Day 23: SPACE Pirates!
[30 Day Self Ship Challenge]
Watching his Captain fly through space was one of the things Antok loved most in life. There was just something about the expression that came over Kolivan's face when he was flying, like that of a sailor at sea with the wind in their hair. Sure, there was no wind or salt spray here in space, but Kolivan's face portrayed that same expression of freedom.
Freedom. It was Kolivan who had given Antok his freedom once, who continued to give others the chance at it. Many didn't make the cut, too intimidated by Kolivan's harsh orders and demanding presence, but Antok was sure that if they could watch him fly, they would join in a heartbeat.
It had made Antok stay, anyways.
"Antok," Kolivan called out, sharp but friendly, "We're nearing the swap moon; make sure everyone is prepared."
"Aye-aye, Captain." With those words, Antok left Kolivan's side to bark orders at the crew. Being the first-mate had privileges, and one of those happened to be that people did whatever he said. Which worked out well, considering Antok had very little patience for stupidity.
As always, the ship landed as smoothly as water rolling onto sand. A third of the crew followed their captain onto the surface, while the others stayed behind to guard their ship. Only a handful of other ships had made port, which Antok was thankful for; Kolivan was known to break up fights if he deemed them unnecessary and there was always a higher chance of said fights breaking out when there were more pirates around.
Half way through their trading excursion, a scream rang out through the small crowd and Antok let out a sigh. Sure enough, Kolivan was heading in that direction, his curiosity piqued.
"Let GO of me!" A female hissed at a rather large alien who was holding her by the wrists hard enough to bruise.
"You stole from me, filthy child," The alien, who looked to be a Quagro, growled, "You will pay with your head!"
Antok had to pick up his pace to keep up with Kolivan, who was looking rather pissed off. He could not blame his captain, though; such violence against a cub was unwarranted. As they finally reached the commotion, Antok heard the female growl out, "I stole nothing! Now let me go!"
There are gasps and cheers alike from the crowd of black market salespeople and pirates as the Quagro raises his sharp claws, but Antok merely stands back and smiles to himself. Sure enough, just as the claws are slicing downwards through the air, Kolivan's hand catches it and painfully twists. Seeing her chance, the female attempts to dash into the crowd, but Antok easily picked her up with one arm to swing her over his shoulder. She lets out and indignant, "Hey!" but Antok ignores her in favour of watching Kolivan bring the Quagro to his knees.
"What did this child steal from you?" Kolivan demanded. With a whimper, the Quagro pointedly looked at the stand of sliced meats beside him.
"A whole draggal hock," the alien gulped slightly, "It was just there, and now-"
Ignoring him, Kolivan turns to Antok, who shakes his head in confirmation; there is nothing on her but ragged clothing.
"You have the wrong thief," Kolivan states before finally releasing the other, "Be more accurate in your assessments before threatening death upon a cub's head."
The Quagro merely nods, eying the blade on Kolivan's belt warily and not moving until both Kolivan and Antok have turned and walked away. The female is silent and still until they reach the port once more and Antok sets her down.
"Thank you for helping me," She says honestly, looking into Kolivan's eyes without shrinking away, "but I'm not a child."
That catches both Galra by surprise; the girl barely stands the height of their waists, after all.
"Then perhaps I should have left you to your own battle." Humming, Kolivan studies the girl. Antok does not like the look on his captain's face, because he knows what it means. Sure enough, after a moment, Kolivan leans over to touch the female's hair and asks, "Where exactly are you from, cub?"
"Not here," she mutters, "And I'm not a cub."
"She is not galra," Antok tries speaking to Kolivan's pride, "She cannot board with us."
"Galra is only the requirement of becoming a Blade," Kolivan corrects him, "We may have visitors on board. Perhaps a young woman in need of a ride home?"
As soon as the female's eyes light up at the suggestion, Antok knows he's lost. With a growling sigh, he watches his beloved captain engage in light conversation with the stranger until he can stand it no longer.
Once they board, Antok returns to his quarters alone and fumes over his bad luck and new competition.

To Sail, To Break, To Earn - Chapter Two
Remember when I said these subsequent chapters would be short? This chapter is 4500 words.
And now, the Plance interaction begins. @sp4c3-0ddity tag you’re it.
Prologue
Chapter One
~~~~~
A mermaid. They actually had a mermaid with precious little time to spare. The condition to break the curse could be met. Haggar wouldn’t be happy to give up her potential puppets so easily, so perhaps they’d have to fight her once more, but they would at least be free of the curse.
Lance should be happy.
He feels miserable instead, nearly sick to his stomach.
It’s been hours and her face still haunts him. He recognizes her eyes, a clear echo of his younger self, although her fear and heartache were far more justified than his had ever been. Unthinkable what-ifs worm into his mind, of his parents refusing to submit to the hostage demands. Would the crew have killed him at a time when they hadn’t known him as well?
Lance dismisses the traitorous thoughts. The Blade of Marmora pirates are not - and never were - cold-blooded killers; he’s seen that firsthand throughout the years.
But no matter their moral code, having a mermaid in the brig put them all on a figurative sandbar.
“There is no discussion,” Kolivan says to the circle of assembled crew. “Waiting until the last moment is too cruel. The heart must be taken now.”
Frenzied debate breaks out among the veteran members. While most agree it must be done, having the mermaid physically aboard gives many second thoughts, Lance included.
He sighs and goes about his appointed task of checking the mermaid’s possessions, something to help keep busy while the crew debates. He shifts around for a more stable seat on the rigging that he and Keith watch from.
“It’s not fair,” Lance says. He sifts through the bag’s contents with one hand, feeling mostly smooth rocks and the ridges of seashells.
“Most things in life aren’t,” Keith replies evenly.
“There has to be something else we can do,” Lance stresses, turning to his friend. “Haggar said we had to earn the heart of a mermaid. Cutting out her heart and taking it doesn’t sound like earning to me.”
Keith shrugs. “She did surrender of her own free will. I’d call that earning.”
Lance deflates in exasperation and peers into the satchel. “We were kidnapping her dad.”
“It kind of counts?” Keith says. “Look, I don’t really want her dead either, Lance, but if we don’t break this curse not only do we have a fate worse than death, but Zarkon gets an immortal crew that follows his commands to the letter. None of us want that for ourselves or for the world. If there was another way we’d all jump on it.”
Lance’s fingertips brush a couple strange objects. He pulls out a handheld pipe and a pair of spectacles minus their lenses and wonders use would a mermaid have for these.
Lance leans back and throws his hands up, landing in a cluster of rope. “This sucks. I thought a pirate’s life was supposed to be carefree and simple. We’re supposed to be raiding ships, wooing the ladies, and just generally having a good time.”
“Maybe some of us, not you,” Keith ribs with a smirk on his face. “You’re the least pirate out of all of us.”
A sting pierces his heart, but he continues smiling despite it. He knows Keith doesn’t mean to hurt him, not like this, but by the Ancients Lance thought he was past this.
“What?” he jokes back. “You’ve see my charms firsthand. The ladies we rescue love me.”
A grey, long-haired cat poofs into existence on top of Lance’s currently horizontal stomach. He isn’t surprised by Kosmo’s appearance but gasps and shoots back to a sitting position when the teleporting cat uses his belly as a launching pad. He takes the mermaid’s frames and poofs away.
“Can you please control your cat?” he tells Keith in annoyance and points at the bag in his lap. “I’m going to have to give this back eventually.”
Keith rolls his eyes. “Kosmo has more charm than you,” he jabs with a teasing glint, but quickly frowns when his eyes flicker to the deck of the ship. “If you want to give the bag back to her, you’d better do something now. Otherwise you may not get a chance.”
Kolivan has broken off from the group with Krolia and Antok, making their way down towards the brig. Before Lance can even think about what he’s doing, he climbs down and rushes to stand in their way.
“There’s got to be another way,” he pleads.
“This isn’t up for debate, Lance,” Krolia says. She steps forward. “Move aside.”
