How To Move A Couch By Yourself
While it may seem easier to just leave your old couch behind and wish it the best, first see if you can hone in on your inner strength, embrace the challenge, and get to work. Here’s how to move a couch all on your own.
Equipment you will need to move a couch by yourself
Have two arms? You’re almost there. Here’s what else you’ll need to get that couch from point A to point B:
Plastic wrap
Moving blankets
Oversized furniture sliders or a flat furniture dolly (if you live in a managed building you may be able to borrow a flat furniture dolly, otherwise you can rent one from most hardware stores)
Furniture straps
Here’s how it’s done -
Break it down into all of its parts Your very first step is going to be to prep the sofa for a move, which includes taking it apart as much as you possibly can. Remove cushions and legs, and detach each of the sections if the couch is a sectional. Keep in mind that you don’t want to force anything off that isn’t designed to detach. For example, if there’s no way to unscrew the legs from the base, leave them on there instead of trying to rig some way to remove them (which will just lead to broken couch). If you remove any nails, screws, or other tiny parts when you’re breaking down your couch, store those in their own little baggie and make sure to note where you put them.
Wrap it up
Once your couch is broken down into its attendant pieces, you can get to work prepping each part for the move. Wrap cushions and pillows in plastic wrap or toss them in a large garbage bag. If you were able to remove the legs, either wrap those separately or put them in the bag with the cushions to keep everything together. You have a couple options for wrapping up the base of your couch. If you’re super worried about damage you can use plastic wrap around the whole thing and then cover it in a moving blanket, or you can skip the plastic and go right to the blanket — whichever makes the most sense for you. You may also want to consider providing extra protection for armrests and any sharp corners by putting cardboard over them and securing with either packing tape or additional plastic wrap.
Get to sliding If you’re using sliders: Furniture sliders are one of the magic tricks of the moving trade. In addition to protecting your floors when you’re sliding heavy furniture across them, sliders help you glide your furniture from one room to another with much less effort than would be required otherwise. Depending on the size and shape of your sofa (as well as your own capabilities), it may be easier for you to tip your sofa so it’s standing vertically and put the sliders under one end that way. This helps distribute the weight in your favor, though it can be a bit unruly. Only attempt this if you’re confident you can hold your couch in place when it’s standing on its end. If you’re using a flat furniture dolly: A flat furniture dolly is short, wide, and designed to help you move large furniture. Don’t attempt to move a couch with just any type of dolly—such as the kind you might use to move appliances or luggage—since those aren’t made for the same purpose. If you don’t have a flat furniture dolly, however, a utility dolly (also called a hand truck) could work for you. To move a couch with a dolly, tip it on to its end and slowly maneuver it onto the platform. Use furniture straps to secure it in place. From there, you’ll just have to push and let the dolly’s wheels do the rest.
Getting your couch into the truck Once your couch is outside you’re going to have one last moving mountain to climb: getting the couch into the moving truck. Fortunately, if you rented a truck it almost certainly came with an attachable ramp that you can use to wheel your couch up with either the furniture sliders or dolly. When you call to order your rental be sure to request that a ramp is included, and double check that it’s there when you pick up your truck on moving day. If you don’t have a ramp you’ll have to get a little bit more crafty. Wheel the couch up to the truck bed and, if it’s not vertical already, move it so it’s standing up on its side. Then carefully hoist it from the bottom and tilt it onto the truck. If it feels too heavy, don’t try to do it on your own and enlist some help instead.
General heavy lifting tips
Any time you are lifting something heavy you need to take extra special care to protect yourself from injury. These include:
Knowing your limits. Don’t push it! If something feels like it’s too heavy for you to lift, then move on to Plan B. Never put your body at risk just to move something.
Squatting, not bending. When you reach down to lift something like the end of your couch, be sure to squat at your knees instead of bending over at your waist. This will help protect your back when you lift up.
Lift with your legs and abs. Your back shouldn’t be taking on any of the brunt of heavy lifting. Focus your efforts in your legs and your core, and if you start to feel strain on your back, put the item down and either change your stance or find someone who can help you.
