Professor Layton Au - Pandora's Call

((I have made an intro post for this au before but it's been a while and things have changed so here we go))

The Pandora's Call Au follows the idea of pairing the games (+ the movie and crossover) and merging them together, combining the stories and mysteries while changing some other story details to fill the gaps left behind.

The namesake of this Au (and the first combination to be created), Pandora's Call is the combination of Pandora's Box and Spectre's Call.

It follows the Professor and his new assistant Emmy as they investigate the Elysian box. They follow its trail to the ghost town Folsense where they must uncover the secrets behind the spectres — two large and formless entities that fight in the streets — the Spirit — a figure commanding the animals of the town into harassing visitors — and the Golden Kingdom — a castle rumoured to be buried beneath Folsense originating from the Azran.

The Black Ravens are instead the Raven's Guild located in Dropstone and while they do participate in the market, they're more so 'adventurers' that oversee most of the travel to the ghost town.

Arianna isn't sick, Tony doesn't dress up as Seamus and Evan Barde doesn't die, they live in Dropstone together peacefully.

Instead of the manatee like creature she is in canon, Loosha is instead a Quetzalcoatlus that flew out of the Golden Kingdom when she was small enough for Luke to hold.

And Luke Triton is instead Lord Luke Herzen, the grandson of Duke Anton Herzen, raised by his grandfather in Folsense with his only contact with the world outside Folsense being when he uses the animals of Folsense to scare away outsiders.

The other game pairings in this Au are as follows:

Eternal Diva + Curious Village — Eternal Village

St Mystere exists on the island of Ambrosia, the looming tower is mixed with Descole's castle and the Whistler and Reinhold families are combined. Flora and Melina are sisters and Melina's consciousness is put into a robot after she dies.

Miracle Mask + PLvsAA — Mysterious Mask

Labyrinthia is its own world accessible through the Akbadain ruins which is where Randall ended up when he fell, the magic is real (but bound to that one area) and the one behind the Masked Gentleman is the Storyteller (Descole isn't in this one due to Dahlia related injuries).

Lost Future + Azran Legacy — Lost Legacy

Mostly follows the plot of Azran Legacy, but Bill Hawks has disappeared in a time machine related incident and someone claiming to be Luke from the future joins them on their journey. Targent makes it to each location first so they have to use a rudimentary time machine that can only go back a few days to let them collect the eggs first. Also Clive is Luke's half brother, though he has to wear a purple wig to cover his blonde hair.

I do have some extra details for what happens outside the main 'games' as well, though this post is getting long so I'll put them under the cut for anyone who's interested (sorry it's also pretty long):

Clark and Brenda have been dead for around 10 years by the time Pandora's Call starts (though Brenda isn't quite gone), though Clark's death was confirmed while Brenda went missing on her own accord and was presumed dead

Losing Clark and then Brenda in short succession then only a few years later losing Claire left Hershel in a very bad place, he withdrew more so than before and became more reckless in the cases he'd pursue

After being beaten up by the government, Lucille and Roland were worried about him only having them and his mentor Dr Schrader to support him so Lucille called the Ledore household and asked if they would be willing to check in on Hershel, which they agreed and Henry went to go check on him

It was rocky at first, but Henry reaching out really helped Hershel and the two became friends again, Angela joining them too, though with Monte d'Or they couldn't be there all the time

During Hershel's 'reckless era' Henry would often be the one to come over and make sure he's eating enough and looking after his injuries (both from the government incident and injuries he gets while being reckless)

He has two major injuries around this time, one from before the Government beat down and one that ended his 'reckless era' and made him realise he couldn't keep doing this

The first happened the day Claire died. A young boy ran into the burning building next door to the lab to look for his parents and Hershel ran after him, burning his hands in the process of saving the kid

The second was when he was in a particularly bad place mentally, when he decided to look into the case of Claire's death a second time. He got further with his investigation, but then he was jumped and beat up worse than the first time, severely damaging one of his legs in the process and needing it to be amputated from the knee down (When it heals enough he gets a prosthetic, but he also carries a foldable cane and crutches in case he needs them)

On a brighter note, his reckless era did bring about one good change and that was running into his old 'friend' Paul who had also gotten involved in some shady dealings. After escaping the people Hershel was investigating/Paul was getting even with, they ended up reconnecting (things were a bit more complicated than that but this post is already too long-)

This Au's Hershel is a lot tidier than his canon counterpart, he also tends to collect odd souvenirs from his travels (traits he's picked up from Clark and Brenda, *gestures to 'guy who's nothing but the people he's lost' post*)

He's also a bit quicker to go against law enforcement when they're interfering with his investigations (nothing extreme of course, but he's definitely hidden evidence he hasn't had a chance to observe properly before an inspector could take it away)

And that's all I'll share for now. I have a lot planned for this Au and eventually I want to write a few fics for it too (a multichapter fic for each 'game' and a few oneshots too, though it is a very ambitious project) so we'll see what happens.

