Cricket Controversy 2008 - Harbhajan Slaps Sreesanth
One more record was broken by an Indian cricketer during IPL 1, on April 26, 2008, when Harbhajan gave Sreesanth the most expensive slap in cricket history.
In monetary terms, the slap cost Bhajji approximately ` 2.6 Crores, or about $550,000 in match fees. He was banned for the remainder of IPL 1, 11 matches, extendable to 13 matches, if Mumbai Indians reached the semi-final and final.
This is apart from the cost Mumbai Indians would have to pay by losing their top bowler.
The incident occurred when the players of the two teams 'greeted' one another after Punjab beat Mumbai in a close match; Mumbai were led by Harbhajan.
There were many versions of the incident. Both Harbhajan and Sreesanth gave a watered down version that would have us believe that they'd actually had a friendly chat and that Sreesanth had actually shed tears of joy (see video).
Eye-witnesses gave different versions depending on the player they supported. Some blamed Sreesanth for having taunted Harbhajan after Mumbai lost the match.
Harbhajan was said to have warned Sreesanth, earlier, not to sledge Mumbai's players during the match.
Many felt that the two loose cannons of Indian cricket had had it coming to them, and were surprised that Sreesanth had been let off with only a warning.
After the incident, Punjab skipper Yuvraj Singh, in the news recently for the water boy incident in Sri Lanka, had a word with Bhajji. Bhajji also had the rare opportunity of speaking to other cricket bigwigs, such as ICC Commissioner, Lalit Modi, and ICC's principal advisor, IS Bindra.
When asked about the incident, in a post-match press conference, Bhajji said that he preferred to 'talk about cricket'. See here WEIRD NEWS
Yuvraj confirmed that an 'ugly'incident had indeed happened, although he didn't reveal much. But he was clearly tempted to share some juicy details with the press but his coach Tom Moody intervened before Yuvraj could let any cats out of the proverbial bag.
Yuvi said that Bhajji had met Sreesanth in the Punjab dressing room, and that he presumed they had cleared the air between them.

"A Day To Remember" Says Pakistan Batsman Fakhar Zaman
By Brandan White
Pakistan opening batsman Fakhar Zaman has said that the 2017 Champions Trophy final win over India is still fresh in his mind and will remain a day that will be remembered for a long time.
He celebrated his fabulous hundred against archrival India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final.
On Friday the Pakistani left hander marked the completion of four years since Pakistan routed India at The Oval in London.
Fakhar Zaman was the hero of Pakistan’s incredible triumph, scoring 114 off 106 balls.
Taking to his official Twitter account on Friday, Fakhar Zaman celebrated the occasion and wrote “A day to remember for ages, a day to cherish, a day to feel proud, still didn't get over it, neither of us, and never will I believe."
Fakhar Zaman had a lucky reprieve in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, as he was caught behind off a Jasprit Bumrah no-ball in the fourth over of the innings. He went on to make Bumrah and India pay, smashing 12 fours and three sixes in a fabulous knock.
Azhar Ali (59), Babar Azam (46), Mohammad Hafeez (57 not out) and Imad Wasim (25 not out) all chipped in as Pakistan posted a mammoth 338 for 4, batting first in that game.
Most Indian bowlers returned with expensive figures. Bumrah went wicketless and conceded 68 runs in his nine overs. Ravichandran Ashwin went for 70 in his ten, while Ravindra Jadeja conceded 67 in eight.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/44) was the most economical of the Indian bowlers on the day.
India crumbled under pressure despite having batting firepower to chase down the target.
But they failed to get going and fell well short. Rohit Sharma (0), captain Virat Kohli (5) and Shikhar Dhawan (21) all fell to the guile of Mohammad Amir (3/16) as India collapsed to 33 for 3.
The wickets kept falling thereafter, as Yuvraj Singh (22), MS Dhoni (4) and Kedar Jadhav (9) also failed to make an impact. Hard-hitting batsman Hardik Pandya gave India hope with his blistering stroke-play. However, his innings ended in unfortunate fashion, as he was run out for 76 off 43 balls after a terrible mix-up with Jadeja.
India, eventually, were cleaned up for 158 in 30.3 overs.
Apart from Amir, Hasan Ali (3/19) also stood out with his performance.
Team India went into the final as favourites, having thrashed Pakistan by 124 runs in the group match, but came out a cropper on the day that mattered the most.

sourav ganguly: Happy birthday Sourav Ganguly: 'Dada' of Indian cricket turns 48 | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: Sourav Ganguly, the captain credited for putting fire in the belly of Indian cricket, celebrates his 48th birthday today. ‘Dada’, ‘Prince of Calcutta’, ‘God of the Off-Side’, ‘King of Comebacks’ — Ganguly has been christened with multiple nicknames by cricket fans, experts and team-mates alike through his playing career. Ganguly took over India’s captaincy after the match-fixing fiasco in 2000 and proved to be a leader who believed in youth and putting them in the line of fire to get the best out of them. Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra, Mohammad Kaif and others are all such examples from that era. His call to ask Sehwag to open the batting in Tests changed Sehwag’s career and had an incredible impact on Indian cricket. Ganguly was also the one who asked Rahul Dravid to wear the wicket-keepers’ gloves, at a time when India were struggling to find a permanent keeper. ‘Dada’ is still India’s second highest run-scorer in ODIs, with a tally of 11,363 runs at an average of 41.02, which includes 22 hundreds and 72 half-centuries.
After retiring from the game in 2008, Ganguly chose to give back to the game that made him one of the icons of world cricket. Having served as the president of Cricket Association of Bengal, Ganguly was elected as the current president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Apart from featuring in 311 ODIs, Ganguly played 113 Tests, scoring 7212 runs with 16 centuries and 35 fifties. He never played T20 international cricket.
