The Story of My MCR Concert
First of all, I was SO HYPE FOR THIS SHOW, obviously. Years of delays, and then Gerard’s costumes started to hit the Internet, and it just so happened that my anxiety was under control for the first time in a long time. This was going to be LIFE-CHANGING.
Interestingly, the tickets were actually a birthday present from me to my sister, who was the first one of us to discover MCR, but she doesn’t get into bands like I do (meaning she doesn’t learn EVERY SONG and learn the whole background and lore of the band), so I think the songs she knew consisted of like Cancer, Black Parade, and I’m Not Okay. No shade at all, we just like things in different ways!
But here’s some shade, my sister is always late. So she took forever getting ready AS ALWAYS, and while she did that, I started to scheme. I happened to have a… specially infused beverage hidden away in the fridge, and I remembered a mini disposable plastic water bottle rolling around on the floor of my car. I snuck outside, got the water bottle, snuck back in, washed it, and transferred enough beverage into the bottle to deliver what I estimated to be about 15 mg of Substance. I marked that on the bottle, then added the same amount again. Two equal doses.
I was driving and generally in charge of making sure the night went well, which I’m tempted to say was a mistake but really, it wasn’t. You’ll see. I finally dragged my sister’s ass to my car, made sure we had our vaccine cards and everything else we could possibly need in my transparent plastic bag, and hit the road.
And hit the traffic. Yeah, as it turns out, the Tacoma Dome area gets kind of busy when fucking My Chemical Romance is playing. In my defense, I’d only ever been to the Dome as a younger teenager, and my mom took care of everything and did the driving that time. Luckily, neither my sister or I had any need to see the opening bands, and thank god honestly because that would’ve stressed me the hell out.
Against my sister’s advice to drive more into the city sector to find somewhere to park on the street, I turned into the longest goddamn line of cars to get into a Dome parking lot. I told my sister hey, I brought us some beverage if you’d like to take yours now so it can start working. It’s 15 mg. We’ll be here for a while. She drank her half of the beverage and we continued chatting, complaining about the line, and listening to MCR.
The line moved up. Sloooooowly. I figured we were close enough that it was a good time to drink my half of the special beverage.
And then my sister started saying she was feeling it, and it had *only* been half an hour. I gave her a Nutrigrain bar. And I thought oh SHIT. I am driving the car. I estimated an hour for this substance to kick in. If it’s kicking in that fast, it will hit me while I am driving the car. And that is not safe.
So long story short, my sister is a lightweight.
Luckily, I remained sober while driving the car. It was JUST starting to hit as I was finally parking, and I thought the drama was over.
WRONG. The lady at the door (after ANOTHER line) wouldn’t take the tickets I had downloaded into my Apple Wallet, she needed the Ticketmaster barcode. What the fuck??? It didn’t say that anywhere! She forced us out of line with the other poor saps having this issue. And my phone wouldn’t load the Ticketmaster website! Thank fuck, my sister’s phone loaded it after a very tense few minutes and I was able to put in my account details to get to the barcode. We were in!
We were in, but my sister was starting to freak out, because again, apparently a lightweight. It’s worth mentioning that she started doing Substance WAY before I did and is overall much cooler than me. But it was very loud and the sensory shit was getting to her, and we’d been walking in circles around the Tacoma Dome’s interior looking for our seats. It’s hard as hell to find your section in there! She also wanted earplugs because I had my special chambered ones, but she’d forgotten to bring any. There was a help desk that gave her some for free, though, so that was one problem solved. But she was in sensory overload and overall way too high, and we really needed to find our seats.
We had shit seats. That was always the plan; they were cheap. But they were also way up in the air, so we climbed stairs and stairs and stairs and finally sat down after scooching past a bunch of people already sitting. I got a quick moment of rest and then had to start solving the problem of my tripping balls (exaggeration, not even accurate) sister. I decided she needed a pretzel and a water, and fast, so off I went, back past the people, down the stairs, and to a food vendor (no line this time!). Two pretzels with nacho cheese, one bag of kettle corn, two bottles of water, exorbitant prices, but I was just happy to be there. The substance didn’t hit me nearly as hard as my sis, for whatever reason, and I was feeling pretty awesome, if a little hungry.
Back up to our seats and my sister devoured her pretzel, which helped a lot with chilling her out. From there, everything was basically perfect! The show was obviously amazing, and I screamed myself hoarse. We were totally exhausted but so happy afterwards.

I think he tian as the worst childhood too like maybe is father is the cause of is mother dead is bro already killed people in front of him when he was little he think is dog is dead bc of is bro now he sleep with light on and is very depressed and lonely and is family is in the mafia business he know in the future he gotta do pretty much what is bro doing but I think he gonna take another path has is bro but well see anyways that make me feel like cryy 😭😢
I think you may be onto something, dear anon. I wouldn’t personally go as far as to say that He Tian had the worst childhood, after all, MGS is also a contender for this one; it’s just that their childhoods represent different kinds of shitty-ness. Warning, there’s a ton of text below.
It’s possible that HT’s family business (whatever it is, mafia or not) was the reason why his mother is supposedly dead. There’s a panel depicting one of HT’s nightmares, where he sees himself on a burning yacht. I do believe that his mother might have died there.
It’s also possible that young HT blamed his parent for her death. Such trauma is not easily processed by young children, and various bitter feelings towards his father might stem from it. Now, I’m sure that He Tian’s father isn’t a psycho or a monster, but he probably is an authoritarian figure. The kind that is obsessed with the idea of dynasty. It’s possible that he’s been trying to mould his sons into his likeness, i.e. make them follow in his footsteps, become successors to his business (again, whatever it is). As far as I know, He Cheng has been shown to have mafia connections, but we don’t know yet about their father. With that said, it’s not implausible to suppose that He Tian might have been forced into doing things against his will. I think it was @barabounty who made a post that dealt with translating the captions for some official illustrations in OX artbook. There’s one picture of HT supposedly in his father’s house that is titled “Prisoner”.
And here’s the panel from the manhua, when HT agreed to see his father after He Cheng saved MGS from the angry mob. The interior looks similar, so I suppose it’s one of his father’s houses.
I think the title alone gives an accurate impression of what He Tian was forced to experience. On top of that, let’s look at He Tian’s fighting abilities. I’ve already touched upon that in another post, but his hand-to-hand fighting in so incredible, it almost screams “he was taught”. What kind of family makes their child into a fighting machine? That’s a rhetoric question.
That leads me to believe that since He Tian apparently experienced love through being forced to do something, it might be part of the reason why he used to be so forceful with Momo. He simply doesn’t know any different.
To this day, HT exhibits some signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. Those are his repeating nightmares where he’s literally tossing and screaming in cold sweat (he also shows similar symptoms when dreaming about the incident with that dog, so it’s safe to assume it had been an incredible blow for him). It is literary him experiencing drowning in the open sea (hence why he’s kinda afraid of the darkness).
However, the symbolism of this scene goes beyond just a life-threatening situation. OX drew it in a very clever way. The yacht is burning, bloodied He Cheng is probably the only surviving member of his family and He Tian is literally refusing to leave. He’s screaming that he wants to stay (with his brother, with his family), but He Cheng symbolically abandons his brother by tossing him into the dark water, literally throwing him at the deep end. In He Tian’s mind, his brother left him alone.
It’s worth noting, that it’s nighttime and young He Tian is apparently wearing pajamas or sleeping clothes. Cue present day and He Tian is still sleeping fully clothed when he’s home alone (as opposed to Momo, who sleeps half-naked). It’s subtly hinting that He Tian doesn’t feel safe – that he expects shit to break out any moment, hence why he’s clothed and ready for the fight-or-flight instinct to kick in. Or maybe I’m looking into it way too much, haha.
The puppy episode is also very telling. I don’t know whether TVtropes ever pointed that out, but the moment when He Cheng tells He Tian that he buried the puppy really fits into the Broken Pedestal trope: He Tian’s faith and trust in his caring older brother are shattered. He felt betrayed. His secret he entrusted to his closest person was betrayed. This is apparently when the crack in their relationship began. The painful thing here is that He Tian apparently started to believe that he couldn’t trust anyone, even those close.
Which brings me to another point. He Tian suffers from profound loneliness. It’s different from the kind of lonely that MGS experienced. True, MGS had been bullied and ostracized, and he has grown that delinquent persona in order to show others that he doesn’t fucking need them, yet he still managed to connect with others, like his gang. He also had a safe harbour at home, with his loving mother.
He Tian had none of it. People don’t see past his money or cool persona, and he’s nearly always surrounded by sycophants that applaud him whatever he does or says. He doesn’t have a safe harbour home: his relationship with his brother and father is broken, and he apparently suffered a lot of emotional neglect and deprivation in his childhood. Hell, his flat doesn’t even have a touch of anything personal, like personal possessions (excluding basketball stuff and a couple of magazines). It’s like he’s refusing to grow attachments (until MGS comes along, and maybe Jian Yi to an extent). It’s also clear why: he’s afraid that it’ll be taken away from him again. Bottom line, HT is deeply alone, and the sad thing is that this loneliness is very much ingrained in him. OX really underscores it by showing He Tian’s apartment: his figure is tiny against its vast space. And really, his smoking habit? A detrimental crutch.
Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if in the future chapters OX will show that HT has self-esteem issues. He seems to be living with a burn of failure. He failed to protect something he loved (puppy, mother), hence why he’s trying so hard with Mo. He was ready to protect him to his last drop of blood, even when it was a pretty much suicidal move against the angry mob.
