Two things have been on my mind: 1. Grace being a Monster Hunter makes sense for his affiliations, and yet the profession about becoming an inhuman apex predator feels strange for the mild mannered guy. I wonder, what does he think of his job and what it’s made of him? 2. If nonconsensual consumption of red honey is a new horror for Twitch, I wonder what they think of consensual caging, like on Titania in Sunless Skies. Choosing to undergo harvest or to eat “ethically sourced” honey must be bizarre, considering how it’s produced in the Neath. (submitted by @noblevagrant65 )
(i'm so sorry i missed this i didn't realise you don't get notifications for submissions on mobile!!) for grace:
i wish i had more interesting answers bc this is such an interesting question!! but sadly i only chose monster hunter bc of the job affiliations & main skills....annoyingly none of the ingame careers really fit grace at all!! so i don't think he really has the job in his Canon--only ingame for the item/gameplay
but thinking on making it fit somehow, i could see him having an interest in zee life? mostly out of resourcefulness for when he's on twitch's ship-what monsters are edible for when supplies are low, which ones are too dangerous to fight, what's the best place to shoot them with cannons, which ones do they need to keep twitch away from, that kind of thing.
but that doesn't make him much of a hunter still...just kind of a Guy With Knowledge. but maybe that knowledge just makes him a weird kind of monster "hunter" that knows how to get rid of monsters without jumping onto their back with a harpoon. the current fluke event has an option where you soothe the fluke with music instead of shooting it--maybe he just works in that way instead. that makes a Lot more sense to me
but sadly as cool as it would be he is very much not a peligin eyed human apex predator and i don't think he ever will be--i don't think it's changed him much! he can't go out for drinks with the other monster hunters bc he would look so out of place
and for twitch & the skies cages:
oh they would Hate the idea of consensual red honey, and anyone who takes it or agrees to be harvested for it. thy don't care how many excuses people make, there's no reason for red honey to exist bc there's no way for it to exist without suffering.
i can't figure out how exactly they would feel about the people signing up to be harvested--honestly they might flat out refuse to believe it. a "no surely you were coerced somehow into being here, there's no way anybody would want to go through this" kind of thing
other options are Angry, Disgusted, Outraged that they would willingly carry on the cycle that leads to making red honey. i don't think there would be any pity or compassion about what might make someone consider doing that to themselves--they'd be too caught up in their own anger about it (and considering in skies it's just artists trying to suffer for their art twitch would think they're selfish awful people)
their opinion would be: burn the entire place down, or stay so far away from it thy never have to think about it ever again
#submission#inquiries#noblevagrant65#these were interesting to think about thank you!!! >:3#hopefully they are coherent bc i am very tired#long post#londonmusings

Electronic Arts Q1 2024 Earnings Conference Call (August 1st)
This happened today and Dragon Age was mentioned in the opening Prepared Remarks section of the call (emphasis mine):
"To do more extraordinary things for our people, players and communities, our teams are building the strongest pipeline in the history of EA to drive multi-year growth. Over the next few years, we will launch numerous experiences that grow and deepen the fandom of our legendary IP. Our multi-year targeted investments toward our biggest opportunities include global titles like blockbuster storytelling from Dragon Age, incredible skateboarding gameplay and social connection from skate, and a revival of EA SPORTS College Football that celebrates the action, culture and tradition of the sport like never before. We’re also hard at work on a new experience from The Sims that will transform what players can do with creativity, a sprawling action adventure Iron Man game, a reimagination of Battlefield as a truly connected ecosystem, and the expansion of the Apex Legends universe across platforms, geographies, and modalities of play. The most recent reveal of our Black Panther project — set in a massive, explorable universe — marks the latest chapter in EA’s collaboration with The Walt Disney Company and the Marvel Games team."
[source and full Prepared Remarks transcript]
Dragon Age was then mentioned during the Q&A section of the call (emphasis mine):
Q: "Last quarter it was noted that players were concentrating their spend on major franchises. Just wanted to see first if there was any update to that? And then, Andrew, in your commentary you highlighted a goal for Apex as an experience across platforms, I'm assuming that includes mobile as well, so can you speak to how you envision potentially relaunching that title on phones and how the approach could differ to the prior game? Thank you." A: "Yeah, so let me touch on the first part. I do think we continue to see big titles getting bigger, and live services getting bigger, and certainly as a company with a broad portfolio of large-scale IP and large-scale live services, we believe that we will be long-term beneficiaries of that trend. You know, that doesn't mean that we won't build smaller titles over the course of time. There are these incredible stories that we believe should be told in the context of entertainment. We are focusing our investment so that we can build a cost-base around those that's appropriate, but we're also really getting behind our biggest opportunities, and as we've talked about, our strategy and building these experiences that entertain massive online communities. Our expectation is that will be a large scale growth driver for us. But, you know, when thought about the right way, games like, you know, Dragon Age, and Jedi, can tell truly blockbuster stories and really break into that top category of games. I think what we see today is the mid-tier and lower games that, you know, maybe did pretty well through Covid because people had a lot of spare time - they're the part of the industry that really aren't doing and performing as well. And as we think about our future, you should expect that we'll continue to focus our investments and our energy and our resources against these big opportunities because we do believe that is where the industry is trending."
[source: call audio webcast]
There were no further mentions of Dragon Age, Mass Effect or BioWare during the call.
Here is the latest Existing Live Services & FY24 Title Slate (announced titles), from the call's supporting documents -

