The title of the film refers to a video game character, "The Chumscrubber", who helps his friends to survive in a superficial world by keeping things authentic, and is portrayed as a post-apocalyptic hero, carrying his in his hand as he fights the forces of evil. The Chumscrubber's world was intended to be a reflection of the Hillside community, shown by the repetition of characters' lines in the video game; [7] Posin commented that "the Chumscrubber is everything that that community has suppressed or denied or tried to ignore, and [...] the idea that the collective denial of the community as a whole finally gives birth to a character that will not be ignored".[8]
[6] He said that hypocrisy was "at the top of the list" of the themes he wanted to explore in the story.
The film features dolphins as a recurring motif. Michael forms an with dolphins and paints them all over his house, the street plan of Hillside is shown to form the shape of a dolphin at the end of the film.[...] Posin saw Hillside's formation of a dolphin shape as "beauty and order to the chaos", illustrating Michael's belief in deep beauty where everybody else finds chaos.[9]

The In Between (2022)

Dull, saccharine romance full of assholes and cliches. I know I’m not the target audience. There are better teen films.

The In Between
[3 stars]
Have I mentioned lately that I’m a sucker for romance? Not the sickly sweet stuff (well, not typically) but the more grounded and honest variety. Though I suppose I also have to admit that I don’t shy from a sense of fantasy. The In Between is definitely a fantasy romance in every definition…we know that from the very beginning. It makes no secret of having a supernatural element. I give it props for that.
Joey King (Going in Style), as the main focus, delivers a complex teen struggling with concepts of love and family. Kyle Allen (West Side Story), as her beau, is your typical boy toy (for these movies) with enough smarts and muscles to please just about anyone watching, regardless of which aspects they’d like to emphasize. He’s actually good in the role, but the character is a pretty stock over-achieving nice guy. And that’s what the tale needed for King.
There are also two solid supporting roles. Celeste O’Connor (Freaky) as the best friend gets plenty of great lines. Realistic? Not so much, but that’s in the writing and she is both entertaining and necessary. And as King’s adopted mother, Kim Dickens adds some interesting layers to her life and the overall story.
Where the film goes a bit wrong is that Marc Klein’s (Mirror Mirror) script tries to explain everything. Normally I’d applaud a script for creating reasons and frameworks, but in this case it simply wasn’t needed. He’s a ghost, we get it. They have unresolved issues, we understand that from the outset. We don’t need to be told how this stuff works because it doesn’t work any differently in this movie than it does in any story of its ilk out there. So why waste the time? At 2 hours, it really is a bit bloated for what it wants to cover.
However, Arie Posin’s directing manages to keep it all swimming above those choppy waters. He takes King through her teenaged angst and guides her through the pain and personal demons to something resembling early adulthood. And while that may sound derisive, I don’t mean it that way. King’s character is self-admittedly broken. This story is there partially to allow her a chance to mend some of the harm. And it succeeds without trying to tie it all up into a nice and simple bow. OK, maybe a semi-simple bow, but it’s still tarnished enough to feel more real than soapy. And it has some subtle humor to keep it buoyant.
For a night on the couch with someone who’s made your life better next to you, it is a heartwarming, and even occasionally amusing, movie to spend some time with. But know the genre your heading into and accept those limitations to its reach.

Younger brother of former child star Macaulay Culkin, Rory Culkin has been exposed to acting from a very young age, portraying the younger versions of his brothers’ characters. He appeared in a photo as a brother to his real-life brother Macaulay in Joseph Ruben’s thriller film The Good Son (1993; also starring Elijah Wood) and once more played younger Macaulay in Donald Petrie’s live-stage film based on the Harvey Comics comic book character, Ri¢hie Ri¢h (1994).
In 2000, Rory landed his initial massive role as Rudy Prescott, the eight-year-old son of a somewhat overprotective single mother (played by Laura Linney) in writer-director Kenneth Lonergan’s applauded directorial debut, You Can Count on Me. The next year, TV viewers saw him starring as Jackson Mayhew, a 10-year-old who befriends an elderly man (played by Hume Cronyn) and begins to think that the old man is actually Santa Claus, in the TV movie Off Season (2001). He also guest starred in two episodes of Denis Leary’s single-camera comedy “The Job” (ABC).
Afterward, Rory returned to the big screen to play the younger version of real-life brother Kieran Culkin’s character in writer-director Burr Steers’ romantic drama comedy Igby Goes Down (2002). That same year, writer-director M. Night Shyamalan cast him alongside Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix in his booming critical success sci-fi/thriller/drama film, Signs, in which he played Morgan Hess, son of a former Episcopal priest (played by Gibson) who misplaced his faith after the death of his wife. He was also spotted as a guest in an October 2002 episode of the anthology series “The Twilight Zone” and in a September 2003 episode of NBC police procedural drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
Rory subsequently played Eli, the youngest son but the most levelheaded of all family members in Fred Schepisi’s comedy-drama movie starring numerous generations of the Kirk Douglas family, It Runs in the Family (2003). He then starred in a number of independent films, as Sam Merric, a shy, bullied teen who teams with his brother (played by Trevor Morgan) and friends planning the perfect payback for the bully, in writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes’ teen drama Mean Creek (2004) and as Charlie, the younger brother of Jamie Bell’s character who turns into the original target of kidnapping in Arie Posin’s dark comedy, The Chumscrubber (2005). He also co-starred with Edward Norton, Evan Rachel Wood and David Morse in writer-director David Jacobson’s romantic drama set in the current-working day San Fernando Valley, Down in the Valley, which made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2005.
That same year, Rory filmed Alexander Bulkley’s thriller based on Robert Graysmith’s books, Zodiac, in which he portrayed Johnny Parish, the 12-year-old son of a police detective (played by Justin Chambers) assigned to investigate serial killer. The film is scheduled for release in the United States on March 2, 2007. Afterward, he teamed up with Robin Williams in Patrick Stettner’s psychological thriller inspired by Armistead Maupin’s novel, The Night Listener (2006), playing Pete D. Logand, the mysterious young listener of Williams’ radio show.
Rory just wrapped working on Gregory J. Lanesey’s true story-based baseball drama Chasing 3000, alongside Trevor Morgan and Ray Liotta. He is currently filming writers-directors Derick Martini and Steven Martini’s family drama comedy set on Long Island during rapidly changing occasions in 1981, Lymelife, along with Alec Baldwin, Timothy Hutton, Cynthia Nixon and brother Kieran Culkin.

'The Face of Love' Review
‘The Face of Love’ Review
When somebody you love dies one of the hardest things to have to deal with is the fact they are no longer in your life, and they won’t be ever again. We all deal with it differently, and our minds cope with it in many different ways, but what happens if you find a person who looks exactly like the one you lost? The Face of Love is a film that looks examines that question.