So here's something with Beckett and Arianna hanging around the Rodriguez house, having a spontaneous muse about their adopted sire/childe relationship. :) Hope you like!

Arianna blinked, looking up from her book. “That – came out of nowhere,” she commented, raising an eyebrow at Beckett as he hovered near her chair.

“I suppose it did,” Beckett allowed with a chuckle. “My apologies – unfortunately for you, it appears I am feeling sentimental this evening.” He glanced left and right. “Perhaps because Melody isn’t around to spray paint me out of my mood.”

Arianna snorted. “They don’t tolerate mushiness well, no,” she agreed, setting her book down and turning to face him properly. “But neither do you, most of the time. What brought this bout on?”

“I’m honestly not sure,” Beckett admitted, leaning on the back of the chair. “Perhaps the phase of the moon is tugging at my humors, imbalancing them in favor of the phlegmatic. Perhaps the blood I feasted on earlier tonight had a maudlin taste to it.” He smiled. “Or perhaps I just looked at you and thought, ‘why would she ever want me as a father figure?’ Which then led to ‘well, since when have I ever wanted to be a father figure?’ Which led to my comment in your general direction, and that to here.”

“I see.” Arianna smiled back at him. “Well, if you want an answer to that first question, it’s pretty simple, honestly – you were one of only a handful of Kindred who was consistently nice to me. I mean, you were also deeply sarcastic, yes, but...you also seemed to enjoy talking to me. Asking me questions and actually listening to my responses. I felt like almost nobody listened to me when I first got dragged into this life. And I really appreciated that you actually came with me to sort out what happened to your friend Scott, instead of just leaving it all on my head.” She grimaced. “I would not have enjoyed taking on that Lasombra hiding out beneath the library alone.”

“Frankly, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it either,” Beckett said, grimacing. “Lasombras are not to be trifled with – my occasional traveling companion Lucita is an absolute terror when she’s enraged. I wish she’d been with us when we were fighting that would-be cult leader. She would have made short work of him. And probably lectured us for getting in over our heads in the bargain.” He shook his head. “And while my friends would happily bend your ear for hours telling you all the ways I’ve nearly gotten myself killed, I didn’t want you to get killed by whatever we found. While I’ve always been impressed by your ingenuity and ability to get things done, I was well aware you were still only a fledgling. And one without a sire to help smooth the transition, thanks to Sebastian and his beheading-happy ways.”

Arianna chuckled faintly. “I know...though given how I was Embraced, I doubt he would have been much of a sire,” she added with a scowl. “I just consider myself really lucky that Bertram Tung was willing to share what he knew about the clans and the sects. And that Annabella was waiting for me when I was finally allowed back Downtown. And that I stumbled across Alice and Victor pretty early in my unlife. I’m not sure I would have gotten as far as I did without Alice watching my back at a few key moments. And don’t even ask how I could have gotten the sarcophagus back from the Giovanni without the Hawkes and that one friendly mage giving me a hand there.”

“Oh, I’m sure it’s not as bad as all that – you would have figured out something,” Beckett said, smirking. “After all – your neck was literally on the line at that moment.”

“Don’t remind me,” Arianna muttered, rubbing her neck. “And I don’t think any plan I had to execute on my own would have gone nearly as well. The point is, I did a lot better with help than on my own, and you being willing to help me out – multiple times – really endeared you to me.” She smirked back at him. “Granted, I don’t know if your sense of humor helped or hurt.”