Lance blocks her path “Doesn’t this feel wrong to you? We haven’t earned anything. We’re going to kill her for nothing.”
“And you have an alternative?” Kolivan asks. “Lance, you cannot put yourself in her position. It isn’t the same.”
Lance knows it’s a rhetorical question, but he can’t not say anything. “I’m cursed just the same as everyone else,” he blurts. “Haggar looked into my head for this part, so I should have some say in this,”--he crosses his arms defiantly--“and I say we keep looking for another way.”
There, that ought to show them.
“If you want a say in this then you must be prepared to cut her heart out yourself,” Kolivan responds. “Is that something you are willing to do?”
Lance gapes like a fish, unprepared for the ultimatum. He’s killed before, but never an unarmed civilian - let alone a mermaid! The phrase ‘shooting fish in a barrel’ becomes uncomfortably real.
Phrase. Haggar never said they needed to literally take a mermaid’s heart. She’d used the word ‘earn’.
“I won’t have to,” Lance says. He beams at the revelation. “Maybe all she has to do is say ‘I love you’ and that’ll be it. I - I’ll pull out all the stops, Candlelit dinners, flowers somehow, the best compliments!”
Krolia raises an eyebrow and side-eyes Kolivan, awaiting his reaction. Antok says nothing, but his aura judges Lance’s plan.
“We’ve discussed the curse being metaphorical before,” Kolivan states. “It is unlikely such a superficial act will work. Are you willing to put both of your hearts on the line to gain a true bond? If you fail, she will end up suffering tenfold before death, and you will live with it.”
“It's worth trying,” Lance says quickly. “I know if I were given a choice, I’d try anything.”
He bites his lip; he hadn’t meant for that to be so direct.
Kolivan is silent for a long moment, hopefully considering Lance’s words.
“This is our last chance,” he says evenly. “You have until the day before the century mark. If the curse has not broken, then you will cut out her heart.”
Lance barely registers the last part. He salutes, grinning from ear to ear. “Thank you, Captain!” The mermaid will be safe for the time being. “I’ll start right away!”
“Do not tell her about the curse,” Kolivan says, pulling him up short. “It may be best to let her live in ignorance for a while longer. Do you understand?”
He frowns under Kolivan’s intense stare. “What am I supposed to say when she asks?”
“You’re a pirate, Lance,” Krolia offers with a sigh. “You don’t have to say anything.”
But he isn’t. Not really. His situation makes no difference to the mermaid though, so pirate he’ll be.
“All right,” Lance concedes. “I won’t tell her about the curse.”
Kolivan nods in approval. “Have Keith help you with the mermaid’s needs. That will be your principal duty from now on. I’ll take someone off weapons maintenance to help with food preparation.”
Lance’s mouth twitches into a grin. He’ll get to flirt on duty and order Keith around? Today is shaping up to be a good day.
~~~~~
The enthusiasm fades as he descends the stairs to the brig, where they keep the mermaid mostly out of principle. She can’t survive long out of the water-filled barrel, so putting her behind bars seems unnecessary.
As much as Lance wants to help her, he has no idea where to start. What does he even say?
It’s been so long since his own kidnapping. He tries to remember who said what to him, or how long he wanted to be alone, but he only has fleeting memories of Krolia placing a sword in his hands and late-night chats with Keith while trying to fall asleep.
He remembers being busy, but the mermaid won’t have the luxury of distraction.
Maybe that’s what he can give her.
Lance opens the barred door, the irons thick and flat. It creaks, unused and unoiled in decades (he’ll fix it later), and he winces. She had to know he was here now. “Hey,” he says, raising his voice just above normal. “You still in there?”
He wants to slap himself for his stupid question. “O-obviously you’re still there. What I mean, is everything okay?” he wonders as he draws closer. Water trickles over the side of the barrel, displaced by the creature - person - inside. “Comfortable? I know it’s not the most spacious place. Maybe I can get you something to make it a bit better?”
No answer.
He takes a deep breath in and out, upper body rolling in sync. Adjusting the one good strap of the mermaids backpack around his shoulder, he steps forward and cautiously peers into the water.
It’s darker here in the hold, so it’s hard to make out the figure at the bottom at first.
His nose finds her first. Despite being part fish, why did mermaids have to smell like them too? The stories never prepared him for this.
When his eyes adjust, he can see that hers are closed. Her tail, twice as long as the rest of her body, twitches like Kosmo’s does when he’s in the midst of a dream.
She didn’t hear a word he said.
Lance releases the breath he was holding. At least her nap spares him embarrassment.
He probably should leave her be; that’s what he thinks he would want but… she’s mesmerizing. Lance still remembers the twelve-year-old inside of him fascinated with mermaids and wanting so badly to meet one, how amazing it is that a humanoid could live underwater naturally. A memory from another lifetime resurfaces, of him pretending to be a mermaid on the beach with his siblings, of him ducking in and out of the water to scare his sisters and his father joking that perhaps he was born to be a fish after all.
And now because of the curse, he’s confined to the water he loves so much.
She won’t notice if he stays for just a bit longer. He wants to commit what she looks like to memory. He can try making nice with her another time.
Seaweed drapes her torso, concealing everything it needs to . Growing up on a ship with a mixed crew, there’s little he’s a stranger to, but he’s relieved merfolk have similar modesty standards to humans. He doesn’t want to be caught gawking for more than one reason.
Long auburn hair and a pale upper half is where any physical commonality ends. Dark green scales - nearly black submerged in water - dot her arms and back and thicken at her wrists. Lance follows the ribbing along the top of her tail, which curls around the edges of the barrel with the fins tickling her face. His heart thumps in regret when her thinly webbed fingers clutch above the fins, as if seeking comfort from something familiar.
He knows with certainty that’s what she’s doing.
Only the threat of the curse on him and the crew keeps him from just letting her free right this minute.
“I’m so sorry,” he whispers. He dares to grip the edge of the barrel and dip his fingers in the water. “I hope you can forgive us one day.”
The mermaid's eyes flash open. A surprised gasp barely escapes him before angry red eyes find him.
She launches herself up.
Lance steps back, heart pounding. He isn’t fast enough, and sharp needle-like teeth sink into his forearm.
He screams from the pain, falling to the floor and sliding away, clutching his arm to stop the bleeding.
“Hey, that hurt!” he exclaims indignantly once he realizes he’s not going to die from the wound. He’s had worse, and being immortal has some perks.
He meets her guarded hazel eyes, the hint of fear unmistakable. Her scaled fingers grip the edge of the barrel, but her mouth is still underwater.
“Good!” she snaps, but her voice cracks despite her indignation. “It’s supposed it!”
A beam of sunlight from a barred vent in the ceiling hits her thickly scaled cheeks, making her face look unworldly thin and scales shine yellowish-green. It’s gorgeous, the way she can seem so dark and mysterious underwater and bright and youthful above.
She must be stunning in the sunshine…
(He admonishes himself for hating the overcast skies from when they took her aboard.)
Her thinly webbed earlobes twitch, their rectangular shape odd but the action obviously annoyed.
His jaw snaps shut when he realizes he’s gaping.
“It’s bad enough you’re keeping me here, but are you all planning on watching me while I sleep? It’s creepy. Can’t you just leave me alone?” She sinks lower into the water and he can no longer see her flat, scaly nose.
The dark blue puffs around her eyes aren’t scaled, but they don’t seem to fit with the rest of her face. Did mermaids cry water underwater?
Oh. Of course she’s been upset.
“No!” he retorts. “I just came to see if I can get you anything. It gets lonely down here.”
She hisses, “I don’t need company from any human!” She ducks down with a splash, hiding from view.
The blood drains from his face as his brain scrambles for context. He lifts his bloodied hand from his wound and sees that he’ll need to see Doctor Ulaz for disinfectant. He knows stories of legendary beings from both land and sea, one of his favorite pastimes. What if…
“I’m not going to turn into a mermaid, am I?” he frets. But it would be preferable to the curse he already lived under, and he wouldn’t need pants anymore. Less laundry!
She doesn’t respond.
