hey! i'd love to jump on the marvel bandwagon but i have no idea where to start. what movies should i watch & in which order? help! x
Hello Nonny!! And thank you for asking me this - made my day, really :D
Well - the first thing I’ll ask is do you have a favorite character, or a character you want to know more about? Cause, let’s say you want to know more about Captain America - I’d sit and watch all the Cap movies, or movies that he’s in.  If, however, you’d like to experience things beyond a single character well then ---
SO’s Guide to the MCU:
So, these are in chronological order - the order they were released, and this is the order I suggest you watch things in.  They kind of flow into each other really nicely.  Note: There are also a bunch of TV shows, too, but I haven’t watched any of them, nor do you really need to for an understanding of the movie universe.  So, here we go:
Phase One:
Iron Man - This movie kicked the whole thing off in 2008 and is the story about Tony Stark becoming Iron Man. Tony Stark is a billionaire who sells weapons for a living, but when he’s kidnapped and nearly killed, he rethinks his life’s priorities. It’s a solidly good movie, and I do recommend starting here as it lays the foundation for everything that comes after it.  It also kind of gives you a feel for how Marvel movies run, so you can get an idea if this type of movie is your thing or not.
The Incredible Hulk - Not to be confused with the (supposedly) awful film from 2003 named Hulk.  This version of Hulk is not much better, and it i the one film that I recommend skipping over entirely unless you really want to see everything.  Hulk is gonna be recast for Avengers anyway, so there’s not really anything here that connects to the rest of the MCU, and it’s not really that good of a film in the first place.  FWIW - Bruce Banner created a serum that accidentally turns him into the Hulk, and that’s pretty much it.
Iron Man 2 - The continued adventures of Tony Stark and Iron Man.  This movie gets a lot of crap, but I don’t think it’s all that bad.  It’s not necessary if you want to hit the highlights, but if you enjoy Iron Man, I do recommend it.  It also introduces Black Widow.
Thor - Oh, Thor. Thor is a demi-god, based on Norse Myth, who lives in a place called Asgard and has a magic hammer named Mjolnir.  If you want to do your homework before watching the Avengers then I do recommend this - even if it’s a middling film.  Thor and Loki’s relationship is one of the highlights of the MCU, so that alone makes this film worth a watch.  Also, there’s a brief introduction to Hawkeye.  However, it’s not necessary, as I made it all the way to a few weeks ago without seeing it and managed to understand everything just fine.
Captain America: The First Avenger - Captain America is original just a scrawny kid named Steve Rogers who just wants to do good in the world. The Cap movies are slightly better than the Iron Man and and a lot better than the Thor films, so I’m going to recommend all of them.  This one is also is a solidly good film, it’s a nice intro to Cap, gives some background and depth to the MCU, and sets up The Avengers.  Plus Peggy Carter.
The Avengers - Avengers, which brings together Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, is possibly one of my all time favorite films, and I definitely recommend it over everything else in phase one.  If you are a little iffy about whether or not you’ll like the MCU - maybe start here, and see if you like the characters, then go back and watch their origin stories if you are interested.
Phase Two:
Iron Man 3 - The continuing adventure of Iron Man.  It’s a bit wonky, but Tony’s story is really compelling as he struggles with PTSD.  I think if you’re an Iron Man film, it’s worth the watch, but maybe not if you aren’t as interested in his character.
Thor: The Dark World - Like the first one, this film struggles a bit, and also like the first one, the only redeeming thing about this film is Thor and Loki’s relationship.  It is pretty skippable if Thor isn’t your thing.
Captain America: Winter Soldier - The best film in phase two, it’s Cap and Black Widow against the government in this high stakes political thriller.  It’s a well done film that has ramifications on the entire MCU, so I definitely recommend it!
Guardians of the Galaxy - This is the MCU’s version of Star Wars, complete with scrappy characters.  It’s mostly about Starlord, who comes from Earth and was abducted at a young age.   Space stories aren’t my cup of tea, but this film is well done, funny, and sets up a ton of stuff that will be played out in later films.  I recommend at least seeing it once so you know who these guys are because they will be back.
Avengers 2 - I’ll be upfront, it’s not as good as Avengers 1, but there are some good things in it.  And it’s the whole crew back together again, which is always fun.  I do recommend seeing it at least once since it introduces some important characters and plots that get carried into phase 3.
