Ardmore Legacy
You can find it if you want it But do you want it? For the details… Ardmore, located near the town of Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire, is one of the relatively few Highland distilleries still operating in the zone of the Highlands lying east of Speyside. It was founded in 1898 by Adam Teacher, of the Glasgow-based Teacher’s blending family, and it remained under control of William Teacher and Sons…

At first I was confused. After some very aged and truly remarkable independent bottlings, the Kensington Wine Market whisky advent calendar has backslid to a truly budget-conscious single malt. But it’s kind of a genius choice, much like using your ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ box set to achieve ergonomic and aesthetic perfection for your Zoom calls during a pandemic.
I first tired the Ardmore Legacy in February of 2017. I had recently tried some fairly experimental whiskies, like the Amador Double Barrel Bourbon, Glenfiddich's first Experimental Series release, the IPA cask, and a month's worth of independent bottlings from the Secret Spirits advent calendar. So to slide into a nearly-bottom shelf single malt could've been a huge failure. But it was exceedingly charming, especially considering the price point.
I've banged on this drum countless times, but I'll never pass up an opportunity to say it again and again: whisky freaks need to ADJUST THEIR EXPECTATIONS. When I say this is charming, I don't mean compared to a $350 bottle of the Dalmore's King Alexander III or a similarly-priced Glenmorangie Signet or whatever boutique bourbon is going for $200 these days. I mean if you're looking for a pleasant every day sipper, this is something for which you should be exceedingly appreciative.
The nose opens up super-sweet, leading with milk chocolate, honey, and caramel. That rounds out with an apple and pear fruitiness, layered with a strong undercurrent of smoke.
The palate entry is soft and thin, but very palatable and smooth. A touch of chocolatey sweetness is quickly overwhelmed by new spirit burn and ashy peat. There is some grainy cereal, coffee notes, oak spice and a vague nuttiness. It also has a bit of grassiness and a citrus zest zing. The finish is predictably short but unimpeachable while it sticks around.
The Ardmore is a $40 single malt, but it’s probably the best goddamn $40 single malt you’ll ever have. It kicks your McClelland’s, your Singleton, your Speyburn, your Ainsley Brae straight in the dick hole. It deserves to appear late in the advent, and it will surely impress some people who come into the 23rd with low expectations.

Week 1 Good + Bad Drinks Field Research
The Proper Twelve design is a good design because it is clean and minimal. The print size is ok and the overall quality and finish of the product is exceptional. The tiger emblem represents originality and the culture/history of Proper Twelve. The Ardmore design is bad because everything is crammed in and the words are very small. It is important to have a unique and distinctive design but you shouldn’t overdo it with the intricacy.

