#Arctic Birds

My brother and i unified my passion for birds with The Terror by assigning birds to the characters.

So far there are:

Black grouse for Sir John because of the general facial expression, color and shape, and the bird’s stubborn personality.

Common eider duck for Crozier because in my mind he is a duck and this duck’s natural habitat is in the arctic.

Snowy albatross for Tom Blanky because he’s cool like that. The pelican was a runner-up but their habitat is too far south.

Common gull for Hickey because he generates common gull energy. My mother contributed greatly to this choice.

Little auk or alle alle for Silna because of the bird’s way of life(living in packs/colonies, non-migratory nature, etc.) Originally, i wanted to choose the atlantic puffin but then i saw the little auk and knew it was the one.

Finally, the Tundra bean goose for Goodsir because, i mean, Goodsir? More like Gooser.

There are more, but i think six is enough for one post.

Another round of watercolor bird studies, in preparation for a larger painting. These are all Arctic birds that can be found at/near the North Pole...so you can probably guess the theme of the bigger illustration I'm prepping for ;) Fingers crossed that it will be finished in time for the winter holidays!

Petit Manan Lighthouse, Petit Manan Island, Steuben. Possibly my favorite lighthouse. In the summer, this island is home to hundreds of birds. Including Atlantic puffins, arctic, common and roseate terns, as well as black guillemots and many more. Decided I couldn't draw them all, but here's a couple attempts to try and capture the island's vibes. Can you spot the oystercatchers? MERCH

Have you ever seen the Spectacled Eider (Somateria fischeri)? During breeding season, males sport green plumage in a pattern that's reminiscent of glasses. While this doesn't make their vision sharper, it does help males stand out from the crowd.For the rest of the year, they revert to mottled-brown plumage, similar to females, which have more subdued spectacles year-round. This duck is unique in that it lives in the frigid high Arctic. It sustains itself on a diet of mostly mollusks and crustaceans, diving to pluck prey from the ocean floor.