What if you have stairs?
If you need to move a couch up or down stairs, you’re going to need assistance. It’s simply too dangerous to try to do it on your own, and sliders and dollies won’t work on them. Once again, your best bet is to hire someone to come over just for that task—it will cost you a lot less than hiring professional movers and you’ll get that extra set of hands you so disparately need.
No couch is worth putting yourself in danger or at risk of serious injury. Assess the situation and be realistic about what you can and cannot do. And if you need to bring in the pros, go ahead and do it.

Cafe AU// sweet pea
Summary: Sweet Pea comes to a cafe to visit the girl that works there but he doesn't believe he deserves her.

A/N: this idea was inspired by a girl I saw visiting her boyfriend at a cafe and I thought it was so cute that I had to do an AU
After school and during holidays, she works at a cafe to pay rent for her small apartment. She loves the atmosphere; the smell of coffee, the soft beats of the music and the wooden theme of the cafe. Soon enough, she became a regular worker from her good mood and polite attitude. It's almost not a job for her, more of an escape.
She serves customers, her delicate smile greeting their often tired expressions. They find her smile and persona inviting, warm, often making them feel at home. Her fine chestnut hair tied in a high bun with a patterned half apron tied around her waist. Before every shift, she carefullg tucks her black polo in and ties her half apron on, changing the apron from day to day to mix up the patterns.
Sweet Pea, a boy with black hair and dark eyes visits the cafe often. He's not much of a coffee drinker but the cafe brings a calmness over his aggressive and hard exterior. It's the only place that clams and softens him and despite his hatred towards vulnerability, he welcomes this unusual side to him. His order remains the same each time he visits; grilled chicken foccacia and a bottle of water.
She remembered this off the top of her head and when he'd walk to the counter, she would have his order already down and with a smile would ask, "the usual?" He would nod and ask how her day was as she slipped the money into the register. The first time she did this, he was taken by surprise from her observation but also the warm feeling it brought to his chest. It was unusual for someone to pay close attention to the things he liked. It made him smile, a feature that hardly graced his grave face.
He started to come often enough that they addressed each other by name and he knew the days and hours she worked. She thought nothing much of it but rather enjoyed seeing him when she was working, despite their minimal interactions and short conversations. Soon, it became the only days he'd come in; just to see her. Just to talk to her, even if it was for five minutes. He would find himself gazing towards her and watching as she made a coffee or collected food for someone or cleared tables. When she cleared tables, she would glance towards him and smile. He found refuge in the most unexpected place.
She remembers the first time he walked through the doors. His tall height and Broward shoulders only just fitting though the frame. The leather jacket he wore and the tattoo displayed on his neck made her voice shake with fright but that smile remained on her face. She still remembers how his voice sounded; gravelly and menacing as if it was rehearsed so much, he couldn't control it. Now, she hears his voice and it brings a smile to her face. It's softer now; deep but coaxes the ears instead of frightening them away. She's made him smile more than once and there's this feeling she gets when she does. Lately, he hasn't been able to stop.
He had been in a fight one day. Anger was coursing through him and he didn't know where else to go so he went to her. He knew she worked the late shifts on Thursdays, and as she was cleaning the tables in the cafe, he knocked on the door. He stood at the glass door, rain pouring onto his already drenched hair and she didn't hesitate to let him in. She sat at a table with him, listening to his day and noticing the cuts and bruises on his face. It worried her.
She knew from the day he walked in he was troubled. The more he came in, the more he softened; the more she saw a new side to him. Her instant fesrs dissolved away and she developed a different feeling towards him. A feeling of comfort. A feeling of belonging.
She cleaned his cuts and her delicate fingers on his face, ignited something in Sweet Pea. He grabbed her hand and stopped her from pressing the cotton ball to his cut. Their eyes met and her delicate smile ceased to exist, captured by his brown eyes. They were polar opposites: she was warm, he was cold; she was delicately sculpted, he was rough around the edges. But as they stared into each other's eyes, the opposing colours warm with the shared emotion, they both knew there was this connection between them.
