On April 5th 1902 disaster struck at Ibrox Stadium when part of the flooring collapsed, killing 26 and injuring over 500 others.
This was the first international match between the two teams where all the players were paid professionals, it would be remember though for the tragic loss of life.
On the afternoon of 5th April 1902 a bumper crowd gathered at the then newly-built Ibrox Park in Glasgow to witness the Scotland national team face the ‘Auld Enemy’ for only the 31st time in their history. Sadly, 26 wouldn’t be going home.
The game had not long kicked off when shortly after 4PM a large section to the rear of the West Tribune Stand - estimated to have been holding just under half of the 70,000-strong crowd that day - collapsed, sending a tangled mass of humanity tumbling 45 feet through broken boards. The match was temporarily halted to allow the treatment of those injured, but play soon continued, the two teams battling it out for a 1-1 draw.
The final death toll was recorded as 26 with a further 587 injured. It was reported by The Scotsman at the time that rescuing the victims was a “work of great difficulty”.
Doubts regarding the quality of the construction materials as chosen by the renowned Archibald Leitch led to the manufacturers being prosecuted for culpable homicide. The case was unsuccessful, though the disaster put an abrupt end to the future use of wooden terraces. The reputation of Archibald Leitch survived relatively unscathed and a fund-raiser was set up to compensate those who had lost loved ones.
A replay was hastily organised and played a month later at Villa Park in Birmingham with all proceeds from the match being donated to a relief fund for victims of the disaster.
The disaster led to an overhaul in stadium design with wooden terraced stands being largely replaced by earth or concrete embankments.

"Close your eyes and imagine the scene. Can you see that? Thousands of people, cheering. There's blue colors everywhere, and the stadium smells of moisture in the air, and fried sausages." Gentle, slender fingers touched Mikel's shoulders, and he instinctively straightened his back. "You can taste the beer you spend five pounds on. It's cold but you're wearing a jacket, and a scarf that keeps your neck warm. And you're excited because it's a bright day, it might have rained in the morning but now the air is clean and fresh, and the pitch looks greener than last week. There's still droplets of rain on the iron latticework over the stands. You watch it and remember Archibald Leitch and what you read about him and his work. There's so many stories stored in this one space, and it's the people that make it alive. Without them, it would not matter at all." The hands let go off him, and Mikel opened his eyes. The scenery, just as Unai described described it, bar the thousands of people and the smell of sausages, was in front of him, He turned to Unai, whose hair, untouched by hairgel today, was ruffled by the wind. "It would be just a building," he finished, his eyes shining with passion. For the first time, Mikel thought he looked beautiful.

Fulham football ground – Craven Cottage When my son was younger, we had a season ticket. It was cheaper than other premiership clubs and meant we could see most of the premier clubs. The walk from Putney through Bishops Park, known as the Green Mile, was one of the great joys of going to games at the stadium. Maybe that’s why Fulham is always so calm. The home of Fulham F. C. since 1896, situated in Bishops Park and on Stevenage Road. The ground’s name, Craven Cottage, dates back to the original cottage on this site from 1780 built by William Craven, sixth Baron of Craven. The surrounding grounds were hunting woods once owned by Anne Boleyn. The cottage burned down in 1888, and the site was abandoned. The current stadium has been altered many times. In 1904, according to a design by architect Archibald Leitch, the main stadium, with the red-brick Stevenage road elevation, was built. The new Riverside stand appears complete, but I confess I have not been.

Ibrox Stadium is a football (soccer) ground in which British city?
Located in Glasgow, Scotland, Ibrox Stadium is home to Rangers Football Club. Ibrox Stadium, often referred to as the "Ibrox Park," was officially opened on December 30, 1899. It was built to replace the original Ibrox Park, which had been the home ground of Rangers since 1887. Designed by Archibald Leitch, the stadium initially had a capacity of 40,000 spectators. Over the years, Ibrox has undergone several renovations and expansions, increasing its capacity to its 50,817 seats.
Ibrox Stadium has witnessed numerous historic moments in Scottish football. Rangers, one of the most successful clubs in the country, has won several league titles, Scottish Cups, and Scottish League Cups while playing at Ibrox. The stadium has also hosted several international matches, including Scotland's national team fixtures.
In 1902, a wooden stand collapsed during a match, resulting in the death of 25 spectators. Another tragedy occurred in 1971 when a stairway crush claimed the lives of 66 fans. Despite these tragedies, Ibrox Stadium remains a symbol of resilience and unity. The Rangers fans, known as the "Blue Sea of Ibrox," are renowned for their unwavering support and passionate atmosphere.
Beyond football, Ibrox Stadium has also hosted various non-sporting events, including concerts and charity matches. Artists such as Bon Jovi, U2, and Oasis have performed to thousands of fans within the grounds.