The next EA earnings conference call - for Q2 2024 - is on November 1st 2023 at 2pm PT.

one thing i really like about Apex now is that they got rid of the stupid overwatch core "offense defense support" categories in favour of something that makes more sense for the battle royale gameplay
assault are offense and push oriented, skirmisher are mobility oriented, recon are enemy marking and targeting oriented, support are team assistance oriented and controller are crowd and location control oriented
all of these categories are excellent describers of what to expect in a battle royale game (respectively: pushing, getting around the map, marking enemies, helping your teammates and controlling the territory). they can bounce of each other and you can pretty much mix and match anyone. you can even pick three of the same category and win, but the way they encourage balance better with this new system rather than the previous one is really good

finally looked at arknights: endfield trailer and gameplay demo and honestly. not too hyped on it.
in my eyes, it looks like apex legends (good) mixed with genshin impact (bad).
i like the theme of an alien planet and i think the map being showcased is interesting, but the gameplay and otherwise visual look isn't appealing to me. the character designs so far are quite bland, and the combat style doesn't seem that unique, even if the character cut in animations are cool. i think the ui is very arknights-esque and i like it but it's hard to gauge how interesting the gameplay and story will be outside of combat.
but the map. i won't lie, i like scifi planets and such. the stone and grass and a huge spreading illness of a sort and huge new tech facilities very much make me think of apex legends, especially the maps broken moon and world's edge.
this facility area immediately reminded me of the production yard area from apex legends' broken moon map.
i couldn't find a better pic but the area looks exactly like the entrance area to production yard (pictured is the area facing a cliff)
another note; the broken moon map in apex has zip rails you can use to travel from fixed points. endfield has a similar lift that you can place and move in.
i'm not actually annoyed by these similarities, i just think they are funny.
but it is kind of unfortunate that arknights is moving from their unique, a bit mishmashed style to more uniform and what has become more "standard" way of "mobile" gaming that genshin impact has inadvertently caused. i don't think main game arknights is going to reach it's end anywhere soon but i wish endfield had more the things i like about terra's arknights. i've been a huge fan of liduke for many years (probably since amagi release on azur lane) and i am a bit dissapointed, though the blame isn't on a singular artist because there's limits and expectations.
we'll see what future updates hold but i am not greatly hyped for the game aside from seeing the map more.
#when there's more footage; if i have time and energy i'll scout side-by-side screenshots from apex because damn they look alike#arknights endfield

"My stream looks bad."
This is a pretty common issue that creators face and it all stems from one common misconception: 1080p doesn't mean quality.
The above video is in fact 1080p, but as you can see there's definitely something wrong about it. Here's that exact same freezeframe but at 480p:
So what's happening here? Bitrates.
A Crash Course Through Video Compression
Computer video has historically been a really hard problem to solve. Computers used to be slow (Like, really slow). Computer scientists (read: nerds) figured out that the human eye is bad and have developed techniques that abuse this fact.
Dithering tricks your eye into "seeing" more colors than are actually present. Here's a monotone (two colors!) that appears to also have shades of grey even though there aren't any:
Pretty cool, eh? By using clever placement of the black dots an entire range of grays emerge even though there aren't any.
You can even throw out little bits of detail to save space and the eye will be none the wiser. These are the core principles behind video compression.
Why do we even need to compress video anyways?
The short answer: internet speeds still aren't fast enough. The long answer: distribution costs.
If you are a video site, such as Twitch or YouTube, it is in your best interests to save as much money as possible for every live stream. So, every platform places limits on bitrate.
Okay, get to the point already. What is bitrate and how do I get my stream to look good?
Video compression usually has two modes: constant bitrate (CBR), and variable bitrate (VBR).
For regular video recordings it's usually recommended you use variable bitrate (note that CRF/CQ is a form of variable bitrate). This allows you to save space where you can but increase usage where it's necessary to help maintain visual quality.
But for live-streaming you use constant bitrate (the reason is due to how networks actually operate and how celluar/mobile networks handle streaming. It's complicated). With CBR, you tell the encoder that you want the result to always be at X bits per second regardless of the resulting quality (good or bad). So that means that during moments of low movement (in game, in an IRL setting, or even on your desktop) the encoder doesn't have to work nearly as hard to fit the current frame into the allotted rate. During high movement moments the encoder has to work extra hard to find those visual shortcuts — such as dithering, detail removal, or macroblocks (shudders) — to keep everything within bounds.
Obviously, removing detail will hurt the quality of an image. And doing that repeatedly will result in that reduced image quality you saw in the first 1080p screenshot. For that screenshot, I encoded the video at 500kbps, which is obviously way too low (I did that for for clickbait). For the 480p screenshot I encoded it using a VBR technique called Constant Quality. The size difference between those two files paints a better picture: the 480p version is 12x larger than the 1080p version despite 1080p having 8x as many pixels as 480p.
Alright, so what do you recommend I use?
Well factors like resolution, framerate, your internet, and your computer's hardware all play a role in determining what's best for you.
Here's a table bitrates for resolution and framerate.
Just note that your internet upload speed needs to be large enough for that bitrate AND whatever else you may use the internet for at the same time.
And that's it! Your stream should look loads better! And that's it for this installment of Stream Academy. Feel free to ask us questions about streaming or for help with any problems you've been having along the way. If you're looking for widgets and alerts for your live-stream journey, then you should look into using Casterlabs (that's us! 😁)