All in all, it’s a sad story, true. I won’t be saying his childhood is worse than the one MGS had; it’s really impossible to compare such things. Comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges: they are simply different. Both bullying/abuse and emotional neglect/abuse have detrimental consequences on psychological and physical levels. Each is horrible in its own way, and both lead to lasting trauma, damaging both sense of self and the ability to form relationships with others.
As for HT working in the family business, yes, it is a possibility. But as I said earlier, I don’t believe his father is as much of a monster as He Tian imagines. True, he may not be a good father, but I’m sure there are things and reasons that He Tian isn’t aware of yet. Or rather, I should put it as the road to hell is paved with good intentions. He Tian’s father undoubtedly wished the best for his son, but his methods clearly were questionable, as was the environment He Tian grew up in. I strongly believe that at some point he shall mend his relationship with He Cheng and his father. At least, there won’t be any animosity.
I’m also sure that He Tian will get better. Of course, it will take A LOT of time and patience, but I’m positive that HT and MGS can heal each other’s wounds and give one another what they had been deprived of.

Natter #3 24th June 2020
So, on Saturday morning, I took part of my breakfast (yogurt) from our backup fridge in the garage, but when I put the first spoonful in my mouth I noticed that it was warm. Strange that. So I checked the fridge and found that everything in it was warm. The freezer contents - weren't.This was a disaster as I had been to QFC a couple of days previously buying frozen and fresh foods including four half gallons of milk. Jean had been out the day after for the first time in 12 weeks and part of her haul was more milk and ice cream.I imagine that the excitement of being out again at last and back to her old stamping grounds overcame memory. So here we were rushing around trying to save what we could by rearranging everything in the kitchen fridge and then trying to close the door. The old fridge was possibly down on refrigerant and I was a bit annoyed for a brief moment until I remembered when we bought it. It was when we lived at the 'old house' way back in 1970 and it was already a year old when we got it! My word - 50 years old. I should have remembered as it's color is 'Harvest Gold' which hasn't been seen on store shelves in donkeys ages. I tend not to date things by color though, as modern colors mean little to me - 'Taupe' for instance means less than nothing. My lexicon runs in terms of the spectrum. But forgetting it's date made me think back to those 'Old House days' and what we were about then. Those days and other old days that preceded that time. My memory of 'then' is perfectly clear - it seems just like it was yesterday even though I know how long ago it actually was. So many friends and relatives who are no longer around to share those times with, One of the things that have remained constant is our phone number. Of course, then we had an exchange name - Adams 2, which has now been transmuted to numbers - 232, and I think doing this has lost the feeling of romance that it seemed to have for me. When I was a kid many of our dairy and grocery items were delivered to the door by horse-drawn carts - very few people or businesses had a sufficiently high priority during the war to have a petrol ration. Mum had joined the "Co-op" for convenience and of course, there was the benefit of a bonus payout at year's end. I loved these horses and would meet them outside and feed them apples, carrots and whatever else I had to hand. Still firmly in my mind is the Co-op number I had to recite to the driver when we had milk or groceries delivered - 157376.Being horses they would leave proof of their passage along the road and my Dad would pay me a shilling per bucket full of 'Golden Apples' as my Dad referred to this natural function It seemed like it was too demeaning a job for a full-grown adult and using his term was sort of distancing himself from the unpleasantness. It used to embarrass me a bit too, but you couldn't argue with the reward. it was all grist to the mill, and it did do the roses a power of good. In 1956, I had been out of the RAF for a year and had also just recently returned home from a very long sojourn in hospital, and my Dad was persuaded, against his will, to have a phone installed. Phones were not then usual to find in most houses and my Dad's reluctance was based on the very real belief that his company could too easily find him at inconvenient times. I told him that it was an absolute necessity in that day and age and so at last it was installed. Our phone number was Fairlands 4725 and as I said, I remember the old exchanges with affection. Others in our neighborhood were Derwent and Vigilant and my favorite Aunt had the best I always felt - Silverthorn - lovely. The Fairlands exchange was essential to me as when I was discharged from the hospital I had left behind a lovely German nurse with whom I had developed special feelings. When I had become sufficiently fit to allow me to leave the hospital and walk around the grounds, I used to collect any outgoing mail from other patients who were still confined to bed and take it some distance up the road, through the snow to a mailbox. Just to make sure I would be okay, Irmgard, for such was her name, would accompany me and we would find a need to indulge in long hugs and exchange lip locks - just to keep the cold at bay you understand? Shared bodily warmth is a great way to defeat the weather! Later, returning to the hospital, which had been a big old private house standing in its own grounds, we would split up at the circular drive with a last goodnight kiss. Irmgard would go round to the kitchen door and I would go the other way to the front door. Knowing that our companion runs were our secret, I was surprised to find the youngish Matron just inside the door. With a twinkle in her eye, she asked if it was cold out and I acknowledged that it was. She told me that I should be careful that I didn't get chapped lips, but then added that lipstick was a sovereign remedy - and departed with a grin. So much for secrecy! Irmgard's phone exchange name at the hospital was Coombe Wood - not exactly what might be termed 'romantic' but association made it so. Our association was quite intense and a forthcoming proposal, whilst welcomed, was at that time impossible for Irmgard to accept. Her sister was soon to marry, another Englishman and they would be returning to England to live after their honeymoon. She would not leave her parents alone just like that. She had been sent to England for a couple of years to improve her English and was soon to return home to Bad Canstatt, just outside Stuttgart. As I was about to return to my studies we were parted and unlikely to meet again any time soon. So our contacts were limited to letters and very rare and expensive phone calls and so the Canstatt exchange also lives brightly in my memory. Unfortunately, long-distance relations tend to strain circumstances and over time our contacts became less and less, Sometime later I reached a point where I was able to take a trip to the Continent. I wrote to Irmgard to tell her that at last I was able to come over to see her, not being really sure of my reception as I hadn't written for ages.Within days I had a reply and although she was totally delighted that I was coming she told me that she had become engaged. I couldn't really blame her as I had been very lax, but she wanted me to come and meet her family when I arrived. She was really very good and took me all over the city and ended at her parents' home in the evening to a party for her sister and new husband, just returned from their honeymoon on Lake Constance. It was a really nice evening and I got on very well with her parents, but of course, I didn't like her fiance at all! After all this, although I had been given her brother-in-law's name and address back home I was never able to contact him. I would love to have kept up to know how her life proceeded. I still have her framed portrait photograph she sent me when she had first returned home, inscribed "Zur stehten Erinnerung" Deine Irmgard. I have been occupying some of my evenings on the computer lately sorting and printing out the Natters that Jo & Tom and Janet have been good enough to get to me. As they all seem to have been listed well out of order I am busy trying to see what I have and what might yet still be missing. The job has been compounded by the difficulty I have experienced in opening the Flash Drive. Sometimes it allows me to zip along, opening files, but then will stop and nothing will work. Next day I try again and I am off to the races again. But I am getting there slowly and tonight (Monday) I completed taking off hardcopies, Now I can sort through, putting them in chronological order and see what I shall see. Much more later, but there seems to be nothing before 2012 so I guess that was when I started. As I mentioned last Natter I have been attacking Lily of the Valley and I am almost finished - at least with what was visible. Along the way, I have also removed Sword ferns, Cedar seedlings five feet high and Jasmine. The Jasmine was an insignificant rooted cutting, from where I have no recollection. It had been placed in a pot on the ground and had been overgrown by all sorts of stuff and over the last year had gone nuts. It was to be used at the Plant Sale and now there are five separate plants threatening to strangle you on the approach to the greenhouse so of course, they have to go. The final gap in my deer-proof fencing was completed a week ago but I forgot to mention it to the deer and my hostas have now been browsed off on three separate occasions. As soon as it looks like there might be leaves on Empress Wu that might be reaching terminal size, they disappear and I am beginning to think that I will have to curtail totally growing the items they obviously consider their personal snack bar. 'Doesn't really leave much selection but at least, so far, my cardiocrinums don't feature on their menu. 'Have to be grateful for small mercies I suppose. One good thing has come out of this. My neighbor (ex MG Jill) who has allowed me to use three raised beds to grow veg, has been getting worried that I might fall from the area where the raised beds live - on a raised part of the garden with a six-foot-high rock wall as it's western boundary. She sees me stepping back to admire my work and then bailing out over the edge. So she is having a large bed prepared at the bottom of the wall, which will be enclosed by a deer-proof cage. It will also benefit from the heat held by the rock wall - all sorts of interesting possibilities there. She is a good friend. So next year we might actually be able to eat something we have grown. 'Haven't been able to do that for the last four years now, except for Onions and Garlic! Got started on removing existing plants today and I think it was the hardest day's work I have done for ages.I had to have a nap in the afternoon, but I couldn't tell whether that was because I had two early start days or the sheer grind of lifting heavy plants. You have likely realised that I am just stumbling along here so I will finish and get to bed.
Your fearless and weary leader.Gordon

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH MOTHER - PROVEN HEALTH BENEFITS

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH MOTHER - PROVEN HEALTH BENEFITS
An ancient and fortuitous “accident” for wine lovers revolutionized food preservation and flavoring. As archeologists have found, cultures around the world discovered the fermentation process long before written history began. Desperate souls experimented with their stinky spoiled fruits and vegetables, and wonder of wonders, learned the joy of fine wine. This resulted in a variety of wines and their bi-product–vinegar–from various fruits and vegetables in common use in the regions of the world.
