I saw Captain America: Brave New World and loved it, but I got a few questions about this place.

Where is it? What is it? How can he afford it since in FATWS he was living at his old house, but now there's this slick new space he has with a ton of pictures of his loved ones, memorabilia, high tech and his gear is stored.

Is the government paying him for missions? Has the Air Force restored his benefits? How is Joaquin there? Are they roommates or does he have a key?

Legacy of The Falcon

Here's the thing about the Falcon mantel that a lot of people might be overlooking. Sam Wilson, The Falcon, was created out of solidarity for the Civil Rights movement. It's not by accident that the first African American superhero (and note, I said "African American", not Black) was created to be partners with Captain America.

The creators of Sam Wilson wanted to fight back against the idea that African Americans, who at the time were fighting for Civil Rights, were just as much a part of the fabric of the United States as white people.

During the Civil Rights Movement, so many critics of pushed the rhetoric that Black Americans were ungrateful and did not belong in this country. Sam Wilson was created to prove them wrong.

And now, we have another Falcon who is of Mexican descent. He is an undocumented immigrant that exists in a time when all immigrants (whether documented or not) have a target on their backs. He exists during a time when Mexicans/Latino communities are under threat.

And he soars with Captain America. And just like his predecessor, Joaquin exists to show that immigrants belong in this country.

The Falcon isn't simply a mantel, it's a symbol of the fight against American bigotry and hatred. The Falcon, when he's partnered with his Captain, shows Americans of all backgrounds what our country is made up of. And I've loved seeing Joaquin and Sam fight together since their first comic appearance. And I loved seeing their relationship in BNW.

Sam Wilson fights for an America that extends humanity to everyone, and to see a Black man fight for that ideal while also having a Mexican man stand by his side is the perfect continuation of the message that Marvel created back in the 60's.

This country is for everyone.

Another small thing about MY CAP

I haven't seen many people bring this up so I'm gonna say it.

When Isaiah went off in the White House, the very first thing Sam did is to pull Torres back and make sure he stay behind him. OMG. That detail is just killing me.

It reminds me of the bar scene in TFATWS, where he did the exact same thing for Bucky:

He didn't even think twice.

And all the Don't-get-yourself-killed speech……He's just a human being himself but trying to protect everyone he cares about. He put all the responsibility on him without even saying a word. Just like a mommy for everyone. So beautiful🥹

Everyone, please go watch Captain America: Brave New World. I beg you. Please don’t listen to the critics; they are biased and a lot of people are complaining because “Sam shouldn’t be Captain America—Bucky should be” or “Chris Evan’s is better” or “People will never accept a Black Captain America”. Anthony Mackie has done an amazing job and he deserves all the accolades. He deserves to have a successful movie. I feel like no matter what though, Sam Wilson/Anthony is never going to be seen as his own character without being compared to the original. I’m already hearing from people that Sam will always be BLACK Falcon to them. And it’s disappointing. The same qualities Sam has in the film, which Tumblr especially would be making dozens of gifsets of or writing metas of, etc isn’t happening but I think would be happening if Sam was a white character. Tumblr is giving his sidekick more love and posts than Sam. Sam is the HEART and SOUL of the story. “Well the plot was slow”—why does that matter when Sam is an amazing character with depth? If the film had the same plot and pacing but Bucky Barnes was the main character, I think people would be losing their minds and saying how much they loved it and Tumblr would be obsessing in its usual fashion and making meta about how wonderful Bucky was. Sam has been in the “Magical Negro” film trope since Captain America: Winter Soldier, and now that he’s not anymore, I’m being told that Sam doesn’t fit the role as Captain and should be Bucky’s sidekick. I shouldn’t be upset—The Falcon and The Winter Soldier show already predicted people would react this way. I just hope it doesn’t rob Anthony of a sequel. I just want it to be successful. I could continue to write a whole essay about this, but I’m going to conclude by saying: I beg y’all to watch it—even if you think you’d hate it for whatever reason. I need Anthony to have this win.
