Papon and the Bollywood Connection: A Playback Powerhouse
Angaraag Mahanta, better known as Papon, is one of India’s most celebrated musicians. Hailing from Assam, Papon’s music is a soulful amalgamation of his cultural heritage and contemporary influences. Over the years, he has made a significant mark in Bollywood while remaining deeply rooted in his Assamese origins. This article explores Papon’s extraordinary journey, from his early days in Assam to becoming a household name in Indian music.
A Melodic Beginning in Assam
Born on November 24, 1975, in Nagaon, Assam, Papon grew up surrounded by music. His parents, Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta, were iconic figures in Assamese folk music, often referred to as the “King and Queen of Assamese Folk.” Their influence was instrumental in shaping Papon’s musical sensibilities. From an early age, he was exposed to traditional folk tunes, bhajans, and classical compositions, which laid the foundation for his eclectic taste in music.
Papon’s initial training came from his parents, who instilled in him a deep appreciation for melody and rhythm. However, he did not restrict himself to one genre. Growing up, he explored diverse musical styles, which later helped him craft a unique sound that blends traditional and modern elements seamlessly.
Stepping into Bollywood
Papon’s Bollywood journey began with the song “Om Mantra” from the 2006 film Strings — Bound by Faith. While this marked his entry into the Hindi film industry, it wasn’t until 2011 that he gained widespread recognition with “Jiyein Kyun” from the movie Dum Maaro Dum. This hauntingly beautiful song showcased his emotive voice and established him as a singer to watch out for.
Subsequent hits such as “Moh Moh Ke Dhaage” (Dum Laga Ke Haisha), “Bulleya” (Sultan), and “Kaun Mera” (Special 26) further solidified his position in Bollywood. His ability to convey deep emotion through his singing struck a chord with audiences across the country. Whether it was romantic ballads, soulful melodies, or experimental tracks, Papon’s versatility made him a favorite among music directors.
Exploring Beyond Bollywood
While Bollywood brought him fame, Papon’s artistry extends far beyond film music. In 2007, he founded Papon and The East India Company, a folk-fusion band that blends traditional Assamese music with contemporary genres such as electronic, rock, and jazz. The band’s unique sound has resonated with audiences globally, earning accolades at music festivals in India and abroad.
Through this platform, Papon has brought Assamese music to the global stage, reimagining folk classics and introducing them to new audiences. Songs like “Boitha Maro” and “Bhaar Hobo Moi” are prime examples of his ability to infuse modern energy into traditional tunes without losing their essence.
Multilingual Mastery
One of Papon’s most remarkable qualities is his multilingual prowess. Fluent in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and more, Papon has performed in various languages, reflecting the linguistic diversity of India. This adaptability has allowed him to connect with audiences across regions, making his music universally appealing.
His Assamese tracks, including “Mukoli Bihu” and “Zubeen Zubeen”, remain beloved by regional fans, while his Hindi and Bengali songs have garnered national and international acclaim. Papon’s ability to seamlessly transition between languages and genres is a testament to his versatility as an artist.
Accolades and Recognition
Papon’s contributions to music have not gone unnoticed. His rendition of “Moh Moh Ke Dhaage” earned him several awards, including a Filmfare Award nomination. In addition to his Bollywood accolades, he has received numerous honors for his regional music and independent projects.
Despite his success, Papon remains grounded, often attributing his achievements to his Assamese roots. His humility and dedication to preserving his cultural heritage make him a role model for aspiring artists.
Challenges and Triumphs
Like any artist, Papon has faced his share of challenges. Balancing his Bollywood career with his passion for Assamese folk music has been no small feat. Additionally, the pressure to conform to mainstream expectations while staying true to his artistic vision is an ongoing struggle.
Yet, Papon has navigated these challenges with grace. His unwavering commitment to authenticity has earned him the respect of his peers and fans alike. By staying true to his roots while embracing change, Papon has carved a niche for himself in the competitive world of music.
A Legacy in the Making
Today, Papon is not just a singer but a cultural ambassador. Through his music, he has bridged the gap between tradition and modernity, introducing Assamese culture to the world while contributing to India’s rich musical tapestry. His journey from a small town in Assam to the glitz and glamour of Bollywood is a testament to his talent, hard work, and passion.
As he continues to create music, Papon remains a beacon of hope for aspiring musicians from regional backgrounds. His story proves that with dedication and perseverance, it is possible to achieve greatness while staying true to one’s roots.
Conclusion
Papon musical journey is a tale of dreams, resilience, and cultural pride. From the verdant landscapes of Assam to the bustling streets of Mumbai, his path is an inspiration for artists everywhere. With his soulful voice, innovative compositions, and deep respect for tradition, Papon has earned his place as one of India’s most cherished musicians.

