The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964)
"I understand, sir, that you're not returning to Spain."
"That's correct."
"But the Armada will be reformed, sir. King Philip must try again, there's so much at stake."
"That sort of talk's for priests and women. And you."
#the devil ship pirates#hammer films#british cinema#1964#don sharp#jimmy sangster#christopher lee#andrew keir#john cairney#duncan lamont#suzan farmer#natasha pyne#barry warren#claire warren#michael ripper#ernest clark#philip latham#charles houston#harry locke#annette whiteley#barry linehan#peter howell#michael newport#Hammer's follow up to their previous pirate film‚ Pirates of Blood River‚ doesn't mess with the formula very much; once again Chris Lee is#a dastardly foreign pirate who invades Andrew Keir's isolated village‚ but this film at least sets a few brief scenes at sea (including an#impressively staged sea battle in the opening‚ shrouded in gunsmoke and cannon fire bc nearby workmen were building a motorway and you'd#have seen their trucks otherwise..). Hammer went for a U rating on this which means a noticeable dip in nastiness but they still push it to#the very limit. Chris is great fun but i miss the eyepatch and outrageous accent from PoBR; Warren is perhaps the most interesting figure#as the sole spaniard of noble heart and good conscience. also johnny briggs drowns in a marsh and eastenders dr legg is a baddie#you just don't get that kind of cross over any more these days! good swashbuckly fun but without the guts of hammer horror

Dream Movie
It's the Dream Show challenge again! This time, it's a movie! I hope you enjoy it!
The Marvelous Ms. Marbell
Quick Synopsis:
Sweet elderly Ms. Mary Marbell has quite the reputation for solving murders. But when an unpleasant business man with more money than sense, and more enemies than either, is found dead in his office, Ms. Marbell's investigation takes on some interesting complications.
Annette Badland - Ms. Mary Marbell, amateur detective extraordinaire. But does she have some secrets of her own?
Annie Murphy - Nicole Fletcher, Ms. Marbell's trusted aide. Ms. Marbell has the sharpest of minds, but she isn't exactly adept at wiggling through windows or creeping into closets. So when the investigation requires a bit more physical legwork, young Nikki is happy to oblige.
Elden Henson - Detective Jack Winchell, the investigating officer. He's never worked with Ms. Marbell before, and he's quite skeptical of her reputation. At least until he sees her results.
Michael Shanks - Darren Holt - Our victim. An entirely disagreeable fellow who any number of kind, simple folk would love to see dead. But who could have done it? And why duct tape?
Jeff Goldblum - Aaron Jacobson - One of many potential suspects, but the one with the most recognizable face. He lost a lot of money due to one of Darren Holt's shady business deals. He also made his fortune in hardware, particularly duct tape. Could he perhaps be the murderer?
Sonequa Martin-Green - Tara Mars - An American blogger and investigator who has teamed up with a like-minded British counterpart. Ms. Marbell once proved her father guilty of murder, but Tara still has questions.
John Boyega - Stephen Smith - A British blogger and investigator. He's been following Ms. Marbell's exploits for years, and he thinks he's started noticing a few concerning patterns.
--
Full Synopsis:
Businessman Darren Holt has been murdered and Ms. Marbell is on the case. Despite the skepticism of her new "partner", Detective Winchell, Ms. Marbell thorough and gentle examination of witnesses and evidence soon bring results, and Aaron Jacobson is arrested for the crime.
But that's when Tara Mars and Stephen Smith show up, with a lot of questions. While Ms. Marbell has been investigating murders, they've been investigating Ms. Marbell and they've come up with one heck of an alternate theory for the crimes.
Is Ms. Marbell simply a brilliant, yet underestimated, amateur detective? Or is SHE the murderer, carefully choosing the most unlikable, distasteful victims so that she can send her real targets to prison instead?
Complicating the investigation is the discovery that Stephen Smith and Nicole Fletcher had once been very close friends in their shared Ms. Marbell fandom.
Ultimately, the murderer is revealed to be Nicole Fletcher. She'd long admired Ms. Marbell, and as the elderly sleuth's reputation began to fade, she'd taken it upon herself to provide new cases. She's imprisoned, Aaron Jacobson is set free, and a devastated Ms. Marbell returns to her sad, empty home.
In the coda, Ms. Marbell is visited by her long estranged grandson, Philip (as played by Arthur Darvill). As they enjoy the fresh air, she notices a very angry fellow shouting at the women on the street. "That one next," she tells her grandson, who nods solemnly as they continue their pleasant walk.

