Fun Fact about Hispanic monarchies:
Question:
Have there ever been, or are there still, any Hispanic monarchies in existence besides the Spanish monarchy?
ChatGPT Answer:
There are no other Hispanic monarchies currently in existence besides the Spanish monarchy. The Spanish royal family, headed by King Felipe VI, is the only remaining monarchy in the Spanish-speaking world.
Historically, there were other monarchies in the Hispanic world, such as:
The Mexican Empire: Mexico had two brief periods of monarchy. The First Mexican Empire (1821-1823) was led by Emperor Agustín I, and the Second Mexican Empire (1864-1867) was led by Emperor Maximilian I, who was installed by French forces. Both empires were short-lived, and Mexico eventually became a republic.
The Incan Empire: Prior to Spanish colonization, the Incan Empire ruled over a large portion of South America, including parts of modern-day Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile. The Inca rulers, however, were not monarchs in the European sense but rather emperors of a native civilization.
In modern times, no other country in Latin America or the Hispanic world maintains a royal family or monarchy. Most nations in Latin America transitioned to republics following independence from Spain.
Continued...
Yes, in addition to the Spanish monarchy and the two Mexican empires, there are a few other historical examples of Hispanic monarchies or proposed monarchies that existed in memory, including:
The Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia: In the southern part of modern-day Argentina and Chile, French lawyer Orélie-Antoine de Tounens declared himself King of Araucania and Patagonia in 1860, with the support of the indigenous Mapuche people. Although the kingdom was never internationally recognized and quickly collapsed, it remains a symbolic, non-territorial monarchy to this day.
The Carlist Monarchies in Spain: In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Carlist movements sought to establish alternative branches of the Spanish royal family as legitimate monarchs, particularly in regions such as Navarra and parts of the Basque Country. These movements were rooted in a more conservative, traditional approach to the Spanish crown, but they never succeeded in gaining power.
Proposed Monarchy in Ecuador: During the early years of Ecuador's independence, there were discussions about establishing a monarchy by offering the crown to a European prince. However, the proposal never came to fruition, and Ecuador remained a republic.
These examples show that while most Hispanic countries either remained republics or quickly transitioned to them, there were occasional flirtations with monarchies, either by local leaders or foreign powers. However, none of these monarchies persisted.
These examples show that while monarchies were proposed or attempted in some parts of the Hispanic world, most of these efforts were short-lived or unsuccessful.

Adiós a Raúl Abel Risso
Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia Flag w/ coat of arms
from /r/vexillology Top comment: [The Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Araucan%C3%ADa_and_Patagonia) was declared in South America by a French adventurer named Orélie-Antoine de Tounens in 1860. Tounens was supported in his declaration of independence of the two regions by some of the Mapuche chiefs in the area, who wanted to break away from Chile and Argentina. The kingdom existed for two years before Tounens was arrested, imprisoned, and eventually deported by the Chilean government. He tried to return three times to reclaim his kingdom, but never succeeded. Wikipedia has two different versions of the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia flag. The other is a tricolor without the coat of arms, and the shades of blue and green are much brighter. There's no explanation for the difference. Maybe the exact shade of blue and green are lost to history. I thought this was the nicer looking flag though. !wave

“Representatives of South America’s indigenous Mapuche people have petitioned the international criminal court (ICC) to take action against the governments of Chile and Argentina for acts of genocide and crimes against humanity.
Lonko Juana Calfunao, who led the delegation to The Hague on Thursday said that since their formations, both countries had committed crimes including genocide and torture against their indigenous populations.
“In the so-called Pacification of Araucania, the Chilean army with the complicity of the Catholic church, invaded our territory, burned our [homes], killing our people and drowning babies in the rivers,” Calfunao told the Guardian. “Even today … we are hostages of states that don’t recognize our Mapuche nationality.”
The legal battle has a curious origin and backer: the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia, the surviving government in exile of an ephemeral 19th-century state.
In February, the ICC received a letter headed with the kingdom’s coat of arms accusing Chile and Argentina of historical and contemporary crimes.
Its author, Frédéric Luz, 55, is a Frenchman who has, since March last year, held the title of prince of Araucania and Patagonia – the seventh since Orllie de Tounens, a French lawyer, was proclaimed sovereign by Mapuche chiefs in 1860.
Calfunao said that her Mapuche ancestors accepted De Tounens as part of a strategy to protect themselves from Chilean invasion. At the time, Chilean forces were massing north of the Río Biobío, which separated them from the indigenous-controlled territory to the south. Under the “doctrine of discovery”, colonial powers were forbidden from subjugating indigenous populations ruled by a Catholic monarch.
However, De Tounens was captured in 1862 and the subsequent invasion of Mapuche lands by Argentinian and Chilean forces was devastating. Over the last decade, repressive state measures and Mapuche grassroots resistance have intensified in tandem.
Under President Sebastian Piñera, the Chilean government has increased military presence in the south of the country and in November 2018 an unarmed Mapuche, Camilo Catrillanca, was killed by an army counter-insurgency unit which was pursuing car thieves, prompting a string of street protests.
The intensification of the Mapuche conflict in recent years has given a new purpose to the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia, long considered an absurdity by French society. Luz is learning Spanish and hopes to visit Chile shortly to meet with indigenous groups.
“We’re a serious organization, not a micro-nation of fantasists,” he says. “My only objective is to fight for the recognition of Mapuche culture, language and religion and one day, who knows, an autonomous Mapuche state.
About 1.5 million Mapuches live in Chile, and 200,000 in Argentina.”