Lance considers leaving, frustrated with his lack of success, but he remembers why he’s there. Her life is on the line. He has to at least make an effort to be friends.
And the child inside wants to know more about her.
He stands and clears his throat, confidence rising in the simple action. “We got off on the wrong foot, or tail for you I guess. I’m sorry for staring at you. I won’t do it again. My name’s Lance.”
He waits for her to reply with her name. After an uncomfortably long silence, he continues, “Look, I know you have no reason to trust any of us, but two months is a long time to not talk to anyone.”
Her eyes break the surface once more, this time looking uncertain and vulnerable. “How long is two months?” she asks.
“About sixty days,” he says patiently. “A sunrise and sunset make a day.”
“Oh, sixty quintants.” She gulps, diverting her eyes. “What happens to me after that?”
Lance isn’t sure how to answer without revealing her role in lifting the curse. She deserves to know, he knows she does, but he doesn’t want to risk losing a tentative thread of friendship this early when it could save her life.
But he pauses too long, and she thankfully continues into a nervous ramble.
“Am I going to one of those… menageries? A—a lot of the sea creatures have relatives who end up in one. I’ve heard they aren’t too bad, once you get used to land walkers watching you all the time. As long as there’s room to swim and the water has good circulation.”
Her hands shake. Lance isn’t sure what comes over him, but compassion for both her true predicament and guessed one outweighs the fear of being bitten again.
“I won’t have to forage anymore,” she adds. “And there will be plenty of others to talk to. Maybe we’ll know the same folk.” She perks up. “Maybe they’ll know my family! I’ll never see them again but maybe the seals can take mes — “
On a chance, Lance takes her hands in his. They are cool and smooth to the touch, and he can’t help running a thumb over the scales. She stops trembling but does not pull away.
“I still want to see the human world. Maybe whoever is in charge will have some interesting things for me to see.”
“Is that why you carry this bag of junk?”
Her eyes widen when he shows that he has it with him, and she rises to her chest out of the water, ripping her hand away. “That’s mine! Give it back!”
Lance holds the satchel up and away from her. This is his chance to find out her interests fast. “You’re really interested in this stuff?”
“Not anymore thanks to you!” she yells, swiping for it and missing.
His heart freezes in horror as she leans over for it with her sharp claws fully extended, her abdomen a fulcrum and the barrel on the verge of tipping over.
Lance drops the bag and steadies the barrel, preventing more water from spilling to the floor.
But the mermaid strains for the bag and flops out, her tail slapping him squarely in the face.
“Ow!” he whines, clutching his sore nose. He intends to say more but reconsiders when she clutches the bag to her chest as if it was a lifeline.
Half the water is spilled thanks to the incident. Lance needs to fill it again, but more importantly he needs to get her back in.
“We’re not all bad, you know,” he says weakly. He senses he repeats words someone once told him, and it makes him ill delivering the message himself and meaning it.
“Then why did you kidnap me? Why did you take my things?” she demands without loosening her grip on the bag. “We did nothing to earn this.”
Lance winces at her choice of words, guilt eating him from the inside. “I had to make sure there was nothing dangerous to us in there,” he says, dodging the first question. “I was going to give it back to you.”
Her eyes grow wide in surprise and possible embarrassment. “You went through my treasures?!”
“I wouldn’t call them treasures,” Lance admits. “That pipe is useless underwater, and it’s just rocks and seashells. You can find those anywhere. Your necklace looks like a real gem though. That might be worth something.”
The mermaid encases the green stone centerpiece with one hand - Lance is positive it’s an emerald - and glares. “What kind of humans are you?”
“This is a pirate ship and most of us aren’t even human,” Lance says. “I’m the only one, actually. Everyone else is Galra. Well, except Keith, but he’s only half-Galra so he looks human. You… can’t tell the difference?”
Her mouth flaps open. “I thought humans were just that biologically diverse.”
Oh Ancients, they’ve captured a scientist.
She sighs in resignation. “I wish I could make note of all this. Are humans and Galra the only — “ She wheezes, choking on the air.
Time was up for her drying gills.
Lance scoops her up, muscles conditioned after decades at sea. He dips her head first into the water, making sure her gills are functioning and at rest before letting her tail slide in.
“Are you okay?” he asks, leaning over to look into the barrel.
The mermaid curls up on the bottom like when he first arrived, but her eyes are closed in relief rather than sleep.
“I’m fine,” she says. “I hate this water. It’s so stale.”
Despite her complaint (or rather because of it), her gills open wide to take in water for several seconds, before she sits upright, the waterline only up to her shoulders.
“You said I had a pipe. What’s a pipe?”
“The pipe?! You almost died and you’re worried about your knickknacks?” he says, incredulous. “I need to get you more water. I’ll change it every couple of hours from now on.” He straightens to leave to do just that.
“Wait,” she says, grabbing his arm. He turns to see her desperate look. “Don’t leave. The human things were gifts from my family. I’ve wanted to know what they really are since forever. I can deal with a little stale water until then.”
Lance sees the break he’s been looking for and somehow stumbled upon. He melts at her touch, relaxing even though he shouldn’t with her obvious discomfort.
He hopes her request doesn’t end up being her last one.
“It’s the five tubes of metal tied together,” he says.
The mermaid digs through her bag with vigor. She finds the correct object, but her face scrunches in confusion. “It’s not here!” she says, voice rising with increasing panic. “Matt’s wires are missing!” She glares at him. “What did you do with them?”
“I didn’t take anything!” he defends. “I put everything back in the bag except — “
Except for the glasses that Kosmo snatched, he realizes with dread. Probably the wires she’s talking about.
Lance is used to Keith’s cat, so he isn’t surprised when he teleports in at the exact moment he’s needed with the frames in his mouth, walking delicately along the rim of the barrel.
Lance is used to cursed cats.
The mermaid is not. She shrieks, dropping the bag and stiffening, backing up as far as she can.
“Go bother Keith,” Lance grumbles as he takes the frames and shoos the cat off with a wave. Kosmo jumps down without a sound and poofs off to his next haunt.
“What was that?” she squeaks.
“Keith’s magical cat,” Lance says, rolling his eyes. “Kosmo catches all the rats that stow away. He’s harmless and been here longer than me. He just takes a bit to get used to. We had all kinds of fun with him when we were kids. It was almost like having a dog.”
The mermaid stares blankly at him. “What’s a cat?”
Lance isn’t often caught speeches, but how does one explain a cat? “One of those?”
“Obviously,” she says, rolling her eyes. “What is its species name? It’s a land animal so perhaps — “
“I’ll tell you if you tell me your name,” Lance interrupts. “I mean, I won’t force you, but I really don’t want to keep calling you ‘mermaid’ the whole time.” To increase the incentive, he holds the frames out to her.
She takes it, as if it was a precious glass figurine. “Thank you,” she murmurs, and ducks back underwater.
When she emerges again, she’s wearing the frames.
Behind her head.
“You can call me Pidge,” she finally says.
Lance grins, heart filling with joy. This crazy plan might actually work. No one will have to die. He just has to get her to say those words.
“Well, Pidge,” he says, enjoying how easily her name rolls off the tongue, “your first human lesson is how to properly wear glasses.” He leans over and plucks them off her head, before gently resting them in front of her eyes.
Not having a nose causes complications and they fall down her face. She scowls. “What’s the point in that?”
Lance laughs. “Humans use them to see better. Normally they have glass in them, so we call them glasses. Doctor Ulaz has a working pair. I guess it doesn’t work for mermaids.”
Pidge stares down cross-eyed before placing the glasses back the way she had them, more like a hat. “I like it better this way. What’s a cat? And what’s a dog? And the differences between Galra and human - and what do my pipes do?” she asks, holding up the device. “I want to know everything.”
“Okay okay, one thing at a time!” Lance stresses. “Mammals. That’s the term you’re looking for. That’s what humans and Galra are too.”
“Fascinating,” Pidge breathes in wonder. “I knew there had to be more of them on land like seals. Maybe I’ll get to see some more when I”--her smile falters for just a blink of an eye,--“get to the menagerie.”
