An oak timberworm (Arrhenodes minutus) from last June. I love these little guys!

Arrhenodes minutus / Oak Timberworm from the other night.

Oak Timberworm, Arrhenodes minutus, and an interesting mite on its mid femur, found at my moth light...likely attracted to the area due to the fresh red oak I am adding to the wood pile.  Note the odd mite appears to be glued to the femur, it was still alive when the picture was taken, but apparently could not leave its host.

Oak Timberworm (Arrhenodes minutus)

...a species of Straight-snouted weevil (Brentidae) that is native to Eastern and Central North America.  Adult oak timberworms are typically active from May through June and inhabit deciduous forests. Oak timberworm larvae bore into oak trees and feed on their wood. Oak timberworms are sexually dimorphic with males sporting a broad beak and females sporting a long, narrow beak.
