo puedes encontrar en Amazon por unos 800€.

#9. Canon 24-105 mm f/4 IS USM

Este objetivo está diseñado tanto para cámaras APS-C como para full frame. Es muy versátil, porque abarca un rango amplio de distancias focales sin arriesgar demasiado la apertura máxima constante de f/4. Además, como en el caso anterior, cuenta con un buen estabilizador de imagen y un motor ultrasónico. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 780€. Si necesitas mayor luminosidad y un mejor rendimiento también está la versión con apertura máxima f/2.8, pero el precio se dispara hasta los 2.000€.

Objetivos Todoterreno Nikon

#10. Nikon 18-105 mm f/3.5 – 5.6G ED VR

Es posible encontrar este objetivo como opción del kit de compra inicial, pero también se puede adquirir por separado para una cámara APS-C. Es una lente sencilla pero efectiva que además incorpora un sistema estabilizador que reduce las vibraciones cámara en mano. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 250€.

#11. Nikon 17-55 mm f/2.8G ED-IF

Si buscas un objetivo todoterreno para cámaras APS-C de gama alta que trabaje muy bien bajo condiciones de luz bajas, el 17-55 mm es muy buena alternativa. El rango focal es limitado pero la apertura máxima es de f/2.8. Además cuenta con un buen sistema de enfoque interno (IF) y un motor de onda silenciosa (SWM). En Amazon lo tienes por unos 1.400€.

#12. Nikon 24-120 mm f/4G ED VR

Lente diseñada tanto para cámaras APS-C como para full frame. Destaca por cubrir un amplio rango de distancias focales manteniendo una apertura máxima constante de f/4. Por supuesto, también incorpora el estabilizador de imagen (VR) que evita las trepidaciones del pulso del fotógrafo. Lo encontrarás por unos 1.140€ en Amazon. Si necesitas mayor luminosidad, también existe la versión Nikon 24-70 mm f/2.8, pero el precio ya supera los 2.000€ en Amazon.

#13. Sony SAL 18-250 mm f/3.5-6.3

Este objetivo está diseñado para cámaras APS-C y con montura tipo A. Se caracteriza por alcanzar un amplio rango de distancias focales y por contar con una lente asférica con cristal ED. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 562€. Si no te importa perder rango de focales, también tienes disponible la versión 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 por unos 460€.

#14. Sony SAL 16-80 mm f/3.5-4.5 Zeiss Vario Sonnar T*

Esta lente de Sony es compatible con cámaras APS-C de montura tipo A. Tiene un tamaño compacto y revestimiento T* de las superficies ópticas que garantiza la óptima transmisión de la luz. Cuenta con un lente Zeiss de buena calidad. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 710€.

#15. Sony SAL 24-75 mm f/2.8 Zeis Vario Sonnar T* ZA SSM II

Esta es una óptica de segunda generación válida para cámaras APS-C y full frame. Cuenta con un diseño aerodinámico y está totalmente sellada. Además también está fabricada con el revestimiento T* que mejora el sistema de transmisión de la luz y con un sistema de enfoque (SSM) muy rápido y silencioso. #16. Pentax 18-270 mm f/3.5-5.6 SDM SLR

Objetivo todoterreno de Pentax pensado para cámaras APS-C capaz de abarcar un amplio rango focal. Incluye un motor ultrasónico (SDM) que garantiza un enfoque muy suave y silencioso. La óptica cuenta, entre otras cosas, con dos lentes con antirreflejo ED y un tratamiento Super Protect (SP) que garantiza un sellado hermético. Es ideal para fotógrafos aventureros. #17. Pentax 16-50 mm f/2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM

Se trata de una lente pensada para cámaras APS-C, es ya un clásico de Pentax y lo sigue siendo por su versatilidad. Es cierto que no abarca un amplio rango focal, pero destaca por su gran luminosidad.  Cuenta también con lentes de superficie no esférica y con antirreflejo ED. Además, incluye un sistema de enfoque Quick-Shift que permite una conmutación instantánea de AF a MF. #18. Pentax 28-105 mm f/3.5-5.6 DFA ED DC WR HD

Este objetivo zoom está pensado para cámaras APS-C y full frame. Sus lentes de buena calidad, proporcionan una imagen nítida con las mínimas aberraciones cromáticas y esféricas. Además, el objetivo está recubierto por una multicapa HD que evita la aparición de reflejos o destellos, incluso a contraluz. Objetivo Todoterreno Tokina

#19. Tokina AT-X 24-70 mm f/2.8 Pro FX

Si estás buscando un objetivo todoterreno de calidad para tu cámara full frame y ajustar tu presupuesto, el Tokina es ideal para ti. Se trata de una lente de muy buena calidad que cubre un rango focal relativamente amplio con una apertura máxima de f/2.8.

