What to Offer to Lalla Malika? 💜👑🕯️💎🌹💜

Food
💜 Beverages like Moroccan mint tea, coffee, juice, fine wine and brandy, and Malika drink, a special drink that consists of milk, dried fruit, sugar, orange blossom water and rose water. Like every jnun, Malika also accepts milk as an offering. One brand of milk, Jaouda, is commonly seen on offerings tables due to its purple packaging.
💜 Bowls of fresh fruit (which may be whole or may be cut artfully).
💜 Dried fruits and nuts (the tradition is to offer seven different types. For example, dates, dried figs, apricots, raisins, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, and pistachios). Her fruit and nuts mixes are described as being similar to the fakya mix served on the Islamic festival of Ashura, and may be enrichened by including some of the sweets mentioned below.
💜 Candies. Sugared almonds, gum, chocolates (especially fancy chocolates or chocolate in purple packaging), nougat, and candied fruits are commonly given. It is customary for wrapped sweets to be scattered amongst the attendees.
💜 Moroccan cookies and desserts, such as makrout, ghoriba, kaab el ghazal, briwats, sellou, jawhara, and chebakia. And French patisserie treats like macarons and millefeuilles.
💜 Cakes (some people place Malika themed cakes on their offering tables, which are cakes with purple icing that have her name written on them, often but not always with a tiara decoration on top. But any cake will suffice).
💜 Sugar. Usually this would be in a large, conical container (mida) holding a two-kilogram loaf of sugar, which symbolizes sweetness and joy. This is traditionally associated with festive occasions in Morocco.
💜 Boiled eggs, although mainly associated with Lalla Mira, aren't uncommon to see offered to Lalla Malika. They may occasionally be dyed purple or green.
💜 Orange blossom and rosewater
💜 Although she's mostly associated with sweet things, savoury food is also offered. Roast chicken and slada (Moroccan salad) is usually served to guests at ritual ceremonies. Any food prepared for her ceremony must be made from high quality ingredients and prepared perfectly.
💜 The meal is divided into small portions and served alongside the special Malika drink by the host of the ritual or her assistants (family members or friends) to everyone present at the ceremony. The food and drink are consumed together by the attendees and Lalla Malika as an act of unity and alliance with her, as well as an offering to the spirit in exchange for her baraka (blessing).
Beauty
💜 Perfume perfume perfume! She absolutely loves it. Fine cologne is best, but any perfume is fine. She's especially associated with oud, sandalwood and musk scents. Scents that are generally popular in Morocco are also common offerings (I've noticed Ameerat Al Arab, a sweet jasmine scent, is commonly offered). Her followers also like offering perfumes in purple bottles as purple is strongly associated with her. Body mists, essential oils and attars are also offered sometimes.
💜 Henna. Malika is one of the jnun who can command her followers to get henna, and ritual henna in her honour is very common. She's particularly associated with the Fassi style, and with intricate floral designs. More detail here.
💜 Jewellery. She's associated with gold jewellery, tiaras and a purple-stoned ring, but all jewellery is good as long as it's beautiful.
💜 If offering the purple ring, it must be purified in a specific way first, before being placed on a plate which has oud pieces and flowers on it and left to settle overnight.
💜 Jewellery boxes. In folklore, Malika uses small, purple velvet boxes to store her jewellery in. Trinket boxes are offered too.
💜 Makeup. She loves cosmetics, and it's one of the most common offerings. As well as makeup itself, people also offer makeup brushes and beauty blenders.
💜 Small mirrors. Especially Moroccan style mirrors.
💜 Hairbrushes and combs
💜 Hair accessories, like embellished hairpins, headbands and tiaras. A tiara with diamonds or rubies, and a purple or white veil of transparent lace are accessories particularly associated with her, as according to mythology she wears them.
💜 Shower products, like sabon beldi, ghassoul clay, tbrima, body butter, etc
💜 Skincare products, like creams, mists and sprays
💜 Siwak, a bundle of dried walnut bark strips rolled up around a rosewood branch which has been used as a natural toothpaste and tooth whitener in Morocco since antiquity is commonly given, often with purple ribbon wrapped around it.

💜 Gnawa music, especially songs in honour of her
💜 Candles. Purple candles are especially common but pink and white are used a lot too. Three candles in a candle holder should be lit during the henna ceremony.
💜 Malika Candle: There's a specific, special candle called the Candle of Lalla Malika. On Thursday, at night, you must take a pure white candle, wash it with rosewater and orange blossom water, then dress it with jawi (a type of resin), camphor, lavender, and mastic.

💜 A bouquet of flowers (I read that pink roses are the best but flowers in general are used), scattered petals, or a bag of dried flowers and essential oils.

