C. W. Sparks Contractor 1925 (photo taken by me in May of this year).
Sparks was a director of The California-Arizona Construction Co. of Los Angeles, CA, which incorporated with a capital stock of $160,000. “The company is being formed to engage in a general engineering-contracting business in Southern California and Arizona, expecting to operate in all classes of street and highway paving, sewer construction, etc. When organized the new company will take over the business and probably the plants and equipment of the Barber Asphalt Paving Co. in this territory, the latter to retire from construction work on the Pacific Coast.” Apparently, Sparks and some of his co-directors had “for some time been connected with the Barber company.” (Southwest Contractor, May 29, 1914, pgs. 8-9).
Sad to say C. W. Sparks and Maida Dorothy Sparks were foreclosed upon by Hulda Franciska Schmidt in November of 1918. The L.A. County Sheriff was selling “Lot seventy-one of Tract number 2140 (commonly known as The McCarthy Company’s West Ninth Street Heights) as per map recorded in book 21, page 185 of maps in the office of the county recorder of [Los Angeles] county]. Together with the tenements, hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining.”
(Southwest Builder and Contractor, Volume 52, F.W. Dodge Company, 1918).
In 1921, Sparks received “a truck load of 480 feet of 18-inch and 60 feet of 24-inch Armco ingot iron pipe” for Los Angeles County road near Puenti, twenty miles from Los Angeles (“Shipping Culverts by Truck.” The Highway Magazine, April, 1921, Vol. XII, No. 3, Armco Culvert & Flume Manufacturers’ Association, 1921).
In 1922, Sparks worked out of the San Fernando Building (#433), which is at 400-410 S. Main Street in the historic core of downtown Los Angeles. From there, he “submitted a low bid for the installation of an ornamental lighting system on Sixth Street between Pacific Avenue and Gaffey Street, San Pedro district, and will receive the contract for the work.” He also bid but lost “the contract for the installation of an ornamental street-lighting system on certain streets at La Jolla, near San Diego, Cal.” (Electrical Records and Buyer’s Reference, Volume 33, Buyers’ Reference Company, 1922).
In 1926, Sparks was located in one listing at 142 N. Commonwealth Ave. (today in Rampart Village neighborhood of Los Angeles). He submitted the low bid for improving Prospect Ave. between Talmadge St. and Vermont Ave., including grading, concrete paving, “remodfi. with rock and oil, ...unplas. light curb, ...course sec. walk,” gutter, storm drain, and sewers. Higher bidders included some I’ve written about before, including Oswald, McCray, Curtis, Griffith, Shafer, and Spencer & Holt (Building and Engineering News, Volume 26, Issue 1, 1926). In another listing the same year, Sparks was located at 1033 W. 32nd St. (right near USC) and submitted the low bid to the Board of Public Works for improving Argosy Way between Tuxedo Terrace and Canyon Dr., involving grading, concrete pavement, curb, special curb, unplastered curb, walk, stairway, sanitary sewer, and “hse. conn.”

I'm going to have to shout out Argosy, too! It's at 116 East 59th Street (Manhattan) and it's open from M-F 11-6 each day. It is incredible if you're looking for used books, rare books and special collections, etc. It smells so good in there.
I may be biased because I'm an archivist, but Argosy is a delight. It even still has a really old elevator that has to be operated by staff manually, which is a fun treat.
Hi Neil!
I'll be in NYC next week with some free evenings. Do you have any bookstore recommendations?
Thanks for all that you do!
The Strand Bookstore is unique, and has improved in recent decades by being a regular bookshop AND an enormous second hand bookshop. The Mysterious Bookshop is a delight if you like mysteries.

Teaser under cut:
Astera was abuzz with activity, to the point that it was even busier than before the first attempt to capture Zorah Magdaros. Cannons and cannonballs were piled in teetering mountains that threatened to crush any unfortunate souls that bumped into them. Members of the logistics division dashed to and fro, carrying crates of supplies to whichever section needed them. High above, the workshop was working overtime, cranking out weapons and armor as fast as they could be put into the hands of waiting Commission Members.
