Finland's public healthcare and social services system has seen rapidly mounting budget deficits ever since a reform at the start of 2023 shifting responsibility from municipalities to regional counties.

On Monday evening, Finance Minister Riikka Purra (Finns) called the social and healthcare reform a failure, but told Yle that the current government neither intends nor is capable of making radical changes to the system.

The Uutissuomalainen news group reports that Antti Kurvinen (Cen), the chair of the opposition party Centre Party's parliamentary group, says his party is ready to sit down at the same table with the government to think about how the financing of services can be put in order.

Kurvinen has now proposed setting up a parliamentary working group to look at ways to secure funding healthcare and social services.

However, he rejected suggestions that merging smaller welfare counties would bring operational savings, and pointed out that the biggest budget deficits being seen are in the larger regions.

Kurvinen also criticised the government of PM Petteri Orpo (NCP) for turning its back on the system, describing it as "indifferent and passive".

According to Kurvinen, the government is blaming the welfare counties for deficits while at the same time cutting their funding.

Russian spokesperson: Finnish exercises hostile

Iltalehti reports that Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova on Wednesday described upcoming Finnish military exercises, and recent statements by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo as "hostile steps".

The paper points to a report from Russian news agency Tass, which quotes Zakharova as saying "the statements of the Finnish prime minister, which essentially justify the terrorist attacks of Ukrainian neo-Nazis on the Kursk Region, have not gone unnoticed. And it is in this context that we view the exercises of the Finnish Army near the Russian borders."

Regarding Finnish manoeuvrers scheduled for late this month, Zakharova added that Russia views these "in the context of other hostile steps taken by Helsinki", and linked them to what she described as a hybrid war being waged against Russia by "the collective West".

Neo-Nazi trial opens

Hufvudstadsbladet is among the papers carrying a report on the opening of the trial of two men charged with offences committed with terrorist intent, and three other with various related offences.

The five, all members of a neo-Nazi group based in the town Kankaanpää, were in Satakunta District Court on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

According to the indictment, the police found almost 40 kg of dynamite, 5 kg of gunpowder and various firearms in the possession in the possession of one of the accused, who is also charged with making explosives from ammonium nitrate.

According to the prosecution, the defendants had embraced an accelerationist ideology, aimed at bringing about a "race war" through acts of terrorism. Police have stated that the men planned a bomb attack on a refugee centre in Niinisalo. Two of the accused are also charged with assaults targeting a Jewish man and a transgender individual.

The five men are facing over twenty different charges in total. The offences were committed between 2018 and 2023.

The trial is to resume in October.

Free flowers

Helsingin Uutiset reports that the fields of Haltiala Farm, an agricultural estate owned and operated by the City of Helsinki have been crowded in recent days.

As in past years, those fields on the northwestern edge of the capital have been turned over to sunflowers, cornflowers and mallows.

The public can pick these flowers free-of-charge for personal use.

The fields are also a popular picturesque spot for taking selfies, which HU says have spread through social media, bringing more and more pickers to the fields.

On a visit to the fields, HU found the access road lined by cars and even briefly blocked by a tow truck rescuing a car from a ditch.

The paper writes that even as the sun sets, hundreds of people can still be seen in the fields, and those just leaving with armloads of fresh flowers.

Nyt pysähdyn miettimään mitä digitaalinen liiketoiminta oikeastaan on. Onko se minulle “selvää kuin kaura”. Digitaalisessa liiketoiminnassa yrityksen tulee hallita mielestäni kaksi aluetta hyvin ja ne ovat digitaalinen liiketoiminta ja liiketoimintaympäristö.

Digitaalinen liiketoiminta on avannut ovensa usealle yritykselle maailmanlaajuisesti. Pienet yritykset, ketkä olisivat mahdollisesti sulkeneet ovensa hyvin nopeasti, ovat digitaalisuutensa ansiosta mahdollistaneet sen, että heidät tunnetaan maailmanlaajuisesti helpommin. Antti Pietilä sanookin omassa blogissaan hienosti: 

Digitaalinen liiketoiminta on globaalia liiketoimintaa. 

Pidän tästä lauseesta paljon. Se kertoo ja kiteyttää sen mitä yrityksien tulisi heti ensimmäisenä ajatella luodessaan itseään ja olemustaan. Globaali liiketoiminta taas edellyttää sen että yritys on valmis satsaamaan panoksia digitaalisuuteen, sosiaaliseen mediaan, prosesseihin, omaan osaamiseensa ja osaamisensa/tuotteensa esiin tuomiseen.  

