Animal of the Day!
Warty Frogfish (Antennarius maculatus)
Tumblr media
(Photo from the Aquarium Club)
Conservation Status-
Habitat- Indian Ocean coral reefs; Pacific Ocean coral reefs
Size (Weight/Length)- 15 cm
Diet- Small fish; Shrimp; Small crabs
Cool Facts- The warty frogfish is the master of coral reef camouflage. Over the span of a few weeks, they can turn their coloration to match their surroundings. Even in bleached coral reefs, warty frogfish can turn white to match the dead corals. A specially adapted lure with a bait-like juts from their forehead. Although it normally lays flat on their back, when hunting they use this lure to bring fish into striking range. Their modified pectoral fins that look like feet are used to walk across corals and the ocean floor rather than swim. In open water, warty frogfish can swim although they prefer walking when searching for prey.
Rating- 13/10 (Females have a taste for cannibalism.)

The warty frogfish or clown frogfish (Antennarius maculatus) is a marine fish belonging to the family Antennariidae. The warty frogfish grows up to 15 cm (5.9 in) long and lives in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. The skin is covered with numerous small, wart-like protuberances and its coloring is extremely variable because it tends to match its living environment. Frogfishes have the capacity to change coloration and pigment pattern in a few weeks : during coral bleaching events, they can even turn to plain white to blend in with the environment. However, the dominant coloration goes from white to black, passing through a whole range of related nuances such as cream, pink, yellow, red, and brown, often with dark, circular spots and/or with saddles.

Antennarius maculatus or the Clown Frogfish
Just like the octopus, the Clown Frogfish can change color to hide from predators, which are moray eels and other Frogfish, and to ambush prey. Unlike most fish, they don’t have swim bladders (which is what essentially gives a fish buoyancy) so they use their pectoral fins to “walk” the sea floor. They can also push large amounts of water through their gills as a form of propulsion.

what’s your top ten aquarium fish wish list?
It’s a little hard to whittle it down to just ten: do I go for the top ten that are realistic price-wise and considering the space I’ll likely have? Do I list the top ten dreamy but never-in-a-million-years fish? Fresh? Salt?
Ah well, here is what I came up with today. In no particular order:
Rhinogobious zhoui (sometimes called the Scarlet Goby, but the common name is super variable)
Tumblr media
Doryrhamphus excisus (Bluestripe Pipefish)
Tumblr media
Breeding pair of a Parosphromenus species (Liquorice Gourami: I’m not picky I love them all)
Tumblr media
Antennarius maculatus (Painted or Clown Frogfish)
Tumblr media
Scleromystax barbatus (Banded “cory”)
Tumblr media
Plectranthias inermis (Geometric Perchlet)
Tumblr media
A group of Demekin, provided space for a large tank or pond.
Tumblr media
Ptereleotris grammica (Lined Dartfish)
Tumblr media
Trimma caudomaculatum (Often misidentified as T. tevegae, the blue-striped cave goby)
Tumblr media
stiphodon rutilaureus (one of my favourite LFS had them and I fell in love)
Tumblr media
And that’s the first ten wish-fish I thought of today. There are tons more, for example a few of the Psudomugil species (blue-eyes), rainbow emperor tetra, and some dream fish that are just tooooo ‘spensive, like Anampses lennardi.

Clown Frog Fish (say whhhaaattt???)
A colorful and multipurpose fishy!
Tumblr media
A Clown Frogfish is one weird creature! it hides within the coral of its home and rocks until something tasty swims by!
Sometimes called the Warty Frogfish (ewww), It’s vibrant colors attract prey, which is lunch for them.
“A frogfish’s mouth can expand to 12 times its resting size. This allows it to catch all sorts of prey. Because frogfish lack a swim bladder, they use their modified pectoral fins to walk, or even gallop, across the seafloor!!!!!”
More Facts:
Scientific name:  Amphiprioninae
Taxonomic Classification: Actinopterygii
Nutritional requirement: “Frogfishes mainly eat fishes and crustaceans (shrimps and crabs). They can swallow items of prey that are twice as large as them (see a video). Luring techniques vary depending on the surrounding the frogfish lives in”
Growth and development:  “About 8 to 12 hours prior to spawning, the female begins to fill up with eggs (40'000 to 180'000 eggs). parents leave the eggs, and not many survive.
Behavior: very well camouflaged with the coral around them in the deep sea. They are a Lie-and-wait type of sea creature.
Reproduction:  “ About 8 to 12 hours prior to spawning, the female begins to fill up with eggs (40'000 to 180'000 eggs). The eggs measure around half a millimeter. This proceeds at a rapid rate so that shortly before spawning she is so distended, it is hard for her to maintain her position on the bottom ”
Evolutionary origins: “Fish have a pair of fins behind their head called “pectoral fins”. A good way to remember these fins and where they are located is to think about “pecs” on humans — indeed, pectoral fins of fish are the evolutionary origins of our own shoulders, arms and hands. Most fish use pectoral fins for maneuvering or for propulsion, but in frogfish, pectoral fins are modified into arm-like limbs, which allow these little predators to crawl around and perch themselves among reef rocks, sponges and coral in the Pacific and Indian oceans”
Habitat: sheltered rock verrrryyyyy deep into the sea....66ft deep