Está fabricado con elementos esféricos de muy baja dispersión, cuenta con un mecanismo de enfoque automático silencioso y control de aberraciones cromáticas. Pero lo mejor es el precio, porque comparado con otras marcas que ofrecen las mismas prestaciones para FF, es más económico.

Eso sí, ten en cuenta que el diseño es tosco y pesado (casi 1 kilo), como acostumbran a ser todos los Tokina. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 880€ en Amazon.

Objetivos Todoterreno para Cámaras EVIL

#20. Sony SEL 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3

Objetivo compatible con cámaras APS-C con montura E de Sony. Incluye un sistema óptico Steady Shot con estabilización de imagen que garantiza imágenes nítidas y bien enfocadas, así como la grabación de vídeos sin trípode y en movimiento. Posee una apertura en forma poligonal que permite la obtención de desenfoques redondeados con un bokeh natural y atractivo. También destaca por un enfoque automático rápido y la reducción de la distancia de enfoque mínima. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 750€.

#21. Sony SEL 18-105 mm f/4 OSS

Se trata de un objetivo de Sony pensado también para cámaras APS-C con montura E. Dispone de estabilizador óptico y un zoom motorizado ideal para la grabación de vídeo. Como ves en la foto, cuenta con un botón zoom situado en el lateral (W/wide – T/Tele) y también con el anillo de zoom habitual. #22. Olympus 14-150 mm f/4-5.6

Diseñado para cámaras con sensor Micro Cuatro Tercios, se trata de un todorreno de buena calidad capaz de cubrir un rango focal muy amplio. Es una óptica compacta, ligera y perfectamente sellada (resistente al polvo, las salpicaduras y la congelación). Cuenta también un revestimiento especial ZERO que evita aberraciones cromáticas u ópticas y un enfoque automático rápido y muy preciso. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 550€.

#23. Olympus 40-150 mm f/4-5.6

Esta es una potente y sofisticada lente muy ligera y pequeña pensada, sobre todo, para retratos o para fotografiar escenas lejanas. Incorpora el sistema MSC (Movie & Still compatible) que cuenta con un sistema de enfoque automático silencioso y preciso. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 168€ en color negro y por unos 290€ en color plata. Aunque si buscas el mismo rango focal con más luminosidad, también encontrarás la versión Olympus 40-150 mm f/2.8, aunque también será más caro. En Amazon está por unos 1.400€.

#24. Panasonic 14-140 mm f/3.5-5-6

Se trata de una lente muy versátil que integra una tecnología de estabilización óptica de imágenes (O.I.S.) que compensa de forma eficaz las vibraciones y movimientos que se producen al realizar fotografías y vídeos cámara en mano. También cuenta compatibilidad con vídeo HD y con un sistema de seguimiento eficaz para una grabación óptima. Lo encontrarás en Amazon por unos 500€.

#25. Panasonic 35-100 mm f/2.8

Este objetivo zoom pensado para la captura de retratos y escenas lejanas, es ideal tanto para fotografía como para vídeo. Por lo que más destaca es por su luminosidad, ya que su apertura máxima es de f/2.8. También tiene integrada la tecnología O.I.S. de estabilización y la compatibilidad HD que te comentábamos antes. Incluye, además, un revestimiento de nano superficie para evitar reflejos y degradados no deseados y es resistente al polvo y a las salpicaduras de agua. #26. Fujifilm Fujinon 18-135 mm  f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR

Este todoterreno de Fujifilm abarca un amplio rango de distancias focales y cuenta con un sistema de estabilización de cinco pasos muy avanzado. Gracias a su sellado hermético es resistente al polvo y a las salpicaduras. Además, proporciona unos resultados excelentes en cuanto a nitidez y contraste. En Amazon lo encontrarás por unos 690€.

#27. Fujifilm Fujinon 16-55 mm f/2.8

Si buscas un todoterreno luminoso para tu Fuji y no te importa perder rango focal en cuanto a tele, te interesa este objetivo. Posee una apertura máxima de f/2.8 en todas las distancias focales y un sistema AF silencioso y rápido. Su construcción es resistente y compacta y también está sellado para resistir las inclemencias del clima (soporta hasta -10ºC). En Amazon lo encontrarás por unos 1.060€.