“I’ll have you know that I’m the funniest Kindred within miles,” Beckett replied with a grin. “But if I must be serious, I was happy to help you – and not just because I too was eager to get a look at that sarcophagus and figure out what was inside. I simply – liked you. I knew how it felt to be thrown so suddenly into this world without the slightest idea what had happened – thank you so much, Gangrel Embrace traditions,” he muttered. “And I knew how it felt to have someone find you and take you under their wing. Not to mention, the way you looked so horrified about facing Sebastian all on your own after the museum...I couldn’t help but feel at least vaguely protective of you. Enough to help vouch for you. And then our paths kept crossing, and as I got to know you more, I got to like you more. Until...” He waved a hand to encompass the room. “Here we are.”

“Here we are,” Arianna agreed, tone warm. “And I like where we’ve ended up.”

Beckett smiled and nodded. “I do as well.”

I wrote down a few things of Arianna talents from some of the episodes but I’m wondering if I’m missing something,I put down: reading, cooking, hairstyling, playing the harp, Dancing, horseback riding, fencing, hawk training, gardening, astronomy, painting, hand-to-hand combat, laws of corona, sailing, languages, knowledge of the world. Is there anything I missed?

I'm a bit curious where you're getting some of your ideas as being some of her talents. Where are you getting cooking, hairstyling, dancing, astronomy, and sailing?

If the cooking is for the cupcake in the portrait, I'd call that baking, and... I wouldn't call it a talent. That cupcake looks terrible. XD Interests aren't the same as talents.

If the hairstyling is what she did to the horse in the portrait, I'd call that horse grooming (and again, wouldn't necessarily call it a talent, but then maybe the style she put on that mane was popular in Corona at the time).

You could combine fencing and hand-to-hand combat into one talent, unless you want to try to list all the ways in which she's adept at hand-to-hand combat.

Also, in what way would you call the laws of Corona a talent of hers? I mean, as ruling queen, she's clearly aware of them, knows them, but I can't, off the top of my head, recall any particular display of being talented in them.

However, I'd say one of her biggest talents which you didn't list is diplomacy. Also, "hawk training" has the specific name of "falconry".

I do wish we could see the portrait she showed Rapunzel in its entirety, though. There's stuff in the margins we don't get a good look at.

Anyway, I'd recommend going through your list and assessing whether this is a genuine talent of hers, or simply something she wanted to be known for doing when she sat for her first portrait.

This is a bracket to determine which of the many memorable NPCs from across the Professor Layton games are the greatest.

GAMES INCLUDED: Every game except LBMR. Eternal Diva characters are also not included here.

WHAT COUNTS AS AN NPC?: Anyone who doesn't have a puzzle animation. Characters excluded are Layton, Luke, Flora, Clive, Emmy, Randall, Aurora, Des, Espella, Phoenix, Maya, Katrielle, Ernest, Sherl, Hastings, and Emiliana.

WILL THERE BE NOMINATIONS?: Nope! Every NPC will be included.

WHAT ABOUT THE LAYTONMOBILE/MOLENTARY EXPRESS?: No vehicles. Not characters.

WHAT ABOUT THE PUZZLE LADS/LASSES?: I only plan on including characters that we can speak to in-game, so no Puzzle Lads or Lasses. Sorry to the people who like them 😔

WHY IS NAIYA YOUR ICON?: In my opinion, she's one of the more underrated NPCs of the series. I'll probably cycle through some of the ones I have available to me right now.

ARE ALTER EGOS SEPERATE CHARACTERS?: No. For instance, Ratman is not included because his secret identity is in the tournament.

US OR UK NAMES?: I will try to make available as many names for the NPCs as possible! Which includes their Japanese names and as many names in the localizations as I am able to obtain from the wiki and my own sources. I'll probably reliably have the English (both versions where applicable), Japanese, and French names for every character when I do the bracket rounds. The list below however is entirely in English.

Update on Rook um now all 3 of the Rooks on mine and my husband's game are connected. They're all cousins. We've decided Hawke was actually triplets (Garrett, Marian and we've decided the name Arianna for the third) and each one had their own romance and had sent their kids away in order to protect them. All 3 Hawkes are currently deceased I think is what we've decided on and Varric had to go find them all.

We are going in and planning our world state to our own canon and we've fucked with the timeline just a bit so by Veilguard it's been 21 years since the Deep Roads. Give or take. Because fuck it we ball and also trying to figure out years is confusing to me anyway with how it's done so.

There'd three Rooks - Rook (Bethany), Bishop (Rhendon) and Rider (still debating on a name between Averyl or Valen). Rook is a Dwarf (half-human, looks more like a tall Dwarf that can dream but isn't yknow a mage), Bishop is a human and Rider did actually take on an elvish appearance much to the bafflement of everybody since they typically just look human. They have no idea they're half human.

