Honoring one and every woman and girl on the planet
A myriad of events is being planned all over Monaco on and around March 8, 2019, joining the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day. The objective is to strive for a more gender-balanced world and to achieve that we all unite in highlighting women’s achievements, raise consciousness against bias and take action for equality.
So even if you are not among the women interviewed, nor happen to appear in one of the campaign’s photos, nor featured in one of the books being published on this occasion, all of us ladies are being celebrated together with our sisters all over the world and the men who love us!
SheCanHeCan – Women of Monaco Life Series
SheCanHeCan, created by Vibeke Brask Thomsen (photo insert) in 2011, is a Monaco based organization aiming to inspire and support girls to take leadership roles, encouraging girls and boys to challenge deeply-held, life-limiting gender stereotypes and strive to realize their full potential.
The association works relentlessly to recognize the achievements and contributions of great female leaders, in the belief that looking back, we can inspire a better future.
In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, SheCanHeCan interviewed Eight women in the Principality as part of their Women of Monaco Life Series, by telling their stories. This year the women featured are: Kathleen Jones form Etiquette & Decorum, former professional skier Claudia Morandini, Emma Jarach owner of My Jemma Resortwear, Jessica Sbaraglia who created Terre de Monaco, Karen Aliprendi de Carvalho candidate of the Primo list and member of UFM, Lou Grether Director of Artcurial Monaco, Natasha Frost, President of Pink Ribbon, and Rachel Lachat, Rudder Bunker Trader.

They were asked to respond to three questions that were developed into interviews: What does success look like to you? What is the main thing that needs to change to improve entry into your field of work, including opportunities for development and the day-to-day life of women at work? Tell us about a woman you admire and how she’s inspired you to become who you are today?
Every one of the accomplished women selected opened up their hearts to share their feelings and experiences, candidly telling their stories and inspiring others. SheCanHeCan strives to highlight the talented, compassionate and motivated women from all walks of life, and diverse fields, thus unveiling the true makeup of our community, over and beyond all that glitters.
The women featured firmly believe that only hard work and perseverance makes dreams come true; they define success as the ability to do what you are passionate about, what makes you really happy, success looks like a big smile, or as simply finding proper balance in life, a sense of accomplishment and peace; they affirm that education is a right and wisdom is the sum of all your experiences, good and bad. We invite you to read the full interviews on the SheCanHeCan website/Publications, as you will find them revealing, interesting and inspiring.

The Naked Soul project
CREM (Club des Residents Etrangers de Monaco) is engaged with women through the publishing of an Artbook/Calendar, featuring 16 women active in the life of the Principality. The project was created by Louisette Levy-Soussan Azzoaglio, in collaboration with the famous photographer of actresses and models Amedeo M. Turello, under the title “The Naked Soul”.
Women accepted to be photographed at the Hermitage Hotel, to present an idea of beauty that is natural and frank, away from fashion clichés and the banalities of a world that very often portray women in search of esthetic perfection and eternal youth. It will be a calendar from March 8, 2019, to March 7, 2020, to mark International Women’s Day.

The live open-air painting performance brought under the same sky 10 of the greatest talented street and graffiti artists, coming from the four coins of the world, for an environmentally conscious art extravaganza on the theme “La planete a croquer”(a play of words meaning a planet to draw or chew). Prince Albert visited the artists and as he did last year, and he once again got hold of a can of paint leaving his royal imprint on one of the artworks.

Over Euro 52,000 were raised, but it is just a provisional amount as the remaining pieces will be sold at a later date, and the final sum minus organizational costs will be delivered in October to the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation whose goal is to foster environmental protection worldwide through a myriad of projects.

World AIDS Day – United in the fight to end the epidemic
Thursday, December 1, 2016, was World AIDS Day, an opportunity for people all over the world to unite in the fight against HIV. The date was designed in 1987 and is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning of those who have died of the disease. The 2016 Federal theme is “Leadership. Commitment. Impact.”
On this occasion, HSH Princess Stephanie, Founder and President of Fight Aids Monaco (FAM) as well as UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador and her team, organized different communication and prevention operations, as well as their traditional art-auction fundraising event benefiting their association.
Test in the City
On Wednesday, November 23, 2016, the operation “Test in the City” marked its 7th year in the Principality in partnership with the Princess Grace Hospital, its Emergency Service, as well as the Monegasque Red Cross. It is an anonymous screening test, free of charge and fast, with results within 10 minutes. In French the kit is known as TROD (Test Depistage rapide a Orientation Diagnostique), equivalent to Rapid HIV Testing in English, and enables to detect anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2 antibodies by a simple finger prick, than can easily be carried out by non-medical people who are nevertheless trained in this procedure.
The main objective of this screening is to keep people informed of the latest scientific advances, learn how to protect oneself and others, and most importantly put an end to stigma and discrimination.

Memorial Quilts displayed at Oceanographic Museum
The 6th edition of the AIDS Memory Quilts (Courtepointes in French), are works of art on canvas, both individual and collective that honors AIDS victims. In 1987 the “Names Project Aids Memorial Quilt” foundation came up with this initiative to illustrate the devastation caused by the disease. Each quilt is made of 8 canvas sewn to each other, over a surface of 4m x 4m, all bearing the name of a victim and they were all produced by people of Fight Aids Monaco, most of them living with HIV. These quilts were exposed in the Honor Hall of the Oceanographic Museum on Monday, November 28. It is a way to honor the victims and a heartfelt message that they will never sink into oblivion.

The close collaboration among the Department of Education, the Direction of Health and Social Affaires and the Center for Free Anonymous Screening, has enabled college students to attend interactive workshops and conference on AIDS. The objective is to establish a useful dialogue with the students to create awareness on the evolution of the AIDS epidemic, new available treatments, emphasizing the need for individual protection and prevention.

Monaco participates in 39th UNAIDS session in Geneva
A Monegasque delegation, lead by H.E. Carole Lanteri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco at the UN in Geneva (see photo insert), participated in the 39th session of the Coordination Council Program (CCP) of UNAIDS, in Geneva from December 6-8, 2016.
The joint UN program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) reunites the efforts of 11 UN institutions and mobilises the international community to end the Aids by 2030, in the framework of the sustainable development objectives.
Reuniting twice a year, the CCP in the directing organism of UNAIDS. It is composed of 22 elected member states, representatives of UNAIDS organisms and lay participants. In its quality of council member, the Principality represents its circumscription that includes Germany, France and the Principality of Liechtenstein, as it happened already in 2008 and 2011.
The discussions focused on the financial crisis that UNAIDS is experiencing and the efforts to revitalize the Joint Program in order to reinforce its cohesion, its transparency and efficacy in its response to AIDS.
The most notable advances are in treatment access. In spite of that, the number of new infections has decreased only slightly in certain regions of the world, notably in oriental Europe, and the risk of infection by HIV remains particularly elevated among young women. The Principality of Monaco, has again emphasized over the importance of taking preventive measures, as the only way to stop the propagation of the epidemic.