Papon's Pays Tribute to the Brahmaputra River
Assam, which is one of the biggest states in the north-eastern part of India has an undying spirit- be it heavy rainfall or the floods that follow- the people of Assam never let any such barriers come in their way when it comes to celebrating their culture, which happens to be their pride. One such example was when the state had recently faced extremely heavy rainfall but even that couldn’t dampen the people’s spirit of celebrating the ‘Namami Brahmaputra River Festival’ which is the biggest river festival of India.
In 2017, the well-known Assamese and Bollywood singer- Papon composed an anthem for the debut edition of Namami Brahmaputra- which is also being touted as the best song ever made for a river festival. The song has been sung by a number of celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Vishal-Shekhar and Arijit Singh. Papon had also invited Amitabh Ji to visit Assam. In a tweet, he wrote," Humbled by your gestures my lovely music fraternity and Amitabh Ji. Please come to Assam soon. Forever grateful!" The five-day long festival celebrates Assam’s rich culture, art, and heritage. ‘Namami Brahmaputra’ was released by Assam’s chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Guwahati that year itself.
Papon, who has made a place for himself in Bollywood with his heart-touching tracks such as ‘Kyun’, ‘Jiyein Kyun’, ‘Kaun Mera’ and ‘Zindagi Aisi Waisi’, in an interview, said that he specifically wanted the song to have a quintessential flavour of Assam. He said in a statement,” Like the mighty and grand Brahmaputra, I wanted the song to reflect those qualities. Consciously, I also wanted to showcase the Vaishnavite classical music system and used ‘bol’ using the khol (drum-like instrument made of terracotta, usually played to accompany devotional music)”.
More interestingly, it was Papon’s idea to involve Bollywood celebrities in the initiative. He said that the Government of Assam had asked him to compose the theme song for the festival that celebrates the Brahmaputra and since the very objective of the festival was to showcase Assam, he felt that if the song was sung by singers from all over the country, it would have a far wider reach. Papon later also made an Assamese version of the river song in which he worked with a generation of singers right from his own mother Archana Mahanta to Rupam Bhuyam who was the youngest singer of the lot.
Papon's love for Assam and his people has been reflected in his compositions time and again. Even today, after receiving an immense amount of success and appreciation for his work in Bollywood, he hasn't left Assam. He makes it a point that he performs in Assam at least once a month along with his band, or simply visits his hometown there. His simplicity and love for his region is truly breath-taking. We surely need to learn a thing or two from him!

Papon’s Notable Contribution in Making Folk Popular
Singer, songwriter and composer Angaraag Mahanta, popularly known as ‘Papon', faced a major challenge while growing up in his hometown, Guwahati- emerging from the shadow of his renowned Assamese folk singer parents: Khagen and Archana Mahanta. His father is also known as ‘Bihu Samrat’ or the ‘King of Bihu’ which is a genre of folk music native to Upper Assam.
Throughout his days in Assam growing up, Papon faced two extreme reactions- some people would say,” Of course he is going to be a singer. Look at the kind of backing he has” while others would say,” He has no choice but to live up to his parents’ standards.” But these pressures only seem to have helped Papon rise and reach the level he is at today.
Papon is a modern folk singer with a soulfully rich voice who could do complete justice to the depth of old songs and yet make them contemporary enough for a Bollywood crazy concert crowd. He is a singer who has gotten traditional folk music the recognition it deserves again as well as the English-speaking urbane people sing along to Bihu folk.
In 2004, he first took the northeast by storm with his Assamese album Junaki Raati. A few years down the line, he started gaining wider popularity in India’s independent music scene, when he began playing with his band- The East India Company. Meanwhile, between 2004 and 2011, he released five Assamese albums, all of which received huge commercial success and glowing reviews across different platforms.
Today, Papon plays all over India and abroad but his core base still lies in the northeast, where he manages to attract exceptionally huge crowds, something that very few of his indie counterparts can do. But as an English honours student at Delhi University, he was just another long-haired boy from the northeast. In a recent interview he said to the journalist laughingly,” I’d be floating around with my guitar and riding my Yamaha RX-100”. By the time he was 22, he’d started learning how to program and produce his own music. He spent the next 13 years in Delhi, making music and touring before finally shifting base to Mumbai in 2011.
Papon’s well-wishers back home urged him to follow in his father’s footsteps and take Bihu music further, but by then he had forged his own identity and sound: an intriguing blend of northeast folk music, rock and electronic and blues in which Assamese instruments such as the khol, a percussive instrument, and the dutora, a two-stringed instrument, male frequent appearances.
He has given Assam and India many popular songs and though it gets difficult for artists to manage two things at a time, Papon has managed to balance things out pretty well. He has made folk a popular genre amongst the youth today and will continue doing so for many more years to come.
