Life Makeover | Character Creator Critique
[Previous Post] [First Post] [Next Post]
This is my first time covering a mobile game, sorry if the screenshots are a little blurry. I'm recording from a cheap tablet over USB.
Anyways, as always lets take a look at what this game's creator offers
(As you can see I've added a Navigation bar at the top, if you ONLY want to see my character creator critiques, navigate using that)
Anyway, "Life Makeover" is a F2P story based 3D dress-up game,
At various points in the plot a change of outfit is called for to make someone feel better or to best fit an event.
And then there's a dress-up portion where you dress you avatar to best fit the theme.
We'll try that at the end, but let's first take a look at the character creator.
I've already played this game a bit, so I may have extra hairstyles and outfits, but I got all of this playing story mode/events, and you can edit your character at any time after the prologue. (and make presets)
So Let's make a new avatar!
While the game offers presets and a randomizer, you can also opt to start with community designed characters!
This is a great option that I wish more games had, you can use a design you like as a base, and even upload your own variants:
But for today, we're just going to make a character naturally.
The first option is for selecting your body type:
The only options are Woman (Left) and Girl (right)
(Both Body types have separate presets: Top-Woman Bottom-Girl)
This seems to adjust the proportions a little, but it's hard to tell the differences. I think shifting the starting stance/posture a little would have helped emphasize the difference in maturity.
(But that won't really affect how you design, but I feel it fits into the ideal of 'image')
I decided to go with the slightly more adult 'women' type,
Here's a look at some of the presets:
There are 12 presets, that cover a decent range of styles, as well as body shapes, heights and skin tones.
To keep things Simple. I'll be trying to re-create my style savvy avatar,
So here's the preset I ended up going with:
It may seem like I picked this purely for the eye color match,
But actually I think the face as a level of intensity that the other presets lacked, It looks like a good template for Cid's 'Bold' aesthetic.
Next up in 'Overall' is 'face shape':
there are 17 options here, And they seem to be mostly just face presets, so they'll change your eye color, makeup, ear size and a tons of other stuff. So I'd recommend leaving this alone if you already like your look. (but there is a 'back' button if needed)
The next option in 'overall' is 'skin color':
I believe there are about 40 of these, no fantasy colors, but a very good range of skin tones are represented, along with a gloss slider.
Next up is 'Body type':
Only 6 options here, it may be hard to tell from the gif,
But it adjusts your character's body proportions.
This is not really something I feel compostable going into detail on, So I'll just say, it's more variety than most fashion games, but there's room for improvement.
Okay, we're finally out of the 'overall' section, now on to 'makeup'
15 options here, with 12 colors and an opacity slider.
I think there's a number range of options here as well, however it feels like the style tend to lean a bit towards the more 'serious' or 'neutral side', so if you're not a fan of the Stoic supermodel look, and wanted something a bit more happy and inviting you may feel left out.
Also, a few more color options would have been nice.
Next up is 'contacts':
This seems to be an all-in-one section for editing eye designs.
we have 18 patterns (including, realistic, fantasy, and stylized)
With something like 58 iris color options!
And this is another one of the areas where I usually get stuck,
It's a little overwhelming to have these may options, and picking the right style can make/break your look.
But I think the ones above are 'standard' enough to blend in to various looks, not too realistic, but also not too 'cartoony' or stylized.
Next up is eyeliner:
(Had to pull up the hair for this one)
A bit disappointed with the limited selection here,
Not really sure what else I'd ask for, pattern wise, but the colors feel especially spare.
Next up is eyeshadow:
We have 15 patterns here, most featuring two color channels,
and 19 colors, and an opacity slider, Really could have used a few more color options, or atleast a contrast slider or something.
(like no purple? c'mon?)
Aright, lipstick is up next:
Now this is where things gets interesting!
you start with 16 fairly standard patterns, 50 colors...
And when you go to select your color, you'll have a texture option, and that's just the primer.
You'll have a separate option for the overlay with it's own dedicated color selection, texture, and an option ti diffuse the two layers!
It's very neat!
Eye Lashes are next:
Only 8 options, no advanced settings,
But it offers a decent selection of lengths and 'fullness'
Next up is Blush:
And this is another one of those things I REALLY think I just need to look up, if I'm going to continue this series...
Like what is the goal with blush, how does it work, what makes something look good? Best I can do is try to not make the changes stand out too much, I guess.
Anyways, with that embarrassment out of the way, let's move on.
Final makeup section, "Facial Paint:"
This one is also fairly spare, 12 options, without much adjustment,
for example, you can't adjust the freckle color, just blending.
And there are some basic face tattoos, but you can't change the colors.
Next is 'Face' section:
This is where you may want to decide how much you want to dig into tweaking your sliders, they offer 'basic' (left) and advanced (right).
The option you pick will decide how many submenu's you'll have to work with and the number of sliders in each.
I'm staying in 'Basic', advanced games me tons of options I've never even heard of.
Alright eyebrows are next:
You can adjust different points as well as the angle here,
so I guess this kinda makes up for the lack of presets.
Eyelashes follows:
The only real option is 'curling' Since you already set the length and volume, you can opt to adjust how much they curl here.
Nose next:
Again, I never know what to do here, what makes a good nose?
I could really use some presets for this section, But I guess 'overall'
should be fine for those who want to make quick changes.
Mouth is next:
The maximum adjustments for a lot of these seem pretty subtle,
For this, the maximum upwards adjustment for lip angle,
I'm not expecting the neutral face to be a big goofy smile, but it just feels a little limiting.
Last up for face is Ears:
No real advanced setting to speak of, but the 'sharpness' slider goes real high, you can pretty much give your character elf ears.
Now for the final Section, "Body Customization":
Even the 'overall' section offers significantly more variety than the presets.
Then you have a few dedicated sections.
'Shoulders':
For adjusting both the neck and shoulder dimensions.
Arms:
For adjusting the arms and hand (listed as palm) sizing.
Chest:
With both overall control and 'Custom shaping?'
Waist:
And lastly Legs:
....And we're all done!
I don't have many outfit pieces, but I like how this turned out:
I've uploaded them to the community, DataID: CHJWWHKOIIAAA
------
Alright, so final thoughts!
I had a lot of fun playing around with this character creator!
Those some of the presets were lacking, they offer a great degree of customization in a lot of areas, I especially enjoyed that they offered an 'overall' setting first to make farther reaches changes to specific areas, and the 'basic' mode that simplifies down subcategories and DEFINITELY something other games (like inZoi) could learn from.
Much like Style Savvy: Styling Star, it does lock you to their chosen art style a bit, but it still offers a good amount of freedom in how your avatar presents themselves in that style, so you're not just locked to the 'glass-eyes doll' styling, But you can't go full anime inspired or realistic, all designed will be stylized to fit in their world.
Would I recommend people actually play this game? I don't know,
I have not played it long enough to see how grindy or p2w it can get,
But I do know it has a really interesting character creator! And some REALLY fancy outfits!

But anyways, thanks for reading!
I can't belive you made it to the end!
I spend like 4 hours making this, it's hard to belive anyone found it interesting enough to make it this far,
since you did, any feedback would be appreciated! (positive or negative)
Thanks for reading!