Lance refuses to go down that road of conversation right now.
“Yeah, sure. Those pipes are pretty cool though. You can play a song with them.”
Pidge lights up. “I knew it was a musical instrument! I knew it and no one believed me!” She thrusts it into his face, and he has to lean back to avoid getting hit. “Can you play it? I want to know what it sounds like. I want to know how it works!”
Lance examines it once it’s in his hands. He hasn’t played one of these since Antok’s was lost to the sea in an incident that was absolutely not his fault. He smirks. It was easy enough then, it should be no problem now. Plus, it’s another opportunity to impress Pidge.
“I should be able to play a few notes,” he brags.
Pidge doesn’t seem to mind the obvious posturing; she rests her elbows and chin on the rim of the barrel, eagerly awaiting his performance.
So he plays, blowing softly into each tube. The melody is terrible and he can’t remember a single song, but it seems to be pitched well even after years underwater.
Pidge is enraptured. A smile remains on her face and her ears wiggle with delight.
It’s incredibly cute and endearing.
He finishes and she claps excitedly for him. “That was amazing! It’s so different from dolphin and whale calls!”
His heart flutters from the praise. He didn’t grow up in the absence of it, but he could never see past the underlying obligation behind the words. Pidge doesn’t know his story, and now that they seem to be getting along, there was no need to tell her.
He’s about to thank her when the cellar door slams open.
“Lance!” Keith yells, nearly out of breath. “We found the Vrepit Sa. It’s alone. We’ll be on her in an hour!”
The pride of Zarkon’s fleet, alone. Ripe for picking off and causing a crippling blow to the pirate king himself.
They’ll never get another chance to weaken Zarkon with only two months before the curse expires. They have to do whatever they can to take him down before they’re unable to resist his commands.
“I’ll be right there!” he calls back.
Keith acknowledges him with a nod and runs off to prepare his own post, Kosmo at his heels.
“What’s going on?” Pidge asks. She looks around wildly, pausing to watch a few crewmembers run across the vent above her. “What are you doing?”
Lance smirks, energy building and escaping through twitching fingers. “What pirates do best: raid ships.

Hi! Would you write teenage Keith getting injured and Shiro taking care of him while he's in pain? Thank you so much! Keep up with the great writing!
Hello! Thank you to you and every fan of this AU who remains patient. As some of you may have seen my earlier post, I am in my last semester of college and will be doing my senior thesis this semester. Which means an extremely busy semester. Despite this, I love this AU and will continue to answer prompts and write but it may take time to publish asks! Thanks for all your patience and this was fun to write. I wrote Shiro but I also added in the whole big family too because Keith is so loved. Thank you so much nonny and I hope you enjoy!
x.V.x
Shiro had once thought he was prepared for anything. Back when he was first joining the military, fresh out of high school, Shiro was prepared for anything. He would laugh at people who found life full of surprises, as he and his brother felt like they were prepared. After all, Shiro was a member of a special operations unit where it was his duty to be prepared for the unexpected. Kuro was a well-known captain who was just as prepared as Shiro.
Shiro learned he was quite unprepared the day he was held prisoner and the months to follow. He learned the hard way when he had mourned his brother’s death for over two years, before being shocked when his brother was found alive.
Then came the biggest surprise of Shiro’s life.
Keith.
Raising Keith was full of unexpected surprises. From sicknesses such as cancer to radical haircuts, and ruining $200 worth of makeup, Keith was full of surprises. It took Shiro a while to adjust to this unexpected life and yet, every time Shiro felt he was prepared for anything to happen, something new always threw him for a loop.
“I don’t understand how this happened.” Shiro rubbed his forehead tiredly. The poor doctor in front of him, sighed in agreement, while the professor next to him shifted on their feet anxiously.
“Well, your son, unfortunately, lost focus during our sparing sessions in class which resulted in his opponent gaining the upper hand.” The gym professor replied quietly. Shiro breathed deeply through his nose, finally opening his eyes to look at the professor. Really?
“I get that,” Shiro said tightly, trying to keep calm and level-headed. “What I don’t understand is how a ninth grade gym class left my son with three broken ribs and a bruised back.”
“Well, sparring can get a bit rough,” The teacher tugged at his collar.
“I know that. I was in the military once,” Shiro deadpanned. “My point is if properly supervised a freshman gym sparring session never should have gotten to the point where my son would receive broken ribs for any reason.” The professor swallowed nervously.
“It takes a great deal of impact to break that many ribs.” The doctor finally intervened with a sigh. “I can understand the bruising and maybe a fractured rib, but to have three broken ribs would mean that Keith was being overpowered for a long time without proper supervision. I would expect an instructor such as yourself would have intervened if you saw this level of defeat occurring, correct?”
“Y-Yes ma’am.” The professor nodded quickly when Keith’s doctor glared at him.
The doctor glared at the professor for a few seconds longer before turning to Shiro. “He’s fine to be released whenever you want. He’ll be on the morphine for a few more hours. You should start some pain medication after dinner tonight and administer them when he becomes uncomfortable with the pain.”
“Will he be okay?” Shiro nervously chewed on his lip. He would rather not let the professor see how worried he was, but he couldn’t help it. Keith was his son, and Keith’s health came before anything else. Even Shiro’s own health.
“He should be fine. It’ll take a few weeks before his ribs fully heal. During that time I expect no high level of physical activity. For the first week or two, he should remain resting as often as he can. The bruises should fade in about a month. They’ll look worse before they go away.”
“Yeah, I remember bruises.” Shiro shuddered.
“As for you,” Keith’s doctor whirled on the professor, whose back straightened like a board. “Keith will not be allowed to participate in gym class any further. I will have a written document for the school, but I expect that he is allowed to pass this class, despite not being able to participate. It would be a shame should word get out of negligence towards a student.”
“Yes, ma’am. He can study or do other work during class!” The professor said quickly. Shiro couldn’t help but grin at the doctor, watching with slight amusement at the way the professor was squirming under the fierce glare of the doctor.
After a while, the professor was excused and the doctor left Shiro to attend Keith while she checked on other patients. Shiro sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair. He paused outside of Keith’s room, hearing quiet voices just beyond the door. Shiro never would get over at how surprised he constantly was with Keith. Not that any of this was Keith’s fault. Still, Shiro didn’t know how many more heart attacks his poor, frail, young body could take. He wasn’t even that old.
Opening the door, Shiro smiled softly upon seeing Keith propped up by pillows and surrounded by his friends and family.
“Dude, do you want Hunk and I to kick their butts? Because we could totally kick their butts.” Lance was demanding. Keith looked mostly unimpressed by Lance’s claim, but only Shiro could see the quirk of Keith’s lips which meant he was very happy.
“You couldn’t kick anyone’s butt if you tried, Lance.” Keith huffed painfully.
Lance gasped dramatically, opening his mouth to argue, only for Pidge to interrupt.
“You’re right Keith, as always.” They pushed their glasses up the bridge of their nose. “But Hunk totally could. He wouldn’t even need any help.”
“That sounds like an excellent plan,” Kuro interjected playfully. He wrapped an arm around a nervous Hunk and beamed at Keith. “I could even help Hunk here out. Just give me the name of this punk and his address and we can chat. Why I even bet that your uncles would love to help.”
Kolivan, Ulaz, and Antok all nodded without a moment’s hesitation. Shiro bit his lip to keep from laughing out loud because he knew that all of them were completely serious. They would destroy this punk. Keith’s lips twitched and his shoulders jerked for a split second.
“Dude,” Lance breathed happily, eyes sparkling as he grasped Keith’s hand in his. “If those guys all got involved, it would be just like those awesome villainous spy movies. Although they’d need super cool and tight outfits with aviators to look badass. Pidge could you rig an explosion in the background after they finish with the guy?”
Pidge rubbed their chin thoughtfully. “Oh yes. We could plant in the enemy’s house.”
