Loving your insights on the nature of True Magic! Which reminds me, I also find it interesting how: 1) The seemingly most mundane places in the Nasuverse, like a humble Café that seems to have multiple chains everywhere, seem to be the most magical places of all, and 2) how the fans have conflated Zelretch with being a troll or some kind of Trickster Mentor (like Joseph Joestar with Jotaro's gruff demeanor) who drives most magi apprentices unable to continue their craft.
1.) Not surprising since the Ahnenerbe cafes are all run by the Neco-Arcs who have the reality bending nature of being gag characters, but it’s really cool how they’re mostly used to initiate crossovers like Carnival Phantasm and All Around Type moon. Those are some of my favorite Nasuverse entries.
2.) They’re not wrong! Zelretch IS a troll and a trickster mentor. He gave the Tohsakas the Jewel Sword blueprints because they were incompetent country bumpkins and thus couldn’t possibly use it for evil unlike the Makiri and Einzbern. He freely goes in and out of the Clocktower on whims despite technically being a very high ranking professor, meaning if you happen to be studying under him you’re not gonna have a teacher for half the semester. He’s also a member of the Twenty Seven Dead Apostle Ancestors, a vampire coven whose goals are to bring about the vampire apocalypse, despite literally being the guy who killed their leader and brought them all to ruin, just for shits and giggles.
It’s just that he’s also one of the biggest badasses ever and the only reason humanity is still alive. He was the second magi ever to reach the root and used the forbidden knowledge to take out an apocalyptic monster like Crimson Moon in single combat. He shoved the whole moon backwards with a single punch so that vampire kind may not overpower humanity. He saw Arcueid Brunestud, Crimson Moon’s second daughter, perfect clone, by all means the second bringer of humanity’s demise, and was kind. He looked at Crimson Moon’s legacy and saw a child instead of a vampire. He told her that her one day she will find an opportunity to find happiness and that life is fun just by being awake to enjoy it.
He also lost much of his incredible power as soon as he defeated Crimson Moon. And it doesn’t matter to him. It’s such a good example of power being something you do not keep, but something you use and pass on after it has served its purpose (to hold on to it is to grow corrupted). Once he was nearly godlike in strength, now he enjoys his time screwing over the nerds at the Clocktower, waltzing into their courts and saving the likes of Rin Tohsaka from execution just to mess with those squares.
