The Inaugural Manila Food and Wine Festival Kicks Off at The Westin Manila
Inspired by the success of the Cebu Food and Wine Festival which held its third annual edition last June, Our Awesome Planet, Resto PH, and the Department of Tourism launched the inaugural Manila Food and Wine Festival last July 14, 2023 at the Grand Ballroom of The Westin Manila.
The Hungry Kat was invited to join this annual event that will draw food and wine enthusiasts from across the country to celebrate the finest that Metro Manila and the NCR region has to offer. The two-week event will run from July 14 to 27, 2023 across several restaurants and hotels in Manila showcasing the exciting works of talented celebrity chefs, restaurateurs, and culinary icons.
The inaugural Manila Food and Wine Festival is a gastronomic tourism celebration presented by the Department of Tourism that is also co-presented by Shangri-La Plaza, Discovery Primea, and Admiral Hotel Manila. Guests arrived at The Westin Manila Grand Ballroom for a night of exquisite food and wine selections from some of the country's best establishments.
Joining the grand launch were special celebrity chefs, guest merchants and innovators from the food and beverage industry. Among those we spotted were Chef Sau Del Rosario, Chef Chelle Gonzales, Chef Kalen Chan, and more.
The host for the evening was none other than Manila Food and Wine Festival founder and organizer Spanky Enriquez who envisioned this annual event to promote food tourism in the country.
Our Awesome Planet founder Anton Diaz gave an opening speech to welcome all the guests to the Manila Food and Wine Festival which aims to establish Manila and The Philippines as the newest culinary capital in Asia. Their goal is to showcase the best of the Philippines' food and wine, hotels and restaurants, chefs and restaurateurs, and fuel the fire of innovation to elevate our Filipino food culture to the world. From July 14 to July 27, food lovers and wine enthusiasts will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a gastronomic journey that showcases the country's vibrant food culture.
DOT OIC-Undersecretary for Tourism Development Verna Buensuceso said that the Manila Food and Wine Festival also aligns with the Department of Tourism's thrust to equalize opportunities across various areas of the country. She said that this project will really boost interest in food and gastronomy tourism. A plethora of exciting activities await festival-goers, including the festival bazaar at the Shangri-La Plaza Grand Atrium which ran last weekend, together with a series of chef collaborations in the best restaurants in Antipolo, Tagaytay, and Manila, a Makati pub crawl, a food stamping program, and the gala dinner finale.
One of these special events is the Gen Tsi, part of the Elements of Flavor series at Discovery Primea. Executive Chef Luis Chikiamco's passion for modern Asian fare stems from his extensive culinary experience from around the world. Together with Chef Sharwin Tee, who is known for his twists on Chinese-Filipino dishes, and Croissant Lady Donatella Chua, who creates playful pastry creations, they crafted a menu inspired by local dining scene favorites to highlight reminiscent flavors influenced by the Tsinoy culture. To elevate this gastronomic evening, Liquido Maestro Kalel Demetrio, an acclaimed mixologist of innovative concoctions, curated a selection of specialty cocktails to pair with the dishes. You can learn more about this exciting dinner happening on July 20, 2023 offered at P4,000++ per person at bit.ly/GenTsiAtFlame. You can also book your seats by calling 7955-8888.
The two week festival ends with a bang at the Manila Iconic at Admiral Hotel Manila - MGallery. The Manila Food and Wine Festival presents an exceptional dinner event with great food, wine, and entertainment at The Admiral Club, Admiral Hotel’s unique rooftop dining destination. Chef Sau Del Rosario, with special guest Chef Tatung Sarthou, will be preparing an indulgent 8-course Filipino menu, honoring the culinary icons of the country: Engracia “Aling Asiang” Reyes, Nora Daza, and Larry J. Cruz. The dishes will be highlighted by the dessert creations of Admiral Hotel Manila's own Executive Pastry Chef, Christian Monera. Manila Iconic will be held on July 27, 2023. You can book your seats now at P7,000 nett.
The grand launch of the Manila Food and Wine Festival continued with guests sampling the many food and beverage options on display at the Westin Manila Grand Ballroom.
Destileria Limtuaco brought out its cocktail menu that included their Manille Basil Smash, a combination of Empire London Dry Gin, Manille Liqueur de Calamansi, lemon juice, and basil syrup. Another popular cocktail was the Mango Rind Punch using Old Captain Rum and Paradise Mango Rum liqueur.
Luisita Rum also offered their specialty Luisita Oro straight, on the rocks, or as a unique cocktail that included coconut juice and nata de coco.
Other wines and beers were also available for guests to sample including Pilsner Urquell, Caymus Vineyard wines, and more.
The mooncake season is fast approaching so The Hungry Chef, who makes one of the country's best home-based mooncakes, gave samples for guests to enjoy.