What a happy historical accident! This discovery gave birth to all the fine wines we enjoy today. The bi-product of wine-making, vinegar, still flavors our finest dishes around the world. The ancient Egyptians and Romans recognized the many healthy properties of wines and vinegar. Around 2500 BC, a nomadic tribe called the Aryans developed a soured apple wine, the grandmother of apple cider vinegar with mother. From the Babylonians to the Aryans to the Phoenicians, the original soured apple wine recipe was passed by word of mouth to the Greeks and Romans who spread the custom on their many trade routes throughout the world. Soon, people began developing apple cider vinegar as a by-product to their home brewed soured apple wines.
The ancients recognized the unique properties of vinegar for many uses. Since its development, apple cider vinegar was used to treat a wide variety of ailments, from mushroom poisoning, to toothaches, to simple dandruff. Before great battles, Japanese Samurai warriors drank it for strength and power. A dilution of apple cider vinegar was consumed by the ancient Persians to prevent the accumulation of fatty tissue, its first known use for weight loss.
The Romans actually concocted a combination of fire and vinegar to break through the rocks when they were conquering the Alps. The famous roads of Rome brought vinegar to new continents around the world as cultures quickly adopted and shared its production and versatile uses in food preservation and as a flavor enhancer. Europe caught on quickly. The English word “vinegar” actually means “sour wine” in French. In America, vinegar was used as an antiseptic during the Civil War and World War I to sanitize wounds on the battlefield. Pickling meats, eggs, fruits, and vegetables with vinegar was as common in early America as it is today. It extended a food’s life exponentially, and when food was scarce, stored food items saved lives.
Current apple cider with vinegar with mother adherents expand its uses. In 1958, apple cider vinegar was described as a traditional home remedy by Dr. D.C. Jarvis in his book Folk Medicine: A Vermont Doctor’s Guide to Good Health. After that, the more widespread medicinal uses of apple cider vinegar increased dramatically. Jarvis lauded the healing properties of apple cider vinegar as a “cure-all,” explaining that it was rich in potassium. He encouraged mixing the apple cider vinegar with honey to enhance its healing power. Jarvis also explained that apple cider vinegar destroys harmful bacteria in the gut and recommended it as a digestive track tonic–to be consumed before meals. Today, apple cider vinegar diet adherents still recommend this basic recipe. As a natural alternative to modern medicine in areas from hair and skin care, to prevention of diabetes and weight loss, its use has grown significantly as any google search will illustrate.
For thousands of years, compounds containing vinegar have been used for their presumed healing properties. It was used to improve warrior strength, for “detoxification,” as an antibiotic, and even as a treatment for scurvy on ancient sailing vessels. While no one is using apple cider vinegar as an antibiotic anymore (at least, no one should be), it has been touted more recently for weight loss. In short, for thousands of years, our ancestors recognized the healing properties and health benefits of apple cider vinegar. Now, modern science has caught up with our elders. As you’ll see, we would be wise to emulate them by adding apple cider vinegar with mother to our daily diets.
“WHO” IS THE MOTHER IN APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH MOTHER?
We’ve all heard of apple cider vinegar, but you may not have heard of apple cider vinegar with mother. Is it sharing a glass or two of apple cider vinegar with your mother–as opposed to a proper glass of wine together? To answer this question, we first need to understand how apple cider vinegar is made.
Two-step production process. Apple cider vinegar is created in a two-step process. First, to break down the sugars in the apple juice, yeast is added to turn it into alcohol. Next, bacteria is added and converts the alcohol into acetic acid, the main active compound in vinegar.
Mother. The bacteria added during the second step is what is known as the “mother” in apple cider vinegar with mother. It is so named because the healthy bacteria, in effect, give “birth” to the vinegar. Commercial apple cider vinegar usually has the mother removed through pasteurization because mother gives the vinegar a cloudy appearance–unappealing to customers who don’t understand the health benefits of apple cider vinegar with mother. Those cloudy trails you see in a good, organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar like Bragg are actually strands of proteins, enzymes and friendly bacteria. Don’t be fooled by the murky appearance of organic apple cider vinegar with mother. As you’ll see, the “mother” is the most healthful part!
HEALTH BENEFITS OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH MOTHER
PROBIOTIC HEALTH: PREVENTION
The probiotics in apple cider vinegar with mother provide preventative health benefits. The mother consists of dozens of good bacteria that we commonly refer to as probiotics. Similar to the properties in yogurt, these help keep your digestive system running smoothly so your body can process and absorb the most healthy benefits from the foods you eat. Because the majority of your immune system is located in your digestive tract, probiotics are a critical part of a healthy immune system and healthy eating routine. The good bacteria compete for limited resources with the bad bacteria in your digestive system, and maintaining a healthy balance helps prevent you from getting sick.
The beneficial effects of probiotics have been demonstrated in many diseases. One of the major mechanisms of probiotic action is through the regulation of host immune response. Recent scientific research findings have advanced our understanding of probiotic regulation of the host immune response with potential application for disease prevention and treatment.
As Dr. Fang Yan and D.B. Polk explained in 2014: Probiotics play a role in defining and maintaining the delicate balance between necessary and excessive defense mechanisms including innate and adaptive immune responses. After reviewing the body of scientific research involving clinical trials, they concluded that probiotics for immune disease prevention and treatment hold great promise. Specifically, they noted that probiotics have potential for clinical effectiveness on preventing the following: intestinal diseases, including infectious diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, atopic diseases, necrotizing enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome, and extraintestinal diseases, such as allergy.
HEALTHY ENZYMES
Apple cider vinegar with mother contains healthy enzymes, too. In addition to probiotics, the mother contains enzymes that are also critical for breaking down foods so that your body can make the best use of the nutrients you eat. Almost all raw foods contain enzymes, but we destroy these enzymes through the process of cooking them. Let’s face it. Most of us don’t eat enough raw fruits and vegetables, so adding apple cider vinegar to your diet–with mother–has the added benefit of making the rest of the food you eat more healthy for you.
HEALTHY BLOOD SUGARS AND PREVENTION OF DIABETES
Apple cider vinegar with mother promotes healthy blood sugar levels and can help prevent diabetes. Consuming raw apple cider vinegar on a daily basis has been shown to be useful in maintaining normal body processes, including healthy blood sugar levels. It works with your body to increase insulin sensitivity and to ensure a slow, steady release of sugar into the bloodstream. Studies have also suggested that apple cider vinegar with mother may help boost feelings of fullness after eating, perhaps contributing to weight loss. Taking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar immediately before eating a meal has been shown to support lower glucose levels and help maintain healthy blood sugar responses after meals. One study found that vinegar decreased blood sugar levels by 31 percent after eating 50 mg of white bread.
Healthline describes the numerous benefits of apple cider vinegar in maintaining healthy blood sugar, which is also related to healthy weight.
Improves insulin sensitivity during a high-carb meal by 19–34% and significantly lowers blood sugar and insulin responses.
Reduces blood sugar by 34% after eating 50 grams of white bread.
2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bedtime can reduce fasting blood sugar in the morning by 4%.
Numerous other studies in humans show that vinegar can improve insulin function and lower blood sugar levels after meals.
As you can see, research suggests that vinegar helps prevent spikes in blood sugar in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes by blocking starch absorption. The implications for the growing science in the health benefits of apple cider vinegar in the treatment and prevention of diabetes are very exciting.
WEIGHT LOSS ROUTINE
Studies suggest that apple cider vinegar with mother aids in weight loss by reducing fatty deposits and food cravings and increasing a sense of fullness during meals. Apple cider vinegar as a weight loss aid was among the most frequently searched health topics in 2017, according to Harvard Medical School. Research shows that apple cider vinegar with mother can help you lose weight. Happily, human studies show that vinegar can increase satiety (sense of being full), help you eat fewer calories, and hence, lose weight. For example, if people take vinegar along with a high-carb meal, they experience an increased feeling of fullness and ate an average range of 200–275 fewer calories for the rest of the day. Another study with 175 people with obesity showed that daily apple cider vinegar consumption led to reduced belly fat and weight loss.
15 mL (1 tablespoon): Lost 2.6 pounds, or 1.2 kilograms.
30 mL (2 tablespoons): Lost 3.7 pounds, or 1.7 kilograms.
Generally, the amount of apple cider vinegar recommended for daily use in most weight loss programs is about 1–2 tablespoons or 15-30 ml per day–diluted with water and drank or taken by teaspoonfuls before meals. Although recommendations for “dosing” vary, most apple cider vinegar diet adherents recommend taking about 1 to 2 teaspoons before meals to increase your sense of fullness during a meal.
Apple cider vinegar reduces fatty deposits. Studies in obese mice and rats suggest that acetic acid can prevent fat deposition and, maybe more importantly, improve their metabolism. According to Robert H. Shmerling, MD, the most widely quoted study of humans is a 2009 trial of 175 people “who consumed a drink containing 0, 1, or 2 tablespoons of vinegar each day. After three months, those who consumed vinegar had modest weight loss (2 to 4 pounds) and lower triglyceride levels than those who drank no vinegar.
Another study in the Journal of Functional Foods, which followed 39 adults, found that participants who consumed a tablespoon of ACV at lunch and dinner while cutting 250 calories per day lost 8.8 pounds in 12 weeks. In the control group, those who cut the same number of calories–but didn’t consume ACV–lost only 5 pounds.
In another study in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, 144 obese adults were randomly assigned to drink either a placebo or one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, those who drank two tablespoons had lost close to 4 pounds, while those who drank one tablespoon lost 2.5 pounds. (Those who drank the placebo actually gained a little bit of weight.)