And as Sweet Pea let her hand go, the foreign feeling in his chest was pushed to the side once again. As if, he had been brought up to not touch anything delicate in fear it might break.

Current State of the Florida Real Estate Market
For years, Florida real estate was at the top of the list of properties investors wanted to acquire. The Sunshine States has been deemed one of the top tourist destinations in the world and investors often purchase homes and condos for use as short-term rentals.
The potential to acquire wealth from Florida real estate investments was a very real possibility until the economy fell apart. Now much of the state is littered with foreclosure properties created through upside-down mortgages and massive mortgage fraud.
Thousands of oceanfront condos and beach houses sit vacant. Investors who purchased vacation properties are finding it difficult to attract tenants because people can no longer afford a vacation at the beach. Tiesha Davis, a single, working mom of three, thought she had found a suitable apartment for her young family. But the home turned into a major stress test when her landlord told her he wasn't going to renew her lease.
The reason: She didn't provide her landlord with an ultrasound image of the child she was carrying.
She signed her rental agreement on Sept. 26, 2017. She was four months pregnant at the time.
About four months later, on Jan. 11, Jose Galindo, the assistant property manager at Sorrento Rental Community in Miramar, a privately owned affordable housing complex, told Davis, 26, he wasn't going to renew her 12-month lease because she hadn't disclosed her pregnancy or provided an ultrasound photo, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court in Fort Lauderdale on April 3. The project was financed, in part, by tax dollars.
The suit alleges that Galindo had to know Davis was pregnant when they first met in September.
"During such time Ms. Davis was noticeably pregnant, to the extent that Mr. Galindo insisted that she sit in the front seat of the golf cart when he was driving her through the property," the suit says. But in January, according to the complaint, Galindo asked Davis if she was pregnant, after monthly pest control visits and an inspection of her apartment turned up baby goods in her closet.
Galindo, the suit alleges, stated that Davis should have let them know that she was pregnant in her application, that she had to check a box, and that she was required to show them a letter from her doctor and an ultrasound at the time of the tenancy."
Davis said she never hid her pregnancy. She is joined in the suit alongside plaintiffs Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence (HOPE), a Florida not-for-profit corporation established in 1988 to fight against housing discrimination, and Akia Wiggins-Shabazz, a tester for HOPE who was told in March by a Sorrento leasing agent that she would need to provide an ultrasound of her unborn baby if she wanted to rent an apartment, according to the suit.
Wiggins-Shabazz and Davis are African American. HOPE assigned two testers posing as pregnant women to apply for a lease at Sorrento and a sister property, Monterra, in Cooper City in December — a white, Hispanic woman and an African American woman.
According to the suit, both were told there were not units available but were given a list of requirements they would have to meet to qualify as renters. Among the requirements: revealing how many people would be living in the apartment, child support information, proof of income, and presentation of driver's license and Social Security card.
The African American tester was asked about arrests and was told of situations that could result in a denial of tenancy — which included being a current homeowner, and having a history of foreclosures, short sales or evictions.
The Hispanic tester was not asked about arrests or told of the same denials of tenancy, according to the suit.
There was nothing said about tests regarding pregnancy or unborn children.
HOPE then sent Wiggins-Shabazz, also, like Davis, a young black mother, to Sorrento to determine whether the ultrasound and a doctor's note for unborn children was a policy and practice of ZRS Management, which does business as Sorrento at Miramar. She had posed as a pregnant woman and the mother of a 5-year-old.
When told of the materials she'd need to apply for an apartment, Wiggins-Shabazz was asked to provide a doctor's note verifying pregnancy and an ultrasound picture. She was told the same at Monterra when she was sent there by HOPE on March 19.
Also named as defendants in Davis' suit: ZOM Foxcroft, which does business as Sorrento at Miramar and owns a 320-unit multi-family development in Miramar; and ZOM Monterra, which does business as Monterra Apartments. Monterra and Sorrento are operated by ZRS Management.