“That would be awesome.” Kuro high-fived both Lance and Pidge. Shiro almost groaned. He was going to have to talk to his brother again about what was acceptable to plan with young, impressionable teenagers.
“Yes. Only after making sure no innocent animals were in the house,” Antok added quietly. Pidge nodded.
“Of course, you’re right. We can’t let any poor puppies or kittens get in the crossfire.”
“Or hamsters,” Ulaz added.
“Or tortoises and fish,” Kolivan added. Everyone stared at him and the gruff man simply shrugged. “I have three tortoises growing up. They can be quite cuddly.”
Finally, Shiro laughed, turning everyone’s attention to him. “Alright, as much as I enjoy this grand theft auto moment –”
“Shiro, no one said anything about stealing cars,” Kuro stated firmly.
“There will be no destruction of houses with explosions in the background, nor will there be any manhunting. I’ve got everything taken care of. Right now, Keith needs to go home and rest.” Shiro continued with a disappointed glare towards his brother. Kuro pouted alongside Lance, looking much younger than he actually was.
Keith immediately perked up at the noise, wincing for a moment. Instantly, Shiro felt his gut twist and how he wished to take Keith’s pain away.
“I can leave?” He asked.
“Yeah, as long as you listen to the rules the doctor has set up for you,” Shiro warned before smiling softly. Upon reaching Keith’s bed, he took a moment to observe Keith, wincing at the stark white bandages under Keith’s shirt. Gently, he ran his fingers through Keith’s hair, and Keith leaned back into the touch.
“What kind of rules?” Keith asked quietly.
“Non-negotiable rules,” Shiro chuckled when Keith sighed dramatically. “You’re not to do any physical activity for a month if you want everything to heal properly. You’re also exempted from gym class, but you’ll still pass it. And for the next week or two, it’s mandatory bed rest.”
“What?! Dad, do you know how boring that will be?” Keith groaned. Shiro shook his head and grinned.
“No way, besides you’ll always have your very own source of entertainment,” Shiro replied, causing Keith to frown in confusion.
“What do you mean?”
“Why you have an abundance of friends, uncles, and family who would love to entertain you and serve your needs every single day of your recovery.” Shiro beamed, this time at everyone else in the room. There was something menacing and chilling about his smile, though. Something that sent chills down everyone’s spine and compelled them to do whatever it was that Shiro wished. If only to be rid of that terrifying smile.
“Right!” Kuro said quickly and smiled. “It’ll be great in no time.”
x.V.x
Apparently, entertaining Keith was much harder than anyone thought. Who knew someone could get bored in the middle of a conversation?
Everyone had taken turns keeping Keith entertained and often alternated who was supposed to be watching Keith and when. After a few days, a rigorous schedule was kept keeping everyone’s sanity, and to make sure everyone was pulling their weight.
In Keith’s defense, he was never demanding or pushy, however, there were only so many times he could listen to his Kuro’s one hand puns or hear Kolivan’s detailed explanation on why an eraser was a better weapon than a paperclip.
Though Keith was loathed to admit it out loud, he appreciated all that his friend’s and family were doing for him. He enjoyed each and every one of their company and knew that life would be ten times worse without any of them.
Lance came over alone on Monday. Apparently, he was respecting Keith’s wishes to have a “bonding day” (yes Keith he used quotations). The two spent the day screaming at each other over several video games because one of them would die at the worst moment. Or Keith kept friendly firing at Lance because Lance was a selfish jerk who ate his last twizzler. However, when Shiro came to check on them and suggest something else to do, Keith and Lance both stared at Shiro as if he had lost his head. This was fun.
Tuesday, Hunk, and Pidge came over together. They brought their entire box of robots from the robotics club and held the meeting at the Shirogane house. Together, the three of them built a robot that kept spilling the milk on the floor and another robot that kept swinging poor Red’s leash around. She had been excited about a walk but immediately left when the robots became weird.
Wednesday was Antok’s day and he was surprisingly alone as Kolivan and Ulaz both had to work. Antok had brought over a couple of birds that hung out at the zoo, much to Keith’s inner delight. For hours the two-spent time teaching the bird how to say the most ludicrous things. Such as imitating Keith’s voice to tell Shiro he wanted to live with mermaids and change his name to Estaban. Antok also taught a parrot how to speak Arabic in front of Keith and Shiro.
Ulaz and Kolivan both came over on Thursday with monopoly and board games. Needless to say by the end of the night, a table was flipped, popcorn was spilled and bonds were severed. Keith was victoriously grinning with his hotels spread across the floor, while Ulaz cursed him in his native language about the youthful greed that ate his soul. Kolivan was content with his $45 and small railroad. Shiro was trying hard to not call bankruptcy after his son had charged him for landing on Park Ave with three hotels. Monopoly was forbidden in the Shirogane house after that.
Thace and his wife came over on Fridays to cook meals and keep Keith company while Shiro worked long hours at the rescue center. He was babied by his grandmother and coddled by his grandfather, both of whom refused to let Keith lift a finger. By the time that Shiro had returned home, Keith was swaddled in two more blankets and being fed clam chowder with a movie playing. Of course, Shiro took several pictures.
Saturdays were Kuro’s day to come and “free” Keith from his misery. He often kidnapped Keith and drove him around, with pillows all over his car and around Keith, to get food. The two usually wound up back at Kuro’s apartment, as Kuro told embarrassing (and not-so-embarrassing) childhood stories of Shiro. More often than not, Kuro would get lost in an admirable story of his brother and Keith didn’t have the heart to interrupt him. Not that he wanted to. He loved his uncle’s story and he loved hearing about his father.
Sundays were days that everyone got together at the Shirogane house for breakfast and lunch. Afterwards, only once everyone left would Shiro and Keith be alone for the first time all week. It was nice being surrounded by such a big and loving family, but Keith and Shiro both treasured the moments they had where it was just the two of them.
“It’s time for your pills. Here,” Shiro said softly, handing Keith a water bottle and his pills. Keith smiled gratefully at his dad and took them without complaint. Shiro could see the hidden pain in Keith’s eyes and he knew that Keith had been trying not to vocalize his discomfort. He was stubborn just like Shiro was and it was the biggest flaw that Shiro wished Keith hadn’t gotten from him.
“How are you feeling?” Shiro asked softly, sitting down at Keith’s feet. Keith downed his pills and shrugged.
“Fine.”
“Keith.” Shiro looked pointedly at Keith, causing him to blush lightly.
“Alright, my ribs are really sore,” He admitted. “But they don’t hurt as much as they did when I first hurt them. I swear. Plus, the bruising is finally starting to fade.”
“I saw,” Shiro chuckled. “They’re not a hideous yellow anymore.”
“Thank god.” Keith groaned. “I’m ready to get out of the house again.”
“Uncle Kuro literally picks you up off the couch and out of my house,” Shiro stated.
“And for that, I am still sane,” Keith snickered when Shiro pouted. “You know I get antsy.”
“I know, I know. You’re stubborn just like your grandfather.” Shiro said playfully. He ducked when Keith swatted at him.
“You mean, stubborn just like you?” Keith asked with one eyebrow up.
“Ah,” Shiro rubbed the back of his neck. He refrained from saying anything else when Keith leaned himself against him. Keith’s head was draped over Shiro’s shoulder with his injured ribs tucked against Shiro’s side. Keith curled against Shiro softly and sighed.
“But, I don’t mind quiet nights like this with you,” Keith said softly. “You always take care of me. Thanks, dad.”
“Of course, I’ll always take care of you, kiddo.” Shiro smiled, rubbed his prosthetic hand in Keith’s hair. “That’s what I do.”
“Thanks. You always know how to make me feel better.” Keith said, closing his eyes.
“Because you always make me better,” Shiro answered without hesitation. Keith immediately groaned to himself.
“Dad, that is way too cheesy.”
“Not as cheesy at my homemade mac n’ cheese!”
“…We are not having that a third night in a row.”
“Come on Keith! You know you love it!”
“I don’t have your weird obsession for cheesy noodles.”
“Keeeeith.”
“Daaaaad.”