Izuku looked over all of this from the raised command deck, thankful not to be caught in the melee. It reminded him of the trains back in Mustafu city during rush hour. People were just as likely to shout at anyone who got in their way here as they had been back home, which was comforting in some ways. He could almost close his eyes and feel like he was back home.
Before he could get lost in the noise, the Commander’s booming voice caught his attention.
“Now that everyone is here, it’s time we began our briefing,” he said, thumping the table for emphasis.
The table, like the rest of Astera, was absolutely covered in supplies for the upcoming mission. Maps and charts for both sea and land overlapped each other, and stacks of requisition forms and mission briefs towered over them all. Interspersed with it all were numerous empty and half empty inkwells that threatened to shower everyone and everything with ink if the papers beneath them were disturbed.
Surrounding the table were representatives from each division of the Commission, each looking haggard from the long hours they had been putting in to arrange the assault on the Elder Dragon.
By comparison, Izuku and Mina looked exceedingly fresh, having got a full night of sleep and a full meal before coming to the meeting, which just served to make Izuku feel even more out of place. The others here had been integral to designing and arranging their plan at every step of the way. Izuku, meanwhile, had only relayed what information he and Mina had gleaned from the First Wyverian and given his thoughts on the nature of the “Everstream” that the being had mentioned. They weren’t even particularly insightful thoughts, in his opinion, since anyone would have come to similar conclusions with the evidence before them. The Commander and Field Team Leader had jumped on them, though, and started basing a large amount of the operation around them, which made Izuku feel more than a little bashful.
“Now, thanks to the diligent efforts of our star hunters from the Fifth fleet, we finally have some insight into Zorah Magdaros’s intentions. It is following a path of concentrated energy henceforth referred to as the ‘Everstream,’ a path that will lead it inward towards the center of the New World. Unfortunately, it is carrying an immense amount of bioenergy with it, energy which threatens to turn this entire land into a blasted hellscape if it is unleashed.”
A ripple of worry and confusion passed through the division heads. They had known about it ahead of time—the Commander had made sure that everyone had gotten a report about it—but it was different to hear the facts stated so plainly, and by someone so authoritative. Even Izuku, who had known before anyone, felt his stomach clench at the Commander’s words.
“Commander, shouldn’t we begin to evacuate Astera?” the Analytics Director asked. “The Third Fleet’s mobile base could carry a large number of people…”
“Not all of them, though,” the Smithy pointed out.
“And not nearly fast enough,” the Chief Botanist added. “No, our only hope is to take down Zorah Magdaros.”
“Quite the tall order, considering how our last attempt went,” the Tech Chief said, crossing his arms and frowning. “'Sides, wouldn't taking the beast down blow us all to bits?"
"Not to mention it would defeat the entire purpose of us coming here," the Chief Biologist said. "We're here to study Zorah Magdaros, not eliminate it!”
“Be that as it may, I do not believe we have any other choice,” the Commander said, regret clear in his voice.
“Um, I might have an idea,” Mina said, raising her paw into the air in order to be seen over the table.
The various chiefs and division heads looked a little skeptical, but the Commander shrugged his shoulders and gestured for her to continue.
“The problem is Zorah dying in this Everstream, right?” Mina said, clambering up onto the table so that she could be at eye level with most of the others. “Well, what if we took Zorah, and just… pushed it somewhere else? Then it wouldn’t be as bad.”
The smug expression she wore reminded Izuku a lot of the cat pictures that often floated around social media sites back on Earth, and sent a pang of homesickness through him. He could also swear the idea she had just proposed sounded familiar, but couldn’t quite place where he had heard it before.