The Westin Manila also brought out its special dishes and everyone lined up to try these creations. The Banana Couture is a unique appetizer that deceptively looks like an ordinary banana but is actually not! It's a banana pudding with a coconut and white chocolate glaze shell that you have to see to believe.
We were also shown The Art of Kinilaw which uses sustainable tuna, coconut and cane vinegar glaze, cilantro aioli, and chili pearls. This is a more flavorful and colorful version of the kinilaw we know.
Next is the Cavingero, a crispy lechon belly tacos with watermelon rind atchara and roasted garlic sauce. These bite-sized canapes really made us hungry for more.
The main courses were also impressive. The Chicken Tinola Paella Overload is a delightful deconstructed rendition of the classic Filipino favorite with crispy chicken skin and chili garlic crumbs on top of paella rice. This is a complete meal on its own!
The highlight of the night was the carving station featuring Kurobuta Lechon and other meaty dishes from Esguerra Kurobuta. Aside from the very crispy lechon skin and tender lechon meat using Bershire black pigs, they also had roast pork, roast chicken, and delicious baby back ribs.
For desserts, Karabella Dairy and Destileria Limtuaco had a collaboration that showcased their spiked gelatos like the Intramuros Liqueur de Cacao Gelato, Manille Liqueur de Calamnsi Gelato, and the Paradise Mango Rum Liqueur Gelato.
Another surprising item that evening was the Pork Sisig Donut Bites from Westin Manila. These look like ordinary glazed donuts on the outside but are actually filled with savory sisig on the inside. It also comes with calamansi and chicharon crumble, so I'm not really sure if this counts as a dessert or an appetizer.
Macarons Macarons offered its premium French macaron variants like the Queso de Bola Macarons, Macapuno Macarons, Milo French Macarons, and even Chili Macarons.
There's always room for more ice cream so the Philippine Fruit Dessert Trio from Sebastian's Ice Cream was also a wonderful treat. The first item is a Lanzones Sorbet made with duco lanzones and garnished with fresh mint. At the back is the Dalandan Ice Cream made with fresh dalandan and garnished with candied dalandan peel. Lastly, the one in the middle is the Avocado Tres Leches using avocado ice cream made with avocado layered on tres leches cake soaked in condensed evaporated milk. Congratulations to the entire team of the Manila Food and Wine Festival for a successful launch. Visit their Facebook page to know more about the other exciting events in store for the next two weeks.

A War Paint - Broadway - April 29, 2017 (Matinee) (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Patti LuPone (Helena Rubinstein), Christine Ebersole (Elizabeth Arden), John Dossett (Tommy Lewis), Douglas Sills (Harry Fleming) NOTES: The master gets caught during Face to Face. You can hear someone say “TURN IT OFF”. Blackout during that part. Wasted - Southwark Playhouse - 2018 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Matthew Jacobs Morgan (Branwell Brontë), Molly Lynch (Anne Brontë), Natasha Barnes (Charlotte Brontë), Siobhan Athwal (Emily Brontë) We Are The Tigers - Off-Broadway - March, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Lauren Zakrin (Riley Williams), Wonu Ogunfowora (Cairo), Jenny Rose Baker (Kate Dalton), MiMi Scardulla (Reese), Kaitlyn Frank (Annleigh), Cathy Ang (Mattie Wheeler), Celeste Rose (Chess), Zoe Jensen (Farrah), Sydney Parra (Eva Sanchez), Louis Griffin (Clark) NOTES: Starts at the beginning of "I Just Wanna" and missing part of "Mattie's Lament." The theater was really full tonight so there are a good number of heads in this video, but they are worked around to the best of my ability. This is a super small theater (less than 160 seats) and at times the cast members were definitely singing to the camera and honestly giving their best performances because of it. All of the things on the upper level (the bathroom, the pathway, and the kitchen) are captured perfectly, and the zooms on the lower level (the living room and bench) look good as well. Obviously because this is a murder mystery kind of show the lighting can get a little bit dark, but my camera handles low lighting incredibly well. This is honestly the best video you could expect from this venue We Will Rock You - Germany (Cologne) - August, 2005 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alex Melcher (Galileo), Vera Bolten (Scaramouche), Brigitte Oelke (Killer Queen), Martin Berger (Khashoggi), Michaela Kovarikova (Meat/Oz), DMJ (Brit/J.B.), James Sbano (Pop/Buddy/Bap), Harald Tauber (Teacher), Willemijn Verkaik NOTES: Multicam proshot We Will Rock You - Utrecht (The Netherlands) - October, 2010 FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: John Vooijs (Galileo), Marjolein Teepen (Scaramouche), Pia Douwes (Killer Queen), Paul Donkers (Khashoggi), Floortje Smit (Meat/Oz), Ruud van Overdijk (Brit/J.B.), Rutger le Poole (Pop/Buddy/Bap) NOTES: Good capture. NEOCLASICO

Colección Widener, National Gallery of Art.