Voltron MCU/Avengers AU
Ok, so *cracks fingers* let’s do this. I love Marvel, I love Voltron, and I have no self-control. I blame Kat for encouraging me.
@keiths-stupid-mullet, you look at this I wrote all this down on your request.
⋆ Everyone is more or less the same age, and in their 20s/30s, which means open shipping and no discourse. The “Shiro is older but not really” aspect comes from the fact that he was frozen into a Capsicle since WW2.
All of it under the cut.
Shiro as Captain America: The level-headed leader with his morals in the right place, and a load of trauma from the war. He struggles with getting back to the world after being a Capsicle for a few decades, and waking up to find that everyone he once loved is already gone.
Pidge as Iron Woman: Genius, billionaire, nerd, conspiracy theorist. Her parents die in a suspicious car crash in the middle of nowhere, her brother is abducted by aliens, and she has to take over the family business, while she tries to find Matt and the truth behind the accident that killed her parents.
Hunk as Hulk: usually the most gentle and smart scientist you’ll ever meet, you bet he couldn’t hurt a fly, has long complicated talks with Pidge about science-y stuff. But once you hurt him or his friends, you’re in for a giant green monster kicking your ass.
Lance as Hawkeye: in the middle of a ragtag band of super powered friends (and a super spy who’s a complete mystery and seems so much better than him at everything), Lance is just... very good at shooting arrows. You can see where his insecurities would come from here, and he makes up for them with a lot of flirting and bravado. His morals aren’t as clear-cut as Shiro’s, but his heart is in the right place. Will always stand up for his friends and family.
Keith as Black Widow: badass super spy of unknown origin, has a hard time trusting and getting closer to people. Doesn’t know much about his parents, just that his father was involved in the Captain America project (as Professor Abraham Erskine – he made the Super Soldier formula. Shiro knows this but Keith doesn’t). Was raised in S.H.I.E.L.D. as an asset more than as a person, and has a severe case of emotional constipation. Has no idea why Lance seems to hate him so much, but finds the rivalry to be strangely comforting.
Allura as Thor: Sent by her father (Alfor/Odin) to Earth to earn the right to wield Mjolnir again, Allura isn’t in Asgard/Altea when Lotor/Loki, her adopted brother, finds out his origin and brings his real parents and their army to destroy the place he once called home. Unlike in the MCU, here they succeed. Allura has just recovered her powers when Coran appears at Earth and tells her the whole story, and that Zarkon and Lotor will probably be coming for Earth next, for her. She swears revenge, but first she needs to protect earth and find the Infinity Gems.
Coran as Dr. Selvig: Sent by Alfor down to Earth to keep an eye on Allura, and make sure she recovers the Mjolnir and completes it with the Infinity Gems to defeat Zarkon. Knows a lot about a bunch of things.
The Blade of Marmora as S.H.I.E.L.D.
Kolivan as Nick Fury: Badass leader of a slightly dubious organisation? Check. Antok would be that woman who acts as his assistant of sorts.
Thace as Agent Coulson: The main support for the Avengers team, who dies in a confront with Loki/Lotor. His death gives the team motivation to unite and bring an end to Loki/Lotor’s plans.
Ulaz as Winter Soldier: we all know this role was perfect for Shiro, but then Keith would have to be Captain America and that’s just plain wrong, so we again tweaked things a bit. Maybe Hydra would be like, the Garrison, and they had contact with Druid tech and so they made all their weapons and stuff. Ulaz is brainwashed and corrupted by their tech and stuff, but manages to recover in the end.
Matt as Rocket Raccoon: Remember he was abducted by aliens? He had to find a way to escape the evil aliens, and has formed a ragtag resistance with some other not-so-good-but-better aliens, and they have been doing what they can to save the galaxy. Groot is a robot he builds with Olkari alien biotech.
Rolo as Starlord: raised by Ravagers, his morals certainly aren’t in the right place, but he’s still on the side of the resistance... and doing much better at this since Matt joined him.
Nyma as Gamora: hot alien girl with some nice fighting skill and dubious moral code. It works.
Shay as Drax: So, not the violent type, but very strong and innocent. Thanos and his army destroyed her home planet and she seeks revenge.
Zarkon as Thanos: A powerful and greedy entity who wishes to rule the entire universe. Wants the Infinity Gems to help achieve this objective. The Galra Empire would be the Chitauri here.
Haggar: Thanos’ faithful sidekick. For plot purposes, we are tweaking that around and making her (along with the rest of the druids) a Frost Giant, hence Lotor, her child with Zarkon (in this AU, who knows whose child he is in canon), is also a Frost Giant and they have a bone to pick with Asgard/Altea.
Lotor as Loki: there’s a conflict between Asgard/Altea and the Frost Giants/Druids + Chitauri/Galra + Thanos/Zarkon. Asgard emerges victorious in one of their battles and Alfor ends up finding and adopting baby Lotor, and raising him as Asgardian/Altean and his son, but clearly favours Allura over him. When Lotor finds out, he joins with his father and mother to bring an end to Asgard/Altea. Different from the Marvel version, here they succeed, and only Allura escapes the fate of her people due to being on Earth on her quest to get back her right to wield Mjolnir.
Voltron as the Infinity Gems: we’re tweaking things a bit again here, but we can make the Infinity Gems Asgardian/Altean, and instead of the Infinity Gauntlet, we could have slots for them in Allura’s Mjolnir, which would be the only way to defeat Zarkon/Thanos and his army. Alfor/Odin would have split the stones from the hammer, thrown Mjolnir and Allura to Earth so she could learn to be worthy of it, and the gems would find people worthy of them.
Conveniently for the plot, each of the gems would find one of the Paladins/Avengers: Shiro gets the Time Gem, Keith the Space Gem, Pidge the Mind Gem, Hunk the Power Gem, Lance the Soul Gem and Matt (!) the Reality Gem.
Ok, now that we have our characters settled, let’s go for the actual plot.
For the first Avengers, Lotor finds out Allura is on Earth, and comes to build a portal so Zarkon’s forces can come and lay the planet to waste. Kolivan needs to assemble a team to stop him. Pretty much the same plot as the original movie, we just might have to tweak some people placement, and Pidge doesn’t have Stark’s ego. Also, there might be some kind of tension between Keith and Shiro, from the later knowing about the other’s origins. And because I love the whole idea of Keith being half-evil-alien, and in Norse mythology not ALL giants are evil, Keith’s mom could be a Frost Giant who somehow fell in love and... bred with a human. There might be some glitch about Lotor’s sceptre that makes it that only a Frost Giant could use it, and... Keith can. That’s how at the end he manages to use the sceptre to dismantle the device and close the portal.
Lotor manages to escape, though, because we don’t have an Asgard that Allura can take him to, and he’ll probably need to appear again later.
So they have solved the problem for now, but Zarkon still isn’t defeated for good, and he’s still after the Infinity Gems. So he and his army have to take the long way to Earth, and that gives them time to get all the Infinity Gems, including the one with Matt, and set it in the Mjolnir. At the end, they manage to defeat Zarkon and his army and it’s a happy end.
In the meantime, before they assemble the Gems with the hammer and defeat Zarkon, we get Ultron... which is Pidge’s tech corrupted by druid tech, so it’s basically a Robeast.
Alright, I basically came up with all of this today, so excuse minor mistakes and not-so-carefully-thought-out details. I may or may not decide to write something on it eventually, but I don’t really want to because it sounds troublesome (and also I have like 300 WIPs as it is) so if someone else does it I’ll be relieved to be honest.
Thanks for reading! If anyone is interested in me doing this for the SpiderKeith AU, let me know! I have that one pretty much all thought out too.
