These are different real situations gathered from social media families from their experiences while attending a job interview.
From their experiences, they say if you see below signs, it is high time you respect yourself and move on. We believe these information could help someone avoid toxic workplaces early in the interview process.
1. Keeping a candidate waiting for too long without making them comfortable. It shows the value the business leaders places in people. 2. Interview interruptions, either from external members of staff or the interviewers always excusing themselves to take a phone call. 3. Pestering the candidate as though you are trying to show them how much they do not know. 4. Interviews being postponed severally or taking too long to be set after the initial conversation is a sure red flag, 5. Impromptu Interviews, eg, being called this morning for an afternoon Interview. It is not necessarily evil, but it should be a red flag of disorganization that shall affect your employee experience in the long run. 6. Interviewees speaking to each other, in their mother-tongue in between your interview.
My story I went for a job induction at an LG electronics dealership and the manager there who I guess wanted me to feel his authority came and told me, ‘ unajua hatujajuana vizuri, akasema wait kidogo I will be back so that we get to know each other.That manager harassed me sana that day by just telling me to take a scenario where am selling a tv on phone then sell it to an employee who was there, I gave it try and it was not to his liking. Kupewa lecture ikafuata for long then akauliza an employee there if nimefunzwa how to respond to such things wakasema bado but they will teach me. The whole day huyo manager tu alikua ananiita ananiambia imgn you are selling a tv ,sell it to this employee. After unaambiwa enda, then unaitwa tena unaambiwa imagine you are selling a tv sell it to now a different employee. Niliharasiwa hivo the whole day hadi nikauzia Kila employee kwa hiyo place scenarios za tv, I felt like a mono joining form one. Hapo nikaloose hope na hiyo kazi
When they give you those “interview assignments” in the name of testing your skills beware. Most want interviewers to give them ideas and work plans then they will go ahead and use it and not hire any interviewers. I got such a job interview and told them due to time I can only do part of the task to show them my skills and thought process. I did the bare minimum but gave it my all. They later followed up that my work was unique and if I can give more details. I told them I got other engagements and I would appreciate if they could give me feedback of the interview from my work and the oral interview. They wrote back saying they can’t hire me at the moment but if I could be interested in giving them more details they would appreciate it. I ignored them coz I knew they were users. You work for them for free in the name of “it’s an interview process.” Pass me with that sh*t! I prepared a whole recruitment strategy for them. Their mzungu called wanting to get more information on what I had written, I gladly explained and that was the end. There was actually an online petition to make them stop interviewing people for ideas and never hiring them. One Acre Fund is good at this. They advertise one position daily only for ideas from candidates and will NEVER hire them.
Look at the shoes of the employees from the gate to the interview room. You’ll learn a lot about the company. Viatu if the salary is low they’ll will be very well dressed but with cheaper shoes, Most people with Low income can rarely budget for a decent pair of shoes… I’ve used it severally, not only for interviews but even in marketing. When approaching a company for a deal I look at the shoes of every person I meet. If most have decent shoes the deal normally goes through if not they people you’ll meet at the office will have very little regard of what you are selling and theur clients…. That thing works like it’s yesterday… There is a firm I found most employees had very nice but cheaper shoes and some had torn ones at the gate, yet the director wore imported designer sandals… By the time I got to talk to him I already knew his answer. Problem is his firm is based on out look, I.e they are in the service industry yet he had invested so little in his employees… Honey, I work for a leather company and am in leather footwear sales…. I know a good shoe by looking at it…If your employees can afford nor to recycle good leather shoes with a quality sole (can even start from 1000/= but with a good sole from 2500/=) then they are paid well. On the same note, you can spot an overworn Leather shoe anywhere. .. Ata viatu za punch, You need like 5 to maintain a good look throughout the week… If a shoe is overworn you’ll know…
Once upon a time(not so long ago) a certain hotel on Mombasa road called and asked if I could attend an interview, I told them I was not interested as I was already working elsewhere…..they were insistent and I opted against my better judgement and went for the interview. They wasted 3hrs, and they had no courtesy of keeping us informed on what’s going on. I went to the Ass. H.R and asked her to give me my c.v which they had from earlier application, she politely did, asked her to go to their system and delete my profile as a viable candidate and to never contact me and I left. The following day they had the nerve to call me and asked why I left……..I just hang up on them.

Always inquire about the employee turnover….. No matter how nice the boss sounds as you step in, this might just be a way to win you then use you. I joined a UK-based company in 2018, remote working with staff all over…. First as a backoffice supervisor and in two months I was promoted to asst.PM. Senior PM was an Indian lady based in Abu Dhabi. I used to find too many collisions on calls between her and the boss and I thought she was the issue. In 5months I was promoted to senior pm and she was fired. In short, by the time I resigned after two years, the company had lost 8 senior employees, most just resigned out of frustration. So, just note that if the turnover is high, you’ll either take too much shit or the job won’t be there for too long!