THE GHOST IN THE INVISIBLE BIKINI (1966) – Episode 187 – Decades of Horror: The Classic Era
“I’m steaming. I’m steaming. I’m… I’m so exaggerated! I’m mad at that princess. The only girl I ever loved and now she and them street slobs are going to steal a million clams from them folks and they didn’t even invite me. ” Eric von Zipper has a way with words, doesn’t he? Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Jeff Mohr, and guest Dirk Rogers – as they check out one of the last of AIP’s beach party movies, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966).

The Grue-Crew and guest host Dirk Rogers take a trip to the beach with one of the last of the Beach Party movies. Wait, what? There’s no beach? No ocean? No surfing? And AIP disliked the product so much that they added Boris Karloff and the whole ghost-in-the-invisible-bikini schtick after the fact?
Well, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966) makes for a nice title. Let’s face it. It’s a bad movie. It’s even a dumb movie. But it can be a fun movie, especially if you love the lame, teen music numbers inserted throughout the film as much as the Grue-Crew do. And even if you despise the music (yeah, the Grue-Crew didn’t like it either – except Doc, of course), you can have fun with this flick.
With Deborah Walley and Tommy Kirk (subbing for Annette and Frankie), Basil Rathbone, Patsy Kelly, Harvey Lembeck (Eric von Zipper!), Jesse White, and Nancy Sinatra, there’s always something to watch. Think “the Three Stooges in an old dark house.”
At the time of this writing, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966) is available to stream from MGM+, Amazon Prime, and several PPV options.

Check out the Red/Blue Ships List here X
Continuation of my attempt to create a tierlist for every color scheme, here is the Orange/Black tierlist, which also includes Orange/Purple and Orange/Blue pairings due to the amount of overlap I was seeing in the color schemes. I was a lot more lenient here than the Red/Blue one on what counts as I figured there would be less, though I ended up with a lot more than I thought.
I don't know all the pairings here personally and just tried to include all I could find - If I left any of your favorites out let me know and I can retroactively add them (This goes for the other lists too).

thank you for the tag @edgeworth-s !!
LAST SONG: technically it's Le duc sous l'eau, but that's because it's the last thing I remember from my go the fuck to sleep playlist last night. The real answer is Wake Me When It's Over by The Cranberries
FAVORITE COLOR: Really in to various reds and oranges rn
LAST MOVIE/TV SHOW: movie - American Fiction, TV - Twin Peaks (thank u alan wake for reminding me how good that show is lol)
SWEET/SAVORY/SPICY: uhhhh savory probably? but I like spice here and there
LAST THING GOOGLED: "Moby Dick word count"
CURRENT OBSESSION: *shadow man voice* Alan Wake. but also Blorbos From My Brain (thinking a lot about that Rich and Caroline and Emily thing, but to little effect on paper lol)
LAST BOOK: American Pastoral by Philip Roth - no relation to American Fiction the film, but I do see some really interesting structural similarities between them. I haven't read Erasure, which American Fiction is based on, so thats conjecture to some extent since the film cant be exactly 1:1, but they both are about authors working on books and both use a sort of meta-narrative that includes the entire book the author is writing? idk I'll have to read Erasure and get back to y'all lol
LAST FIC: Most recent chapter of Little Moments of Self Indulgence! (felix and annette von fire emblem, of course) let them kisssssssss
LOOKING FORWARD TO: d&d tonight lol
okay I get nervous trying to tag people so anyone who wants to participate definitely should. Especially new mutuals from the last month or so! (and tag me so I can read them lol)