Therefore, apple cider vinegar with mother seems to have properties that can support your weight loss efforts. A few studies—like this Science Direct Study and this examination of the antiglycemic properties—have found that drinking apple cider vinegar right before eating is linked to smaller post-meal blood sugar spikes. Nutrition researchers like Carol Johnston, PhD, who has studied the health effects of apple cider vinegar at Arizona State University for years, believes that compounds in the vinegar may interfere with the absorption of some starches.
Interruption in starch absorption and regulation of blood sugar levels matter. That’s because blood sugar highs and lows tend to lead to cravings for sugary and starchy snacks. “So if apple cider vinegar can help control blood sugar, this could help manage cravings and portion control, potentially leading to fewer calories consumed,” says dietitian Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD.
LOWERING CHOLESTEROL AND IMPROVING HEART HEALTH
Animal studies suggest that apple cider vinegar can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, along with several other heart disease risk factors. There are also studies showing that vinegar reduces blood pressure in rats, a major risk factor for heart disease–and kidney problems. A Harvard study showed that women who ate salad dressings with vinegar reduced their risk of heart disease. These types of studies can only demonstrate an association and can’t prove that the vinegar caused the reduction. However, with all the other obvious health benefits associated with apple cider vinegar, it’s certainly not harmful to add it to your regular diet. Its tangy and refreshing flavor is a bonus benefit.
KILLING HARMFUL BACTERIA
Vinegar helps kill pathogens, including bacteria. Traditionally, it has been used for cleaning and disinfecting around the home. Now we know that raw apple cider vinegar with mother can be used to treat nail fungus, warts, lice, and ear infections. Who would have thought? Hippocrates who is known as the father of modern medicine is said to have used vinegar for cleaning wounds over two thousand years ago. Obviously, vinegar has been used as a food preservative, and studies show that it inhibits bacteria such as E. coli from growing and spoiling food.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH MOTHER DETOX
Many people use a detox diet to begin changing their diet habits, eliminating the consumption of processed foods, and introducing healthier foods into their diets. A detox marks the beginning of a lifestyle change in one’s eating habits. The benefits people enjoy from an apple cider vinegar with mother detox regimen are both internal and external. They are recommended for some of the following benefits discuss already:
Giving the body a good dose of enzymes Increasing potassium intake Supporting a healthy immune system Helping with weight control Promoting pH balance in the body and skin Aiding with healthy digestion Adding good bacteria for the gut and immune function Helping remove “sludge toxins” from the body
How to do an apple cider vinegar detox
1 to 2 tablespoons of organic raw apple cider vinegar with mother.
8 ounces of purified or distilled water.
1 to 2 tablespoons sweetener (organic honey, maple syrup, or 4 drops of Stevia)
There are many variations of this basic drink include adding lemon juice while some recipes include a dash of cayenne pepper for some spice. With an apple cider vinegar detox, most drink it regularly for a set period of time, from several days to an entire month. Most commonly, those detoxifying choose to drink an apple cider vinegar combinations for three times each day: morning, midday, and evening. Because of the popularity of the apple cider vinegar diet, there are a plethora of recipes available online, but most follow the derivation of the basic mix described above. If that sounds distasteful to you, the following might be more to your taste because it included the added health benefits of raw honey.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey Drink Recipe:
1 cup water
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger, or ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 dash cayenne pepper

Health benefits of raw honey. Honey is a good source of antioxidants, contains an array of plant chemicals that act as antioxidants, has antibacterial and antifungal properties, assists in healing wounds, helps with digestive issues, soothes a sore throat, and can provide relief from local allergies when local honey is used.
Taking apple cider vinegar pills or tablets. If you don’t like the sound of drinking apple cider vinegar before meals, tablets of dehydrated apple cider vinegar are also sold commonly at most drug stores. A benefit of taking vinegar in pill or tablet form is that it protects the teeths’ enamel from the acidic properties that could corrode teeth.

Apple cider vinegar with mother isn’t just for salad dressing, either. The flavor of organic apple cider vinegar is known for its refreshing and bright tang. As a pantry ingredient, it goes well beyond vinaigrettes and dressings. It adds tang and low-calorie flavor to a wide variety of dishes you may not have considered. Spinach-Quinoa Bowls With Chicken and Berries

Slow Cooker Korean Beef In Cabbage Leaves
The possibilities are limited only by your imagination! And they’re all healthy.
A NATURAL BEAUTY PRODUCT
Balancing the skin’s pH
Apple cider vinegar with mother restores the skin’s pH balance because of its high acidic levels. It has a long history of cosmetic use and has been found in beauty products throughout the ages where the Romans used it as a skin toner, and Cleopatra is said to have used it to clean her delicate facial skin.
How to use: To make a Glowing Apple Cider Vinegar Toner, just combine 2 tbsp of raw organic apple cider vinegar like Bragg with 250ml water. Dilute the vinegar in the water and store in a sterilized bottle. After applying, wipe around your face with a little water and you shouldn’t be able to smell the vinegar anymore.
Treating acne.
Apple cider vinegar with mother is a triple threat as a potent and natural antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal substance. This makes it capable of keeping bacteria at bay and preventing pimples from forming. It works to reduce the levels of acne-causing bacteria while it exfoliates the dead skin cells that stay on your skin’s surface. As Dr. Zeichner notes, apple cider vinegar may also help treat or prevent blemishes.
How to use: Use a cotton swab to test first! Apply it to your jawline before your cheeks to make sure you don’t feel a “burning” sensation. “If the jawline reacts (red, burning, itchy after five minutes) then stop using it,” says Dr. Zeichner. “If not, apply a thin layer all over the face avoiding anything dripping on or around the eyes.”
Soothing and exfoliating your skin in the bath.
“The anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar soothe skin and the acetic acid softens skin,” explains Dendy Engelman, M.D., director of dermatologic surgery at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. “It contains alpha hydroxy acids that chemically exfoliate to remove dead skin buildup and reveal healthy new skin cells.”
How to use: It’s always a wise idea to dilute apple cider vinegar with water because concentrated apple cider vinegar may lead to skin inflammation. One simple way to reap the skin-soothing benefits is to simply pour some straight into your tub. In a regular-sized bathtub, add about one cup of apple cider vinegar with mother to warm water, and then blissfully soak! “This will help balance the pH levels of your skin, preventing it from becoming too oily or too dry,” says Dr. Engelman.
Hair care and dandruff.
“Apple cider vinegar has beneficial properties,” Dr. Neil Sadick, MD says. “It’s anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and also acidic.” He explains that the acidity of apple cider vinegar can help adjust the natural pH of the scalp to its optimal levels, and allow for gentle exfoliation of product buildup.
In fact, it comes in handy when fighting dandruff. “Dandruff is essentially your body’s inflammatory response to high levels of yeast that may grow on your scalp,” explains Joshua Zeichner, M.D., the director of cosmetic and clinical research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “Apple cider vinegar helps lower the amount of yeast growing on your scalp, which, in turn, helps protect against dandruff.”
How to use: Mix together equal parts of organic apple cider vinegar with water and apply to your scalp and hair right before you shampoo. If you’re not a fan of the smell of vinegar, you can add some to your shampoo bottle. That would mask the aroma entirely. Don’t leave it on your hair too long, though, and test first if your hair is color treated.
Tone oily skin and reduce fine lines.
Try apple cider vinegar with mother as an all-natural astringent, to remove dirt, oil and grime with just the swipe of a cotton pad. In addition to safely absorbing excess oil in the skin, apple cider vinegar will make your skin feel smoother, and it will help reduce fine lines.Vinegar is not recommended for use with dry or sensitive skin because of its
How to use: Dampen a cotton ball or round with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water, about one tablespoon for every two cups of water. Don’t worry about rinsing—by diluting the apple cider vinegar, it won’t cause irritation. In fact, it will leave your skin feeling refreshed and revitalized.
Reduce or neutralize annoying odors.
Thanks to its antiseptic properties, apple cider vinegar with mother can stave off the stench of smelly feet and help with athlete’s foot. Using on your armpits when you’re in a pinch will also reduce body odor.
How to use: Use about a ¼ to ¾ ratio of vinegar to water in a foot tub, and let your feet soak. The vinegar will also invigorate tired feet after a long day at work.
Soothing sunburn.
Because apple cider vinegar restores your skin’s pH levels, it works quickly to help reverse some of the damage caused by overexposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Remember, however, that nothing can undo sun damage, and it’s critical to use protective sunscreen and head gear.
How to use: You can use the bath method mentioned above or you can douse a diluted mixture onto a washcloth and apply directly onto your skin for all over body relief.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF USING APPLE CIDER VINEGAR EXCESSIVELY
Taking small amounts of apple cider is safe. Larger doses or long-term use could have risks, however. Taking apple cider vinegar at full strength over a long period of time could erode the enamel of the teeth and/or burn both the mouth and throat. For someone with diabetes, always consult a doctor about your use of apple cider vinegar to regulate blood sugar because it could actually worsen digestive problems depending on your use of other medications. .
Women with osteoporosis should be wary of apple cider vinegar. If used regularly, apple cider vinegar has been associated with reducing bone density. Because it can also alter insulin levels, people with diabetes should not use it without telling their doctors first.
People taking laxatives, diuretics, and medication for heart disease and diabetes should check with a doctor before using apple cider vinegar supplements.

Rick Holmstrom Interview: How The Hell Did I Get Here?