“That… isn’t a bad idea…” the Chief Biologist said after a moment of consideration. When the others looked at him incredulously, he continued, “I’ll admit, the proposal is a little simplistic, but the basic premise is solid. The Everstream borders the sea at numerous points. If we were to lure it into the open water…”
“We could mitigate the blast!” the Commander said, a wide grin splitting his normally grim face. “And the bioenergy it released would start a whole new ecosystem!”
“More sea-bound monsters,” the Huntsman said, clicking his tongue in disgust. “Just what we need.”
“Need I remind you, Commander, that our supplies are still low from our previous attempt at capturing Zorah Magdaros,” the Provisions Manager said.
“Actually, I have some good news on that front,” the Commander replied, his grin growing even wider.
Before anyone could ask what he meant, he put his fingers in his mouth and let loose a piercing whistle that had people across the tradeyard flinching in surprise. The only one that didn’t was a thin, wiry man that Izuku didn’t recognize. He was shirtless, and his exposed skin had been darkened by long exposure to the sun. When he heard the Commander’s whistle, he perked up and trotted over to the command deck with shaky steps, as though he couldn’t quite keep his balance.
“Ahoy, Commander!” the man said, snapping a quick salute once he reached the table. “What do ya need me for?”
“At ease,” the Commander said, returning the salute before turning back to address the table. “The Captain here has brought us an entire boatload of supplies, courtesy of the Guild back home.”
“Aye,” the Captain added, “I’ve got ballistae, cannon balls, explosive charges, and everything else you’d need for a siege. Even got a special weapon for ya, direct from the Guild.”
“A special weapon?” the Smithy said, sounding intrigued.
“Aye, the Argosy’s armed with the latest in anti-Elder Dragon weaponry. She’s got a Dragonator in her bow, and enough boilers in her belly to run it. Just give her seawater and coal, and she’ll drive off anything what’s giving you trouble.”
“Excellent,” the Commander said, “With the Dragonator in hand, I think we have everything we need to drive Zorah Magdaros off. What do the rest of you say?”
“Aye Commander,” everyone else said, in nearly perfect unison.
“Then I say it’s high time we get started. Has the research division managed to plot Zorah’s route?”
“We have it down to three possibilities,” the Chief Biologist replied, adjusting his spectacles. “Once our scout drakes come back, we should have the correct one. An hour or two at most.”
“Fine work. Once you have it, we’ll find a spot to set up and start construction of another barrier, assuming the Third Fleet is still up to the task?”
“Tell us where you need it, and we’ll build the toughest barrier you’ve ever seen,” the Smithy said, crossing his arms with a confident smirk.
The Commander nodded, then turned to Izuku and Mina, who straightened under his forceful gaze.
“As for you two, leave the planning to us and make sure you’re prepared for the battle to come. Elder Dragons don’t go down easily, and I have a feeling that this will be a battle for the ages. If your equipment needs any adjustments, make sure it gets done right away. If you need, you can put it on my tab.”
It was an expression of absolute faith in their abilities, and one that Izuku had never heard of the Commander extending before. If the stunned looks on the Division Head’s faces were anything to go by, it was indeed a rare honor, and one that Izuku intended to live up to.
“We’ll be ready, sir,” Izuku said, snapping a salute of his own.
“Ready to kick some butt!” Mina added helpfully. Her own salute was much more sloppy, but was equally heartfelt.
“I would expect nothing less,” the Commander replied. “Dismissed, all of you. This will be one for the history books, so be sure to give it your all.”

Why TinyML is a giant opportunity https://ift.tt/35QdGDS
The world is about to get a whole lot smarter.
As the new decade begins, we’re hearing predictions on everything from fully remote workforces to quantum computing. However, one emerging trend is scarcely mentioned on tech blogs – one that may be small in form but has the potential to be massive in implication. We’re talking about microcontrollers.
There are 250 billion microcontrollers in the world today. 28.1 billion units were sold in 2018 alone, and IC Insights forecasts annual shipment volume to grow to 38.2 billion by 2023.