The Crown Prince and Princess of Eastland's Busy Schedule Shines Through in Yesterday's Appearances
The Crown Prince and Princess in front of a statue on the island of Tartosa
It goes without saying that having a life filled with endless work will inevitably mean working endlessly, but do we truly know how much? The Cambridges' royal guard had this to say about their schedules after questions were raised about the practicality of Princess Nora doing so much while pregnant, after having suffered health complications that brought her to the hospital.
Her trips yesterday included a cheerleading event, a royal court meeting, and a talent show.
The Crown Princess at her former high school's cheerleading event. The Princess used to be on the cheerleading team as vice captain.
Princess Nora sits with LIW Annette Almin and RA Peter Cash to sent letters of correspondence and discuss Simlandovian finances.
Eastland's PM Edward Ulley was present to discuss the finances of Eastland, and to educate Mr. Cash on the monetary standings of the country.
"Every morning, I wake up at 3 to prepare breakfast, then the two wake up at 5 and eat at 5:30. They plan on eating as a family at 6 when they have their child, however, and to work in the quarters during the evenings.
"Then, Princess Nora goes into her working quarters to write letters of correspondence. Prince Frederick does the same, however, he educates himself on Simlandovian history with the help of Queen Catherine's and King Philip's books. Princess Nora already read about Eastland, so she doesn't need this.
"At 8, they go to a regularly held event. On Saturdays, this is a religious service, and on any other day, it can be a stroll around the royal gardens, a tea visit, or a derby show. When they get back, they relax, have lunch, and go on their trips. When their trips are done, I prepare dinner while the Princess reads letters sent, the Prince discussing things with her, and then the Princess would have an early morning meeting with her court the next day to send letters out.
"We eat at 6, they plan to let their children learn and play until 8, and then everybody goes to bed at 9."
"I don't know, I think being overworked will cause her more problems," one reader commented.
"Do you think she made the schedule, or do you think it's been placed on her? I don't remember the Hattenburghs going on this many trips," another said.
"At least it ain't me. Good for them, though, working hard," a third comment read.
"Today, their day included a 5am breakfast, 6am work, 8am derby race, 11am cheerleading event, royal court meeting from 1-3, and a talent showcase at 4pm. They returned home at 5:30, dinner at 6, and then worked and studied until 9pm."

New Scotland Yard: Hard Contract (1.5, LWT, 1972)
"I was just wondering what it was like to kill somebody."
"Well, that's a nice thought to start the day, innit?"
"In all my stint in the army, I never did. Not like -"
"Not like me."
"Yeah, well, you bagged a few terrorists in your time, didn't you? I was just wondering..."
"What it was like?"
"Yeah."
"Well, it... it was like... like nothing. You just sit on a roof and wait. For movement. The sun on a rifle. Just a flash, a glint. The first bullet gets you - or gets them, it's as simple as that."
"No involvement?"
"None."

Woodvine takes on a case belonging to a hospitalised#colleague‚ also inheriting the man's number two (a typically gruff but likeable Windsor Davies). it's a fairly routine case involving#a contract killer (Pat O'Connell‚ the year before he found household recognition in The Brothers‚ and sporting the same slightly shaky#northern accent he had in his Saint appearance a few years prior). there's the hints of something larger at play; the shadowy figure who's#actually paying for the killings goes unidentified and has possible links to people in high office‚ the seeds of conspiracy that i very#much hope will be returned to (but i honestly don't know yet if this is the type of show to keep up with such threads or just dangle and#abandon). a fairly solid ep but it does fail to interrogate the potential of how an ex soldier back from service in Northern Ireland falls#into mercenary work and killing for profit.. too touchy an idea in 72 perhaps#Woodvine gets a few lighter moments too; perhaps it's being away from Carlisle?? they are an odd couple

"Lift" (2001) is an independent drama written and directed by DeMane Davis and Khari Streeter. The film stars Kerry Washington, Lonette McKee, Eugene Byrd, and Barbara Montgomery. The film appeared at the Sundance Film Festival 2001 but never earned a theatrical release. Instead, Showtime aired the movie until they released it on DVD.
The late 90s and early 2000s saw an explosion of black films, but many didn't receive theatrical treatment. However, several were well-put-together movies that deserve a second run. "Lift" is a decent movie and an excellent role for Washington before her superstardom. Also, the film is a nostalgic reminder of what the early 2000s looked like.