BY JORDAN MAINZER
The 13-year bandleader for Mavis Staples finally got a little time for himself--just not how he envisioned it. As the COVID-19 pandemic put a pause on Staples’ “never-ending tour,” as Rick Holmstrom told me over the phone earlier this year, he took advantage of his restlessness and recorded a new album, masked up, with other Staples bandmates Steve Mugalian and Gregory Boaz. See That Light, co-produced with Mugalian, was released in February and consists of many songs whose initial stages of writing occurred on the road with Staples, in hotels or on flights. “You listen to some music, you read the newspaper, you take a nap, and you still have two and a half hours of flight,” Holmstrom said, referring to the downtime that often spurred bouts of creativity. And Holmstrom’s open about how much what he’s listening to leaks into what he writes. “It’s part affliction and part blessing that my brain keeps replaying the last song I’ve heard,” he said. “If I’m in a Lightnin’ Hopkins or Mose Allison mode, it’s still playing an hour later in my head. I start jotting down something that’s like a twisted version of that, which morphs into a more twisted thing and doesn’t end up even sounding like the thing it’s inspired by.”
If you asked Holmstrom, he’d break down the exact process and many influences on each song on See That Light; he did so for many songs during our conversation, writing how he’s careful to make original music, often ditching voice memos after playing them for his band because they sound too much like something else. That said, the band often fiddled around in the studio to give it a twist, and especially Mugalian, who’s worked with Holmstrom for a long time and was in touring bands with him throughout the 90′s and 2000′s, listening to music over long distances, was sought as a source of feedback. Overall, though, as much as Holmstrom’s aware of the history behind each song--what he was listening to, what he was experiencing in life or referencing--he doesn’t expect the listener to do the same, taking into account the sequencing of the song tempos and grooves just as much if not more than the narrative. The album opens with empathetic funky strut “Take My Hand”, which he describes as a Snooks Eaglin groove combined with T-Bone Walker’s “The Hustle Is On” with a little MGs and Creedence in the solo. (“All of that stuff kind of came in piecemeal, and that’s a typical example of how this works for me,” he said.) Following it is upbeat rock chugger “Look Me In The Eye”, distorted “Losing My Shit”, and blues romp “Got To Go”, before the blue-eyed soul of “Don’t Wake Me” and slow-rolling “Lonesome Sound”. He once again changes tempo patterns with “I”d Rather Be A Loser”, and other songs like “Come Along” bounce around within their runtime. See That Light rewards if you dig in, but it’s a satisfying listen under any circumstance.
Read my conversation with Holmstrom below, edited for length and clarity.
Since I Left You: What about “Take My Hand”, “Losing My Shit”, and “Lonesome Sound” made you want to highlight them as early tastes of the record?
Rick Holmstrom: That’s a good question, because I’m terrible at that. I asked friends, “Which ones of these songs do you think are unique or have something going on that other people might like?” I have the tendency to get attached to all of them and lose perspective on which ones sound timely. I asked about 5 or 6 friends, and those seemed to be the ones that came up the most.
That’s the crazy thing, when you realize the record’s coming out in late February, it’s somewhere in October or November you’re deciding this stuff. It has to be put on Bandcamp or Spotify or Apple, and I wanted to have a video for each of them so I wanted to contact some friends of mine to help me with the videos. In the last couple of weeks, I was thinking, “Man I really screwed this up, I should have come out with ‘Losing My Shit’ first, and then ‘Lonesome Sound’, and then ‘Take My Hand’, since ‘Take My Hand’ is more of an upbeat song, and it felt like we got a new administration and we were getting past these last terrible four years. I was beating myself up for a couple weeks.
SILY: How did you approach the sequencing of the record?
RH: That’s interesting you asked that. I don’t think I’ve had an interviewer ask that question.
SILY: Really?!? That surprises me.
RH: Are you a musician yourself?
SILY: No, just an appreciator.
RH: That’s cool. I labored over it this time. I’ve made a bunch of records and produced a bunch of records, and in the past, I’d just say, “Here’s the order I think it should be,” and somebody at the record label would say, “That’s pretty good, maybe we should change this a bit here,” and I’d go, “Yeah, that’s cool.” Which is funny, because now it’s more of a singles world, yet I was laboring over this like it was the mid-70s and I was making some sort of concept record. The first sequence I had for a long time had the slowest, quietest song, “Don’t Wake Me”, as the opening song. I did that because it’s my favorite song on the record, and I had never done anything like it before, and it would open with a, “Wow, that’s different!” I sequenced the record, mastered it, and played it for my wife for the first time. She listens to the first song, turns to me in the car and asks, “That’s your first song?” I said, “Yeah, that’s it!” She said, “Okay, I like the song, but that’s the first one?” The more I started to think about it, the more I thought maybe that would be self-indulgent. Not to take it all too seriously here, but I felt like there was a little story of the characters here, messed up people who are struggling. There still should be an arc here, but you also have to think of the grooves and listening experience of those who aren’t tuned into stories right away.
SILY: I mostly asked because I thought the record was well-paced with song tempos, but it’s interesting to hear how you balanced a narrative with the desire to engage people from the basic sense of feeling a groove.
RH: I felt like there was a bit of a story where “Take My Hand” brings you in, somebody saying, “I’m having a tough time here, will you help me up?” And then you hear more detail, these people falling down these holes, struggling to get out. By the end, it’s like I’ve been such a jerk, asshole, and loser, and [then] at the very end it’s a hopeful thing. In a time when all of our work disappeared, and we were looking around wondering how we’d make ourselves useful, while we were making the record, the sequencing became important to me.
SILY: Another good choice would have been “Look Me In The Eye” because you sing, “These days I feel like screaming.” Is that referring to the last four years?
RH: That was actually originally way back in the record, and it’s an older song. When my wife heard that, she turned to me and said, “I know this is an older one because I’ve heard it before, but it feels like it could have been written yesterday.” I said, “Yeah, we included it because it somehow felt right.” The crazy thing about that one is that the inspiration for that song was Hank Williams. I was on a big Hank Williams kick. If you take that one back from the surf beat rock and roll groove we put to it, it’s a country song, which I hadn’t done before. I like country music, but I don’t really consider myself any kind of country artist or anything. I just like the songs.
SILY: “Got To Go” is a pretty funny song because of all the name-dropping. What’s your relationship with Chuck Prophet?
RH: [laughs] I’m glad you picked up on that. I sent the record to Chuck, and I said, “Even if you don’t like this, check out song number 4.” He wrote back, “Man, I feel like some kind of gangster rapper. I’m name dropped in a song!” Chuck heard a record I made years ago called Hydraulic Groove, around the time he was making “Summertime Thing”. We were both making records where we were using hip hop recording techniques, taking breakbeats, making loops, sampling, but I was really into rhythm & blues and soul music, and he was doing it with singer-songwritery Beck/Dylan type of stuff. He contacted me and we got to be friends. I played on a song of his called “Monkey in the Middle” on one of his records. Every time I go down to San Francisco for Hardly Strictly [Bluegrass], he invites me down to a club and I end up sitting in. I’m crazy about him as an artist and a personality. He’s one of the most interesting people I know.
That song is a Hank Thompson type of song. A story song. Basically a blues groove with slightly different changes, and I was just trying to have fun with it. The ludicrousness of some idiot who picks up a hotel clerk and takes her to see the bright lights in Fresno. It also has a little joke that we used to always be on the road and would always see a Denny’s right next to the La Quinta.
SILY: Is the song “I’m An Asshole” directed towards anyone or anything?
RH: Nah. It’s kind of a composite person. Just a few people I’ve known. We all run into them. That’s basically all it is. Having some fun with memories of people I’ve worked with I don’t have to work with again.
At the same time, many of these songs were written from the viewpoint of characters. They’re not strictly autobiographical. They’re partially from my own experience but mostly about folks who are struggling (much more than I am) with the world today, trying to figure out where they fit in, how they cope and move ahead. I was also having fun saying the word “asshole" in a song. In fact, I made a point of calling my mom before she heard the record, to tell her how I was inhabiting characters in many of these songs. I called Mavis too, just to let her know that a couple of these songs were, well, potty-mouthed, which she got a kick out of and understood. I mean, everyone’s been affected this past year. I think we forget sometimes how close we are to being in the same position as folks who are sleeping in tents under the freeway or rummaging through the trash bins in our alleys. So I think I was saying things they might say, like, “How the hell did I get here?”
SILY: The tempo changes within the song “Come Along” definitely stand out. How did that song come to be from start to finish?
RH: Because I come from the blues world, when I first started playing, I just fell in love with old blues music. I lucked out and was on the road with some touring blues acts, like William Clarke of Alligator Records. We toured like crazy. I was in vans that sometimes didn’t have seats in the back. We’d bring beanbags or lawn chairs. Just crazy stuff. Doing it just because I loved it. I come from the traditional world. Upright basses and old amplifiers. Now, what I’m more interested in is trying to find ways to subvert that but keep it intact at the same time. Blues, most people think of twelve bars, three chords. I’ll do things like try to not have a song have twelve bars. That arpeggio, soft beginning originally started as an idea for another song. One night--we used to play this club called Liquid Kitty in LA, every Sunday night when off the road with Mavis--it was 10 minutes from all of our houses. It was kind of like a residency: When we were home, we could play there, and it was a really nice place to try things out. There’s no pressure. Maybe you’d play a song twice in the same night, once in [each] set. Only the bartender’s gonna know. So these things got pieced together that way.
