Suddenly thinking about a recovering Bucky Barnes.

His brain was obviously heavily damaged due to all the times he was given electroshocks to forget, but do you think he had any other issues besides memory displacement and memory loss? Seizures? Tics? Stuttering? Tremors? Headaches? Chronic fatigue? Not to mention his PTSD from everything that happened to him while he was under Hydra’s control and from the war itself. I’m willing to bet Hydra hardly fed him or let him sleep (the closest he could ever get was being put under). I also can’t imagine all the kinds of drugs they also would’ve given him to keep him more compliant and submissive, so there’s withdrawal symptoms to consider, too.

When he’s eventually in a place to actually take care of himself/be taken care of, I imagine his serum would finally be able to catch up and heal some of the damage, rather than just doing the bare minimum and keeping him functioning. But it obviously wouldn’t heal everything. He still forgets, still sometimes wakes up and thinks it’s WW2 or is startled to find that Steve is no longer small. Sometimes he loses the light in his eyes and asks what his mission is and insists that he’s ready to comply. Sometimes he doesn’t speak for days. Sometimes all he can do is lay in bed with the lights turned off and the curtains closed, leaving him in total darkness as his head aches and aches..

But he loses his stutter over time, unless he’s particularly overwhelmed or his thoughts are just too fast for his mouth to keep up with. He doesn’t tic as much. He no longer eyes all possible exits or keeps hidden weapons on him all the time. He remembers his childhood and his family. He has an appetite again. He opens himself up to others. He smiles and teases and laughs. He is able to love and allows himself to be loved.

Bucky Barnes’ mother had always said he was a resilient kid. And, these days, he’s so glad that she was right.

No but why does he say that?

Steve sees him without the mask, says his name, and the soldier responds, "Who the hell is Bucky?" before getting back to trying to kill him. Why?

Sure, he couldn't speak up until now, he's been in the muzzle, but what about the way the soldier carries himself makes you think he's the type of guy to ask stupid questions? He's a weapon. And it is a stupid question, for the record – one which he pauses the fight to ask. Bucky is barely a name! Bucky's some shit they made up because his middle name was Buchanan! If someone randomly said the word "bucky" to you without the context of "Bucky Barnes", your reaction wouldn't be "who?" it would be "what?"

So Steve flips off the muzzle and says a word, and I can only assume it freaks the soldier out real bad without him even realising it. That's a name. He doesn't know whose, so he pauses for just a second to ask. Rookie error. Bad move. Then the fight resumes.

Steve: *to Sam, who is sat next to him, reading his newspaper* its great to see Bucky be himself again

Sam: *not looking his way,but smiling* yeah man, i know

Steve: it’s so great that he remembers everything from our past now

Sam: Uh huh *flips pages*

Steve: it’s just so great *the fork in his hand crumples*

Bucky: *sat on the couch, surrounded by Tony, Natasha and Clint* so then, Steve had to apologize to the poor girls parents because she went home crying thanks to his lecture

*everyone gawks at him before laughing*

Bucky: all over her leaving some pasta on her plate

Tony: remind me to hide my plate from Rogers after dinner

Natasha: *mock complaing* Steve, Clint left his bread crusts on his plate today

*more snickers*

Steve: *gritting his teeth* so great *fork crumbles into a ball*

Sam: *giving him the side eye over the newspaper * really man? Leftovers?

Steve: *embarrassed, gently placing the then-fork-now-ball next to his plate, mumbles* the pasta was expensive

I'm sure all the Bucky stans know this but there are a lot of us who don't so I need to say this and then shout it from the roof tops for the rest of you

During World War 2 in America the enlisted troops serial number started with 12 and the drafted troops started with 32

Bucky's serial number is 32557038 (yes I do know that off by heart)

His number starts with 32...

Our boy was drafted, he didn't enlist and juding by the year he was probably drafted due to the Service and Enlistment Act

But did not choose to go to war, he was forced.

Just let that sink in

Because I cannot get over the fact that James Barnes never wanted to go to war, and Steve Rogers desperately wanted to be fit enough to enlist had swapped places

That parallel is insane

And I cannot believe that Marvel has never adressed the fact that Bucky went through all the shit he did because he was drafted. He didn't go in knowing the risks because he didn't choose to become a soldier, that choice was made for him, and thanks to the choice his life was a living hell since then