Rita, know your worth dear..utafika hapo tuu…always remember apart from being a job seeker you are a HUMAN BEING that should be treated with dignity…nothing less..You can imagine the baggage I would deal with coz she already had a formed mentality about me…Mark you I had not applied for the job someone referred me sue to work experience
“Willing to work long-hours and under pressure” on the JD. Won’t even bother applying.
Politely ask how many people have quit the team that’s trying to hire you in the last year. If it’s more than 1, there’s probably a good reason. High staff-turnover is a huge redflag. Run!!
Boss shouting and/or being rude to the teagirl. Also watch the other workers. If they shrink at the boss’ sight, run.
Being delayed at the interview eg you are scheduled to be interviewed at 9am and come 11am you are still waiting worse still if no explanation is being given to you
If he/she tells you that there’s no fixed work schedule (yet the arrival time is fixed), or no fixed job description, just know you’ll be misused thoroughly. Also if you are told a story about how the employee you are meant to replace quit without notice…

If u want to gauge how serious an organization is, read the body language of the security guard n the receptionist!!! If they appear demoralized n dejected, my friend, run.
The type of questions they ask.. one male interviewer kept asking about my personal life e.g “if you say you are not married then are you dating?” And you said you have children, where is their dad?” Questioning for an Administrative position.!!!! I answered like this like this coz I was already pissed..

I went for an interview once ,the interview which was scheduled for 2pm started at 5pm. Prior to that,us interviewees had been sent a form to sign that we would forfeit 50% of our first salary because we had used an agency, which wasn’t true because all of us had been shortlisted from a career fair. A lady panelist asked what my family planning plans were.they were tired of female employees coz they have to go for maternity leave..saa hio am newly married ata nilishindwa la ku sema…afterwards they sent me a mail that I was the successful applicant two days letter they withdrew the offer wakasema they will let me know in due cause if I will be employed or not…useless organization..nkt..

GARISSA TO GRACE, THE STORY OF ABDINOOR ADEN
To those who don’t know him, is just an ordinary tiny Cushite boy chasing his dreams. But to many, the boy once dubbed ‘The talkative’ by his elder sister has overcome odds to place his name among Kenya’s media personalities.
Known to Garissa’s population for his eloquence, on stage courage and creativity, Abdinoor has not only commentated at various soccer matches, but also served as an entertainer; reciting poems at different stages, acting plays for all types of audience and leading road shows.
The smallest son and third born son in a family of 8, his soccer commentary skills, public speaking, emceeing and communication ability, earned him praise and prominence despite his age.
He has gone extra miles, making extreme decisions to keep his dream alive. To remain relevant and follow all the latest news updates, he bought his first TV with the first 10,000 shillings he earned as a transport reimbursement at a workshop in Nairobi, 2009. TV might have never been a priority for his parents though they could afford it but to him it was an essential item for his growth.
Abdinoor was tired with the continued humiliation by his neighbours who at times used their TV as a bait to engage him in tasks such as fetching water and at times going to the shop to buy stuff.
His father served as a driver for a Kenyan journalist, Willis Raburu’s dad, Peter Raburu while he was a DC in Mandera. This never inspired his journalism career though.
From sweeping soccer watching dens in order to watch the matches for free, to getting punished for arriving home late from watching soccer matches his media foundation didn’t come easy. He would be jailed for loitering after coming from a soccer game,
Abdinoor started his education at Police line nursery school before he joined Young Muslim primary school, Garissa in the year 1997.
During his junior school days, Abdinoor participated in reading competitions and poetry. While in the sixth class, he performed for Retired President Daniel Arap Moi in 2002 in Garissa.
He earned fame too for a poem on miraa/Khat which he used to perform as a way of creating awareness about dangers of the drug.
After completing school aged 13, he joined Wajir high school in the year 2005. His elder brother, Abdikadir Aden who was then a form four student, was a huge influence in his choice of the school after turning down the chance to join Garissa High school. At school, he was nicknamed ‘Atom’ for his size.
In Wajir, he was in new surroundings, new people but he kept his talent alive.
Abdinoor was the youngest presenter and contestant at various events where his public speaking and concept explanation skills earned him a ticket to compete at different competitions till his final year. He defied his age to apply his public speaking skills where he was an active participant at inter district schools debating and journalism activities.
When the mobile phone craze started building, Abdinoor would ask his colleagues to film him as he pretended to be reporting or reporting news.
In 2008, the final year at school, Abdinoor made history in for being part of The Provincial Drama winning team, regional Science Congress Winner, and a member of the football team that won the provincial event.