Ant-Man - Ant-Man is Scott Lang, a down and out criminal, who is recruited by a scientist to steal back some technology.  This film is mostly stand alone, but it’s a fun little heist-comedy.  It’s not needed for the greater understanding of the MCU, though there are nuggets in here, but if you want a light-hearted film to watch one evening, I do recommend it!
Phase 3:
Captain America: Civil War - Don’t let the title fool you, this is really Avengers 3.  I love this film since it explores the various dynamics among the Avengers - especially getting into the heart of Tony and Cap.  But even if you’re upset that it’s not fully a Cap movie, I strongly recommend this one since this film sets up so much going forward and will be referenced a lot in other movies.
Doctor Strange - Strange is an unusual character that represents the mystic side of Marvel comics.  He’s a surgeon who’s wrecked his hands, so he’s forced to find new ways to heal and stumbles upon some seriously weird mystic shit.  It’s a solid film, but I wouldn’t say that it’s a stand out.  If you’re interested in Strange and his beginnings, or just a Benedict Cumberbatch fan, I’d say check it out! But it’s not really a necessity.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - I’ll be honest with, I had a hard time getting through this movie.  If you’re a fan of space stories, or just really like GOTG and its characters, I’d say watch it - but feel free to skip if it’s not your thing.  It’s not really that good of a movie.
Spider-Man Homecoming - I’ll be honest, I’m biased and love Spider-Man, so this is an automatic yes for me.  Peter Parker’s just your average high school kid who got bit by a spider and has super powers.  (Though, I’m assuming you know this partially since most people know about Spider-Man.)  If you watched Civil War and found Peter Parker endearing - yes check it out! It doesn’t have a lot of bearing on the MCU as a whole, but it’s a fun, low stakes, high school story that I think is worth watching.
Thor: Ragnarok - Finally a Thor film that’s good! Yes, I whole-heartedly recommend this film.  It’s a great comedy, and finally gives Thor some good character development.  It also has a lot of influence on Thor’s character going forward.
Black Panther - Black Panther is the king of Wakanda - an advanced African country, who keeps its borders closed to the outside world.  Another definite yes! Like Spider-Man, if you found Black Panther interested in Civil War, check this one out! It’s incredibly solid, has really engaging characters, and is more thematically complex than a lot of MCU movies.  I recommend it!
Avengers: Infinity War - This film is a masterpiece of everything that’s come before it.  If you can watch it in a theater - I do recommend doing it that way for the experience.  However, it does rest on the shoulders of everything that’s come before it, so it may not have the same weight if you haven’t seen most of the rest of the MCU.
Upcoming Phase 3 -
Stuff that’s not been released yet
Ant-Man and Wasp - After the heaviness of IW, I think this will be a fun little adventure story and already looks worth checking out.
Captain Marvel - MCU finally gets their act together and has a female character as their lead.  This should be interesting, especially since Captain Marvel will probably play a big role in Avengers 4
Avengers 4 - The conclusion of Avengers 3, and the finale of the first three phases.  It’ll be interesting to see how all of this pans out, and will set the stage for anything that comes after it.
So, there you go, Nonny, hopefully this helps a little bit!  Honestly, the only film that I straight up don’t recommend is Hulk -- but like I said first, I’d stick to following characters you enjoy if you feel a bit overwhelmed by everything.  If you want more information, let me know!

Zenith: Chapter 5
Andi turned on her com. “Breck, Gilly .” The permanent lens in her eye, activated by a light tap to her temple, allowed her to patch into another crew member’s visual feed.
So ... There was no indication of Gilly or Breck allowing this connection, meaning that Andi can just ... randomly watch her crew members take a piss in first person if she wishes to, I guess? How exactly does this work? Are they even alerted when this happens, or can she just creep on them? Can they do it to her or is this tied to rank?
This also sounds like an extremely intrusive surgery that would probably require altering your actual brain in one way or another, but it’s waved away as “an expensive visit to [a] shady doctor.” Who in their right mind would trust a shady doctor to do this to them?
Alright. Whatever. This is soft sci-fi, so I guess I don’t care too much.
Andi orders them to shoot the smaller ships and somehow take out both at once.
Gilly answered with a giggle sharp as a knife. “Done.”