Virginia's Tree, Story Behind the Fine Art Print

The low rumble of thunder in the distance sounded the arrival of the first storms of summer. Bolts of lightning danced across the skies. The clouds were a Velvia purple and spread out across the western sky. The mood in the Masai reserve was electrifying, the air tingled with anticipation of the first rains, from time to time, the low sun in the east would filter through the rain clouds. Our safari vehicle bounced along the dusty roads. We were five, me, our driver Benson, who suffered from selective hearing, I believe this was a learnt skill as he had three wives.

A husband and wife from Belgium, today I was their wildlife photography tutor. It was our second trip together. I enjoyed their company and passion for wildlife photography. Our fifth guest is known to all us from the "Big Screen." I was more than slightly star-struck. The previous day she had given a presentation on her lifework, the Born Free Foundation or as Virginia like to call it, the Born Free Family. Yes, the beautiful, gifted and passionate lady sitting next to me was none other, Virginia McKenna, the actress who starred with her husband in the lovely movie "Born Free". In the autumn of her life, eyes sparkling, a captivating aura and full of energy. Virginia is still the voice, of the voiceless, the ever-diminishing wildlife on our troubled planet. After decades of standing firmly and resolute against institutions, governments, individuals her resolve has not waivered, her determination and passion shine brightly for all to see.

Off we went in a hail of mud, and grass as Benson manoeuvred the 4x4 expertly from one muddy swamp to the next, then we started to climb towards a woodland, as we entered the wood, it was eerily quiet, dappled light and the smell of crushed mint filled our senses. As we exited the forest, the scent of mint was replaced by the putrid smell of a hippo carcass. Vultures were in attendance in large numbers, Egyptian, Hooded, Lappet-faced, White-backed and even the Ruperts. The lions were as I suspected, asleep, lying flat in the shade of some trees. Still, my guests were happy just to come across these elusive predators.

I turned to the occupants with me, and with all the persuasiveness I could muster, I said, "Let us leave the lions, for now, photographically there is nothing of note here". The ladies present were happy as I could see the lingering smell of death was affecting them. A few days previously, I had noticed a magnificent specimen of a tree, a shepherds tree, on a hill close by, I decided this would make a perfect subject with the impending storm as a dramatic backdrop. Once we arrived at the location, I directed Benson to the best position to photograph the tree, then explained to my guests my intentions of photographing this magnificent tree against the beautiful storm clouds.

Usually, tripods would be the order of the day, but we were in a "Big Five" game reserve, getting out of our vehicle was a non-starter. With the strong winds, we were better protected photographing from the 4x4, using bean bags or even hand-holding. I am Fujifilm X-photographer, oddly I found myself holding a Hasselblad X1D2 and composing the amazing tree against the dramatic storm clouds in the Hasselblads viewfinder. How did this come about? A lovely gentleman, now a good friend called Pablo, and I chatted over coffee that morning about cameras. Pablo is an excellent photographer and a collector of medium format cameras. When Pablo opened his aluminium case, my heart skipped a beat at the contents. He knew I was using Fujifilm GFX 100, although mine is a pre-production camera belonging to Fujifilm South Africa, Pablo had the GFX100, 50R and a shiny wonderfully engineered Hasselblad X1D2. He saw the sparkle in my eyes and kindly offered the camera to me for the day, out of politeness, I declined, but at lunchtime, he offered again. This time my curiosity got the better of me, I accepted.

While photographing, I was explaining to my guests my thought process and settings. It was then I turned to Virginia and said, "I can't help but a draw a comparison of the tree standing firm against the impending storm and the battles you fight on behalf of our wildlife against those who seek to destroy for profit or pleasure." Virginia's eyes smiled and sparkled; the heavens opened, and the deluge turned our field into a swamp.

Benson jumped outside and began to batten down the canvas hatches, we all helped, and within a few minutes, the 4x4 was crawling its way back to a road. We eventually found a thatch structure that we could park underneath. As we sipped our gin and tonics, we recounted the afternoons' beautiful experiences and which was our highlight. For me, sitting next to Virginia Mckenna and photographing "Virginia's tree." against the most amazing African storm I had ever seen, will be forever engrained in my memory. I turned on my camera and took a quick peek. I smiled, looked up, held my glass out. Slainte, and Virginia replied "Slainte, as our glasses clinked, thunder rang out, and lightning danced all around.