Evertonin uuden kauden pelipaidat
Hummel ja Valioliiga Everton julkaisivat yhdessä uuden pelipaidat kaudelle 2023-24. Uusi jalkapallo pelipaidat osoittaa kunnioitusta Goodison Parkin rakastetuille perinteisille elementeille ja esittelee sen yhdessä Hummel-brändin edustavimmista tyyleistä.
Ensimmäistä kertaa kymmeneen Evertonin kotipakkauksessa on kaulus, jossa on nyökkäys Goodison Parkin kuuluisalle Archibald Leitch -grafiikalle. Everton FC:n päästadionin piirre vuodesta 1909 lähtien, ja sama ikoninen kuvio näkyy myös hihansuissa. Kaulus on myös kunnianosoitus Tanskan maajoukkueen klassiselle kotipaidalle, jonka satu kirjoitettiin Euroopan Cupissa vuonna 1992, ja se on osa Hummel-brändin 100-vuotisjuhlasarjan suunnittelun inspiraatiota. Kotimaalivahti Everton pelipaita kirkon kaariikkunakuvio on koristeltu vihreän paidan etupuolella.

£500m Everton stadium cleared for construction
Laing O’Rourke has got the all-clear to start construction of Everton’s 53,000-capacity stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock after communities minister Robert Jenrick said the ambitious plans on the heritage waterfront will not be called-in.
The government had asked for more time to make a decision on the scheme after Liverpool council voted to approve plans last month.
As preferred contractor, Laing O’Rourke has been working up a detailed design and delivery programme, employing digital engineering expertise and modern methods of construction.
Tumblr media
The three-year programme of work is now expected to get underway early this summer, with a view to moving in ahead of the 2024-25 season.
The stunning brick, steel and glass stadium design takes its inspiration from the historic maritime and warehouse buildings nearby.
Tumblr media
Designed by MEIS architects, the stadium structure combines the historic and modern, with the brick base incorporating a subtle nod to Goodison Park’s famous Archibald Leitch lattice work, while the roof structure is made from steel and glass for a modern finish.
The project will be overseen by Everton Stadium Development Director Colin Chong who joined the club from Laing O’Rourke in 2016.

Legends like Dixie and Elisha brought back to life in glorious technicolour
Legends from football’s monochrome years are being brought gloriously back to life by a Wigan Athletic supporting grandad! George Chilvers, born and raised in Liverpool in the 1950s, colourises old black and white images. And his work brings footballers previously only seen in sepia vividly back to life. Will grand old Goodison Park host Merseyside's return to action? | Paul Wilson
A Safety Advisory Group will meet on Monday to decide whether Everton can meet Liverpool in what would be one of the last derbies to be staged in their home of the last 128 years
It is hard to believe now, even harder when you are shoehorned into one of the most cramped and restrictive press boxes in England, but Goodison Park was a World Cup stadium once.
That was in 1966, obviously, and on many occasions it has been remarked that to all intents and purposes the ground has hardly changed since. If physical distancing is now to arrive in the media areas it will certainly not be before time. Yet people are fond of Goodison, it will be missed when Everton move out to their shiny new home by the docks. It is not just the Archibald Leitch architecture, the boxy stands or the pub across the road where Bill Kenwright has a habit of fraternising with his public after famous victories, it is the way the place sits, like Arsenal’s Highbury used to, in the middle of a community. “Turn a corner and there’s a football ground,” as Arséne Wenger said when introduced to the odd concept (for a Frenchman) of a stadium surrounded on all sides by housing.
