Comme il en change tous les 2 ans, JM a pré-commandé son nouvel iPhone. Il s’agit du 15 Pro Max et devrait arriver autour du 17 octobre.

Bien sûr il a lu tous les articles parus à son sujet mais celui-ci (voir ci-dessous), particulièrement, a retenu toute son attention. Quand on y réfléchit, les prouesses techniques réalisées par les ingénieurs des grands fabricants de smartphones sont incroyables !

Le téléobjectif est un des nombreux exemples de leur savoir-faire…

Smartphones : ils cachent des téléobjectifs dignes des appareils photo professionnels

Elle est devenue l’une des caractéristiques essentielles des smartphones : la puissance du téléobjectif pour se rapprocher du sujet à photographier. Mais attention, à ne pas confondre « zoom optique » et « zoom numérique ».

Avez-vous déjà vu un téléobjectif photo de 120 mm ? J’en ai pris un pour le mesurer : plus de 15 cm de long. Alors comment les constructeurs de smartphones réussissent-ils à faire tenir un tel téléobjectif dans l’épaisseur d’un téléphone portable : moins de 1 cm ?

Restons sur cet exemple de 120 mm puisque c’est exactement la focale maximale que propose l’iPhone 15 Pro Max, sorti le vendredi 22 septembre 2023. Ce bond est rendu possible par l’intégration de ce que le fabricant appelle un « tetra prisme ». Résultat : un zoom optique qui passe de x3 à x5, l’équivalent, donc d’un 120 mm. Et il est très lumineux, puisque le diaphragme ouvre à f/2.8.

L’idée, c’est celle du périscope comme dans un sous-marin : un ensemble de lentilles, couplé à un ou plusieurs prismes, des petits miroirs qui vont dévier la lumière, pour ne plus être limité par la finesse du téléphone. En virant à 90°, la lumière peut passer à travers davantage de lentilles, cette fois, dans la largeur du smartphone où il y a beaucoup plus de place. C’est exactement ce que fait Apple avec son « tetra prisme » dans l’iPhone 15 Pro Max, mais en déviant les rayons lumineux quatre fois, pour bénéficier d’une plus grande distance entre les lentilles et le capteur, qui enregistre l’image.

OPPO avait été le tout premier fabricant à présenter ce type d’objectif, avec son 5X en 2017. En 2019, on l’avait retrouvé chez Huawei sur le P30 avec, déjà, un zoom optique x5. En réalité, c’est devenu un standard dans le monde Android, puisqu’on rencontre un objectif périscopique sur le Pixel 7 Pro de Google et sur le Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra : une optique peu lumineuse (f/4.9) dans les deux cas, mais qui propose un zoom optique x10, dans le cas de Samsung.

Et donc, le graal, c’est bien le zoom optique de l’iPhone 15 Pro Max – 120mm, ouverture f/2,8.

NB Les smartphones sont aussi dotés d’un « zoom numérique », mais qui se contente de grossir les pixels artificiellement avec, en contrepartie, une dégradation rapide et très visible de la qualité de l’image. Ne vous laissez pas griser par les fiches techniques qui promettent des grossissements spectaculaires, type 30x ou plus, vous risquez d’être très déçu du résultat !

Robb posted about the phones he’d owned over the years and it reminded me of a note I’d started a while back and never finished, chronicling all the devices that have occupied a place inside my pocket over the years.

I know the timeline of some of these is blurry and I’m confident I’m missing a couple somewhere in there but I think it illustrates that I clearly have issues. I’m ignoring all the pre-smartphone devices I’ve owned but, for the record, my first phone was a Nokia 6110.

Phew. Quite the list. Let’s break down some highs and lows.

Best “fun” phone

The OnePlus One was such a great phone to mess around with. Flashing different ROMs, swapping out the backplate, there was never a dull moment.

Worst phone

This was, without question, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The plastic phone felt cheap, TouchWhiz UI was sluggish and ugly, the battery was terrible… I used it for a couple weeks and returned it. This was where I first felt intrigued by “phablet” devices but it was otherwise a brutal experience, and I owned a Blackberry Storm, think about that for a second.

Best Android phone

My “panda” Pixel 2 XL was the best Android phone ever, though the Nexus 6 was a close second. After the disaster experience with the Note 3, I was always curious what using a good huge phone might be like. The Nexus 6 was that.

The Pixel 2 XL was a big, sturdy, gorgeous piece of hardware with a smooth, pure Android experience. It was as close as I ever felt, using the devices I did, that Google got to replicating the iPhone experience.

Best iPhone

This is a really tough call. The iPhone 4 had the best design but the iPhone 6 Plus stands out because of how long I’d been waiting for a larger iPhone. I never liked the rounded sides of those generations of iPhone though so I think the iPhone 12 would be where I’d land. It had a great design, tons of power, and iOS was really firing around then too (iOS 14–17).