His Ability to negotiate with his colleagues through dialogue and good speeches never went unnoticed. He was rewarded the most disciplined student during the annual school awards giving ceremony in the year 2008 for his good leadership and harmonious nature.
His passion for football dates back to his high school days. He was enlisted by the school soccer team having been the team’s favourite fan since form one. He was the ball boy, kit manager and even the team doctor at times. As an appreciation, he was included in the final 18-man squad that went to compete at the Kenya secondary schools term games held in Machakos in the year 2008.
In 2008 after completing high School, his dream was to join Kenya Institute of MASS communication. However, It never materialized as he couldn’t afford to go to College. He wrote three different application letters but his parents couldn’t afford since his siblings too studied. Furthermore, Wajir High School Withheld his certificate since he didn’t clear his fees. He kept performing at different events to support himself.
Upon completion of his studies, having waited for long he finally got hold of the microphone, unbelievably, from commentators, three times his age. He would be invited to events with fixed payment, but Abdinoor didn’t resist. This is where he learnt patience. He has never looked back since thus gaining prominence in Garissa and the larger North-Eastern region for his passionate and exciting acting and style of soccer commentating.
During April 2009, Copa Coca Cola, Abdinoor approached the organizers asking for a chance to apply his commentary skills.
After impressing when he was tried whether he was equal to the task, Abdinoor further got the opportunity to commentate both at the zonal and national finals at Nyayo Stadium.
In May 2009, while in Naivasha, he was hired by a tour company as a sales person. Sadly, he had to leave the job during the second week in order to go and apply for a national identification card.
In September, he briefly joined Garissa teachers’ college. A few days earlier, in his second semester, Abdinoor quit the teaching course he had started. His schoolmates’ efforts to convince him failed as he believed it wasn’t his profession. Abdinoor would sneak from the school atop a vehicle which supplied the school canteen to balance his teaching course, marketing and his passion for performing arts. He would use the money from his performances for his upkeep in the teaching college.
December the same year, while in Mombasa, Abdinoor approached the organizers of the Pwani International youth football tournament, on whether he could be given the opportunity to commentate. He was auditioned in the first five minutes of the match together with three other men. Abdinoor was given the green light to commentate the whole tournament after wowing the organizers.
His star shone in February 2010, whereby after quitting teaching college to try his luck at the auditions to join the talent academy, he was awarded the best performing artist during North eastern province talent search completion thus earning a scholarship to join the National youth talent academy in Nairobi. He received an intensive training on film and theater production.
Apart from commentating, Abdinoor played great role in civic education and awareness creation from Garissa to Mandera as he was involved largely during the 2010 referendum informing the public on the content of the new constitution as well as voter participation during the referendum.
He later joined G-youth youth civic program in 2011. Through the radio training received, he made various radio programs on topics concerning youth affairs, where he informed, educated, and brought together the youth and their stakeholders.
Abdinoor has risen with all his struggles and a KCDF GYOUTH Scholarship program enabled him to complete his Diploma in broadcast journalism.
In September 2011, Abdinoor prepared his first news bulletin using his mobile phone and presented the stories on a handwritten paper in the Garissa based Risala Radio station he voluntarily served.
He would script and record radio promos using the voices of his neighbors or their kids.
During Safaricom sponsored Sakata ball competition in Garissa, at the zonal level matches 2011, Abdinoor, after impressing the sponsors, was rewarded by getting the chance to commentate at the regional and national finals.
His biggest opportunity to date came in 2012, where Abdinoor emerged first runner up in the Supersport Swahili soccer commentator search competition, dubbed bonga boli.
His participation was threatened by his lack of fare. He couldn’t travel to Nairobi.
Later in the evening, the headteacher of Garissa Primary school enabled him to pay for his fare since he had been. We were provided meals and during eid, we were given lunch handouts by the management he says.
In January 2013, after commentating at a local football match, Abdinoor was hired by Mombasa based Radio station, Radio Salaam, which largely broadcasts in Swahili. Despite the direct recruitment, Abdinoor passed the audition test and became the first Somali born Swahili presenter from North Eastern to serve in the station.
He later on became the first Somali Soccer analyst in Kenya after he was hired to work in the Supersport Swahili Programme, Mchakamchaka. He analyzed local and continental soccer matches in Swahili language. It didn’t come easy for him since the government had banned night travel.
‘’While working in Mombasa, the only vehicle I never boarded is an ambulance and a police car. From parcel vehicles to cargo lorries, it was a hustle’’. He risked his life to pay for his University fees by traveling to take part in soccer analysis show which aired every Tuesday at Supersport. Tuesday was his only off day as he worked six days at school.