E15: "459"
This is an interesting episode to watch because it's the introduction of Carol Danvers to the EMHU. And it's different from the comics canon (which is super complicated and involves a Kree wishing machine) but also pretty different from the MCU origin in Captain Marvel.
Here Carol is introduced as Janet's friend. I don't know how they met but I am DYING to know. Jan is a socialite in this series and Carol is a major in the military. I guess they could've bumped into each other in NYC. Is Carol the person she complains about Hank to? I bet she is.
Because Carol immediately burns Hank by saying hot hot Tony (and suggesting he'd be a good match for Jan). But actually Carol needs Hank's help with something.
Carol introduces the Ant-man and Wasp to "Dr. Philip Lawson." This is an odd change because Mar-vell, the Kree hero who was the first Captain Marvel went by the human alias Walter Lawson in the comics. It was changed to Wendy Lawson (Annette Benning) in the film Captain Marvel. Philip Lawson is less often used (I associate Philip with the variant Mahr-vehl from the Ultimates universe/1610). But I guess none of these human names are his real name.
The "twist" to make Mar-vell a female character in Captain Marvel was new for the MCU. (Although I don't know why we are imposing a gender binary on non-human races.)
Whatever gender Mar-vell is, Jan thinks they are hot. Hank is annoyed.
Anyway, something alien crashes to Earth. Both Carol and Jan want to fight whatever it is. Like girls do. There is some fighting in the woods.
It's a giant robot (the titular "459"). Hank wants to talk to it or whatever and normally I would not roll my eyes at such a thing. But it's clearly an instrument of war, and it's shooting lasers at his girlfriend, so like, catch up, genius.
You guys aren't going to believe this, but Lawson turns out to be an alien. I know, shocking. He and Carol get hit by some kind of beam from the robot (she was protecting him) and he turns back to his regular Kree form. He announces himself as Mahr-vehl. Closed captioning confirms the spelling. So he is the Ultimates version. Weird.
They bring Carol to the hospital and call the other Avengers. Mahr-vehl explains himself. This is the first name drop of the Kree-Skrull war which isn't actually relevant until next season, because this robot was sent by the Kree. To destroy Earth. Why didn't you tell them humans already had dibs on this planet, Mahr? Huh? Not a very good scout.
He explains the if the robot encounters resistance, it just blows up the entire planet. Jan actually says, "Hulk, smash him." And I'm kind of on her side here. But Hank stops the smashing (killjoy).
Marvel (I'm not typing all the dumb letters anymore) says he's just here to study humanity and he keeps lookin' at Carol in her bed. It's implied he loves Carol so much he decides humanity should be saved. I am creeped out by this.
He's been lying to her for three years studying Carol? If he cares about her so much maybe he should have a conversation with her? Maybe "psst, I'm an alien?" I think he's a weird, gross creeper and want him smashed.
Hank and Marvel are bros now, I guess. The Avengers (Hank, Jan, Hulk, Thor and Tony) plus Marvel go fight the robot/bomb.
Marvel is wearing a look more like his Ultimates gear (Kree war suit with helmet). He's not the traditional blond-haired, red spandex Captain Marvel. He also has a green glow around him and keeps making constructs out of his nanotech. It reminds me a lot of how Green Lantern looks in cartoons. I can't unsee it.
Jan and Hank fight and also get hit by explosives. Hank tries to protect Jan and takes a blast. He says "I love..." but then urges her to stop the bomb. If you had more words you could've finished that sentence, my dude. You just didn't want to.
There is a cool sequence where Jan flies at the robot, and gets inside but she doesn't actually get to save the day. (Even though getting very small would be a useful power for diffusing a bomb, I think.) Out of nowhere there is a giant floating head of Yon-rogg that Marvel talks to. This is also weird and unnecessary setting up of intra-Kree fighting that the show will never get to since it was cancelled after its second season.
So Marvel takes the bomb and flies into space with it, but he ices up which is weird because he should be able to space travel. Like, he's from another planet. Tony saves him (Tony can totally fly into space, guys, but the alien cant?) And Thor manages to throw the bomb far enough away from Earth when it explodes. That was a shitty plan, Marv.
Jan and Marvel make up before he teleports out of there, a power I did not know he had. Hank fails again to say "I love you" to Jan. And the episode ends with a glowing Carol being able to fly.
But none of this will matter until next season, when there is more space stuff and Carol joins the team. I think this was a way to say "there are going to be more than one lady Avenger!!" without, you know, actually having more than one lady Avenger on the team. However, with so much the setup already this season, I feel like this episode would've been better next season.
So that's the story of how Carol Danvers got superpowers and ditched her stalker in one go.
Rating: Eh, if you're interested.