Apex Legends - Season 8: Mayhem
Season Release Date: February 2nd, 2021 Platforms: Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale-hero shooter game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. The game is set in the same science fiction universe as Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall series, with several characters from the Titanfall series appearing either as minor characters or playable Legends. Before a match, players form into two- or three-player squads, and select from pre-designed characters with distinctive abilities, known as "Legends". In "Battle Royale", up to 20 three-person squads or 30 two-person duos land on an island and search for weapons and supplies before attempting to defeat all other players in combat. The available play area on the island shrinks over time, forcing players to keep moving or else find themselves outside the play area which can be fatal. The final team alive wins the round.
I was privileged to join the revered Respawn Entertainment Apex development team mid way through 2020 as a gameplay generalist that spent time prototyping and pitching new weapon and legends ideas. This allowed me to grow my design skills in other areas of the discipline and learn from leading industry creators!
As scope and season requirements where laid out for the Season 8: Mayhem deliverables, I was asked to further stretch both my design and technical skills by developing new game mode modifiers for the Season's events. This work included pitching, prototyping and rapidly playtesting new ways to shake up the Battle Royale formula - nothing was off the table. Numerous game modes were prototyped, tested and iterated on. We ended up landing on 5 solid ideas that were each unique in which parts of the game that they changed or altered. They each were a huge hit with players and the internal dev team alike; creating fun and engaging new ways to the play "Battle Royale".
These game modes launched at the end of the season 8 under the War Games Event! Each game mode breathed fresh life into the standard "Battle Royale" experience, promoting new strategies and squad tactics for players to explore. Each game mode was only live for 2-3 days over the course of 2 weeks, shaking things up for players and paying homage to the season's theme. Check out the War Games Event Trailer below!
youtube
Here are the 5 Game Modes and their mechanics:
Second Chance
In this modifier, each Legend is granted one free respawn per match. Once a Legend is killed, their Respawn Token is consumed as they rise again from their current location retaining all their weapons and gear. After a short duration, the player respawns high in the air to skydive back into the action.
Ultra Zones
Shake up your ideal drop strategy with Ultra Zones! Ultra Zones introduce the concept of multiple Hot Zones within a single map. More epic loot, more gold items! But wait, there’s more! Each Hot Zone is enveloped in a Flash Point—a returning feature from a Season 6 LTM. For those who don’t already know, Flash Points are enormous, glowing bubbles that replenish your HP and shields when you stand in them.
Auto Banners
In this modifier we’ve made a rather small but spicy change to squadmate respawning. Your Squadmates Banner Cards are automatically retrieved! No need to loot their death box to retrieve their Banner Cards, just head straight to a respawn beacon. The loot pool has been altered to contain more Mobile Respawn Beacons too.
Killing Time
Feel the pressure with Killing Time. This event speeds up the match as Legends fall. During a round, whenever a Legend dies, the round time is reduced. If any given round is a massacre, you can bet that ring will be closing real quick! Keep an eye on the round timer and the ring in this modifier.
Armor Regen
Your armor regenerates over time at a rate of 12 points per second. Whenever you take damage, your armor will begin regenerating after an 8-second delay. This delay is doubled to 16 seconds if your armor gets cracked (reaches zero). One last thing for this mode: there are no Shield Cells in the loot pool!
Below is some footage of a prominent APEX Streamer playing the Second Chance game mode. Enjoy the chaos!