Yami out! *salute*

It would be cute to see the first time Antok and all of them have to baby sit a little Keith while Shiro is on a date. They suggest a game, and little Keith who just got into Ninjas, insists that he is a ninja and everyone else is the bad guys. Antok and them agree thinking it would be easy to find Keith and "defeat" him. But they are wrong so wrong. Keith is really sneaky and quiet when he wants to be. Shiro comes home to his friends all in serious mode looking for Keith hoping to "defeat" him
Yes, this is how we do it in this AU. Some super fluff after that angsty one-shot earlier today. Perfect. Oh, man, can you guys tell how much I love adding Antok, Ulaz, and Kolivan into this AU? Or Kuro? Or Lance, Hunk and Pidge? In fact, I love writing everyone into this AU. This was a blast to write so I hope that you too, nonny, will enjoy it!
x.V.x
Keith was very lucky in which he had a very, very big family. It wasn’t just him and his daddy Shiro, as Shiro had feared it possibly would be. No, there was grandma Shirogane and grandpa Shirogane. There was Kuro, whom no one had ever thought would be back in their lives, but everyone took it as a placing. There was also Allura and her family, along with Coran. There was Lance and his mami, papi and many siblings, along with Hunk his parents and his sister. There was also Pidge, her brother Matt and their mother. Then there was also Antok, Ulaz and Kolivan.
So, yeah, Keith did have a big family and he didn’t mind it.
It took a few years for his family to get as big as it was, especially with Antok, Ulaz and Kolivan but Keith couldn’t picture it any other way. He loved all of his uncles and aunts, friends and grandparents. Plus, he was a little bit spoiled in a family so big.
With such a big family, there was never a missed opportunity to watch over Keith when Shiro needed to go out. As Keith continuously got older, Shiro had gotten better about leaving the house without Keith. Now he could go a whole eight hours before the first check-in call.
Usually, the family members and friends often rotated on who would watch Keith. Tonight, it was Antok’s turn which meant that Ulaz and Kolivan were sure to show up too. Not that Shiro or Keith minded it. Shiro appreciated the more eyes on Keith and Keith loved to play with all three of his uncles.
“Alright. Emergency contact numbers are –” Shiro began, fiddling with the buttons to the collar of his shirt. He was a bit nervous as today he had a big date with a guy that he’d been flirting with for a couple of weeks now. Actually, Keith was the whole reason that Shiro had gotten this date, after admitting out loud that his dad’s attempts at trying to woo the cute waiter at their café was just pitiful. Thankfully the man had just laughed and asked Shiro out to dinner.
“On the side of the fridge, right next to the house phone.” Antok nodded seriously, while Kolivan and Ulaz both rolled their eyes. By now, they had Shiro’s goodbye speech memorized.
“And his epi-pen is –”
“One is right in the kitchen, the first drawer to the left. The other is next to your bedside.” Kolivan answered, giving Keith a bounce in his arms. The eight-year-old beamed happily, as Ulaz pulled a humorous face at him.
“And my number, in case you need me -”
“Shiro, your number is probably the only number we have memorized.” Ulaz chuckled, looking away from Keith to stare at his friend. Shiro finished buttoning up his shirt only to rub the back of his neck sheepishly.
“Sorry. I know you can handle this. I don’t know why I always have to keep giving you this speech.” He chuckled, accepting a pat on the back from his friends.
“You are a father Takashi. It’s only natural to worry for Keith’s safety,” Antok murmured quietly. His face mask had already been removed the moment he had entered the house, with Keith standing out the door and hand outstretched. Similar to how he treated Shiro’s arm, Keith would not allow Antok to wear the mask inside their home. “Even if that worry isn’t necessary.”
“You’re right. You’re right.” Shiro smiled, ruffling Keith’s hair. Keith pouted dramatically, swatting at Shiro’s hands.
“Daddy, no. You need to leave already. You’re going to be late for Eric.” Keith grumbled. He graciously accepted a kiss and hug from his dad, before Shiro was waving goodbye and walking out the front door. Keith’s eyes didn’t linger on the door after it closed as long as they used to when he was younger. Instead after a few seconds, he squirmed to be put down before beaming at his uncles.
“Well, little kit, what shall we play today?” Ulaz smiled softly. Keith’s tummy fluttered at the nickname and he smiled shyly. His three uncles were the only ones allowed to call him a kit, just like how his daddy would call him his little star.
“Um, hmmm. It can’t be too boring or easy,” Keith tapped his chin out of thought, looking very much like his dad in this pose. He was obviously learning a few habits just from watching his dad. “Since you were special ops like daddy, so maybe not tag.”
“How about hide-and-seek?” Ulaz suggested. Keith pondered the thought for a few seconds, nose scrunching up.
“Hm, that sounds too easy,” Keith admitted.
“Not if you’re a ninja,” Kolivan said. Keith momentarily froze, staring with wide, blue eyes at the ex-captain. It was almost as if stars were shining in Keith’s eyes with excitement, and Kolivan wouldn’t be surprised if there were actual stars in the boy’s eyes. He was special after all.
“A ninja?” Keith whispered in awe. Recently, he had just started watching a cartoon on Saturdays that was all about ninjas. And about how awesome they were. Like that they could climb trees and walk on water, or throw pointy stars at the enemy. They were so cool!
“Yeah, only ninjas are the best at winning hide-and-seek because they are super sneaky. The best really.” Kolivan nodded seriously. Ulaz and Antok both snorted at the deadpanned face on their captains face, before nodding along. “Besides, it’s not just hide-and-seek.”
“No?” If Keith were an anime character, his eyes would be bigger than his face and twinkling with lights all around him. He was practically hanging off every one of Kolivan’s words, that he didn’t notice when Ulaz took a picture (nope, this was definitely not going to be his phone wallpaper) or when Antok demanded that Ulaz send him that picture.
“No, little kit, a ninja must defeat his enemy,” Kolivan replied causing Keith to squeal with excitement. “That doesn’t just mean finding your opponent but that means that you must be so sneaky that you catch them!” Kolivan whispered with a snap of his fingers and Keith instantly started clapping.
“Yes, yes, ninjas! Ninjas!” Keith cheered excitedly while Kolivan smirked at his two friends. The other two shared an exasperated look before breaking into smiles of their own. This could actually be fun. Suddenly, though, Keith stopped in all of his excitement with a fierce frown on his face.
“Wait, we gotsta look like ninjas,” Keith said quietly, causing his uncles to blink in confusion. “You know? Masked faces and all dark and macho.” Keith puffed out his chest while trying to hide his face. Of course, Ulaz, Kolivan, and Antok would deny that either of them was seconds away from cooing at their nephew like a bunch of school girls.
“Ah, I think we can figure something out,” Ulaz smirked.

Their target had been acquired.
Until they were suddenly the targets.
“Holy fudge donuts,” Ulaz panted quietly. “I didn’t know he was so fast. Did either of you know he was so fast?” He was currently hiding behind one of the couches in the living room, out of breath with Kolivan and Antok next to them. Antok was scanning the room with such an intense look on his face and Kolivan was obviously trying to strategize.
“No. Shiro never warned us.” Antok murmured softly, trying to make as little noise as possible.
“He was last seen in the hallway. Meaning he must be hiding out in one of the bedrooms since he has to come through the living room to get out of the hallway, and we haven’t seen him come out yet.” Kolivan mumbled to himself.
“Captain, I detect movement in the kitchen.” Antok’s voice was gentle like a soft breeze.
“What?!” Kolivan and Ulaz both hissed, scrambling to see where Antok was looking. Briefly, they saw a dark shadow running across the kitchen.
“How did he get past us?! He had to go through this room to get in there?” Kolivan hissed sharply.
“Unless there are other passages that we do not know about,” Antok replied.
“He knows this territory better than any of us. He definitely has an advantage there.” Ulaz rubbed a hand tiredly over his face. “What do we do now, captain?” Both Antok and Ulaz turned to their captain, with looks that told Kolivan that these men would follow him to the end of Earth. He was honored to be fighting alongside with such brilliant and brave men.
“We need to split up. He’s trying to capture us all at once,” Kolivan admitted gravely.
“Captain, are you sure that’s a good idea?” Ulaz whispered softly. Kolivan’s hands clenched into fists on his legs before he nodded sadly. “Alright. I’ll take the east wing.” With that, Ulaz was flipping himself over the couch and silently racing towards the dining room.