Perhaps we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves though, because you may not know exactly what we mean by microcontrollers. A microcontroller is a small, special purpose computer dedicated to performing one task or program within a device. For example, a microcontroller in a television controls the channel selector and speaker system. It changes those systems when it receives input from the TV remote. Microcontrollers and the components they manage are collectively called embedded systems since they are embedded in the devices they control. Take a look around — these embedded systems are everywhere, in nearly any modern electronic device. Your office machines, cars, medical devices, and home appliances almost all certainly have microcontrollers in them.
With all the buzz about cloud computing, mobile device penetration, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT) over the past few years, these microcontrollers (and the embedded systems they power) have largely been underappreciated. This is about to change.
The strong growth in microcontroller sales in recent years has been largely driven by the broad tailwinds of the IoT. Microcontrollers facilitate automation and embedded control in electronic systems, as well as the connection of sensors and applications to the IoT. These handy little devices are also exceedingly cheap, with an average price of 60 cents per unit (and dropping). Although low in cost, the economic impact of what microcontrollers enable at the system level is massive, since the sensor data from the physical world is the lifeblood of digital transformation in industry. However, this is only part of the story.
A coalescence of several trends has made the microcontroller not just a conduit for implementing IoT applications but also a powerful, independent processing mechanism in its own right. In recent years, hardware advancements have made it possible for microcontrollers to perform calculations much faster. Improved hardware coupled with more efficient development standards have made it easier for developers to build programs on these devices. Perhaps the most important trend, though, has been the rise of tiny machine learning, or TinyML. It’s a technology we’ve been following since investing in a startup in this space.
Big potential
TinyML broadly encapsulates the field of machine learning technologies capable of performing on-device analytics of sensor data at extremely low power. Between hardware advancements and the TinyML community’s recent innovations in machine learning, it is now possible to run increasingly complex deep learning models (the foundation of most modern artificial intelligence applications) directly on microcontrollers. A quick glance under the hood shows this is fundamentally possible because deep learning models are compute-bound, meaning their efficiency is limited by the time it takes to complete a large number of arithmetic operations. Advancements in TinyML have made it possible to run these models on existing microcontroller hardware.
In other words, those 250 billion microcontrollers in our printers, TVs, cars, and pacemakers can now perform tasks that previously only our computers and smartphones could handle. All of our devices and appliances are getting smarter thanks to microcontrollers.
TinyML represents a collaborative effort between the embedded ultra-low power systems and machine learning communities, which traditionally have operated largely independently. This union has opened the floodgates for new and exciting applications of on-device machine learning. However, the knowledge that deep learning and microcontrollers are a perfect match has been pretty exclusive, hidden behind the walls of tech giants like Google and Apple. This becomes more obvious when you learn that this paradigm of running modified deep learning models on microcontrollers is responsible for the “Okay Google” and “Hey Siri,” functionality that has been around for years.
But why is it important that we be able to run these models on microcontrollers? Much of the sensor data generated today is discarded because of cost, bandwidth, or power constraints – or sometimes a combination of all three. For example, take an imagery micro-satellite. Such satellites are equipped with cameras capable of capturing high resolution images but are limited by the size and number of photos they can store and how often they can transmit those photos to Earth. As a result, such satellites have to store images at low resolution and at a low frame rate. What if we could use image detection models to save high resolution photos only if an object of interest (like a ship or weather pattern) was present in the image? While the computing resources on these micro-satellites have historically been too small to support image detection deep learning models, TinyML now makes this possible.
Another benefit of deploying deep learning models on microcontrollers is that microcontrollers use very little energy. Compared to systems that require either a direct connection to the power grid or frequent charges or replacement of the battery, a microcontroller can run an image recognition model continuously for a year with a single coin battery. Furthermore, since most embedded systems are not connected to the internet, these smart embedded systems can be deployed essentially anywhere. By enabling decision-making without continuous connectivity to the internet, the ability to deploy deep learning models on embedded systems creates an opportunity for completely new types of products.
