Aliens in Paradise

Guest post by the Apprentices in Ecological Nurturance, also known as The Aliens, who spent three months at the Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary from November 2019 to February 2020. 

Prologue

Nine months ago, a couple of dozen people gathered at the Centre for Learning school on the outskirts of Bangalore. It was to be a meeting between two groups. Half of them were there to offer a programme called the Apprenticeship in Ecological Nurturance. The other half had come to understand better what these people were offering. We were that latter group. 

But first, what exactly is the Apprenticeship in Ecological Nurturance? It’s a ten month long programme broadly spread across three different landscapes in Southern India. It involves learning from and working with the organisations that are striving to revive and conserve the natural ecosystems in each of these locations. Acquiring skills and applying them to care for the natural world. Understanding how ecological nurturance interacts with other related fields of action. And awakening a genuine sense of love for all living beings.

Eight individuals signed up to participate in this programme. We’re all of different ages, come from far flung places and have very varied histories. Already, we’ve gone on a six month long journey together. The first three months we spent in Thiruvannamalai at the Marudam Farm School. The last three we’ve spent at the Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary in Wayanad. And in a couple of days we will set off on our next big adventure – to the Nilgiris.

~ THE ALIENS

Introduction

An invitation brought to the Centre For Learning, near Bengaluru, a group of people passionate for driving a comprehensive environmental change. The opportunity was to deep dive into understanding  various aspects that constitute Ecological Nurturance.The program comprised spending 10 months across three diverse locations in Southern India- The Forest Way (Thiruvannamalai,TN), Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary( Wayanad, Kerela) and Upstream Ecology (Nilgiris, TN). The facilitating hosts are teams of like-minded naturalists and conservationists who have over two decades of field experience. Th eight apprentices finally embarking on this journey come from varied and diverse backgrounds in terms of place, age, education, experience and culture. The common thread joining the eight participants and the hosts is the genuine care and concern for the environment and the planet. The larger scope of this apprenticeship being building a sense of community, knowledge and experience sharing and hand-holding in extending similar such spaces.

The initial three months of this exploration was at Marudam Farm School (of The Forest Way) that set the foundation and building blocks for this incredible apprenticeship opportunity with - team building, physical fitness & an introduction to the beings of the forests – as the focus areas for the group.

The current three months at the Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary (Wayanad, Kerala) set pace for a far deeper understanding of the World (we live in) visa vis the ways of the forests & the beings there. This was facilitated by a camp setup, varied interactions with the gardeners (custodians of the incredible collection of ferns, orchids and many other plant species from across the Western Ghats), the local tribals (Paniyas & the Kurichiyas), forest walks, work in organic farms and thought provoking documentaries. Also facilitated were very interesting visits to naturalists & alternate educators near by.

We arrived to the comforting warmth of the host team comprising – Leelamma (heart & soul of the sanctuary), Suprabha (an ardent Biophiliac, writer, poet & an educator), Lorenzo (a spirited, young hearted educator and life-skill expert from Europe contributing  for 30+ years to the sanctuary), Nikita (our lively camp coordinator), Suma (orchid expert), Laly (fern specialist), Sora (rock garden & landscape designer), Purvi (Shola specialist ), Graham (long-time friend of the sanctuary) alongside 40+ dedicated gardeners and the Green Phoenix (a committed conservation team of tribal people  & settler-farmers).

Skilled & well accomplished visiting facilitators like: Shyamal (Naturalist who regularly contributes to Wikipedia), Edith & Mans (who promote agro ecology through ETC across 65000 acres of organic cultivations), Sonali & Kaustubh (Anthropologist, playwright & faculty at the Azim Premji Foundation), father & daughter duo - Arun Agnihotri (childrens’ education through theatre) & Sameera (Bird & Insect Expert working with Soliga Tribes) & Meera (ardent forest researcher with a keen eye for animal behaviour).

New-age internet companies are going big on soft-skill training

Latest Updates - CA Mitesh BENGALURU: Apprentice or soft-skill training programme providers are seeing a significant influx from newage internet companies including ecommerce, food-tech and fintech, in a shift from sectors like manufacturing and automobiles.Clientele from these businesses are growing significantly for soft-skill trainers. Though these sectors are still nascent, demand has been rising. Over the past six months, these firms have witnessed an overall growth close to 30% and 75-80% monthly while a majority of this hiring is in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi.These trainings cater to blue-collared, grey-collared and white-collared workforce.“In the ecommerce segment, our trainees mostly handle and supervise warehouse management, customer service, despatch management and website management,” said Shantanu Rooj, founder and CEO of Mumbai-based SchoolGuru Eduserve.Rooj adds that in companies like Swiggy, Zomato and Big Basket, roles also include that of customer service, delivery coordinator and executives, warehousing, packaging management, quality control and sales.These companies have also tied up with fintech companies including Bharat Pay and Google Pay where the personnel are largely trained for field roles.“Under our apprentice programme NETAP, we blend different learning forms, which give flexibility, customisation and leads to overall development of the candidate. We blend onthe-job learnings, which give handson experience, with theoretical learning which is offered either through online mechanism or with onsite mechanism or with an oncampus learning wherein the trainees come to our campus for learning,” said Sumit Kumar, vice president–NETAP, TeamLease Services, an HR services firm.He added that these businesses have been growing significantly over the last few months.“The people enrolled are either fresh school passouts, dropouts or those pursuing higher education. About 50% of the population is undergraduates who undergo such training,” Kumar added.“In a world where we are talking about technology and automation, the biggest differentiator for humans is going to be our soft skills. The skills which help us communicate, comprehend, collaborate, create and connect. There is a clear need to invest in soft skills for one and all and hence from that perspective it is a need which is unlikely to run short of demand,” said Rituparna Chakraborty, cofounder of TeamLease Services.Experts tracking the space say such companies shell out ?10,000-15,000 monthly on a trainee. After the training, they earn an average of between ?8,000 and ?18,000 depending on the role and location.The gig economy, in a nutshell, means where a company typically offers short-term contracts or freelance work to its drivers and delivery personnel, among others. Most of these roles that mushroom from internet consumer companies are categorised under the gig economy, mostly led by the likes of Ola, Uber, Swiggy and Zomato.Overall, the gig economy accounts for more than 1.4 million jobs in India, which mostly includes delivery staff, drivers, beauticians and maintenance workers, according to BetterPlace, a platform for blue-collar workers.New-age internet companies have been ramping up training for their workforces seeing the rise of complaints from customers. Besides this training, these companies have also been rendering training to their partners on fronts including technology, behavioural skills, personality development, guidelines for safe riding, skill development through customised simulation and case studies.“Even larger companies provide additional skillsets training while hiring freshers. This is inevitable for any company irrespective of size or sector.