The GreatDrams Review of 2019
let’s begin
Welcome to The GreatDrams Review of 2019, a time for me to have a swift light hearted reflection of the year that was and my personal highlights of the year.
Well what a year it has been; Boris Johnson became Prime Minister – and royally wasted everyone’s time and energy, Brexit is still a thing and is still polluting our lives on an hourly basis, my beloved Liverpool FC won the Champions League and only narrowly lost out on the Premiership – something I hope they can rectify this year, our boy Archie has continued to grow into a fantastically energetic boy who loves being awake early and not giving us a break from his Duracell-like energy levels, our village – Poynton – flooded again which was quite disconcerting and the world, of course, is even more fractured than it was last year.
Crazy to even start reflecting on most of the above, but thankfully I only need to reflect on GreatDrams, and of course what’s been going on in whisky.
I say it every year, but this year has been amongst my busiest;
270,000 + GreatDrams readers this year
94k followers across social media and email
8,960 (approx) samples of our products given out at events to thirsty whisky drinkers
1,825 bottles of GreatDrams limited edition Scotch whisky sold to our awesome customers
1,510 articles now on GreatDrams (including a load scheduled for future publishing)
133 hours airborne on planes to presentations and meetings (that’s over five and a half actual days in the air…)
90 hours on trains to meetings (that’s nearly 4 full days spend on trains…)
87 events including Makers Markets and Pub in the Park promoting and selling the GreatDrams independently bottled whiskies
46 trains to meetings in London
32 flights to distilleries and meetings in six countries (India, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, USA and China)
18 distilleries visited across Scotland, Ireland, India, Kentucky
11 casks bought for our independent bottling programme
15 events attended (lower than usual due to hectic consulting schedule and family life)
5 whisky shows and festivals attended
4 publications written for including Whisky Magazine and Drinks International
4 award wins – Double Gold Star for our Girvan 11 Year Old at the Great Taste Awards 2019, Gold Star for our Craigellachie 11 Year Old at the Great Taste Awards 2019, Drinks Producer of the Year at the Cheshire Food & Drink Awards and Best Online Spirits Resource (second year in a row)
4 GreatDrams independently bottled whiskies, BenRiach 5 Year Old, Girvan 11 Year Old (which scored 91.5 in the 2020 Whisky Bible), our Christmas 2019 Limited Edition Blended Scotch Whisky and our Glentauchers 10 Year Old, available here
Countless whiskies tried, enjoyed and commented on.
Some particular highlights
Meeting so many really passionate whisky drinkers at the events we have been doing with our own independently bottled whiskies, hearing such great feedback and seeing the bottles fly off the shelves – our Christmas limited edition especially as it sold out before we even got to the 10th November!
Getting to visit India and Delhi for the first time – a place that can only be described as ‘synchronised chaos’
Visiting Kentucky again, albeit briefly (one day!) was superb
Visiting China twice in twelve weeks was quite intense… I know Shanghai surprisingly well now
Spending time with so many icons of the whisky world including, but not limited to Dr. Bill Lumsden, Richard Patterson, John McCheyne, Fraser Campbell, Stephanie Macleod, Ewan Gunn, Stephen Rankin, Billy Leighton and Brian Nation
In whisky I was fortunate to try some incredible whiskies (in the order in which I remembered them or tried them, not preference);
Bushmills Distillery Exclusive 2019 Whistler Indian whisky concepts Boutique-y Ardmore 19 Year Old Riverset Rye Blue Note Bourbon Aberfeldy 21 Year Old Madeira Aberfeldy 16 Year Old Madeira Aberfeldy 28 Year Old Exceptional Cask Royal Brackla 16 Year Old Aultmore 12 Year Old Aultmore 21 Year Old Aultmore 22 Year Old Exceptional Cask Yoichi Japanese Single Malt Dewar’s Double Double 21 Year Old Dewar’s Double Double 27 Year Old Dewar’s Double Double 32 Year Old James E Pepper 1776 Rye Forest Whisky Blend 001 Forest Whisky Private Cask 001 Ailsa Bay 1.2 Wolfburn Aurora Dewar’s Caribbean Smooth Aberfeldy 20 Year Old Self Fill Silkie Irish Whiskey Johnnie Walker Black Label Aberfeldy 17 Year Old BYO Jura Seven Wood Whisky Works 29 Year Old Glaswegian Single Grain Whisky Works 10 Year Old King of Trees Pure Scot The Glenlivet Triple Cask Rare Cask Craigellachie 21 Year Old Hotel Arran 10 Year Old NEW Glen Moray 21 Year Old Glen Moray Rhum Agricole Jameson 18 Year Old NEW Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy Aberfeldy 20 Year Old Exceptional Cask Lakes Whiskymakers Edition #1 Lagavulin 10 Year Old Kininvie Works – Experiment 001 Kininvie Works – Experiment 002 Kininvie Works – Experiment 003 The Balvenie Tun 1509 – Batch 6 Peaky Blinders Irish Whiskey Royal Salute Snow Polo Teeling Chinquapin
Along with all these stunning whiskies and a very busy year, we have seen Scotch exports up, volumes up and huge investment into new and expanding distillery operations throughout Scotland and Ireland in particular, with many new distilleries opening up in England too.
2020 looks to be another busy year with many new distilleries having spirit old enough to start releasing their first bottlings after three or more years of patience, and I’m sure a degree of nervous anticipation.
Thanks for reading, following, liking, Tweeting, Facebooking, Instagramming and tagging GreatDrams across the web this year, I’ve had a blast and it’s been so lovely to help so many GreatDrammers with their whisky choices and to meet a fair few of you at events around the UK over the last twelve months.
As always, please do send me pics of your whisky exploration, or tag me in festivities so I can share with the wider GreatDrams Network and please also keep sending your feedback, questions and comments to me, I reply to every single email I get sent; [email protected].