In closing

Every now and then I check out Pixel phones when I’m at Best Buy or wherever and am a bit tempted but I really dislike the direction Google’s gone with their Android UI. The performance of those devices has come a long way but I just can’t see myself wading back into the Google ecosystem at this point. Nothing is doing really cool stuff with their hardware but, again, anything involving Google or the Play Store at this point is a non-starter for me.

The iPhone really kind of does it all. I’m thoroughly ingrained in the ecosystem and, for the most part, happy with what I’ve got there. Since day one, the iPhone has held up for me and, in the case where I’ve had issues, our local Apple Store has always been really helpful.

I've been a pure AOSP (Android) person since the Nexus days. Those devices were seamless and fluid as it could get in regards to Android OS. I'd have to say that when it came to smooth transition and fluid gestures it was always Windows Phone OS. That is until they decided to pull the plug on the entire platform, maybe the over purchase of Nokia was enough for them to make that decision to just throw in the cards ? Maybe not, maybe they just decided to leave the Mobile OS wars to iPhone (iOS) and Google (AOSP) but nevermind that. I bought it first Google Pixel (6 Pro) back in April when my iPhone 12 Pro was stolen at the Dulles International Airport (DC) and it probably was the best decision that I've made since switching from Android to the iOS back in (2016) with the iPhone 7 simply because the Nexus program was axed. I didn't know I was missing out on a better experience and just as fluid which is what I go for because I do enjoy the User Interface and palette of colors and options within the Vanilla OS experience. Unlike no other right now, Android 14 is sh°°°° on iOS. I have an iPhone 13 that my sister gifted me with she bought the iPhone 15. I have experienced iOS 17 it's dope I have to say but it's just little gimmicks in comparison to Android. I'm trying to make the decision whether or not to just shell out the $1077 for the Pixel 8 Pro. Why, the Pro ? Because when it comes to the Google Pixel 8 you gotta go Pro or go home. That's just how I see it. The extra $300 is totally understandable and the comparison of the specs the internal infrastructure and the experience. I'm really waiting for the pixel OS to finally become phased in.

Android 14. Solid AF, but with all of the other OEMs scrambling to develop their own OS, it seems like it's going to be rather sooner than later. I haven't met anyone with the iPhone 15 Pro Max so I can't really give my opinion on it but I haven't either seen or experienced the Pixel 8 Pro or Pixel 8, for that matter. Probably won't start seeing them for another week or so and adding the fact that there's only a certain type of person who will order the 8 Pro variant, I'll say at least til November. I've yet to tinker with either, If there was a Google Store location here in Orlando, Florida I would have been done that but apparently it's too small of a market to even invest on Google's behalf. The differentiation from my pixel 6 Pro and regards to Android 14. There is a differentiation between the devices that you're running the OS on. Whether you know it or not, it does exist. I know it sounds cliche or over the wall but this is why people spend the amounts of money they spend on flagship devices.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is Apple's Hottest New Phone (Literally)

We suppose it's safe to say that no smartphone is perfect - a lot of devices out there will each have their own little quirks, whether it be via isolated cases or through serious manufacturing defects which might sometimes result in a recall. While the latter isn't probably the case with Apple's newest iPhone 15 series, it looks like a considerable number of users are having trouble with their devices nonetheless. More specifically, owners of the iPhone 15 Pro Max (the most expensive in Apple's 2023 lineup) have reported heating issues with their devices, so much so that we even tried checking out how hot our iPhone 15 Pro Max got. Folks have posted concerns on social media indicating that their iPhone 15 Pro Max units generated some rather-unwelcome heat during usage, which varied from user to user. If you clicked on the link to the video above, a quick test using a thermal scanner on our iPhone 15 Pro Max shows that the handset reached a high of 39 degrees celsius, which is pretty hot even for most phones. While most smartphones will generate heat from extended usage via gaming, data and GPS use, or maxed-out display brightness, most won't reach alarmingly-high temperatures. In order to mitigate issues like these, a lot of manufacturers have resorted to installing cooling systems on their devices. One good example is ASUS' ROG phone line, which features a "rapid-cycle vapor chamber design," which the company claims improves heat dissipation efficiency by up to 168%. There's even an optional attachment that clips on the ROG phone's rear panel, and acts as an external cooling fan. In the case of the iPhone 15 Pro Max however, it doesn't seem like Apple has installed an active cooling system of any sort on the phone, which has resulted in subsequent heating issues. Coupled with the more power-hungry A17 Pro Bionic chip, some users are now wary about using their iPhone for more intensive tasks and apps. Some are even comparing it to the A15 Bionic chip on the iPhone 13 series, which managed to balance performance and heat management during usage. There are suspicions that the A17 Pro Bionic might have been developed using a similar architecture as last year's A16 Bionic chip, which essentially meant that the A17's push for more power has affected the iPhone 15 Pro's overall thermal management capabilities. Prior to the launch of the 15 Pro, Google's Pixel 7 series have been noted for its heating issues as well, which many attribute to Google's Tensor G2 chip. This overheating has also resulted in users observing throttling on their devices, with temperatures reportedly reaching as high as 48 degrees celsius. Given Apple's big marketing push for the iPhone 15 Pro to double as a dedicated gaming device (with games such as Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake scheduled for release), this issue certainly warrants concern, and hopefully a fix from Apple is on the way, or in the works at the very least. Samsung has spared no expense in terms of the features, prices, and specs with its powerful flagship, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in Kenya.