Digitaalinen murros

Antti Kurvinen Accenturelta sanoi vuonna 2014: 

Digitaalisuuden valtava murros vaikuttaa suomalaiseen yhteiskuntaan, kaikkiin toimialoihin, yrityksiin, arvoketjuihin ja prosesseihin. Vaikutus on erilainen ”itsestään selvästi digitaalisilla” toimialoilla verrattuna kone- ja laitevalmistajiin, prosessiteollisuuteen tai julkishallintoon.

Nykypäivänä oletetaan että jokainen yritys on hyvin hereillä digitaalisuutensa kanssa. Kaikki tulee oleva saatavilla digitaalisesti, käyttöohjeistä lähtien, niin autoista - paistinpannuun. 

Digitaalisen murroksen haasteet ovat nousseen hyvin vahvasti esiin vaikkapa vuonna 2014 ja silti vieläkin vuonna 2019 puhutaan digitaalisuuden haasteista. Tästä voi päätellä sen, että digitaalisuus muuttaa muotoaan kokoajan ja yrityksien on pysyttävä muutoksen perässä. Liiketoiminta muuttaa muotoaan, kaikki pitää olla digitaalisesti saatavilla entistä helpommin, nopeammin ja paremmin, vaikka juuri nyt tuntuu siltä että “kaikkihan on tässä saatavilla”. Uskallan silti hyvin mielen todeta, että koskaan tässä maailmassa ei tulla olemaan valmiita. Mikään yritys ei voi  sanoa, että meidän digitaalinen liiketoiminta on nyt valmis, mitään ei tarvitse enää kehittää. Tuon lauseen sanoessaan, yritys on jäänyt jo jälkeen ja muiden digitaalinen liiketoiminta on mennyt heistä ohi.

Vaikka se onkin niin kulunut lause, se pitää silti paikkaansa digital transformation never ends - digitaalinen maailma, ei koskaan lopeta muuttamasta muotoaan. Aina tulee seuraava sukupolvi, jotka ketkä keksivät uuden digitaalisen muodon ja konseptin millä yritys toimii ja mitä se tarjoaa. Ja tottakai jossain vaiheessa varmasti digitaalinen liiketoiminta toistaa itseään, mutta siihen menee sen verran aikaa, että siinä vaiheessa tämä 2019 vuoden digitaalinen liiketoimintamalli  tuntuu taas uudelta ja toimivalta. 

Oletko sinä koskaan ajatellut sitä, että ehkä seuraava digitaalisuus onkin se että myydään ihmisille sitä, millaista olikin ennen kuin kaikki oli saatavilla digitaalisesti? 

Nyt pitää poistua tästä bittien avaruudesta ja palata oikeaan elämään.. eli tekemään ruokaa perheelle. :)

Ms Marin’s comments were simply stating an aspiration - so in short, you shouldn’t plan on moving to Finland if you’re looking for shorter working hours.

In August, her suggestion was met with opposition from some politicians, such as Arto Satonen (from the centre-right National Coalition Party) who tweeted in response: “Does the SDP live in the real world?”

Similarly, Antti Kurvinen, an MP for the Centre Party, said he did not believe a shorter working week was “a realistic idea in the short or medium term”.

“It does feel difficult to fund our well-being while reducing working time. Our problem is rather that there’s too much unemployment and working doesn’t pay,” Mr Kurvinen told the Finnish newspaper Uusi Suomi.

Most importantly, the government has made it very clear that it is not planning on introducing a four-day week in the near future.

Ms Marin is also unsurprisingly not going to comment on the issue again any time soon, according to Mr Anttikoski.

Valtio tutkii Altian listaamista Helsingin pörssiin. Vasemmistoliiton kansanedustaja Jari Myllykoski epäilee, ostaisiko pörssiyhtiö Altia enää juomien raaka-aineohran kotimaisilta sopimusviljelijöiltä.

“Veljeskansan kossu” eli Viru Valge menetti Estofennia-uutissivuston mukaan virolaisuutensa, kun sen tuotanto yksityistettiin 1996. Valmistaja siirtyi vuosituhannen vaihteessa tuontitisleisiin.

Komissio on nyt linjannut, ettei Viru Valge enää nauti EU:n nimisuojaa.

Virossa voidaan komission mukaan edelleenkin valmistaa vodkaa tuontialkoholista, mutta silloin siihen ei saa enää yhdistää määritelmää ”Estonian Vodka”. Tosin ilmaisut ”Vodka from Estonia” tai ”Vodka made in Estonia” ovat mahdollisia.