Just trying to find ways to take it somewhere else so it doesn’t become sports bar blues. You get a theater gig opening for somebody, or playing a rock club, you have songs that have little quirks like that, but a minute later, you’re playing this [Clarence] “Gatemouth” Brown, early 50′s, New Orleans or Houston shuffle, and people are like, “What the hell is this? This is cool!” And the next thing you know you’re going back to the weird quirky intro, and the song’s over. I don’t think what I’m doing is that great--it’s what I’m attempting to do. [laughs]
SILY: Ending a record with a slower track is definitely a good move a lot of the time. Is there something about “Joyful Eye” as opposed to some of the other slow songs on here that made you want to end with it?
RH: I think [it] was more the message of the song. There was a night when I was getting ready to go to one of those gigs at the Liquid Kitty. My youngest daughter was probably 2 years old. I’m bringing my guitars out into the garage, grabbing my amp, and you’re running a couple minutes late and trying to hurry to get your stuff in the car to go to the gig. Little Ellie looks up and said, “Daddy, see that light? What is that?” She’s pointing at a star or something, and I pick her up, and I’m looking at it with her, and I’m like, “I don’t know. It could be a star, satellite, plane?” “Well how do you know?” “I don’t know honey. There are a lot of things in life that just because I’m your dad I don’t know. I’m not sure.” Just trying to be honest with her. As I’m driving to the gig, I start humming something in relation to that, and at the end of the night, I just started playing this two-chord vamp and started singing part of that song. It was like a gig where at the end of the night, there might be five people in the bar. It was a vodka type of bar--I might have had a vodka. The bass player at the end of the night asked, “What was that thing you did, that was cool?” I told him the story, came up with a verse, and maybe the vodka helped me come up with a singalong thing, and we just jammed on that for a while. It was definitely one of those things that floated in and out of our sets and slowly accumulated more verses and became a song. At the beginning, it was a loopy, little dreamy, “What the hell was that?” kind of song. As far as putting it as the last song, it seemed like a more hopeful message, and we took it out of this Neil Young-era jam. I felt it was a good way to drift off.
SILY: Your daughter did the album art, too, right?
RH: Ellie, who is 14 now, our youngest, a couple years ago went to Italy with her aunt. She likes to paint in her room. Not long after she got back, she painted that for herself. I’ve had it sitting in my bedroom dresser drawer ever since. It’s the first thing I see when I wake up, and it makes me smile. A kid doing art for art’s sake. Just for fun. Wasn’t created for anything other than her to remember what Venice looked like to her. When we were thinking of how to do the artwork, I kept looking at the painting, took a photo of it, and sent it to the person helping me make the CDs. We just decided to go with that.
It’s not like anything where some art historian is gonna look at it. It just seemed like it fit in a weird kind of way. I hope people like it! My other daughter Lusa helped make the logo for the “record company” that this is coming out on.
SILY: What else is next for you?
RH: I’m working on some instrumentals right now. My first record came out in ‘96 on a label in New Orleans called Black Top Records. It was all instrumentals and has been 25 years. Once this record was done and in the pipeline and on its way, the singles being released, during the whole election and insurrection craziness, I started to get antsy and feel weird. The record gave me and the guys a sense of something to do and purpose. We were doing something creative. It felt good. I started to lose that around the holidays, so I’ve been working on a lot of guitar instrumentals. I’m hoping that’ll turn into a record sometimes soon. I think it probably will. We did record one instrumental during the See That Light sessions, and it’s a good one, but I decided to hold it back. It’s a part of what I do live. A lot of times we’ll start off with an instrumental or two, then I’ll sing three or four songs, then we’ll do another instrumental. They’re short, kind of quirky, and palate cleansers in the show. Because we’re a trio, it gives you a chance to break the show up and make it more dynamic.
It’s a challenge for me. I like doing both of those things. I like writing songs with words and stories, but also writing with my guitar with a band to make a three-minute instrumental song that captures imaginations and have it be a fun little ride.
SILY: What have you been listening to, watching, and reading lately?
RH: I’ve really been on a big Hi Records kick lately. I’ve got Apple Music so that my kids can get whatever they want, and I’ve been getting Ann Peebles, O.V. Wright, Al Green, and all that stuff. I just read this book called Sapiens that was really interesting. I’ve been reading Rachel Maddow’s book Bag Man about Spiro Agnew. It was so Trump, so many decades ahead of Trump. I don’t watch a whole lot. I’d like to be able to watch more movies and be a movie buff, but I find myself, especially with kids, not having the time right now.

Natter #3 6/24/2020
So, on Saturday morning, I took part of my breakfast (yogurt) from our backup fridge in the garage, but when I put the first spoonful in my mouth I noticed that it was warm. Strange that. So I checked the backup fridge and found that everything in it was warm. The freezer contents - weren't.This was a disaster as I had been to QFC a couple of days previously buying frozen and fresh foods including four half-gallons of milk. Jean had been out the day after for the first time in 12 weeks and part of her haul was more milk and ice cream. I imagine that the excitement of being out again at last and back to her old stamping grounds overcame memory. But forgetting it's date made me think back to those 'Old House days' and what we were about then - those days and other old days that preceded that time. Still firmly in my mind is the Co-op number I had to recite to the driver when we had milk or groceries delivered - 157376. Being horses, they would leave proof of their passage along the road and my Dad would pay me a shilling per bucket full of 'Golden Apples' as my Dad referred to this natural function It seemed like it was too demeaning a job for a full-grown adult and using his term was sort of distancing himself from the unpleasantness. I wrote to Irmgard to tell her that at last I was able to come over to see her, not being really sure of my reception as I hadn't written for ages. Within days I had a reply and although she was totally delighted that I was coming she told me that she had become engaged. I have been occupying some of my evenings on the computer lately sorting and printing out the Natters that Jo & Tom, Carin and Janet have been good enough to get to me. But I am getting there slowly and tonight (Monday) I completed taking off hard copies. Now I can sort through, putting them in chronological order and see what I shall see. The Jasmine was an insignificant rooted cutting, from where, I have no recollection. As soon as it looks like there might be leaves on “Empress Woo” that might be reaching terminal size, they disappear and I am beginning to think that I will have to curtail totally growing the items they obviously consider their personal snack bar. So next year we might actually be able to eat something we have grown once more. 'Haven't been able to do that for the last four years now, except for Onions and Garlic! Got started on removing existing plants today so we might have the new bed up and running before too long with any luck. I think it was the hardest day's work I have done for ages and I had to have a nap in the afternoon, but I couldn't tell whether that was because I had two early start days or the sheer grind of lifting heavy plants. You have likely realised that I am just stumbling along here so I will finish and get to bed.
You fearless and weary leader.Gordon
PS Jill had a change of mind just following this and the bed we cleared was ordered replanted - and not with veggies or fruit either. Got to find another place - perhaps a PeaPatch again?

How Much Milk Does A Goat Produce?
Having goats on a farm is kind of joy and happiness to a lot of farmers as they are playful, curious and very intelligent. Raising goats for milk is an absolutely amazing investment as the nutrient in goat milk is known to be better than cow milk.
So, how much milk does a goat produce? Let’s see the answer in this article.
Health benefits of goat milk
Many people may not be aware that goat milk is quite similar to human. It’s been the primary source of milk in a lot of developing countries thanks to its health benefits and taste.
Additionally, compared with cow milk, goat milk enables easier digestion for babies as it can heal cow milk allergy which usually occurs when parents add cow milk to their babies’ diet, causing problems, even deaths to many infants.
For further information related to the nutritional value of goat milk in comparison with cow and human milk, you can refer to the table below from America Dairy Goat Association.
Comparison of average milk composition Nutrient Human Cow Goat Energy (kcal/100 ml) 68.00 69.00 70.00 Lactose (%) 7.30 4.70 4.10 Protein (%) 1.10 3.50 3.20 Fat (%) 4.00 3.60 3.80 Cholesterol (mg/100 ml) 20.00 15.00 12.00 Ash (%) 0.20 0.70 0.80 Calcium (%) 0.04 0.18 0.19 Phosphorous (%) 0.06 0.23 0.27 Iron (%) 0.20 0.06 0.07 Vitamin A (IU/g fat) 32.00 21.00 39.00 Vitamin D (IU/g fat) 0.30 0.70 0.70 Vitamin C (mg/100 ml) 3.00 2.00 2.00 Thiamin (μg/100 ml) 17.00 45.00 68.00 Riboflavin (μg/100 ml) 26.00 159.00 210.00
Judging from the table, the energy content in goat, cow and human is quite the same. However, the lactose content of goat milk is lower than the others, which lets it be the alternative for those who have digestive problems upon consuming cow milk.
By the way, there is a higher level of beneficial fatty acids which support digestion. Among the 3 types of milk, goat milk contains the highest level of phosphorus, which is the reason why it’s the choice of vegetarian people who usually have fruits and vegetables in their diet.
It’s more interesting to know that goat milk comprises the similar content of calcium and vitamin D to cow milk. The level of vitamin A in goat milk is twice as much as cow’s milk, and it’s very rich in riboflavin (Vitamin B2) good for human growth.
Thanks to all those potential health benefits that goat milk brings about, it’s been popularly consumed by over 65% of the world’s population.
Other uses of goat milk
Because goats are excellent browsers who seek good and fresh parts of plants to feed on, their diet has a great effect on the aromatic and nutty flavour of milk. This has enabled a lot of farmers and businessmen to discover new ways of processing goat milk instead of only consuming and selling fresh milk.
Some may have it for shakes, smoothies, and ice-cream, or as the ingredient to make a latte. In cooking, it can be used for oats, soups or sauces. Especially, the most well-known products from goat milk might be cheese, whereas there are some unique brands of goat milk soap.