Early TinyML applications
It’s easy to talk about applications in the abstract, but let’s narrow our focus to specific applications likely to be available in the coming years that would impact the way we work or live:
Mobility: If we apply TinyML to sensors ingesting real-time traffic data, we can use them to route traffic more effectively and reduce response times for emergency vehicles. Companies like Swim.AI use TinyML on streaming data to improve passenger safety and reduce congestion and emissions through efficient routing.
Smart factory: In the manufacturing sector, TinyML can stop downtime due to equipment failure by enabling real-time decision. It can alert workers to perform preventative maintenance when necessary, based on equipment conditions.
Retail: By monitoring shelves in-store and sending immediate alerts as item quantities dwindle, TinyML can prevent items from becoming out of stock.
Agriculture: Farmers risk severe profit losses from animal illnesses. Data from livestock wearables that monitor health vitals like heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, etc. can help predict the onslaught of disease and epidemics.
Before TinyML goes mainstream …
As intriguing as TinyML may be, we are very much in the early stages, and we need to see a number of trends occur before it gets mainstream adoption.
Every successful ecosystem is built on engaged communities. A vibrant TinyML community will lead to faster innovation as it increases awareness and adoption. We need more investments in open-source projects supporting TinyML (like the work Google is doing around TensorFlow for broader machine learning), since open source allows each contributor to build on top of the work of others to create thorough and robust solutions.
Other core ecosystem participants and tools will also be necessary:
Chipset manufacturers and platforms like Qualcomm, ST, and ETA Compute can work hand-in-hand with developers to ensure chipsets are ready for the intended applications, and that platform integrations are built to facilitate rapid application development.
Cloud players can invest in end-to-end optimized platform solutions that allow seamless exchange and processing of data between devices and the cloud.
Direct support is needed from device-level software infrastructure companies such as Memfault, which is trying to improve firmware reliability, and Argosy Labs, which is tackling data security and sharing on the device level. These kinds of changes give developers more control over software deployments with greater security from nearly any device.
Lifecycle TinyML tools need to be built that facilitate dataset management, algorithm development, and version management and that enhance the testing and deployment lifecycle.
However, innovators are ultimately what drives change. We need more machine learning experts who have the resources to challenge the status quo and make TinyML even more accessible. Pete Warden, head of the TensorFlow mobile team, has an ambitious task of building machine learning applications that run on a microcontroller for a year using only a hearing aid battery for power. We need more leaders like Pete to step up and lead breakthroughs to make TinyML a near-term reality.
In summary: TinyML is a giant opportunity that’s just beginning to emerge. Expect to see quite a bit of movement in this space over the next year or two.

Law Students Unable To Pay Rent Without Student Loans After School Goes Into Receivership
‘Where’s my loan money?’
What happens when the company that owns and operates your law school has been put into a federal receivership because it’s drowning in tens of millions of dollars of debt? If you ask the students at Western State College of Law at Argosy University, whose classes started on January 14, they’ll tell you that it means going without the loan disbursements necessary to purchase their books, pay their rent, and buy food.
Dream Center Education Holdings, which operates the 53-year-old law school, was placed in receivership the same week classes started, and the consequences were almost immediate. Not only did the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission quickly notify Argosy University that it could lose its accreditation unless it showed within a year that it had the money to continue operating, but numerous staff members at the law school have already been let go, including librarians, the career services director, the dean of alumni engagement, and the executive assistant to the deans.
The receivership also caused issues with the Department of Education, and student loan disbursements have since been held up for the first three weeks of class. Students say that since January 19, the administration has told them that they’re trying to get their student loans disbursed, but thus far, nothing has happened — and if it has, they’ve been kept in the dark about it.
A source relayed that he’d been in touch with the special counsel for the receiver who was “pretty cryptic with his explanation of what was going on; he made it sound like the receiver was looking for a buyer for WSU.” To our understanding, students at Western State have not been told about this development.
