Salem was born in a town on the border of France and Germany to a wealthy family with a dark and secretive history; a family of witches. At the tender age of six when it became clear that Salem had not only inherited these gifts but that he also was hard-pressed to limit himself with them, the family decided their only option was to head west toward the new world. Salem grew up privileged, but never happy, never allowed to practice his craft except in secret; but he practiced whenever he could. He poured through literature and lore, absorbing as much knowledge as he could in secret -- until the day he was caught. Living in a high class lifestyle in New York, Salem’s mother employed a number of staff, one of whom was a young girl that caught him practicing magic one day in his room. But instead of being angry he saw the curiosity in her eyes and decided to share himself with her. They fell in love and married in secret; but when his mother found out she had the girl sent away to Salem, Massachusetts. She thought the idea was amusing, and that Salem would be hesitant to try and find her.

After 6 years looking for the woman he loved, Salem finally found her; but he had underestimated his mother’s pettiness. Lorraine had no memory of him, and the spark of curiosity in her eyes had been replaced by a deep distrust and fear for the unknown. Salem was devastated, but stubbornly woo’d her to try and regain any of the love she held for him, and once again Salem had to hide his magic. They had a daughter together, and Salem was quick to realize she had inherited his gifts, but he was unable to hide it from his wife for long. She went insane with grief and horror, attempting to drown herself and their child; and Salem was left a widower and a father to a six year old girl. The townspeople declared that Lorraine’s death was caused by witchcraft, and though he bites his tongue and goes along with their accusations, Salem has finally stopped trying to suppress who he is. He’d really rather not be hung or burned at the stake, but he has quite a few exit strategies if the need arises.

Stubborn, determined, obstinate and still grieving for his wife, Salem’s only priority is to protect his daughter from the fear sweeping through their small town. He will betray others if necessary, because that’s the way he was raised: all for one and one for one. To the rest of the town he’s just a wealthy, newly widowed man. He uses his high status to his advantage, but he has to be very careful about pissing off the wrong people or else that could all go away very quickly.

HISTORY //

Salem grew up an only child, dismissed by his mother and abandoned by his father - a puritan wizard whose only role in his life was to send him to Durmstrang. He was born in America at the start of the Great Depression, lived in New York with his mother, in LUXURY and guiltlessness, untouched by the muggle poverty and uncaring of the world below her. She lived on champagne, preferring her friends and parties to being a mother of any kind. His mother didn’t want him attending one of the American wizarding schools, as they held no class for her -- she herself had attended Hogwarts, his father Baubaxtons. But neither school was the right fit for their son in their eyes. Salem had grown up a troublemaker, and the strict, almost militant atmosphere of Durmstrang appealed to his father’s view of how he SHOULD be shaped.

Salem did not have many friends growing up in Durmstrang, there was a language barrier that prevented him from fitting in; but his elitist attitude and charisma drew people to him regardless. He’s INVENTIVE and PATIENT, but he will jump on opportunities when they present to him. But his circle was small, and he was more often than not bullied, but Salem doesn’t take that lying down which resulted in duels in the corridors. His father didn’t keep in touch during his school years, and with nowhere else for him to go his mother was forced to take him in during school breaks; though he was often left without a way to get home, and would spend the time until she remembered him WANDERING the different wizarding ports.

It was this exposure to different cultures that SPARKED his interest in uniting the entirety of the wizarding world, at least that’s how it started out. Straight out of school Salem went back to New York, but after spending the better part of two decades in the dark and cold, the bright city only irritated him. A year of quick study under Nicholas Flamel he decided to RETURN to Durmstrang as a teacher, under the guise of the Alchemy Professor -- but it was his way of keeping busy while he reached out to his old school friends, and sought out ways to build his army. He influenced his students to go after whatever they wanted by WHATEVER means necessary, creating chaos in the wake of his departure from the school.

Salem spent the next FIFTY years in Azkaban, never holding onto hope and never remembering the good times in his life. What good times? Instead, he came to the slow realization that he was alone in the world and he always had been. He was patient, as he had been his ENTIRE life, watching the infestation of dementor’s on the island turn men to insanity -- he watched the rise and fall of Voldemort, the parade of Death Eater’s, the sorrow and the madness rise and fall and RISE once more. And then, the dementor’s were gone; a complete upheaval of the hierarchy that Salem watched. He waited, and watched, for the perfect moment. And the perfect moment came to him in the form of his release from prison. He might not have been as INFAMOUS as the Dark Lord, but the Ministry doesn’t forget someone who tries to take over the world.

He was offered a sort of….DEAL. A slow probation, that after leaving Azkaban he was to be kept under careful watch. Durmstrang took him back, but on the condition that he was to stay in his animagus form. Salem Saberhagen was released from Azkaban in 1999, and released from the body of a cat FIFTEEN years later. The Ministry had another stipulation, that he could go back to teaching, but his area of focus would be on what he had wanted so badly to conquer: the very first Muggle Studies class offered at Durmstrang.