Rook was with the Lords of Fortune, Bishop the Grey Wardens and Rider ended up with the Crows. Rook had run away when they were a young teen and joined up with them, Bishop was with his uncle Carver in the Wardens and Rider's caretakers got axed or something and the Croes found this tiny toddler flipping them off and decided yknow what you're coming with us kid. Rook is a warrior, Bishop is a mage and Rider is a rogue.

Rook -> Varric/Marian's daughter.

Bishop -> Garrett/Isabela's son.

Rider -> Arianna/Fenris's kid.

The mom's all kinda had to hide their own pregnancies from the world and Marian damn well hid the entire pregnancy from everyone except Aveline and maybe Isabela. Not even her own siblings knew. Varric found out about Bethany on that mission to the fade because Marian knew that it was coming to a point she knew she had to go back for her daughter, despite how crazy everything had been and seeing she was gonna have to stay back finally caved. So Varric went to find his daughter and that's also when Isabela asked him to get Bishop and to find Rider, and he got a tip off either from her or Fenris when they confirmed they found them.

Yet another great story Varric won't tell anyone. Though they will find out.

Cersei would be an almond mom. Robert Baratheon doesn't even change into another account before leaving comments on women's bikini pics. Those comments mostly consist of emojis like 🔥🔥🔥🍆💦.

The Lannister have a name in finance, the Starks would be construction and landlords, the Greyjoy fishing and oil rigs, Martells would be major players in the art world and club scene, and the Arryns would be big in the judicial world.

Sandor Clegane has either a smartphone with the apps that came with the phone or an older version of a cellphone with buttons (people still use those). If he has the older one, he secretly has an amazing high score on one of the pre-installed games. He'd know the major sites, but not really have accounts on any of them. Probably not totally inept with tech. He'd have Google alerts set on a couple of people. Arianna had a crush on Luke when they were young but as they grew up she realized that the crush was only passing

Layton is aware in his heart that he loves Luke as much as a biological son is just the thought of not seeing him for a long time makes him suffer and close in even more (as is shown in the lost future that he knew Luke had to move but just thinking about it was making him suffer and he was in fact trying to live this adventure as long as possible with him if we also count that he cried because Layton did not want Luke to leave either)

Luke's presence alone helped the professor heal from the pain of losing Claire and after the scene of the Lost Future, Luke hugged the professor and he must have told him that he won't let him suffer any more and that it's okay to cry if he wants to.

There is no evidence that Marina and Luke are husband and wife despite everything Marina calls herself that, which means that their relationship is so strong that they love each other to the point that they already consider themselves as such however they are de facto cohabitants

The last name "Triton" on Marina is a last name given by Layton fans in fact in the anime she never tells his last name

Luke and Layton, after the events of Azran Legacy, spend a few moments as godfather and stepson, with Layton telling Luke that seeing him die was the greatest pain he has ever felt and that he does not want to lose him, and vice versa, with Luke telling him that by hugging him, at least they would be together in Heaven, with the professor agreeing by hugging Luke as tightly as he could, telling him that he will not go anywhere, even when the time comes, without his apprentice (best friend and stepson), hoping for both of them to live much longer, so that they can both tell Aurora, and all the loved ones up there, about the incredible adventures they have had.

Layton after the events of the Lost Future he did not solve any case that was too important because he missed Luke with Flora who surely must have offered to accompany him but with Layton who refused because for him Luke is irreplaceable however, he did not refuse a hand from Flora in his time of need.

Luke wrote to Clive sometimes to tell he that he forgives Clive helping him avoid too severe a punishment by testifying with the professor during the trial

Bill Hawks was finally punished and the incident of 10 years ago unearthed and solved with the professor finally solving the riddle related to him and him alone but this time wasn't alone like 10 years ago.

Of all the letters Layton receives, Luke's are the ones he impatiently waits for every day.

Despite everything he found out that his best friend from his teenage years is alive the professor did not stop being an archaeologist discovering in all these years that he finally interested and liked archaeology, basically Randall at the end just pushed him to try.

The same thing did Claire who directed the professor on how to behave as a "perfect" gentleman in that academic society understanding in the end that he didn't have to be one forcibly every day of his life since it was seen that he is not perfect but he is a gentleman at heart.