So, how many litres of milk does a goat produce per day? Let’s find out the answer in the next part.
How much milk does a goat produce?
Does commonly give around 6-12 lbs. of milk per day. Does are known to produce a significant amount of milk that they can nurse the kids, and give an adequate amount of milk to humans at the same time. Nevertheless, the amount of milk produced varies upon a lot of factors such as the diet, the care, or the housing condition.
A doe only gives milk after giving birth, so the first condition to have milk is to get your doe bred once a year, which means you must have a buck. Normally, the lactation period will last for around 9 to 10 months, with the peak production in 4 to 6 weeks after kidding. During this peak period, it’s sometimes possible to milk a doe 3 times per day.
However, after the peak production period, the amount of milk produced slowly decreases, which is the reason why your goats should be milked every 12 hours to maintain productivity.
A lot of experienced farmers may claim that how they take care of the goats matter the most. If a goat is happy, fed enough, kind and gentle, it can potentially give a lot of fresh milk. Depending on the level of goat milk production per day, goats can be divided into 4 types below.
Low producer: around 2 quarts (4 lbs) per day. Finished after 6 months.
Modest producer: 2 quarts (4 lbs) a day for the period of 10 months.
Good producer: 3 quarts (6 lbs) per day for 10 months. Approximately 1,800 lbs per year.
Super-goat: 5-7 quarts (10-14 lbs) per day during the peak period. Around 2,000 lbs a year.
Moreover, various dairy goat breeds may have different productivity. Let’s see the table below for more information about the production of the 6 most popular dairy goat breeds.
Breed Average production (lbs/lactation) Production range (lbs/lactation) Features Nubian 1,820 560-4,270 Richer in butterfat. Saanen 2,577 610-5,490 Lower level of butterfat. LaMancha 2,100 740-4,320 Fine dairy. Toggenburg 2,115 940-4,380 Long lactation period. Alpine 2,266 790-5,470 Oberhasli 2,146 930-4,450
Fun fact: Does which have twins are likely to produce more milk than others.
Nutrition for dairy goats
Another factor that plays a crucial role in the quantity and quality of goat milk is the nutritional diet. The first thing that you need to always bear in mind is the balance of energy, protein, minerals and vitamins in everyday diet. Because goats are ruminants, cellulose, usually from forage – hay or pasture plants, is the main source of their diet.
To reach the most potential goat milk production per day, you are advised to follow those requirements in the regular diet.
1. Grain mixture
Should contain minerals and vitamins.
1 lb. per day for every 2 quarts (4 lbs.) of milk produced.
Provide adequate energy and protein, especially during the lactation.
Should be limited because feeding a lot of grain with low fibre can lead to digest disorder and low-fat content in goat milk.
2. High-grade leafy alfalfa hay
Does will eat all. In case of the lack of hay, alfalfa pellets can be the alternative.
3. Water
Does will drink all.
4. Salt
Offered freely.
5. Supplements
This can be plant mixtures from carrots, kale, apples or peas, however, they should be fed as the supplement, not the main diet, and limited in amount.
How to milk a goat?
After learning about how to take care of good quality milk, you will have to know how to milk a goat and how to store the milk for the best quality, avoiding any medical problems later on.
Milking area: Clean and dry, away from the dust of housing and roads which might get into the milk.
Before milking: Wash and disinfect the doe’s udder and the milker’s hands with warm water, then dry thoroughly.
Procedure:
Step 1: Hold the top of the teat with your thumb and forefinger to push the milk out of the teat.
Step 2: Close your other fingers, forcing the milk out slowly and steadily. Remember not to SQUEEZE. Be gentle. The first stream can’t be used as it contains a high level of bacteria.
Step 3: Repeat the process with the other hand. Continue until you see the milk flow stop.
Step 4: Filter the warm milk properly, and cool it immediately by placing the container in ice water for 15-20 minutes. Then, refrigerate the milk.
Conclusion
Is it incredible to learn about the great nutritional value of goat milk, and that goat milk is perfect for those having lactose reactions like me? How many litres of milk does a goat produce per day? It is a more surprising fact, right? Whatever your purpose of having a goat is, remember that goats are lovely and surely, if you treat them well and properly, you will have your fruit one day.

Do you play with any golfers that don’t use some type of shot monitoring or sport enchancment gadget? Not in your nelly. (Translation: That’s British for NOPE)
So think about then, a watch that mixes all of it. A digital caddie (after which some) in your wrist that additionally has the power to care for your entire non-golf wants. It’s good to see your stress rating and hydration degree in your wrist whereas doing the laundry or sitting within the board room, proper? Sounds good, signal me up.
The Garmin Marq Golfer watch may be yours for the extraordinarily un-alarming value of $1,850.
Product Knowledgeable
Hello, I’m Harry, and I take a look at lots of issues at MyGolfSpy. I play professionally after I’m not checking and evaluating specs on gloves, rangefinders, baggage.. ball retrievers.. and so on. You possibly can name me the Director of Gentle Items Testing right here at MGS. You can too simply name me Harry, that’s advantageous too.
Why the Hype?
Information is energy. Golfers are making the most of the advantages of shot monitoring gadgets that empower them to strategize and perceive the weaknesses of their sport. There’s loads of hype round many of those gadgets, however how a lot dough is an excessive amount of dough?
$1,850 is greater than a mortgage cost for a few of us. So far as I’m involved, this factor higher repair me breakfast, stroll the canine, flirt with my spouse, and whereas it’s at it wipe my ass too. Primarily I needed to search out out if the Garmin Marq Golfer is earth shattering sufficient to justify a price ticket that equates itself to the Rolex of golf watches.
The place The Hype is Coming From?
Garmin is a family identify within the GPS world. Expectations are excessive for something Garmin produces.
The Garmin Marq is definitely an unique household of watches, through which the Garmin Marq Golfer is one among 5 elite smartwatches.
It’s made from premium supplies (titanium and ceramic)
Greg Norman is a model ambassador.

Assessing the Hype
First issues first, what sort of gadget aficionado are you? For instance, I exploit my cellphone to textual content, name, take photos and scroll social media. My tremendous fancy cellphone in all probability has options and is able to issues that I don’t even learn about. If you happen to’re like me, the Garmin Marq Golfer is likely to be overkill. It’s not out of the realm of chance that a few of its MANY options would possibly go to waste for those who don’t enroll in night time lessons to catch up.
Nonetheless, for those who use your FitBit or related watch to trace your pulse to have the ability to confidently say you’re nonetheless alive, you would possibly discover the Garmin Marq Golfer to be precisely what you’ve been ready for. Now your on a regular basis watch can also be your golf watch.
Regardless of which sort of tuned-in expertise consumer you might be, the Marq Golfer is fairly freakin cool and spectacular.
It comes pre-loaded with 41,000 programs. Greater than doubtless, your house course is one among them. After you’ve taken a have a look at the outlet structure, the digital caddie provides you membership solutions based mostly on shot information from earlier rounds. The Marq Golfer detects wind route and gives a hazard view. You possibly can pair the watch with included monitoring sensors to log each stroke together with places, distances and membership sort. It accounts for uphill and downhill pictures. The battery lasts for 12 days… The listing goes on and on.
I wore the Garmin Marq Golfer in various my most up-to-date rounds and it does precisely what it says on the tin. Garmin actually delivered a implausible piece of expertise. That being mentioned, I had the sluggish police proper on my bumper. The Garmin Marq Golfer is so characteristic wealthy that you possibly can spend ages learning and analyzing what membership to make use of, calculating the wind over a hazard and peeking on the inexperienced structure. In any case of that, you overlook that you simply nonetheless have to truly swing the membership. I admire a pleasant tip right here and there however I don’t need my watch to take the shot for me. For me, it lends to overthinking and seems to be extra of a distraction than a assist.
“Harry, you don’t have to make use of all of the options, slim it right down to those you want and ignore the others”, you the reader says to me condescendingly.
Dang it, if I paid $1,850 for something I’m getting each penny out of it and I haven’t even dug in to every part it does off the golf course. I didn’t have time to hit the slopes and take a look at out the Backcountry Ski Enter.. YES IT DOES THAT TOO!! But when I used to be capable of finding a mountaintop to slip down in July, the Navigation device would have safely guided me there, flip by flip. IT… NEVER… STOPS. I now stay inside this machine. It’s me, I’m it. I’m watch. I really like lamp.
Does it Reside Up To the Hype?
The Backside Line
I’m giving this a reasonably excessive rating on the hype meter. It’s not over-hyped as a result of Garmin delivered what it mentioned it was going to ship. The options work seamlessly, the course mapping is high quality, the expertise is prime of the road. The actual figuring out issue? Is it value $1,850? It appears like loads for a sensible watch. I utterly perceive your sticker shock. However for those who add up the worth of every of the options of a way of life watch, train/recreation watch, and golf GPS.. you’re knocking on the door. And, it’s not the most costly luxurious golf watch in the marketplace. (Google TAG Heuer Linked Golf Version..) Due to this fact I deem the hype justified and provides it a four out of 5. Props to you Garmin.
I don’t need to urge you to purchase simply because I feel it’s definitely worth the hype. It comes with a disclaimer. If you happen to’re like me and are even remotely questioning whether or not you’d make the most of all of the options.. DON’T TAKE THE PLUNGE. It’s not value your cash for those who don’t use it to its fullest talents. I wouldn’t contact it with a 10 foot pole, and that’s not simply because my spouse would kill me. I wouldn’t profit from every part it has to supply and I do know I’d be so overwhelmed with data that my sport would endure.
