Week 7 – Artist – Nan Goldin & Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leinobitz’s work seems to be very portrait oriented surrounded by celebrities and or public figures. A majority of the portraits I’ve seen include these celebrities posing in front of an environmental background and the use of picture contrast/black and white pictures.
Nan Golding on the other hand takes a different approach to her photography. Golding appears to really delve into the intimate aspect of photography as some of her images include nude or sexual content. Some of these images also take on the aura of an 80′s image with the style of how they are presented.
Tumblr media
This photo above is my favorite from Annie Leibovitz. I really began to like it because DiCaprio is one of my favorite actors and I think this image speaks volumes. The use of a swan around his neck seems like an aura of peace and the black and white imagery adds another sense of emotion to the picture.
Tumblr media
Now for Nan Goldin, this is my favorite picture. It captures a very intimate moment between two people that I feel people can relate to. There is this feeling of being close to someone you love and sharing yourself in your most vulnerable state.
In my opinion the difference between Leibovitz’s manufactured portraits, and Goldin’s “documentary” portraits is that I do think that Goldin’s is more honest. It captures people in a very vulnerable state and for that matter feels more true than Leibovit’s “manufactured”ones. The question “if that matters” I feel doesn't come into play unless you’re asking or in search of something in particular.
Personally, I would hire Leibovitz for my portrait experience. The style is something I would be willing to try, and Goldin’s is something I would need time to get accustomed to. To share this very vulnerable moments I would need to be with someone I trust and could see myself with for the rest of my life. Until then, I’d rather have those moments be kept in private and not documented.

Environmental Portrait Photography - Research
Task1
Arnald Newman was an American environmental portrait photographer known for his work with artists and politicians. He is known as the godfather of environmental portraits and his work has been shown around the world.

Portrait of Arnals Newman
By far his most famous work is the portrait of the musician Igor Stravinsky (below). It shows a mastery of composition with Igor out on the left hand side and his piano dominating the photo.
Tumblr media
Other famous portraits that Newman did include the late president John F Kennedy outside the white house (below). In this image it looks like there is a reflector set up infront of the subject casting some subtle light on his face.

Annie Leibovits
Tumblr media
Annie Leibovits is known for her studio and traditional portraiture but has also done alot of environmental portraits. In 2011 she photographed the Profoto founder Conny Dufgran. The image below is Dufgran on his boat showing his interest in the sailing sport, it also uses a reflector and speed light to just brighten up his face as the sun at the time seems to be coming from the high left hand side.
Tumblr media
Profoto make photography equipment such as speed lights, tripods, cases and filters. the image (below) shows off Dufgran at his work and design table with blueprints and various prototype products surrounding him showing his engineering background.
Tumblr media
There seems to be alot of overlap with Street photography with Environmental portraiture. While with street photography (my own interest and hobby) the subject is often unaware of you taking their photos giving a natural look, when it comes to environmental portraitture there is a higher use of equipment such as a flash or reflector, the scene’s are more “setup” to show more about the individual person.