The Ardmore Legacy – A single malt introduced in India this year. I was amongst the lucky few to get a bottle as gift from Aneesh Bhasin of Hipcask. In fact, there were two bottles sent by different people; given that everyone knows how I love to try out new whiskeys but turned out to be a faux pas and I had to return one of them 😞
Since, I was leaving for a trip in a couple of days, was unable to get friends together so, decided to have a dram of it to remind me of what I could look forward once I came back.
As it the wont, took out my person malt glass and poured it; different colours given the ambient and white lights but seemed to be dark at first go.
A quick swirl, the first sip and a sip after – toffee & vanilla with a bit of cream – this along with the lightly peated and taste of honey.
More learned people have described this, so I will not go into more details.
Added three cubes of ice and 60ml of water, to go with a couple of unsalted cashews and it went down really easy.
Quitely recapped the bottle and decided to open it with friends sooner than later.

SOM reveals plan to add curving glass canopy to Chicago metro station
Global architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merril has unveiled its redesign for the State/Lake Station in downtown Chicago.
Skidmore, Owings and Merril (SOM) is working with construction engineers TranSystems to revamp the station on Chicago's elevated train line, which is nicknamed the L.
The station redesign includes a glass canopy
The project is being undertaken by the City of Chicago, Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).
State/Lake Station is Chicago's second busiest stop on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) network, serving six of the city's eight train lines.
The revamped station will have multiple elevators to street level
SOM's plans include a large undulating glass canopy that will cover the platforms and the new fly-over connection bridge that will be built over the road.
The canopy, which will be made from fritted glass to prevent bird strikes, will protect passengers from the elements as they board and disembark from the trains.
SOM said that the design of the canopy will reference important pieces of architecture in the city, including the John Hancock Center and the Willis Tower, two skyscrapers in Chicago also designed by the firm.
Elevators connecting the bridge to street level will make the station more accessible to users. The lifts will connect to a new bridge clad in glass and metal that will be built at the western end of the station.
A new flyover bridge will also improve access
Train platforms will be made wider and the pavements will also be widened at street level to make the station safer for passengers transiting to pedestrian or bus routes through the city.
The design of the State/Lake Station will also preserve sightlines of the nearby Chicago Theatre and other buildings along State Street.
Platforms will be made wider for improved safety
"The new State/Lake station will be a gateway to downtown for Chicagoans and visitors alike," said SOM design partner Scott Duncan.
"As one of the most visible stations in the CTA network, the design is reflective of both its location and the needs of riders, with a soaring glass canopy, comfortable spaces for passengers, and fully integrated accessible design for riders of all mobility levels."
The station will have views of the nearby theatre
Founded in 1939, SOM has offices all around the world. Recent transit projects from the practice include the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Train Hall in New York and a pair of concourse terminals for the major Chicago O'Hare Airport expansion.

Dr. Robert Smith House
855 Ardmore Ave.
Akron, Ohio
The Dr. Robert Smith House, also known as Dr. Bob's Home, is a historic house museum at 855 Ardmore Avenue in Akron, Ohio. The house was built in 1914, and purchased in 1915 by Robert and Anna Smith. Smith was a medical doctor who struggled since his college days with alcoholism. It is significant as the home from 1915 to 1950 of Dr. Bob Smith ("Dr. Bob"), one of the cofounders of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). It was here that Smith and Bill W. began the meetings that became AA, through which Smith achieved sobriety. In 1935, Bill W. spent several months living with the Smiths, and it is probably around the house's kitchen table that the principles underlying Alcoholics Anonymous were developed.
The Dr. Robert Smith House is located in a residential area northwest of downtown Akron, at the northwest corner of Ardmore and Everett Avenues. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, with Craftsman/Bungalow styling. It has a side gable roof with extended eaves showing exposed rafters, and its front face is pierced by a pair of gabled dormers. A single-story porch extends across the front, supported by brick piers and topped by a broad gabled roof. The interior has been restored to a 1930s-1940s appearance, retaining a number of features important in the history of Dr. Bob Smith's alcoholism and recovery, such as hiding places where he stashed liquor. One of the upstairs bedrooms is known as the "Surrender Room," and is where even today recovering alcoholics surrender themselves to a Higher Power according to AA's tenets.
The house was sold after Bob Smith died in 1950, and passed through several owners before its purchase in 1984 by the Founders Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the AA history and legacy. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 31, 1985, and was designated a National Historic Landmark on October 16, 2012. It is now owned by Founders Foundation, and is operated by them as a museum dedicated to the history of AA.