Bad.
An old spacesuit floated past the window to her right, and Andi hoped a corpse wasn’t still inside.
... Why would you hope that? How could you possibly hope that? Does she think the corpse just ... vanished? Does she think the person was sucked out through a tiny hole like some sort of corpse-juice? The chances of a corpse NOT being there are lower because they’re in space, where not even bacteria would help with the decomposition.
What the fuck am I reading ...
Update: An old spacesuit floated past the window to her right. Andi wondered if a corpse was still inside and shivered slightly.
Why did they change this ... The meaning is pretty much the same.
Death was Andi’s closest friend, a little demon that whispered in her ear on dark nights. And here in this wasteland, a graveyard where many had met their demise, death felt closer than ever.
Tumblr media
A massive, hulking rock appeared ahead of them, easily the largest asteroid in the belt.
“Lira,” Andi said, a plan brewing in her mind as she pointed at the asteroid, “circle us around that thing.”
“Circling will slow us down.” Lira cocked her head, her blue skin stained with flashes of white as the single star in the distance came into view.
1) How do you just know it’s the largest asteroid in the belt? Have you seen every rock in the belt? You know those can be the size of a small planet, yes?
2) So if circling would slow them down ... what exactly was Lira planning to do? I mean, I guess death by asteroid collision would be quick, but surely not ideal.
3) WE KNOW SHE’S BLUE.
Update: The comment about Lira’s blueness has been changed and is no longer there, thank fike.
Anyway, apparently they’re doing this so that the bigger ship will slow down and the smaller ones will get ahead so that the Marauder will get a clearer shot.
What was the plan? Even if the two seekers Explorers caught them and tried to dock, with ships that small, they wouldn’t be able to haul the Marauder across the skies.
Well, presumably the “Tracker” isn’t out of the fight, you fucking idiot, it’s still following, just slower. They take you down quick, then -- because you can’t flee -- they just wait for the Tracker to catch up before they dock.
I swear to god ...
They shoot the seeker Explorer ships and of course they get both in one shot because whatever, except this time Andi feels bad about it, I guess?
Andi stared at the Explorer ships on the rear-cam, thinking of the men and women inside. Knowing that here and now, they were facing their final moments. She felt a flash of pity for them, the pang of regret Andi always felt before she took a life.
Uh. What’s the point of this? She can’t both be the Bloody Baroness, biggest badass in the galaxy, ruthless murderess extraordinaire, and try to squeeze sympathy points out of the reader. Because you can’t commit to one or the other, Shinsay, your character ends up being a pointless nothing, too fucking bland to have a personality.
The Marauder whined as the blast knocked it off course, as if the dying ships had laind bleeding hands on them and shoved.
So here we have another indication that the Marauder is pretty but completely useless. The fact that it gets knocked off course implies that it’s light, which in combination with the extra shielding needed, means that the glass it’s made out of is light but fragile as fuck. Which makes no fucking sense considering that it’s established to be impenetrable.
“Take us to the center of the Belt. Bigger asteroids.”
Bigger than the one you just said was the biggest one in the belt?
Lira caught on. “We can lose them there, and fly out the backside, hide somewhere on Solera.”
Why are you catching on just now? Wasn’t this your plan? What the fuck is happening?
“Fuel?” Lira spat a wad of Chew into her mug. “Low. But we can make it. We just lost a lot of weight from that ammo.”
*spittakes*
NOW HOLD ON A MOMENT.
ARE YOU TELLING ME ... THAT THIS SHIP IS SO LIGHT, AND SO BADLY DESIGNED, THAT ITS SPEED IS DEPENDENT ON ITS WEIGHT, AND THE AMMO FOR YOUR GUNS IS SO HEAVY, THAT FIRING YOUR GUNS ACTUALLY MAKES YOUR SHIP FASTER OR MAKES IT USE LESS FUEL?
WHO DESIGNED THIS SHIP? A BUNCH OF GIBBONS?! IS IT MADE OF FUCKING TINFOIL AND POWERED BY WISHES AND FARTS?!
Breck and Gilly’s voices shouted into the com, and somewhere, down in the pit of Andi’s dark soul, she knew she’d missed something.
DOWN IN THE PIT OF ANDI’S DARK SOUL
I’m crying.