On that note, student leaders at the school are now expressing their concerns about an unfair lack of transparency from the administration, as their classmates have been seen crying in the hallways. Here’s what one student told us:
We’ve been told since January 19 that the school is working to get our financial aid and still nothing. Students are contemplating dropping out, dropping to part time, whether to buy food or pay rent or buy books. The school requested that students “petition” for $50-$100 Visa gift cards to help with expenses and we still haven’t even received that.
Third-year students at the school are particularly troubled by what’s going on:
Our foundation has been shaken and this delay is not only threatening the security and stability of every student here, but it has caused such a disruption that it has diverted our focus away from where it needs to be, on our classes and our bar prep. Our success is being sabotaged by something beyond our control.
We received no warning, which means we were robbed of an opportunity to make this impact less severe. Now we deal with the carnage of something we did not see coming. On a fundamental level that is wrong.
We’ve reached out to the administration at Western State Law to gain greater insight as to what is happening and when students will receive their loans for the semester but have not yet received a response.
What is happening to students at Western State Law isn’t right, and it certainly isn’t fair. Based upon student accounts of the situation as it unfolds, they’re being forced to suffer in the dark without the bare essentials that they need to survive. Something must be done about this situation, and fast, especially if this is having an adverse impact upon students’ mental health and wellness.
If you’re a student at Western State Law, we ask that you please check up on your classmates and make sure they’re alright. If you think something seems off, talk to them about the situation and make sure they get help. Why TinyML is a giant opportunity

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Case Studies Presentation
Assignment 2: LASA 1: Case Studies Presentation
Assignment 2: LASA 1: Case Studies Presentation
By the due date assigned, create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to educate a group of medical students participating in their grand rounds. There should be at least ten slides in your Microsoft PowerPoint as well as a title slide and a slide listing all your sources for creating this slideshow. You should also create speaker notes for each slide of your presentation, which include the main talking points for the topic addressed on the slide. Save the presentation as AU_PSY350_M3_A2_LastName_FirstInitial.ppt. Submit your assignment to the Submissions Area.
In order to create your slideshow, review the two case studies and then answer the questions following each case study:
Case Study 1: Isaac is a fifty-nine-year-old man. Several months ago, he noticed a slight tremor in his hands. He assumed this to be a normal consequence of aging. The tremor, however, gradually worsened, along with some muscular stiffness and slowness in initiating movement. The tremor was more pronounced when he was not voluntarily moving. Isaac was referred to a neurologist, who diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease. After visiting the neurologist, Isaac and his family ask you to further explain this disorder. Isaac also asks about L-dopa as a treatment—the neurologist had mentioned L-dopa as an effective medication but had instead prescribed selegiline:
What are the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease?
What are the possible causes? Be sure to discuss both hereditary and environmental factors thought to contribute to this disease.
What parts of the brain does this disease affect?
Why do you think the neurologist prescribed selegiline instead of L-dopa?
Case Study 2: Sabrina is a twenty-seven-year-old woman who recently underwent a corpus callosotomy. Initially after surgery, when given a verbal command, Sabrina demonstrated marked apraxia of the left hand. However, the extent of this issue diminished over time. Answer the following questions about this client:
What disorder was most likely being treated by this operation, and how is the surgery performed?
In what way is the surgery expected to help Sabrina?
What are the risks and benefits of the surgery? Compare these to the risks and benefits of an alternative treatment. If the decision were yours, which would you recommend? Explain your decision.
What was the cause of the apraxia?
What does the reduction in apraxia symptoms tell us about hemispheric specialization?
Click here to follow tips on creating a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. For this assignment, you are required to cite, at a minimum, the online course and the textbook for the course. Additional sources are welcome. Scholarly sources are preferred and can be found in the Argosy University online library. For reputable web sources, look for .gov or .edu sites as opposed to .com sites. Do not use Wikipedia.