The "defendants' actions described above constitute a pattern, practice, and policy of housing discrimination on the basis of familial status, sex, pregnancy, race and national origin," the suit, submitted by attorney Matthew Dietz, contends. "In engaging in such activities, defendants have acted intentionally or recklessly violated plaintiffs' civil rights and damaged the rights and feelings of plaintiffs Davis and Wiggins-Shabazz."
The suit asks the court to determine that ZRS Management violated the Fair Housing Amendments Act and demands that the rental company must not discriminate against Davis or Wiggins-Shabazz or any other person because of their sex or familial status. The suit also asks for appropriate compensatory and punitive damages for Davis "to compensate for the humiliation, embarrassment and emotional distress" the defendants' actions caused.
"Every day I'm looking for apartments. I can't focus on my job. I can't focus on my children," Davis told WPLG Local 10 News, which first broadcast her story earlier this month. Representatives from Sorrento have not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
"To ask for a photograph of the inside of a mother's womb is so intrusive, invasive, it has absolutely no business reason for being in an application for rent," Keenya Robertson, president and CEO of HOPE, told WPLG.
"You're denying housing to those people who this housing was intended to benefit," Robertson added. "You're not doing what it is you said you'd do when you took our tax dollars to make this housing available."

The Nuts and Bolts of Negligent Security Cases

Negligent security cases are time consuming, very costly, require a hyper attention to detail, a team effort and knowledge of foreseeability, and in many cases criminal law and a ‘typical’ negligent security case does not and will not ever exist. Our firm has handled hundreds of these cases over the years and have obtained more than $400 million in results for our clients. We can most affirmatively say the immense challenges of these cases are outweighed by the results that can help bring justice to a victim or family that the criminal justice system may never be able to provide, while also changing the way a business or entire industry operates.
In a wrongful death car accident case, we all know to preserve evidence, request the relevant reports, statements and traffic homicide reports. We contact the witnesses tied to this particular moment in time, hound law enforcement and medical examiners to make sure we have all evidence tied to the incident, and begin working these pieces into the theory we hope will increase the probability of success at the end of the case. While this basic and incomplete framework is an important part of a negligent security case as well, it does not account for the historical analysis necessary to place the subject incident in the perspective necessary to appreciate which theory is best, and why.
Power of Foreseeability: $100 million verdict
Like any of the most complicated areas of practice there are multiple layers to consider when litigating a negligent security case. Foreseeability of the act in question, most often a crime, is the first element of the case to consider. For example, it is good to know whether a particular shooting or sexual assault occurred in the common area of an apartment complex, over which the owner or manager had exclusive control. It is important to know whether there is a history of any such activity upon the Premises, and in the areas adjacent or related thereto. There is a history of cases where the Plaintiff counsel assumes that because the crime does not appear to be a “hit” and because the crime on the property is “bad” that their case is a winner. Some of the most common arguments by defense council are tied to the character of the victim or because the area may have a high crime rate there isn’t much the property owner could have done to stop the incident that caused the death or harm of your client. In most states, neither argument has much merit because of the statutes that lay out the responsibility of the property owner to take reasonable measures to protect all guests, residents or customers on a commercial property from harm. In November 2007, we successfully obtained a $102.7 million verdict in a negligent security shooting case thought to be the largest verdict of its kind in the country. We represented a patron of an exotic dance club. Our client sat waiting in his car for his friend to return from retrieving his wallet when he was approached by an unknown person who attempted to rob him at gunpoint. The assailant shot our young client. The bullets rendered him a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic. The jury found that the strip mall where the club was located did not have sufficient security, as there was only one guard on duty. The strip mall’s ownership admitted they had never spent one dollar on security or safety despite the fact there were 26 violent crimes on the same property during the seven years prior to the shooting of our client. Full Speed Investigation
Just as the homicide detective should be doing, the negligent security practitioner is on the scene canvassing for witnesses as soon as possible. These are not simply witnesses to the crime itself. The residents or employees at an apartment complex, the customers at a local mall, or motel guests or employees can speak to the history of the particular business in the days, months and years leading up to your client’s incident. While an easily accessible crime grid can help establish foreseeability, it is these witnesses that can bring the argument to life. One must be comfortable with the fact that even as you near trial, many questions surrounding the crime may never be known which makes these witnesses that are best cultivated in the early part of your investigation key elements to your case. Your investigation may also include research and prying into every resource at your disposal and available to you through both formal discovery and independent background research. There is no rest when examining the migration of tenants, guests and other visitors to the property, and searches for all relevant historical ties to the property, and to those who have worked at, lived, or visited it. A systematic inquiry, regardless of what the police reports for the property show (or don’t), will place the incident itself within a broader framework.