Yeah, I have some smaller and bigger goals. I'd like to finish a writing project (either the novel I've been working on or the treatment for the TV show I started,) but I'd also like to find a full-time job and a place to live with a roommate, but that one's gonna require a little more time.
As an American...this year ended on a pretty sour note, and as you can imagine, I'm pretty worried about the next four years. But I'm gonna try and get through it with as much optimism as possible!
I hope you do find a librarian job! I still think that's such a cool job to have. Speaking of books, I would say nonfiction and biographies are my favorites to read...what are some of your favorite books about music? Have you read Pete's book Who I Am?
Good luck with finding a full-time job and with finding a place to live - I know it's more difficult now than ever, but maybe you'll be lucky!
Maybe it won't be that bad, you stay positive there and don't let the negative thoughts consume you. This is the worst thing that could happen now.
Thanks, I'll try my best, because I was at a job practice in two libraries and I loved what I did. Any favourite books from non-fiction and biographies you have in mind?
My favourite books about music are the ones I read so far so these would be - in no particular order:
The Beatles Biography by Hunter Davies - it was a nice read, learned a lot about this bunch from Liverpool. I love how the author shitted on Philip Norman, it was so real and I approve. I tried to read Lennon's biography by Norman, but God damn, is his narration annoying!
Jim Morrison. The Lizard King by Jerry Hopkins - biography written by a fan to a fan, what can you want more? It was well written, showing the good side of Jim despite the bad side that he had. The neatest fact about this book were the interviews at the end of it. I think one or two of them were done by Hopkins himself, I'm not sure now.
Dear Boy. The Life of Keith Moon by Tony Fletcher - now this was a fun and difficult read at the same time. The two books above were at least translated to Polish, this one I got by a pure luck, used copy 40 zloties so $9,85, this was a fucking bargain (originally I would have to pay 120 zloties so $29,55 for a new copy because it's not translated). Again, book written by a fan for a fan and honestly I think it's the best way any biography can be written. It portrayed Keith's life very well, I learned a lot about him and started loving him even more. I did a post when I've finished reading it, you can find it here if you're interested (if you're wondering who I talk about in the first paragraph, I got an anon hate on the 23rd of August). There's also a very neat closing chapter where the author shows the moment when he met Keith in person. This was so sweet!
As for next books I want to read there are two: John Bonham: The Powerhouse Behind Led Zeppelin by Mick Bonham and The Last Four Years: A Rock Noir Romance by Annette Walter-Lax. And guess what? They are not translated so either I get extremely lucky or I'll spend an insane amount of money on them.
If it comes to Pete's book "Who I Am" this is probably the only book about The Who translated to Polish, but I do not think I'm such a big fan of Pete to read it. I'm happy it got translated, but from what my bestie said it's completely focused on him - as an autobiography should be - so I think I'll pass this one.
Did you read it?