💜 This is not traditional at all, but a seer I follow says she likes Barbie-themed items, and I could absolutely imagine her enjoying a pretty signature Barbie doll.
💜 A long-necked sprinkler (mrsha) made of silver or glass, filled with orange blossom water or rose water, used to sprinkle guests or items for blessings.
💜 Amulets, most commonly gold khamsa charms.
💜 It's said that offerings to Malika are very similar to bridal gifts, so anything you'd gift to a bride is acceptable.
💜 You can also offer things that jnun like in general; however, unlike most jnun she dislikes blood so no animal sacrifices (unless you live in Meknes, where animal sacrifices are occasionally part of the preparation for her taifūr, although one must undergo a purification ritual after sacrificing a chicken to her before joining the celebration). Salty foods should also be avoided as jnun have an aversion to salt (if you want to serve food with salt it's fine, just make a portion with no salt for Malika. She'll know which portion is for her and which is for people). Iron objects should be avoided as djinn flee from iron.
💜 Offerings for Lalla Malika must be new and in good condition.
💜 It's alright to enjoy offerings yourself, just let her enjoy them first. Her followers partake in eating food offered to her after leaving it for a while so that she can consume its essence first. Some offerings, like perfume and incense, are even used as part of the rites themselves. Small bags of the fakia mix are usually given out to attendees, and some people even use personalised bags to give out smaller offerings, like small candles and sweets.
💜 It's best to use pretty kitchenware to serve food from, like crystal wine glasses decorated with purple bows, golden platters, and colourful tea glasses.
💜 Remember that what people say about Lalla Malika is that the more you give to her, the more you receive in return. Thus, the more the one possesses class, elegance, beauty, and wealth—and the more jewelry, ornaments, and feminine accessories one has and places on the altars—the more class, elegance, beauty, and wealth Malika returns to you. This grants one increased power, which generates further wealth and gives one an even more radiant image. Even if you start with very little, Malika will give you more if you keep her in offerings.
💜 What if one can't afford luxury products? Well, you can still make offerings to her. Lalla Malika, unlike some jnun invoked for monetary gain, accepts people who begin with very little. But it's important to not offer her counterfeit luxury products, as she doesn't tolerate fakes and imitations, seeing them as attempts to deceive her. It's better to buy cheap (but good) products instead. For example, a €40 perfume from Lattafa is a much better offering than a counterfeit Dior perfume.
Where to put offerings?
💜 Traditionally people set up shrines to Malika on a shelf of their wardrobes, as she's believed to inhabit wardrobes and armoires.
💜 During parties in her honour, her devotees place a purple (or sometimes green, or more rarely light blue/turquoise) embroidered cloth on a table, on which they set out their offerings. There may be two different tables, one for offerings of food and another for beauty products, clothes and jewellery.

💜 A whole room if you have space, done up with purple decor (if you are a man who receives conjugal visits from Malika, ideally you should have a separate room or space that can serve as an altar of love, decorated to her taste).
💜 Tboq: This is a handwoven basket made from palm leaves with slightly raised edges; the inside is lined with violet fabric. It is decorated with jewelry, shells, and pearls. Its function is to hold the different types of incense needed for invoking Lalla Malika, particularly aloe wood (ʿūd l-qumari), as well as other emblematic objects of the spirit: a ring, gold jewelry, a Muslim rosary, and red Marlboro cigarettes.
💜 Mida: This is a large decorative cone, consisting of a large circular plate (sometimes square) made of wood, with raised edges and topped with a conical wicker cover. The base and cover of Lalla Malika’s mida, like the ṭboq, are fully lined—inside and out—with dark violet fabric. Along the edges and seams, golden or silver strips of fabric are applied, as well as decorations made of beads, shells, and similar embellishments. The contents of the mida vary depending on the occasion. During the ṭaifūr, the mida contains fabrics, incense, perfumes, and some accessories for henna decoration. However, when the mida is stored in the room housing the muqaddama’s (officiant's) altars, it holds the ṭboq along with perfumes, one or more sprinklers of orange blossom water, and small boxes containing incense, jewelry, and money provided by women who seek the muqaddama’s services to organize a ṭaifūr.
💜 Two simple metal trays, which have no lids and may be square or round, are used exclusively by musicians. The first tray supports a brazier. The musicians ensure the fire is constantly tended by adding coals and incense. The heat produced by the burning coals is used to warm the drum skins during musical performances. The second tray holds one or more boxes of incense, as well as sugar cubes, a sprinkler with orange blossom water, and perfumes. As the ritual progresses, this second tray is used to place gifts intended for the musicians: milk and dates as a welcome offering and money from the audience for their musical performance.
💜 Small offerings should be presented on a tray, which must have an offer of food, a piece of incense, a perfume and a ring.
💜 The night before a ceremonial party, one must prepare a tray which must have: chocolate and sweets, henna, dried fruits, perfume and gold. The tray must be kept overnight before being used during the ritual gathering.