Luke and Layton have both gone through experiences that are not at all un-painful and both have lost someone very dear to them at least once or twice: Layton with Claire and Luke (in the Aslant Legacy) and Luke with Aurora and Emmy only the latter does not yet feel ready to return and Luke has been resurrected through Aurora's sacrifice.

Aurora was only alive for a few months before she was murdered.

Rachel hoped she'd live on in Layton's memories but he forgot everything about her.

Luke is reminded of Aurora everyone he looks at Flora.

Kamilla was alive and conscious when the boat sank. She would have been knocked onto the ground by the waves as the room began to fill with water.

Claire's death was completely preventable and Bill faced no consequences.

Sophia gave up everything for her daughter only to watch her die during childbirth.

The Targent agents who were killed in the sanctuary were likely forced to work for Targent against their will and their families never knew what happened to them.

Since Baron Reinhold's diary was in Dahlia's room, she likely knows how much he hated her and how she'll never be Viola.

Katrielle's biological father believes both his wife and baby are dead.

Anton learned that the love of his life was dead, the daughter he never knew was dead, and most of his life was an illusion all in one day.

Layton and Randall are no longer best friends.

The same man who rocked Desmond to sleep murdered his wife and daughter.

Kathryn was with the mages in the fight at Ostagar (And a warden candidate). She joined Alistair and Tobias to stop the Blight. Afterwards, in mourning, she joined the Wardens fully and became Warden Commander of Vigil's Keep. Tobias scarred physically and emotionally, reluctantly joined the Wardens. After the Blight he was named Prince Consort (Warden King at times) with Queen Anora (his lover, Zevran, stopped by occasionally).

Thia Surana / Theon Mahariel

Thia escaped the Circle with Jowan but a storm hit, in its rage, separated them. Theon, blighted and alone, had continued to search for Tamlen. In his search he stumbled upon Thia. She, having been raised mostly in the Circle did not know how to survive in the wilderness. Neither wanting to be alone again, were an awkward pairing, yet comforted in the company. After the Blight Thia rescued Jowan from being taken back to the Circle. They stayed and learned with the Dalish for a time. But Jowan couldn't stay with them and went his own way. Thia still cared for him, but she had find her place as a first and future Keeper to a clan. Sadly, Theon was killed during the final battle against the Blight in Denerim.

Dellun Tabris / Janei Royce-Tabris (half sibling)

The Tabris' have different mothers but similar personalities. Only difference is that Dellun would do anything, no matter how violent or back stabbing, to rise in power. While Janei would do anything in her power to protect those she cares about. Escaping the Alienage and Denerim after Janei killed the Arl's son, they traveled until they came across the town Honnleath. Bumping into the Warden Tobias, they cleared the darkspawn out together. Dellun was bitter about the others not agreeing to the demon's offer. He nearly got himself killed fighting his own sister. Janei couldn't go through with something like that, and from there they went their separate ways (and Janei befriended Shale). Dellun lived but now on his own traveled in a weakened state. He ended up finding Haven accidentally. He wasn't much of a believer of the Maker and Andraste but he could see the power their Reavers had. They didn't have many elf followers, but he proved himself dedicated to their ways. He was killed when the Wardens finally showed up seeking the Urn of Sacred Ashes. Janei, proving herself during the Blight, was permitted into the Denerim Guard. Tobias later assigned her to his Royal Guard.

Jorren Brosca / Lathena Aeducan

Jorren was clever enough to convince Jarvia to keep him and Leske as a members of the Carta. They just couldn't go around in public anymore. He helped the Wardens take Jarvia out and traveled with them in the Deep Roads. There they met Lathena, after she had been exiled she lucked out, and ran into the Legion of the Dead. They are the only reason she survived the Deep Roads. She joined the fight in Denerim against the Archdemon. Jorren never had the chance, he suffered a critical blow in the Deep Roads protecting Morrigan (whom he professed his love to). Lathena regained respect from Orzammar and her brother the King for fighting during the Blight. She remained with the Legion of the Dead, making a vow to protect her people to the best of her abilities.

Arianna hid that she was a blood mage from everyone, regardless of what magic she used, she did the best she could as the Champion of Kirkwall. But working hard also means she partied even harder, with both drink and partners. She had an open relationship with Isabela after Fenris' one night stand. Anders was the only one that she considered a committed relationship.
