Age of Empires 2 was published by microsoft and featured heavily in TV advertisements for windows PCs, has been remastered twice, has a Microsoft backed e-sports league, recieved a widely marketed sequel specifically attempting to aesthetically call back to it, and is still recieving patches and expansions after 25 years*.....
#*after a break of about 10#obscure??? people are getting younger every year#wait theres other people in the notes who think the kind of shitty 3d sequel (aoe4) IS the remaster#the remaster (definitive edition. hd was earlier) is good its exactly the same game! sprite based! just less crispy#in fact this gif is almost certainly HE#*DE

What makes an RTS
First I will start with Medieval total war 2. I have over 3500 hours on this game so I know pretty much everything about this game.
Medieval I would say is split into 2 things, the first being the turn based grand campaign map. I will not be implementing this into my game. The next part of it is the real time strategy part of it, the battles that take place are a masterpiece (mostly) it features many things like unit selection and movement. it also has the overhead camera that can zoom in and out.
Another thing is that they have multiple unit types. this includes cavalry, infantry, archers and artillery. Then in each category they have different types such ad swordsmen or spearmen for example. This allows for lots of tactics to be used. One example of this would be that spearmen counter horses very well but don't do well against swordsmen. Another example of this is that if there are siege weapons attacking units, they can do lots of damage so you may choose you send a unit of light horsemen to wipe them out at the cost of loosing the horsemen. Also you then have character units that unlike other games actually is a unit. The unit given is a heavy feudal knights unit. Early game these are exceptionally strong. Another thing it feature is the menu at the bottom. Tis displays units, commands, time management and a mini map.
The next game I will look at is age of empires.
This is the classic RTS game
youtube
in AOE4 you have to control your people to harvest basic resources, explore and build, Different buildings then do different things like how when you make farms you have more food so you can sustain more people. It is about balancing supply and demand.
You can then grow into building a military and fight opponents.
There are also lots of tactics play, an example of this is at 2.50 in the video. There are a unit of pikemen hidden in the trees, they then ambush the oncoming cavalry from both sides.
It also features defensive buildings such as walls to keep the enemy out or forcing them to a kill box.
I really like the more open world feature of exploring and clearing the FOW (fog of war). I think it is smart in how the more valuable resources are placed away from the starting areas forcing the players to fight to progress further in the game. I do think that that could be a slippery slope with balancing issues. If one player starts to get a head start then they may control everything meaning that the other players/ players can't progress.
I also think it is really important when making the map to consider what each spawn area has and has around it. While it is understandable giving everyone the same start resources that may make the game become boring after a few playthroughs.

Right now I've been looking into cool and underrated mechanics. Things that I like to see in play more often if they were just a tiny bit more viable to use.

Note
I'd probably prefer the medieval aoe. How's that one?
pretty good. still a popular game actually. but it definitely shews its age. 2001. aoe4 is also medieval but its been a bit divisive. i cant say how well it plays but i cant say i have much interest. the sleek modern corporate ui doesnt help. i like my games to be a little more atmospheric.

I think what frustrates me most about my last aoe4 match was not just how quickly I was defeated, nor how I didn’t even see the attack coming because I got misdirected by a diversionary naval landing. No, it’s because I was playing as the Chinese, built a dope ass defensive network including a sick ass well maintained wall (some might even go so far as to call it great) and then got beat by a Mongol player. Bro you are a history major how did you let this happen. You should have known better.

I played prairie in a aoe 4 quick match the only resource other than my 1 starting sheep in my tc (town center) los (line of sight) was a small wood line and i had 1 nearby berry patch had to go half way across the map to get gold which is a resource I would need to advance suffice to say I lost the game really badly