Seven ships waited for them, uncloaking themselves, materializing before her, like eyes in the darkness.
WHY !! WOULD YOU !! UNCLOAK!!
You could argue that once the proximity alarms went off, there was no reason to be cloaked, but the enemy ships DON’T KNOW THAT. Andi needed clear visuals on the ships themselves to be able to know when to shoot. If she can’t SEE the damn ships, she won’t be able to shoot them down.
This is just for the convenience of the protagonist, isn’t it?
The ship itself seemed to release a deep, rumbling sigh.
And then...darkness.
The only light came from Lira’s scales, glowing a bluish-purple in the dark.
Oh, Godstars.
Andi’s pale, glowing eyes were the only light inside the small space.
No.
They’d been hit by an EMP. Andi watched as Lira tried to repower the ship with the backup system but to no avail.
Everything went still and silent, as if the Marauder itself lost all life beneath them.
It seems that Shinsay is trying to compensate for removing that “Lira is blue” comment from earlier.
Also, this EMP is powerful enough to shut down a single, specific ship from a distance without damaging anything else in its pathway/area of effect, somehow, and Andi knows that this is a thing (and hasn’t tried to install anything to counteract it), yet still this is the first time they’ve been caught?
I smell bullshit. It would’ve made more sense if Dex had hacked their controls somehow, since this used to be his ship after all. I don’t know how they managed to make things worse instead of better.
Oh fuck me, nevermind, there are countermeasures installed (those dumb metal shields). But you see, Dex’s EMP worked because it’s special. He kissed it and wrote his name on it and gave it a little love tap on the ass, I assume.
This just ... keeps getting dumber.
Andi tries to go for the escape pods, but Lira tells her that when the ship is dead, the escape pods are, “logically,” also pretty dead. Which Andi should know, because she’s the captain of the ship, but WHATEVER.
How else do we get that info to the reader, right? Also, what?
WHAT KIND OF SHITTY ESCAPE PODS ARE THESE?!
SO WHAT, IF YOUR SHIP GETS BLASTED AND THE POWER SHUTS OFF, YOU’RE JUST STUCK THERE? ESCAPE PODS SHOULD HAVE THEIR OWN POWER SUPPLY, SEPARATE FROM THE SHIP ITSELF.
THAT’S THE POINT OF ESCAPE PODS, THEY WORK WHEN THE SHIP DOESN’T.
HOLY SHIT.
I would get if the EMP killed the escape pods, I guess, but here it’s framed as if the power of the escape pods depend on the power of the ship, which is just ... bad.
“I don’t want to be taken again,” Gilly whispered. Gone was the bloodthirsty little fairy. In its place was a frightened, tiny young girl.
Great. All this wank about how amazing and badass Gilly is, and now we get this garbo. Strong independent murderess until ONE THING goes wrong (which they should fucking expect as supposedly badass space pirates at this point), then it’s time to fucking crumble.
[Breck] whispered soothing words, but Andi didn’t hear them. She wasn’t listening.
Mm-hmm. We got that when you said she didn’t hear them.
Fear spiked through her, in and around, threatening to still freeze her, just like the ship.
But she was the Bloody Baroness. She was the captain of the Marauder, the greatest starship in Mirabel, and she had a crew waiting on her word.
I can’t believe this book is still wanking on about how great the ship and Andi are when we just spent four chapters watching them fail and get captured.
I would say it’s Andi being an overconfident idiot, but I doubt Shinsay know what an unreliable narrator is or how to properly use one.
The girls lined up, side by side. Andi with her swords, Gilly with her revolver gun. Breck unveiled a nasty black short-whip that crackled with light. Lira simply stood with her fists clenched, appearing weaponless to the ones those who did not know the ways in which her body could move, lithe as a predator on the hunt.
Swords? Whips? FISTS?
These bitches are fiked. Or would be, if this book made any goddamn sense.
Anywhoo, the Patrolmen board their ship, and drama happens.
Arcardian or not, she’d see the badges of those who wouldn’t back down stained with blood. It was her crew or her past and—her soul be damned—she would always choose her crew .
Yeah, their friendships are just seeping off the page like some sort of platonic goo.
She didn’t see him right away, but as he approached, her chest seized at the outline of him, tall and muscular and perfectly proportioned to win a fight.