Kobe Bryant’s Death Stuns a Grieving Nation
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Jan. 27, 2020.--Crashing in his Lockheed-Martin, Zikorsky S-76, 12-passenger helicopter in the foggy hills of Calabasas, Calif., at 9: 45 AM, PST, Jan. 26, 41-year-old NBA legend Kobe Bean Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna [Gigi], and seven other passengers perished in a fireball Sunday morning. News of Kobe’s untimely death spread like wildfire across the sports’ world where he left an indelible mark by his excellence on-and-off the basketball court. Bryant retired from a 20-year NBA career April 13, 2016, scoring an unprecedented 60-points against the Utah Jazz in his final game at the Staples Center. What over 17,000 screaming fans saw, together with millions around the world, was Kobe’s fierce, career-long determination to succeed. Returning from dreaded Achilles tendon surgery, Kobe never made it back to the NBA Finals but showed the world his courage and legacy.
Kobe’s legacy was about not just about his raw basketball talent but about his work ethic, that his peers recognized as second to none. Kobe’s last game was supposed to honor his 20-year career but turned into Kobe’s gift back to his fans, watching him leave his heart-and-soul on the court. Scoring 60 points in his retirement game was unprecedented in NBA history. Kobe’s own idol, Chicago Bull’s icon Michael Jordan, scored 15 points April 16, 2003 in his final game with the Washington Wizards at age 40. Kobe’s final performance in a Lakers’ uniform personified his career, earning him five NBA championships, 18-appearances in the NBA All-Star Game and every other accolade in his sport. Kobe’s untimely death with his daughter Gigi mirrors how he spent his life after basketball, as a family-man, raising his four daughters, inspiring Gigi to a possible WNBA career.
At the time 17-year-old Kobe was signed by former Lakers’ executive Jerry West June 26, 1996 as the 13th First Round pick of the Charlotte Hornets, he was already an articulate young man. While he came from Philly’s town of Ardmore, Lower Merion High School, Kobe spent much of his youth in Italy playing basketball, living with his father former NBA player Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, coaching several Italian basketball teams. Kobe was fluent in English and Italian, also speaking French and Serbian. Whether West knew at the time Kobe would turn into an NBA legend is anyone’s guess. What he knew for sure is that Kobe was an exceptional, sophisticated teenager with unlimited potential on-and-off the court. Kobe won admiration of his basketball peers not only for his fiercely competitive nature and superb basketball skills but because he was the most articulate player in the league.
Kobe’s death, within a smaller NBA and celebrity community, is strangely reminiscent of the death of President John F. Kennedy Nov. 22, 1963. People on the streets all over the country and beyond were in shock, grieving openly over one of the most beloved president’s in U.S. history. Watching current and retired NBA players and fans speechless, unable to contain their emotions, harks back to the JFK assassination. When you looked at the crowds swarming the crash site in Calabasas and Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, you could see-and-hear the same shock, disbelief and grief not seen since JFK’s death. “For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning,” said 58-year-old NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Silver tried to digest the true meaning and legacy of Kobe Bean Bryant.
Reactions to Kobe’s death came far-and-wide, derailing festivities at the yearly Hollywood Grammy Awards, where Kobe’s death eclipsed the mood at America’s premier music awards’ show. “He was one of the most extraordinary players in the history of our game with accomplishments that are legendary . . . but he will be remembered most for inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete to the very best of their ability. “ Reactions to Kobe’s death show that he transcended basketball, setting the best example of an American Dream built off hard-work, determination and much-deserved success. Two years after retirement, Kobe won an Oscar March 4, 2018 for his animated short film, “Dear Basketball.” Kobe told the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that his Academy Award was as important as his NBA titles.
Praising Kobe the night before his death in Philadelphia after passing him as the third most prolific scorer in NBA history, 35-year-old Lakers’ guard LeBron James shared high praise for Kobe. “Happy to just be in any conversation with Kobe Bean Bryant, one of the all-time greatest basketball players to ever play. One of the all-time greatest Lakers,” James said, eerily reflecting as if eulogizing Kobe’s life. Twelve hours later, Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva confirmed the deaths of nine persons in a fiery helicopter crash taking the lives of Kobe, his daughter Gigi and 7 others. “I remember one thing he [Kobe] said at a childhood basketball camp,” James said. “If you want to become great at it, or want to be one of the greats, you’ve got to put the work in,” James recalled Saturday night. Kobe’s life-and-work was symbolized in his final game: Leave it all on the court—whatever you do.