Negligent Security and Crimes of Opportunity
But what about so many of those cases where you lack the luxury of relying upon a ream of police reports, disgruntled former employees, and former tenants who diligently memorialized their grievances in tidy emails ready for an exhibit sticker at a deposition? What happens, for example, when your examination of the facts does not fairly call for an increase in security patrols or heightened police presence? Too many practitioners fall into the trap that negligent security tragedies were caused, in whole or part, by an absence of sufficient security.
We recently obtained a $12 million verdict in a wrongful death case (Machado v. The Waves of Hialeah) against the owner/operator of a rent-by-the-hour motel in Hialeah, Florida. By all accounts, there had been no history of homicide or rape at the motel. The subject and the victim were strangers to each other, and at the time of her attack, the victim had a blood alcohol reading well above the legal limit for driving. The Defendant relied heavily on the absence of prior sexual batteries and murders or attempted murders, and argued that surveillance video showed a consensual sexual encounter gone tragically wrong. They further argued that even though they had no “real” prior crime, they did the responsible thing and provided a dedicated security guard to patrol the property. (News Coverage of Case)
Through discovery, and until the last day of trial, the defendant maintained laser focus on a paint-by- numbers defense to negligent security lawsuits. First, low crime. Second, a drunk victim. Third, a video arguably showing initial consent to sexual activity. Fourth, they had a security guard. Finally, the criminal who committed the act was so outrageously violent and demented, that no reasonable owner/manager should have foreseen that a person walking calmly around the premises would turn into a madman in the blink of an eye.
In preparation for trial, we closely examined all of the surveillance footage produced by the Defendant’s own CCTV systems. While there were several excerpts both sides used extensively, there were also very long, boring, and seemingly uneventful times where nothing appears to be happening. Staring at a tv screen watching a hallway, where the most interesting thing shows a man pushing a cart down a hallway, getting out a mop, and loading bath towels onto a cart is not exciting stuff – unless that man is actually the claimed security guard.
On cross examination at trial, the owner of the motel admitted he had never seen his security officer doing the kind of housekeeping shown in the video, which was taken at the same time our client was being beaten to death on the edge of the parking lot. After the 5-day trial, the jury returned its $12,000,000 verdict, and found no comparative fault upon the victim or anyone else, a point which meant far more to our clients than the financial result. Sometimes, a negligent security case can be as much about negligent management and inattention to critical details. Mismanagement can indeed create an inadequately secured environment, as was the case at The Waves. In other instances, as with the broad daylight murder of a Marine Corp veteran at an otherwise completely safe complex in Plantation whose widow we proudly represented, the failure can be on the defendant’s failure to actually read the background checks of one of its tenants, who harbored a dangerous relative. Just a few lines from a third party subpoena to the tenant screening provider in Texas took that case in a whole new direction, and saved a very difficult case from otherwise problematic foreseeability and preventability problems.
Many Paths to Justice
With negligent security cases, the avenues to a successful outcome are as varied as the clients and circumstances themselves. The path to ruin is equally diverse, and usually follows an evaluation and case strategy that presumes from the beginning that there is a simple formula to follow. Sizes: The inside of each ReloCube measures 70” x 82” x 93” and is capable of holding up to 2,500 pounds – or roughly one full room of furniture and boxes. Payment flexibility: Not sure how many moving containers you’ll need for your move? U-Pack offers a particularly flexible way to pay for your moving container.