Oikea virolainen vodka on valmistettava Virossa virolaisesta vedestä ja Virossa kasvaneesta viljasta tai perunasta.

Vasemmistoliiton eduskuntaryhmän mielestä voittoa tuottavan alkoholiyhtiö Altian myymiselle ei ole perusteita.

– Vuonna 2014 silloisen hallituksen hanke Altian myyntivaltuuksien saamiseksi sai keskustan europarlamentaarikko Anneli Jäätteenmäen ehdottamaan uutta Pro Koskenkorva -liikettä kansallisomaisuutemme suojaamiseksi, Myllykoski muistuttaa.

– Ehkä nyt olisi aika uusia tämä vaade, hän ehdottaa.

Keskustan kauhavalainen kansanedustaja ja puolueensa varapuheenjohtaja Antti Kurvinen puolestaan kehottaa pohjalaisia valmistautumaan toimimaan, mikäli Altian listaus pörssiin toteutuu.

– Pohjalaisen elinkeinoelämän pitäisi yhdistää voimansa ja pyrkiä alkoholiyhtiön pääomistajaksi. Yhtiön yksityisiksi omistajiksi voisivat tulla eteläpohjalaiset yksityishenkilöt, yritykset ja maakunnan sijoittajat.

Kurvinen toivoo, että valtio voisi auttaa Altian maakunnallistamista järjestämällä suunnatun osakeannin Etelä-Pohjanmaalle ja Altian raaka-aineen toimittajille sekä yhtiön henkilöstölle.

Valtio omistaa Altian sataprosenttisesti. Selvitys listautumisesta valmistunee vuoden 2018 ensimmäisellä vuosipuoliskolla.

The government and two ministers are facing a confidence vote on Friday, Tampere-based Aamulehti and many other newspapers report.

Three of the main opposition parties tabled motions of no confidence on Wednesday during the Parliament's debate about the government's anti-racism statement.

The Social Democratic Party first released a statement expressing a lack of confidence towards Petteri Orpo's (NCP) government. The Green Party's parliamentary group endorsed the statement and added another motion of no confidence in Minister of Finance Riikka Purra (Finns). The Left Alliance tabled a motion of no confidence in Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman (Finns) while also expressing support towards the motions targeting the government and Minister Purra.

Meanwhile, the opposition Centre Party said on Thursday that it would give the government a "yellow card." Suomenmaa, the party's newspaper, clarified that this means the party will abstain from voting.

"The government's communication is good, but the commitment of the Finns Party MPs remained unclear. A yellow card will serve as a warning to the government," parliamentary Group Chair Antti Kurvinen (Centre) posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Sanna Marin's resignation reverberations

Multiple papers carry reports on former Prime Minister Sanna Marin's (SDP) announcement to resign as MP.

"Sanna Marin has had enough of Finland," Helsingin Sanomat (HS) said in an editorial headline.

According to the paper, Marin likely decided to call it quits after last spring's parliamentary elections. Marin could not envision herself as number two in PM Petteri Orpo's coalition, HS wrote, which is why she sought career opportunities on the international stage.

The paper noted that Marin's tenure as Prime Minister made her an international superstar. Marin herself said she had received job offers from a number of organisations as well as private companies. Ultimately, she chose to join the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change because the UK-based group shares her values.

Meanwhile, tabloid Ilta-Sanomat noted that Marin's decision may have disappointed the more than 35,000 people in the Pirkanmaa region who voted for her in April. The tabloid took to the streets of Tampere to gauge people's reactions.

"I think we would have still needed her. It is a difficult question whether this is voter betrayal. When a person receives an offer for something really good, it's hard to refuse," Tampere local Mervi Saarelainen told the paper.

"Somehow you could sense it. Marin had been in the background quite a lot, so she probably had some other job in her sights. It seems to me that it was unnatural for Marin to adapt to the role of an MP after being prime minister. This solution makes sense" another passerby, Jaro Asikainen, told the paper.

First snow in September?

Iltalehti reported that summer-like conditions will persist for a little while longer, thanks to a high-pressure front that has kept skies largely clear and temperatures warm.

The trend is set to continue this weekend, with people in many areas of Finland set to bask in above-20-degree temperatures.

"The nights have already begun to get cooler as the amount of solar radiation decreases by the day, but we still get a hint of summer in the afternoons," Foreca meteorologist Anna Latvala told the paper.

