Apple Extends Technology Fee to iPad Apps in Response to EU Rules
Tech giant adapts pricing model after iPadOS is designated a "gatekeeper platform" under the Digital Markets Act.
Tumblr media
Apple is expanding its controversial "core technology fee" to encompass iPad apps, the company confirmed Thursday. This move comes in response to the European Union adding iPadOS to its list of "gatekeeper platforms" subject to strict regulations under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The fee, initially announced in March, stands at 50 euro cents per user account annually. It applies to major app developers even if they don't utilize Apple's App Store or payment services. Only the first million user accounts are exempt.
Apple's fee is part of a broader set of pricing adjustments designed to bring the company into compliance with the DMA. The landmark EU legislation seeks to open up Apple's closed ecosystem, forcing it to allow app developers to distribute iPhone apps directly to users, bypassing the App Store.
"Apple will bring our recent iOS changes for apps in the European Union to iPadOS later this fall, as required," the company stated in a blog post. "The CTF will also apply to iPadOS apps downloaded through the App Store, Web Distribution, and/or alternative marketplaces."
The company offered some concessions for smaller developers. Those with less than 10 million euros in annual revenue will either pay no CTF or a reduced fee over a three-year period. Developers with zero revenue—like students or those creating free apps – will not be charged the CTF.
Currently, the CTF exemption applies to developers whose apps don't exceed one million first annual installs per year, along with non-profits, government agencies, and specific educational institutions.

It's honestly a shame that iPads can't have their OS ripped off of them and replaced with Linux. My 10.5-inch iPad Pro is my favorite device I own. The portable 11-inch form factor, the optional touch screen, the Apple Pencil. All of it is so great. I just end up never using it because it can't even do basic computer tasks due to its lack of third-party apps. If I could get proper, desktop-class, LibreOffice running on my iPad, I don't think I'd ever touch my laptop again.

Hey iG’s,
We have an embarrassing story for you… 😭
Our parent blog @digitalchase took us all down when we decided to take a step back from our blogs due to rising running costs of the website and design materials.
Fast forward to early 2023, we’re going about our daily lives when a friend comments on how they loved our recent post… we then find some person had taken it upon themselves to access our blog, but like most multichannel blogs, logging in to one, gives access to them all.
It has taken us months to get access to the blogs again due to lack of “proof of ownership” 🤦‍♂️ but fast forward and we finally regain access 🎉.
The event, while stressful; was also a blessing in disguise. It brought the team back together, showed us what we were missing. ❤️
It’s with great pleasure to announce we will be coming back to Tumblr and our website with the latter expected to launch sometime this fall 🤞🏼. We’ll keep you updated over on @digitalchase and here.
We can’t wait to welcome you all back properly to the next version of Digital Chase X iGuy - 2024 actually marks 10 years since ‘DC’ launched. 🎉
Speak soon 😘

Apple may have discontinued 3D Touch in favor of Haptic Touch (an objectively bad decision) on all their devices, including the ones with the force touch hardware, but the one device they apparently forget to remove it is iPads?
Ever since the original iPad Pro and Apple Pencil came out, you've been able to use your Apple Pencil to trigger 3D Touch. All iPads have Haptic Touch, but when using an Apple Pencil, you can press hard on the screen, which triggers the secondary tap option faster, implying that iPadOS still has code in it that understands touching with depth. Not a single iPad has 3D Touch hardware, outside of the Apple Pencil, but for some reason this is the only place Apple hasn't killed this feature.