As he approached, Andi’s chest tightened at the sight of him, tall and muscular and perfectly honed for fighting.
It’s him, said a small, frightened voice in her mind.
Then, Aas if confirming her suspicions, he stepped out of the darkness like a demon emerging from hell.
IT’S DEX DOGTECTIVE!
How the fuck is one “perfectly honed for fighting?” What does that even mean? Do you know how many types of fighting there are? Is he a featherweight MMA fighter or a sumo wrestler? You’re not being awfully specific here.
We find out through some clichĂ©d dialogue and Andi’s thoughts that they used to be lovers, but the some sort of betrayal happened and she left him to die.
She remembered every inch of the angular white constellation tattoos twisting their way across his brown skin, the feel of his strong hands on her body.
Sasha, you might try to be less obvious with how much crap you’re swiping from SJM. I mean we all know you’re doing it but could you at least try to pretend you’re not? For the sake of at least looking like you put some effort into this?
Andi’s katanas swords crackled, purple light arcing around the fierce blades.
How anime is this?
“I’m going to kill you,” Andi whispered.
“You can try,” Dex said, and shrugged again shrugging, those demonic black his once-captivating brown eyes sparkling with laughter. “But we both know how that will turn out.”
She screamed and charged straight at him., Nnot giving a damn if there were twenty or even one hundred heavily armed men Arcardian soldiers blocking her path.
She was going to drown Dex Arez in his own blood.
Drama.

Tales from Saturday RP
With a break in our usual A Song of Ice and Fire game, R, who plays Ser Percy ‘Big Train’ Clearwater, offered to run an Arcanis one-shot using their 5th Ed D&D version. Only N - Anthor ‘Shit-Heel’ Waterman - and R had ever played any Arcanis before and that was the older version using their own rulset, so we weren’t sure what to expect. At this point, @thewenglishwarlock has been running 5th Ed. longer than time itself has existed and would have probably chewed off her own arm to get a game of it, even if it was a F.A.T.A.L 5th Ed. conversion. Ok, maybe not, but you never know.
Anyway, I’ve no idea what pre-written adventure it was that R ran, but there will be spoilers ahead.
The group is quite a diverse group Race-wise, Class-wise we’re fairly typical for a D&D party.
Ai'konu'tlax-Ga ‘Lash’ - my Ss’ressen male Barbarian. I didn’t know too much about the setting so used a Warhammer Fantasy lizardman name generator for him, giving him a slightly Aztec sounding name. He wears very little clothing - Natural Armour + moderate Dex is always fun - and fights mostly with his tail. He carries a khopesh, but has only used that for clearing vines and plants, machete style. I was talked into Barbarian as it’s not something I ever really think of playing in games. Although I had GRAM in Shadow of the Demonlord who had some similarities here - they’re both 7+ feet tall, hulking brutes - I chose this guy to offset the amount of talking Garrick is doing in ASoIaF, whilst avoiding my usual roles of Magic, Stealth, or Magic/Stealth.
Sabine - @usmelinuk‘s Val’Sheem Bard. The Val are basically the settings equivalent of Aasimar. She wanted a character that was a bit more talky, and Bard is great for talky, lots of Skills, and has the added bonus of magic abilities. To top it all off, being a Val noble, she has access to the flintlock weaponry, so is running around with a fancy little pistol.
Gwella - @thewenglishwarlock‘s Dwarf - I want to say Solani(?) enclave - Cleric of the Grave Domain. A tiny, and somewhat naive, healer off out exploring the wider world. Servant to the Goddess of the Underworld, yadda-yadda.
Khangir - human Rogue, part swashbuckler, part duel-wielding mercenary. A northerner out for adventure and coin.
Theren - a Kelekene elorri wizard- NotElves! although they are more ‘Primal’ in their heritage. The two elorri in the Quickstart are Life and Fire, the Kelekene being the latter of the two. Seems knowledgeable about many things, although perhaps not quite so well travelled as others in the group.
We’re introduced to each other - although Lash has been serving as Sabine’s bodyguard and retainer for some time - inside the yurt of the leader of the Ying-hir - NotMongols! of the setting - who believes his son has been killed during a coming-of-age ceremony in the wastes to the west. He had sacrificed himself, apparently in an attempt to distract marauding beasts that had attacked the group of boys, allowing the others to flee to safety, returning to the Ying-hir to tell the tale.
