It was against Chennaiyin FC that goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharja had erred leading to a 1-3 loss for ATK. A clanger in Bengaluru followed which had ATK chasing the semi-final. Kotal, Rane score as ATK beat FC Goa and go top - football
Tumblr media
ATK quelled FC Goa and knocked them off the top perch in ISL6 with a 2-0 win here on Saturday despite struggling to breathe for a passage of play in the second half.Goals from Pritam Kotal and Jayesh Rane took ATK to 24 points, the same as FC Goa, after 13 rounds and on pole position on better goal difference. ATK have a goal difference of 13 and FC Goa stay on nine.“Had Goa won, they would have been six points ahead and maybe sealed the first position. But this is football. A very good win for us brings us back on top,” said ATK assistant-coach Manuel Cascallena deputising for suspended head coach Antonio Habas. The 2-0 win means ATK have a better goal differential against FC Goa, having lost 1-2 away. After a cautious first half that had FC Goa hitting the side netting twice and Hugo Boumous being unable to keep his shot on target and ATK having little to show for barring a Jobby Justin header that lacked power, the game opened up.ATK came out in the second half attacking FC Goa’s sidebacks and using the width of the Salt Lake stadium pitch. They scored in the 48th minute when Roy Krishna dragged two players wide and Kotal ran in to meet his chip with a powerful header.“It was a mistake defending a set-piece. That the goal came early in the second half proved decisive. When two equal teams play, small things make a difference,” said FC Goa coach Sergio Lobera. Krishna found space again in the 50th minute but was shielded by Carlos Pena. ATK were pressing high and FC Goa were being dragged out of shape. In the 54th minute Mourtada Fall left a leg on Krishna that deserved a booking from referee Kasimov Sherzod. Soon, Agustin Garcia blasted over from another hook-back. FC Goa’s plan of attack was, well, attack. It came in unrelenting waves forcing ATK into desperate defending, fouls in dangerous areas and putting bodies on the line to protect Kotal’s goal. Prabir Das blocked a shot in the 77th minute inside the penalty area from Ahmed Jahou and in the 60th, it was Krishna who did outside the area hurting his hand in the process.FC Goa were also profligate in front of goal with substitute Saviour Gama scuffing an on-the-run attempt. Twice, Arindam Bhattacharja kept ATK in the game. In the 65th minute, he left charge to jut out a hand that got to the ball before an onrushing Ferran Corominas. Three minutes later, Bhattacharja produced a reflex save to deny Seiminlen Doungel after Boumous broke free on the left and found his mate with a cut-back.Between the 58th and the 78th minutes, ATK struggled to get the ball out of their half as FC Goa attacked with all outfield players barring centre-backs Mourtada Fall and Carlos Pena.FC Goa coach Sergio Lobera took out left-back Mandar Rao Dessai and introduced attacking midfielder Eduardo Bedia. At the other end, left wingback Michael Sossiaraj was replaced by India central defender Anas Edathodika. It was Pena being replaced by Chinglensana Singh --- to ensure six Indians were on the pitch after Bedia came on --- that ATK turned things around.Rane could have put it to bed in the 80th minute after Krishna took Singh away, drew goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz out and played it to him. From almost on the goalline, Rane ballooned over.Eight minutes later, he didn’t. Again it was Krishna who took Singh with him after holding on to a Kotal free-kick. This time Rane sent the hook-back home with a stab.“There were two possibilities, either we would get a goal or they would from a counter-attack. It was a risk, I had to take,” said Lobera. Indian Super League | Brown delivers for The Blues

Indian Super League | Brown delivers for The Blues
There was finally some cheer in the Bengaluru FC camp as it battled past ATK 1-0 in the first leg of the ISL semifinal at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday.
Deshorn Brown’s first-half strike secured the reigning champion a morale-boosting win that puts it in the ascendancy going into the second leg in Kolkata next Sunday.
Nishu sees red
The home side played the last five odd minutes with 10 men after Nishu Kumar was sent off for denying Roy Krishna a scoring opportunity near the edge of the area. ATK pinned its hopes on the resulting free kick for the crucial away goal. But despite a retake, ATK couldn’t score as BFC’s excellent defensive co-ordination came to the fore.
Earlier in the evening, the first chance of the match fell to BFC in the seventh minute when Rahul Bheke rose to meet Dimas Delgado’s corner but headed it over the bar. But for that, BFC pegged itself deep with ATK doing all the pressing.
Just after the quarter-hour mark, ATK thought it had gone ahead when David Williams, after collecting the ball from Krishna on the right flank, drove it into the net, only to be called for a handball.
The hosts’ first phase of sustained pressure came around 30 minutes and it brought three consecutive corners. While not much came off them, BFC stuck immediately after, when Brown bundled the ball in from close range after ATK goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharja made a mess of a weak shot from central defender Juanan.
At the break, in an attacking move, Cuadrat brought on striker Kevaughn Frater for defender Albert Serran and the Jamaican proved the liveliest of the lot.
Brilliant save
On 75 minutes, he unleashed a superb left-footer from 30 yards out which was brilliantly saved by Arindam. He then released Paartalu on the right wing but the latter’s cut-back wasn’t capitalised on by Chhetri.
Much of ATK’s attack was restricted to the left side of the midfield, but Michael Soosairaj had a largely forgettable outing there.
ATK’s hopes rose when Williams went on a marauding box-to-box run that brought the free-kick from a dangerous position. But BFC ensured it wouldn’t be denied the victory.
The result: Bengaluru FC 1 (Brown 31) bt ATK 0.