“I’ll take the northern rooms.” Antok murmured, heading over towards the hallway, blending into the darkness of the house. For a few more moments, Kolivan sat behind the couch and sighed heavily.
“May God have mercy on our souls.”
x.V.x
Ulaz knew he was being quieter than silence. How that was possible, Ulaz did not know. Yet, he felt as if he were panting like a poor donkey being forced out in the hot sun all day. His feet felt like he was walking on broken glass and shattering with every step he took.
His eyes scanned for their target.
He had lost sight of him while ducking under the table earlier.
The two had stared each other down, ready to face death. It was like a silent dance now, and neither was taking the first steps.
From the corner of his eyes, he could see movement darting towards the garage. Plenty of hiding spaces there. Ulaz calculated that he could probably make it to the door before the shadow could. He had no doubt that the shadow was none other than his target. He calculated the probability that this could be a trap, but figured that there was no way that an eight-year-old thought like that.
Quieter than anyone else on the planet, Ulaz crept towards the garage. He maneuvered himself to be position in the dark, just as a figure darted towards him. Hands at the ready, Ulaz smiled and awaited victory.
He reached out and grabbed the squirming figure, laughing triumphally…
…only to be met with a slobbering tongue to his face.
Blinking, Ulaz was horrified to realize that it was Red who he had captured and not his intended target. He barely had time to register new movement from the darkness behind him, and he could only turn around to catch a glimpse of blue eyes that looked violet in the dark, staring back at him.
“Incredible,” Ulaz whispered, resigned to his fate, just as his target pulled down his weapon onto Ulaz.
x.V.x
“Gosh dangit. He got Ulaz.” Kolivan hissed, sprinting silently throughout the house. His heart was beating wildly in his chest and a sad song was ringing in his ears for his fallen comrade. He prayed that Antok wouldn’t suffer the same fate at Ulaz when a quiet creaking noise made him freeze.
Kolivan ducked into the nearest room, which happened to be a tight mud room, as he scanned the hallway before him. For a while, he couldn’t detect any sudden movements, but he remained in position.
Their target was smarter than they gave him credit for.
He would not make the same mistake as Ulaz.
Kolivan was well aware that the traitorous Red was guarding Ulaz’s body, which meant that their target could not use that trick on them. Kolivan briefly smiled to himself and he scanned the hallway once more.
“Where are you, little kit?”
“Not out there.” Kolivan felt as if his blood had turned to ice at the whisper in his ears. He was chilled down to the bone and frozen with disbelief. How? How did he get in without Kolivan realizing?
Kolivan’s eyes darted down towards a small cupboard on the floor, one that seemed impossible for anyone to fit into. Yet, here was their target crawling out of it easily. Kolivan gawked.
“How?”
“It was pretty easy to know where you’d duck into for cover.” The eight-year-old grinned in the dark. “I just had to wait for you to come as I knew you would.”
“You got Ulaz.”
Suddenly, Kolivan felt a weapon drawn down at his torso.
“No hard feelings, uncle.” Then the weapon struck down.

“My brothers, I am sorry. But I will avenge you.”

Shiro was quite happy when he returned home near midnight. The date had gone spectacularly well and there was already a second date planned. Best of all, there were no phone calls from his friends, meaning that everything with Keith must have gone well. Shiro imagined that Keith must have gone to bed a couple of hours ago and the boys were probably eating and watching old dramas on tv.
He was pleasantly surprised to see parts of his house turned upside down, Ulaz lying on the floor with his eyes closed and Red happily laying on top of him. Kolivan was sprawled out with half of his body in the mudroom and half in the hallway. There were terrible cutouts of ninja stars all over the floor with pillows flipped and curtains pulled back.
Shiro blinked in surprise when he saw Antok stalking through the house, in a manner that Shiro hadn’t seen since their days in the military. What was most interesting was the scarf wrapped around Antok’s head and mouth, leaving only his eyes uncovered.
“What is going on?” Shiro stammered and instantly Antok’s eyes were on him. Shiro swallowed, seeing the predatory look in Antok’s eyes. That was never a good thing.
“You’re his father! I can certainly use you as bait!” Antok announced before grabbing Shiro and throwing him over his shoulder. Shiro was embarrassed to admit that he had yelped loudly and cursed at Ulaz and Kolivan’s quiet laughter. It was no surprise that Antok could easily carry Shiro. In fact, he probably could carry all of his friends at once.
Antok, what is going on? What the hell?!” Shiro gaped in surprise when Antok led him all throughout the house.
“You are bait. There’s no way he’d let you get hurt.” Antok said gruffly, shoving Shiro on a couch. He silently checked all of the doorways around him, before a stunned Shiro felt himself being wrapped up tightly in a blanket. Shiro squirmed suddenly but found that he could barely move a centimeter while tied up like this. He was like a tight burrito, held together by a softy tortilla blanket.
“Who are you talking about? Where’s Keith? Antok, I demand that you release me.” Shiro grumbled, trying to keep from laughing. Antok eyed him warily, but his eyes were amused.
“You are the traitor’s father. He has taken Ulaz and Kolivan from me, so he must pay.” Antok murmured softly. “He will understand my pain once he sees that I have you.”
“Antok,”
“Daddy?!”
Shiro struggled to look over the couch to see Keith staring at him in horror. He almost snorted out loud when he saw that Keith had several scarves wrapped around him, with one wrapped around his head and face similar to Antok.
“How could you?!” Keith gasped dramatically, ignoring his father.
“You left me no choice little kit, after what you did to Ulaz and Kolivan,” Antok admitted quietly.
“They lost. Accept their defeat.” Keith sniffed, arms raised at this sides.
“Then you will lose your father.” Antok replied solemnly. Suddenly, he pulled out the most pathetic, paper knife from his pocket and slowly Shiro began to piece together the puzzle. He could already fill a headache coming on.
“You wouldn’t. He’s your friend!” Keith said sharply, pulling out his own paper ninja stars.
“And you were once my nephew, I thought.”
“Antok please.”
“I’m sorry kit.” Antok looked saddened before he was facing Shiro and bringing the paper knife down on Shiro. Keith shrieked (but it wasn’t a real scream), and all Shiro saw was a dark blur flying over him and crawling over Antok. Antok grunted, struggling (while trying to make sure he could hold the person upright) against his attacker before a paper star smushed into his neck. His eyes widened before he dropped heavily to his knees.
A tiny giggle erupted from the figure clinging to him before he crawled off him and Antok turned to face Keith and Shiro.
“I…will…have my…revenge…”
With that, Antok flopped to the floor eyes closed and Keith was clapping. Quickly, Keith ran over and began to untangle his dad from his prison of blankets.
“You’re okay daddy! I saved you!” Keith announced happily, pulling down his face scarf slightly.
“My, my, what a brave young ninja. Thank you, sir.” Shiro swooned happily, scooping Keith into a hug. Keith giggled loudly and wrapped his arms around Shiro’s neck. “But if I remember correctly, a certain ninja’s bedtime was at nine?”
“Ninjas don’t have bedtimes!” Keith shouted happily, just as Antok was sitting up and Ulaz and Kolivan were entering the room. One of Shiro’s eyebrows rose and he stared at his friends with an unimpressed look. Each of them sheepishly rubbed their necks.
“Well, I think one little ninja is getting tired,” Shiro tweaked Keith’s nose as the boy let out a mighty yawn. Keith snuggled up against his dad tiredly.
“Did you have fun with your uncles at least?” Shiro asked softly, twirling Keith’s hair under the scarf. Keith immediately nodded despite how tired he was.
“Yes. I love playing with Uncle Kolivan, Uncle Ulaz and Uncle Antok. They are great at these games.” Keith mumbled tiredly. Shiro laughed and nodded in agreement.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, we already planned a pirate’s capture during your next date with Eric,” Keith whispered before drifting off to sleep, leaving his father to stare at his friends again. Antok simply shrugged.
“What? It was pretty obvious you and this guy would hit it off.”