Supplied with travelling rations, the group heads out on the trail of his son. The journey is uneventful to begin with, the group slowly getting to know each other during the travel. On the horizon, several days out, a single dead tree sits in the wasteland, an iron cage hanging from one of the boughs.
Suspicious, Lash and Khangir scouted ahead, allowing the others to hang back, their ranged weapons drawn and at the ready. Satisfied there are no immediate dangers, everyone regrouped at the cage. Inside, a robed, unconscious human, his hands cut off and the stumps crudely cauterised. Lowering the cage to the floor allowed Gwella the chance to tend to his wounds, calling on her Goddess - Beltine, the Goddess of Afterlife - she managed to rouse the human, many of his wounds healing before our eyes.
Waking, he explained he was an etzara - a spirit talker. In lands that are aggressively patrolled by the servants of Ymandragore, the Sorcerer-King, seeking out Arcane spellcasters, he took a great risk. Sadly, whilst it was not the harvesters who encountered him, he had still run afoul of those that took offence to his practices. Witch hunters, of which faith he didn’t seem to know, but he remembered vividly their pure white armour. They had demanded he renounce his heresy, and turn away from it. Refusing repeatedly, the pair of white-armoured witch hunters, hacked his hands off, and locked him into the iron cage, leaving him to die in the arid hinterlands.
Angry at this act, we made sure the etzara was loaded with supplies and sent him on his way, whilst we continued on our hunt for the missing Ying-hir boy.
Sometime later, sounds of growling and chattering could be heard of a nearby rise. Charging over the low-rise, a bunch of hyena headed creatures are chattering to themselves, beside them and buried up to his neck is a man, his white armour scattered around the area/. The body of another man, clad in white armour lies dead a short distance away.
The battle is short, and painful for Lash, taking several painful blows from a pair of the hyena beasts, thankfully the Dwarfen Cleric of of Beltine ensures he doesn’t visit her Halls before his time, and the group free the buried man.
A lot of arguing occurs, Sabine and Lash both think he should be put to death, Lash because he views him as a coward, and torturer, and Sabine for justice for his actions to the etzara. Ultimately, the group allows him to go free, burying his comrade. Glares, and dark thoughts plague the group as we all agree to rescue the missing boy before deciding whether we should part ways.
Eventually, we find the cave the boy was last seen running towards, it is marked by tattered strips of cloth and other decoration, the symbolism lost on our ignorant group. Clambering up the rocky slope, we venture in.
Inside, a small living space has been created, another robed man and a Ying-hir boy waiting for us. The man, another etzara explains the boy took shelter here after being chased by giant panthers. The boy, is the Ying-hir tribal leader’s son, but explains how he is ‘dead’, crossing the tattered banners a huge taboo for his people. The boy is given a choice, remain with the etzara as an apprentice - he seems quite keen on it - or flee into exile. Unsurprisingly he chooses the apprenticeship route, giving the group his familial ring, he asks us to pass it to his father as proof of ‘death’.
Heading outside, we’re confronted by a trio of panthers, one significantly larger than the others. Although some way off, they’re clearly waiting for us to descend, something about the ave an the banners keeping them away.
A ferocious battle ensues, slashes, pounces and tail-whips abound. Inevitably, we triumph, Lash taking the head of the largest panther as a token for the Ying-hir leader, small recompense for the ‘death’ of his son at the paws of the beast.
Our return is uneventful, the ring and head are received gratefully, and a reward of a Ying-hir riding horse - a princely gift - is provided to each of us.
With little reason to remain in the Hinterlands, we head south, although not necessarily as a group, to Milandir, Lash’s birthplace, and more civilised lands.
A quick introduction into Arcanis, it was ok. I had overestimated how good 18 A.C. was going to be at level 1, and as I’m the kind of player who gets to final section of a CRPG toting more potions than any 35,000 people could carry, I’d heavily rationed by Barbarian Rages, this lead to the slightly embarrassing situation of being taken down to 0 H.P. in our first fight. On the plus side, I’ve learnt from my mistakes and will be a bit less stingy with Rages in future.
The issue with the Witchhunter did lead to some serious IC arguing and some OOC wondering about whether this party had the cohesion most of our RP groups do, but thankfully we’re still all adventuring together, at least for now.