New outfit Bengaluru FC will make their much-awaited Indian Super League (ISL) debut when they cross swords with last season’s semi-finalists Mumbai City FC on Sunday. The Sree Kanteerava Stadium will witness a first when the home team, a two-time I-League champions, takes to the field in the country’s new top-tier league. The clash between the two rivals would be interesting, for they hardly know each others’ game. “It is the beginning of a new era in this club’s history, but the boys know they can’t get carried away by the occasion. Mumbai City are a good side and we will have to be at our best if we are to take anything away from the clash,” BFC head coach Albert Roca said at the pre-match press conference. In all likelihood, BFC will go in with field five foreign players as per the league rules.
It will be interesting to see the team fielded by Roca, given the inclusion of Braulio Nobrega, Edu Garcia and Miku, who join defender John Johnson in the Blues’ squad for the ISL.
Bengaluru have been given the green light to play goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, with league rules allowing the Federation Cup winners to replace Lalthuammawia Ralte, who is set to miss at least four weeks with an ankle injury.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push( google_ad_client: "ca-pub-1462625222154506", enable_page_level_ads: true );
Also missing out for upto three weeks will be Dimas Delgado, owing to an injury suffered in pre-season.
“It’s unfortunate that Dimas and Mawia picked up injuries but at the same time, I am happy that Gurpreet can fill the void in the goalkeeping position. He makes us secure and will play a crucial part tomorrow,” Roca said.
Guided by Brazil-born Costa Rican gaffer Alexandre Guimaraes, Mumbai come into the game on the back of a pre-season in Spain, where they played seven friendly games.
With former Blues custodians Amrinder Singh and Arindam Bhattacharja in their ranks, the Islanders have also brought in some flair with as many as five Brazilians headlining their overseas contingent, which will be led by Romanian defender Lucian Goian.
Asked about Mubai FC, Rocca said, “Mumbai have a coach who did well with them last season and they have got good foreigners who can cause trouble on their day. But we will focus on our game and look forward to putting out a performance that will make our fans proud.”
Meanwhile, Bengaluru FC, who were involved with the AFC Cup commitments, travelled to the BFC Residential Academy in Ballari for a two-week camp.
The build-up also saw the Blues play multiple friendly games against East Bengal in Bengaluru and Chennai City, Gokulam FC and Minerva Punjab in Ballari before returning to the city.

David Williams’ strike sends ATK to top after beating defending champs Bengaluru FC - football
Tumblr media
ATK beat defending champions Bengaluru FC (BFC) for the first time in five attempts in the Indian Super League (ISL) spread over three seasons on Wednesday. Australian David Williams scored the match’s only goal in the 47th minute. With 18 points from 10 rounds, ATK moved top but FC Goa, who have 18 points from nine games, can dislodge them in Chennai on Thursday. BFC stay on 16 from 10. By the time BFC switched positions for Rahul Bheke and Juanan in the three-man central defence, Williams had done the damage. Bheke had a string of poor touches and mispasses in the first 30 minutes and nearly lost a ball to Jayesh Rane in the 41st.The India defender had recovered then but when Rane pressured him in the 47th minute, Bheke couldn’t retrieve. Rane found Williams and the Australian banged in his fifth goal of the season with a shot so powerful that before Gurpreet Singh Sandhu could fling his 1.98m frame to the left, the ball had passed the India goalkeeper. “It was a good finish,” said BFC striker Sunil Chhetri.“It was the kind of game where the team which scores first would win. We lost to the skill of one player. The strikers of ATK (Williams and Roy Krishna) are doing very well. They had played three days ago so we knew they would attack us in the first 10 minutes of the second half. We spoke at half-time about it,” said BFC coach Carles Cuadrat. Rane was an important inclusion in central midfield in the way Raphael Augusto could not be for BFC, leading to the Brazilian being replaced in the 76th minute. “He has just recovered from a sciatic problem,” said Cuadrat. That Arindam Bhattacharja in ATK goal wasn’t really called into action till the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time was proof of the kind of shift ATK’s outfield players put in to subdue a team that has the skill of Chhetri, the pace of Udanta Singh and big men in Eric Paartalu, Albert Serran, Juanan to exploit set-piece situations.“The team was the Santa Claus tonight. I am very happy with the attitude they showed. We are a new team, we need time to be consistent but to beat a team as difficult as Bengaluru is good,” said Antonio Lopez Habas who said this was the first time he played a game on December 25.With one win in their last five games, ATK had hit a block after winning three of their first five. Getting Krishna alone in front of goal inside the second minute, therefore, would have been just what they wanted.Williams had found his former Wellington Phoenix teammate with a lob behind the defence and though replays showed Krishna may have been off-side, the flag had stayed down. The man with eight goals in nine games skewed his drive wide. With Armando Pena --- injured Carl McHugh’s replacement is 15 days from full fitness, said Habas ---- and Rane in central midfield, ATK attacked BFC’s central defensive trio early in the game and after Krishna, Francisco Gonzalez got into a good position inside the first quarter. On the break, Michael Soosiaraj too had broken through twice.BFC won a few free-kicks but with Sumit Rathi, 18, putting up a standout show among the three ATK centre-backs, neither was threatening. Rathi --- he is one for the future, said Habas --- also got an important interception in the 38th minute to keep an Udanta Singh delivery from reaching Chhetri.Since BFC joined the ISL in 2017-18, ATK’s form had gone south. In 2017-18, they decoupled from Atletico Madrid and finished ninth. Last term, they led by Komal Thatal’s goal here before being unhinged by two strikes on either side of half-time. It also led to Kalu Uche being injured and with it evaporated ATK’s hopes of a revival. The away game in 2018-19 ended 1-0. Paartalu had scored once each last term for BFC but on Christmas Day, the big Australian was reined in by ATK. It turned out to be a big night for another Australian. Read the full article