In Filipino households, doing the laundry is traditionally seen as a woman’s sole responsibility. Thanks to the shift in people’s mindsets, aided by Ariel’s progressive #JuanWash campaign, that backwards thinking will soon be a thing of the past.
Recognizing that chores can be done by anyone, Ariel rolled out the #JuanWash campaign which is targeted towards men. Its goal is straightforward and goes right into the heart of the matter – to get men to do their share of laundry duties, one wash at a time. For Ariel men, this goes beyond simply doing the laundry, as it also shows their support to their wives, and moulds their children into understanding the equal role of men and women in doing the household chores.
As the first detergent to invite men to do their part of the housework, Ariel assembled several celebrity #JuanWash ambassadors. Among them is professional basketball player JC Intal, supported by his wife Bianca Gonzalez-Intal, as well as actor John Prats, supported by his wife Isabel Oli-Prats.
“The new Ariel Man is more confident and more responsible when it comes to raising his family, explains JC Intal. More and more Juan Washers all over the country are rising up to do their share of the laundry duties, and it’s a call to arms that expresses what it means to be the modern man of the house. “Ang Ariel Man ay makabago at progresibo. Ang totoong macho ay tumutulong sa mga gawaing bahay to serve as good male role models for the kids,” adds John Prats.
Local personalities Kean Cipriano, James Deakin, Ali Khatibi, Marco Alcaraz, Sam Ajdani, and Anton Del Rosario are also active #JuanWash supporters. These Juan Washers use Ariel Power Gel which makes superior cleaning effortless so they can easily help out at home.
Launched online last September 1, 2017, the #JuanWash campaign not only celebrated those men who have done their part of laundry duties, but also dedicated Fridays as #JuanWash days. Considering that most Filipino households do their laundry twice a week, getting men to do the laundry once a week means doing their equal share of the load. By getting men to do the laundry at least once a week, Ariel hopes to transform them into laundry experts with the help from Ariel Power Gel that’s especially formulated for better stain removal with just one wash.
In partnership with Eat Bulaga, Ariel also scoured through many different barangays in Metro Manila to find Juan Washers every Friday. This put the spotlight on individual Juan Washers, and showcased how valuable their role is in further pushing gender equality in the family and in the community. In so doing, Ariel Men all over the Philippines were able to collect 10,000 laundry hours in just one month, which represents the number of hours freed up for the women in their lives.
To celebrate this feat, Ariel handed over the 10,000 laundry hours to the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), represented by their Chief of Corporate Affairs and Information Resource Management Division, Ms. Honey Castro, as a symbolic gift to women, while emphasizing Ariel’s support for gender equality in the household. This aims to inspire and encourage more men to do their share of the load.
“The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), the lead agency that champions gender equality and women’s empowerment, welcomes this initiative of Ariel Philippines in breaking the gender stereotype that housework is only women’s work,” shares PCW Executive Director Emmeline L. Verzosa. She adds, “We are glad that the private sector and advertising agencies have now joined the campaign in promoting the value of shared household and parenting responsibilities among female and male family members. Through such male role models, companies are able to educate the public about more positive masculinities. Gender equality should begin at home.”
Ariel’s #JuanWash campaign comes as a crucial time for Filipino families, whose lifestyles continue to evolve, especially with the rise in dual-income homes and an increasingly progressive cultural landscape that puts equal value in the time of women and men. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), formerly known as the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), Filipino men are getting more involved in household work, with men allotting an average of 5 hours working on chores in the year 2000 compared to the average of 1.87 hours in 1979. The trend is expected to continue to increase as traditional gender roles shift.
“More than providing superior clean and better stain removal with our innovative liquid detergent, Ariel is a brand that prides itself in being a part of the progressive Filipino home. With Ariel #JuanWash, we want to shed light on the importance of gender equality in and out of home, as we all work together towards a more progressive country and a more equal world”, shares Louie Morante, Regional Brand Communications for P&G ASEAN Fabric and Home Care.
The #JuanWash campaign supports P&G’s #WeSeeEqual global advocacy, and forms part of Ariel Philippines’ #AhonPinay movement which continues to push the boundaries on gender equality and women empowerment. To date, Ariel has an ongoing partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to provide women with training in commonly male-dominated fields. These trainings are envisioned to give these women more equal job opportunities in these fields.
A lot is in store for Ariel’s #JuanWash initiative, and we hope you can also take part in spreading the word for this nationwide movement. Go ahead and be a part of the change by contributing to your share of the household chores with #JuanWash – one wash at a time.
In gratitude to the modern Juans, Ariel is also offering a unique promotion for men who would be availing of select services from various Metropole Laundromat branches. Every time men commit to the cause in this way, they’ll earn points for freebies granted by Ariel and Metropole as a gift to the efforts shared in supporting #JuanWash Fridays.