The company announced on August 5th 2020, that they will release the new phone in the market. Going for around Ksh. 120,000 this is the most expensive flagship smartphone it has released.

It comes with the 5G, and yes, you pay the extra money for the 5G. Though 5 only people in Kenya might end up using it!

Put 5G aside, we review the improvements that in this device such as the S pen, cameras, software, battery capacity, and everything. We’ll also look at some reviews online from others who have used it. It’s always good to get a second opinion.

There is only one thing you should consider when buying this phone. That is fact that it heats up.

This is where the S20 Ultra beats the Galaxy Note20 ultra. It has a copper heat pipe and vapor chamber that allows the device to cool.

Chipset /iOS

The Note 20 Ultra operates on OS Android 10,One UI 2.5

The Chipset Exynos 990 (7 nm+) Snapdragon 865 Plus has improved the overall performance. It’s its standard hardwarer the latest apps. It’s standard hardware is impressive.

Display

The design of the phone is naughty altruistically.

Samsung phones are famous for being big, and the Note 20 Ultra isn’t any different. The phone has a gorgeous screen of 6.9 inches, the device takes the perfect shape of a slab. This will make you feel as if you are using a notebook, which i guess its the whole idea behind the Note series.

Dynamic AMOLED 2X capacity touchscreen, 16M colors display is great. It sets you to enjoy your scrolling when you turn on the adaptive motion smoothness.

The resolution 1440 x 3088 pixels (~496 ppi density) is great. One thing you should know that you cant have max refresh rate at 120 and still get the maximum resolution on the screen. Though the fresh rates save on the battery life that would otherwise be consumed by the device.

The back of this smartphone has a matte finish, which looks better than a glossy finish, though its slippery than normal phones.

Both the front and the back of the phone have a Gorilla Glass Victus, which strengthens your phone and more resistance to scratch compared to normal glass being used on other phones.

JerryGigEeverything conducted a test on the phone, and he is quite impressed with it. He also found out that the device is covered with both plastic, gorrila glass and aluminum foil.

Cnet also, placed the gorilla glass under intense pressure to test its limits, turns out, it breaks. I guess glass is still glass.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has 12 GB RAM, which is enough for an android phone to perform a bunch of tasks without running out of storage. It also has a 126GB storage space. Allowing you to save up all the important content.

You can expand the storage up to 512GB using a SD card, and expense you will incur extra charges.

The processor of this phone is qualcomm snapdragon 439 Octa Core. They ensured that this flagship device is 5G enabled. This is great for those with ideas of a smart home.

Battery Capacity

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a 4500mAh High-capacity battery. You can use the screen time for up to 9 hours before you recharge it again. At night, the device is draining about 6-10% of the battery when on stand by.

The ultra-wide 12 MP AI rear camera produces okay but not amazing photos, which is basically what you would get with any android ultra-wide camera.

Front AI Beauty Camera

The selfie has 10 MP with a f/2.2, 26mm, it will make the images you take look soft. Such that even without makeup, you will appear as if you have make up on. What they are trying to achieve with their phones is to make you look good. You are free to love or hate them for that!

This feature ashamed iPhone 11 Pro Max’s because they don’t come anywhere close to it. The cheaper version of this phone, Galaxy S 20 has lower zoom count and megapixels.

Finally, the big camera has a triple 108 MP with an aperture of f/1.8. You will take some incredible master pieces.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 series

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in Kenya is a great phone. What makes it perfect is the minor improvements made by the company. Better low light photography, all options when shooting video, no fingerprint smudge on the back of the phone and the variable refresh rate saving on the battery.

Could Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 do better? Yes, for a flagship of 2020 costing this much, they should expand the storage they are offering from 126 GB to 256 GB. But then again, every time you buy a phone there, a trade-offs you have to make.

Would i recommend you buy this phone? The answer is both Yes and No. Buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or 10 would still perform a decent job and they are less expensive.

One reason why people upgrade their devices is cause the latest smartphone is super nice and flashy. But that’s not with Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the phone is not classy but it is a tech bump. it has better improvements from what there is on the other note smartphones. Making it worth your time and money when you buy this phone.