The outfit: Inspired by Aladdin's outfit while disguised as Prince Ali, this outfit includes a sleeveless white robe with gold trim and shoulder pads with the robe including an indigo interior with henna patterns. The robe is layered over a white top with gold plating with violet circular gems and a pair of white pants with thin gold cuffs. The footwear consists of a pair of periwinkle curled with gold soles and trim as well as gold violet gem brooches.
Accessories: The accessories include a white headband with a violet gem brooch that includes leaf like designs in the shape of a crown and is attached to a violet feather. Other accessories include a pair of gold circular earrings with a violet circular gem on each side, a gold collar with a violet gem brooch, indigo arm warmers with gold cuffs and henna designs and an indigo wrap belt.

10 Aspects of Cheriyal Paintings

Have you heard about Cheriyal Paintings? If you are an Indian folk art aficionado, you might have; but most of us, unfortunately, do not know much about the art form. In this blog, let’s try learning ten aspects of this Cheriyal painting tradition.
What are Cheriyal Paintings? Cheriyal paintings are long narrative scroll paintings that serve as visual aids to a musical storytelling tradition. A conventional Cheriyal scroll is vertical and is divided into different frames, with each frame depicting a scene from the tale that is being presented. Since these scrolls are meant to be rolled when not in use, they are made with fabric. Traditionally, a khadi cloth is used as the base for these paintings.
Where do they come from? The name that the art form is known by today, i.e., Cheriyal, is derived from the town it is currently practised in. Cheriyal is a town in the Siddipet district of Telangana, India. The practice of the art form is much more limited than it was previously. Initially, these paintings were known as nakash or naqash, which translates to a drawing or a sketch.
Who are the people who are associated with these scrolls? In addition to the previous aspect, the people involved in the creation of these traditional nakash or Cheriyal paintings, are a community known as the Nakashis. Other than this community, there is another important group of individuals associated with this tradition. It is important to note that the actual purpose of these scrolls was to serve as visual aids when a storyteller narrated a particular folklore or mythological story in the form of a song. This community of balladeers is referred to as kaki padagollu. They travel from village to village narrating these stories.
How old is the Cheriyal painting tradition? As mentioned before, Cheriyal paintings were originally called nakash. Research suggests that these initial pieces were a little different from the ones created today, and are a result of cultural amalgamation. It is believed that the art form and technique of nakash came into the Indian subcontinent from Persia during the reign of the Mughals around the 16th century CE. Hence, making the Cheriyal painting tradition around 400 years old.
What themes do these paintings usually revolve around? The most prominent themes that are featured in Cheriyal paintings are the stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and also the Puranas. For example, below is an example of a Cheriyal painting depicting the stories from the life of the Hindu deity Krishna.
Other than these religious and mythological tales, these paintings also depict the social life, cultural practices, and festivities of the local communities. In the Cheriyal painting below, instances from day-to-day life in a rural setting are portrayed.
What are commonly noticed motifs and patterns in Cheriyal paintings? Since religious tales are a popular theme in these scrolls, Hindu religious iconography is one of the most visible motifs in this art form. Moreover, flora and fauna are commonly painted on these scrolls too. Other than these, brightly coloured borders - both, at the edges of the scroll and in between the frames - with floral patterns are one of the most identifiable features of Cheriyal paintings. A bright red background too is a given in almost all Cheriyal works.
What paints are used in these paintings? Like all traditional folk art forms, Cheriyal paintings too use only naturally sourced colours. Most of the pigments used in these paintings are mineral based, i.e., they are obtained from coloured stones. These stones are crushed into a fine powder and mixed with a natural binder and water. The natural binder used is gum arabic, locally called tirumani gond. This mixture is prepared with extreme attentiveness to make paint that is of the right saturation and has the ability to stick to the cloth base.
What tools are used by Cheriyal artists to make these paintings? Paintbrushes are the only tools which are used by Cheriyal artists to draw, paint, and add details to their artworks. Traditionally, these paintbrushes were made using squirrel hair because of how fine the artists could paint with them. However, today this practice has been replaced by market-available synthetic brushes.
New adaptations? New trends? With changing times, the popularity of Cheriyal scrolls and the accompanying musical narrative tradition faced a decline. To sustain themselves, these artists have adapted themselves to the changing needs and tastes. Today, the size of these scrolls has been minimised and the number of frames per painting has been decreased too. This is because these paintings are now used more as decorative pieces in households, rather than as storytelling aids.
Another innovation of the Cheriyral artists is also the minimising of the Cheriyal masks. Originally, these masks were worn by the storytellers to give their audiences a more vivid experience. But as mentioned before, the decline in the associated storytelling tradition led to a decline in the demand. Today, these mini Cheriyal masks serve as decorative items.
Some Cheriyal artists also experiment with newer subjects and depict contemporary issues.