A big incident changed his life. One afternoon as he looked for a bureau to change money, Abdinoor was conned 100,000 shillings by con men. He was given tabled exercise book papers cut creatively thinking they were dollars. Luckily, he reported and the crooks were sentenced later to 3 years. That was my saving to buy a camera for media work he says.
The following Tuesday, he received an Email from the BBC where he was invited for an interview. The rest is history as he became successful to serve in the institution.
From the Garissa University to the most recent general elections, Abdinoor says he has earned experience covering different news events while at the BBC.
He admired the late Ahmed Darwesh, and Abdi Osman for their reporting skills.
Whereas his colleagues have left journalism for other careers such as serving in the forces, Abdinoor believes passion is key to everything.
His vision includes starting a foundation and to inspire talented youth in his community in future.
During his graduation at Technical University of Mombasa, Abdinoor invited his two little sisters who were in High school for to motivate them so that they too would commit to their studies and work hard in school.
In 2015, Abdinoor auditioned for a commercial advert where he beat prominent names to play the main character in the Naivas Mpesa Competition.
Even though he is only 26, Abdinoor terms passion, patience, hunger and desire to succeed as his inspiration. He is inspired by Steve Jobs and any person who remains positive in the face of adversity.
According to him, he doesn’t regret everything he might have done without pay as it has earned him experience and contributed to his rise.
He is lucky to have performed for different Kenyan Presidents including President Daniel Moi, Mwai Kibaki and even emceed for President Uhuru Kenyatta at an event in Garissa.
Abdinoor has directed radio dramas, scripted plays and produced commercials for different organizations.
He might be perceived a joker, but blending his film skills and journalism has developed his sense of humor and simplicity.

Kitengela - What you need to know before settling or investing
Kitengela town is located in Kajiado County just 30 kilometers south of Nairobi. The town is part of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. Kitengela has an urban population of about 30,000. Kitengela begun as The Kitengela group ranch, made up of 18,292 ha and 214 registered members which was subdivided in 1988 in efforts by the Government to encourage private land ownership in pastoral systems, with the aim of intensifying and commercializing livestock production. After subdivision of the group ranch, land fragmentation and sales have continued at a steady and escalating pace.
Kitengela is close to Athi River town in Machakos County in the former Eastern Province, while Kitengela belongs to Kajiado County in the former Rift Valley Province. Kitengela is growing quickly and is expanding with residential houses.
Close to Nairobi National Park is also the Kitengela Game Conservation Area populated with buffalo, Masai giraffe, eastern black rhino, Common eland, impala, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, common waterbuck and Defassa waterbuck, hippopotamus, common warthog, olive baboon, monkeys and the attendant carnivores – lion, spotted hyena, cheetah, side-striped and black-backed jackals, African golden wolves, bat-eared fox and smaller carnivores.
The diversity of species is decreasing in the Kitengela area adjacent to the Nairobi National Park, where land-uses not compatible with wildlife are increasing.
Kitengela town is largely a residential town as opposed to an industrial town although the town is in immediate proximity to the export processing zone authority (EPZA) that has over 50,000 workers who work at the many companies located at the zone.
The presence of the EPZA occasioned a subsequent and exponential high demand for residential quarters, with time, education institutions sprang up and with them worship centers, entertainment locations.
Consequently many more industries were established in Kitengela town as other land owners set up huge flower farms and whom they planted flowers for export considering that the Jomo Kenyatta international airport is just about 20 kilometers from Kitengela town. Three of the most dominant flower farms with a big number of employees are Saitoti flower farm, Maasai roses and Isinya roses. This flower farms employ over 10,000 workers who also live with the precincts of the town.
Today, Kitengela town boasts of a dozen major banks, 9 microfinance institutions,14 SACCOS including 5 transport Saccos,6 major retails stores, 6 private hospitals, several private owned clinics, a hoist of entertainment joints. Several worship centers including a mosque which sits right in the center of the town. Apart from the public schools, Kitengela town and its environs has 24 private high cost schools with several of the school transport buses ( Soon to be painted yellow) criss crossing the town. The hospitality industry has also not been left behind with over a dozen high class eating and leisure places supplementing the many Nyama Choma eating localities.
Property Prices
If you don’t mind living away from the city, you should keep the property prices in mind. The average price of a spacious 2 bedroom apartment for rent in Kitengela is Kshs 20,000 compared to what you would pay in say Kileleshwa or Mombasa Road.
Because land is cheaper in Kitengela and construction material is readily available and affordable than in Nairobi, developers are taking advantage of this. They are building luxurious gated communities that are similar to the ones in Nairobi suburbs such as Lavington or Karen.
If you want to construct your home from the ground up, there are many hardware shops, building materials and affordable labour. Even with a small portion of land, it will not be a costly affair to construct your home.
Schools
If you are thinking of investing in Kitengela and you are worried about transitioning your child to a good school, there are different learning institutions.