The meteorologist added that an approaching low-pressure front will bring rain next week, although temperatures will remain relatively mild.

But the season change is unavoidable. As the nights get cooler, it's also possible that some northern regions may see the first snowfall of the season this month

"Parts of Enontekiö will typically see their first snow this month, according to the average forecast for this time of the year. Sometimes it may even snow more widely," Latvala said.

Sestavte si skupinku osob pro bodystorming

Metodu můžete provádět i v kanceláři, ale v ideálním případě se vydejte na místo, kde problém řešíte. Sledujte, jak zde lidé komunikují a jak interagují s fyzickými předměty.

Vytvořte prototyp, nezapomeňte na rekvizity. Nemusí se jednat o složité a drahé věci, použijte karton, papíry a existující předměty v okolí.

Identifikujte role, které budou nezbytné pro pochopení produktu, služby nebo prostředí. Účastníci hrají jak role lidí (zákazník, uživatel), tak i fyzických předmětů (kávovar, počítač) i nehmotných součástí (software, internet). Důležité je, že i samotné rekvizity mohou cítit, myslet a vyjadřovat se.

Stanovte si pravidla bodystormingu a vzájemné komunikace.

Hrajte několik různých scénářů a postupně scénáře upravujte.

Na závěr sepište všechny podněty, které vás v průběhu napadly.

Příklady využití Bodystorming vyzkoušela Paula Te se svými spolužáky pro účely své diplomové práce na téma 3D modelování. Participanti si vyzkoušeli, jak by bylo možné interagovat s počítačem v konstrukčním programu, kdyby chtěli vyjádřit jednotlivé příkazy (např. duplikovat, odečíst) pomocí gest. Metodu lze využít také ve vzdělávání. V projektu Interaction, který se zabývá rozvojem středoškoláků v designovém myšlení, si vyzkoušeli pomocí bodystormingu představit pojem “mobilní”. Brian Smith z Drexelské University využil bodystorming v hledání souvislostí mezi chováním lidí s diabetem a jejich zdravotním stavem.

Agriculture Minister Antti Kurvinen (Cen) on Wednesday said that his ministry would not support a budget allotment of five million euros for the giant pandas at the Ähtäri Zoo.

In an interview with tabloid Iltalehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun), the zoo's CEO Arja Väliaho said she was disappointed by the news and feared that the pandas Lumi and Pyry can no longer be kept at the Zoo.

The pandas arrived to Finland in 2018 after Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to the Nordic country the previous year.

According to Väliaho, the zoo is in desperate need of more money to become a foundation, the same way Helsinki's Korkeasaari Zoo is organised.

Currently, caring for the pandas cost more than the money they bring in. In 2021, Ähtäri Zoo had an operating loss of 673,000 euros.

"They [the pandas] cost 1.5 million euros a year," Väliaho told IL.

Väliaho added that in light of the current situation, the only option is to return the pandas to China.

"It depends very much on the decision of our government, but everything looks like there will be no solution. We're disappointed and think we should throw in the towel and give up the pandas," Väliaho said.

The zoo's board is expected to meet soon to discuss the situation.

Tampere leaders react to rail report

Tampere-based Aamulehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun) covered the city's reaction to an extensive, but somewhat lukewarm, feasibility report on a proposed national rail overhaul known as 'Suomirata'.

Part of the project would boost Tampere's role as a rail hub, so some city leaders dismissed the report's economic and environmental concerns surrounding the initiative.

While the report does not make any recommendations about whether or not to proceed with the projects, it provides some material for decision-makers to consider.

"Finland needs connections," Tampere's mayor Anna-Kaisa Ikonen (NCP) told AL.

According to Ikonen, it is clear that the Helsinki-Tampere rail corridor is at capacity and needs to increase.

"Having cities connected to each other would be of great importance for the success of Finland as a whole," Ikonen said.

Coffee in the capital

Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) covered how much a cup of coffee costs in central Helsinki these days.

According to Statistics Finland, the price of a cup of coffee rose nationwide in September.

A survey of 12 cafes in central Helsinki found prices ranging from 3 to 4.50 euros.

HS wrote that the price of coffee has generally increased in restaurants and cafes in recent years, a trend that continued due to inflation.

Hospitality lobby Mara CEO, Timo Lappi, explained the background of the price hikes.

"The consumer price of coffee rose because the wholesale price of coffee bought by restaurants was 18 percent higher in September last year than at the same time a year earlier," he told HS

Lappi went on to list other factors that influenced the price of coffee.