The Backside Line is, that is for the information/gadget geek or frivolous millionaire watch collector. If the latter is you, the full line of Garmin Marq Restricted Version watches is offered for a straightforward $10,000.

7 Surprising Superfoods to Look for This Spring Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Eating locally grown foods comes with a bounty of benefits, from fresher foods to saving both money and the environment. One 2007 study from the University of Alberta, Canada, determined that the transportation alone of organic produce actually causes an environmental impact large enough to cancel out many of its benefits.1 If you look, you’ll find that most of the organic fruit and vegetables in your local grocery store come from much farther away than your conventional produce. Fresh produce in most regions of the U.S. actually travel between 1,500 to 2,000 miles on the road. That’s even higher than processed foods, which are shipped an average of 1,346 miles.2 Eating locally grown foods helps eliminate a substantial amount of the carbon footprint associated with food transportation. Eating locally automatically means eating what’s in season. This spring, consider adding some of the following superfoods,3 many of which you may never have heard of before. Most of these are only available for a short amount of time, and now’s the time to start looking for them. No. 1: Morel Mushrooms Morel mushrooms, the tops of which resemble small shower loofahs, are packed with immune-boosting, disease-preventing vitamin D. Its taste has been described as umami, or savory. Rarely cultivated, morel mushrooms are typically wild-harvested and picking the mushrooms is a popular tradition for many. That said, avoid picking mushrooms in the wild unless you are absolutely sure you know what you're picking. There are a number of toxic mushrooms, including a species called “false morels,” and it's easy to get them confused unless you have a lot of experience and know what to look for. As noted in a recent study,4 “Morels have been in use in traditional medicine for centuries, due to their health-related benefits, and current research demonstrated their anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory bioactivities, in addition to immunostimulatory and antitumor properties.” Most of the health benefits have been attributed to polysaccharides, along with a number of phytochemicals, primarily phenolic compounds, tocopherols, ascorbic acid and vitamin D. Morel mushrooms are an excellent addition cooked with any side dish and go great with all kinds of meat and fish. Many people enjoy eating them as a side dish on their own, gently sautéed for five to 10 minutes with a pat of butter. Never eat morel mushrooms raw, as they contain trace amounts of a toxin that make some people ill. No. 2: Fiddlehead Ferns Chances are you’ve never heard of fiddlehead ferns5,6 unless you’re a frequent visitor of farmers markets and specialty health food stores. As the name implies, the small curly discs are picked from immature, uncoiled ostrich ferns. The taste has been likened to that of asparagus, but with bit more crunch and bitterness. Others say they taste like a mix of asparagus, spinach and broccoli all in one. High in antioxidants (twice the amount of blueberries) and plant-based omega-3, fiddlehead ferns are a potent anti-inflammatory food.7 They also contain vitamins A and C, both of which are important for healthy vision and immune function. Iron and phosphorous aid red blood cell production and are important for healthy formation of cell membranes and bone, while potassium supports heart health and electrolyte and muscle functions. Fiddleheads are commonly picked in Maine and Canada, but can often be found in health food stores. Their season is quite brief — two to three weeks at the most. To ensure quality, look for specimens that have tightly coiled heads with stems about 2 inches in length. If picking your own, make sure you know how to identify ostrich ferns, as they are commonly confused with bracken fern — a species known to cause cancer in lab animals. Also, fiddleheads may cause gastrointestinal upset when consumed raw, so light cooking, just as you would asparagus, is recommended. They can also be pickled for longer shelf life. For instructions, see this spicy pickled fiddleheads’ recipe by The Spruce.8 The following video will help you properly identify edible fiddleheads from the ostrich fern. Consider adding them to dishes that normally call for asparagus. Many recipes suggest eating them steamed or boiled with hollandaise sauce, cooked then chilled and topped with plain mayo, or lightly sautéed and tossed with some butter, lemon, vinegar and Parmesan cheese. No. 3: Cherimoya This heart-shaped “dragon-scaled” tropical fruit has a sweet, buttery inside. Select specimens that are hard and green. As avocados, cherimoyas ripen quickly on the counter. Once the skin turns a bronze color and feels soft to the touch, it’s ready to eat. Simply peel and slice. Their flavor has been likened to a combination of banana, papaya and pineapple. Pureed, they can also be added to smoothies. A single fruit contains approximately 60 percent of the daily recommended dose of vitamin C and a third of your vitamin B6 needs. In Mexico, the fruit has traditionally been used to ease anxiety, thanks to the presence of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which has mild antidepressive effects. It’s also high in fiber, iron and niacin, and contain powerful compounds shown to combat cancer, malaria and human parasites. Cherimoya provides high amounts of potassium that help control heart rate and blood pressure. Furthermore, it contains more minerals weight per weight than a lot of more common fruits, including apples. No. 4: Sorrel Sorrel, also known as spinach dock or narrow-leaved dock, is a perennial leafy herb cultivated around the world. Packed with health benefits and a tangy, lemony flavor, it adds a bit of zing to just about any salad or dish, including creamy soups. One cup of sorrel provides more than your daily requirement of vitamins A and C, along with high amounts of potassium and iron. Keep in mind that sorrel contains oxalic acid, which is contraindicated for those struggling with or prone to oxalate kidney stones. For most people, small quantities are completely safe and provide valuable health benefits. According to Organic Facts:9 “The health benefits of sorrel include its ability to improve eyesight, slow the aging process, reduce skin infections, strengthen the immune system, and improve digestion. It also builds strong bones, increases circulation, increases energy levels, helps prevent cancer, lowers blood pressure, increases appetite, protects against diabetes, strengthens heart health and improves kidney health.” No. 5: Stinging Nettles While typically considered a pesky and painful weed, stinging nettles10 have unique health benefits. (On a side note, should you have them growing in your yard, they’re actually a sign of rich, healthy soil.) Just make sure you use gloves during handling until they’ve been cooked, to avoid a painful rash. Once blanched or sautéed, they can be safely consumed, providing healthy amounts of vitamin K and calcium. Traditionally, nettles have been valued for its blood purifying properties, and can also be made into tea, said to ease congestion and soothe allergies and asthma. Nettle tea may also boost milk production if you’re nursing, and helps stimulate your digestive glands, including your intestines, liver, pancreas and gallbladder. To learn more about the health benefits of stinging nettles and the various ways you can use it (including instructions for making nettle tea), see “Nettle: The Stinging Weed That Can Help You Detoxify.” No. 6: Purslane Purslane11 (also called duckweed, fatweed, pigweed, pusley, verdolaga, ma chi xian in Chinese, munyeroo or wild portulaca), is the omega-3 powerhouse of the vegetation kingdom, and there's a high probability it's growing in your yard right now. According to Mother Earth News, it's the most reported weed species in the world.12 Purslane looks very much like a miniature jade plant, with fleshy succulent leaves and reddish stems. The stems grow flat to the ground and radiate outward from a single taproot, sometimes forming large, flat circular mats up to 16 inches across. In about mid-July, it develops tiny yellow flowers about one-quarter inch in diameter. Seeds of purslane are extremely tough, some remaining viable in the soil for 40 years, and it can grow in almost anything, from fertile garden loam to the most arid desert soil — even in your rock driveway. Just be very careful not to confuse purslane with spurge, because they can look similar, and spurge will make you sick. The following video shows how to tell them apart. Purslane has a stellar omega-3 fatty acid profile, compared to other vegetables, containing anywhere from 300 to 400 milligrams (mg) of omega-3 per cup. It also contains six times more vitamin E than spinach, seven times more beta carotene than carrots, providing about 44 percent of your daily vitamin A needs per 100 grams,13 25 mg of vitamin C per cup, plus magnesium, calcium, iron, riboflavin, potassium, phosphorous and manganese. Purslane can be eaten either raw or cooked. If you're planning on eating raw purslane, make sure no pesticides or herbicides have been used nearby. If you’ve been spraying Roundup in your yard, never eat weeds collected from the area. Also avoid them if your neighbor has used Roundup in their yard, as the chemicals can easily drift across property lines. As a precaution, wash the leaves and stems thoroughly before consuming. Typically, people eat the young purslane leaves and stems to avoid the tougher parts of the plant. For cooked purslane, there are numerous ways to incorporate this herb in your favorite dishes. You can boil it in water for 10 minutes and drain, or simply add it to other recipes to give the dish an added crunch. No. 7: Ramps Ramps is a type of wild leek, featuring small white bulbs with hairy roots. While resembling green onions in appearance, their flavor is more akin to garlic. If you’re lucky enough to find them, be sure to get some. Ramps are exceedingly scarce as they’re a slow grower, and are only in season for a few weeks in spring. Look for specimens that are firm, with bright green leaves. Don’t buy or use them if you notice brown spots or slimy areas. Unwashed and wrapped in a plastic bag, ramps can be refrigerated for up to a week. Ramps are a good source of vitamins A and C, selenium and chromium, the latter of which helps stabilize blood sugar. As for how to use them in your cooking, Organic Authority suggests:14 “[U]se ramps as you would scallions, green onions or leeks. Anything that would pair well with garlic or leeks will love the ramp. Slice them thinly and use sparingly, and also handle them gently, adding them at the end of the cooking process. Think simple to allow ramps to shine: Scrambled into eggs, garnished alongside seafood, mixed into big bowls of pasta, or oven roasted or grilled to perfection.” How to Find Locally-Grown Food That Is in Season When you eat locally grown foods, the contents of your shopping bag inevitably change with each passing season.
