Anna Maria Island - Voted 6th Happiest Seaside Town in U.S.
Guests of Dans Florida Condos, have asked a favor of me throughout the years: “Help keep our little island paradise a secret”.  Nestled on Florida’s Southwest Gulf coast just south of Clearwater and north of Sarasota, Anna Maria Island is the perfect vacation spot for a quiet Old-Time Florida holiday.
The cat may be out of the bag, especially now since Coastal Living Magazine has listed Anna Maria Island as the 6th happiest seaside town in the United States.
[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/t5_XKDp0MOU”]
**Along with beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants and nifty shops, Anna Maria residents might just have another reason to smile.
On June 12, Coastal Living magazine released its 2018 rankings for the 10 happiest seaside towns in the United States, placing the city of Anna Maria at No. 6.
The 10 finalists were nominated on social media and deemed finalists by the magazine. The order of cities in the final ranking was based on popular vote on the magazine’s social media.
Coastal Living 6th Happiest Seaside Towns – TRACEY MINKIN
It is worth noting the final rankings were based on an online popular vote, with Anna Maria having the second smallest population of the 10 finalists.
Factors considered in the ranking were the percentage of clear and sunny days, wellness index, crime rate, standard of living, the financial well-being of locals and “coastal vibe,” among other criteria.
Rod & Reel Pier – Anna Maria Island, Florida
In naming the finalists, Coastal Living describes Anna Maria as “an old-Florida dream of an island town, with a sweet little main street, community gardens and streets lined with candy-colored cottages.”
“We’re just very proud that we’ve been nominated and recognized for being a happy city,” Mayor Dan Murphy said June 11 in a phone interview. “I’ve always felt that our residents are very happy.
“It kind of makes you happy to even visit our city, I think.”
“Tra-la-la,” Murphy emailed to The Islander.
No. 1 underrated beach town
Meanwhile, the three cities on Anna Maria Island were collectively ranked No. 1 in a June 15 Huffington Post story.
Writer Jess Bolluyt states: “Whether you love the ocean or prefer to spend your beach days at the lake, there are plenty of beaches and beach towns to explore across America. While some have gotten incredibly popular, others remain underrated, especially the most affordable ones.”
The Huffington Post reports that Trip Advisor users named Anna Maria Island as one of the most underrated beach towns in the United States. “This 7-mile-long island, located just across from St. Petersburg, retains its ‘Old Florida’ feel. The island feels laid-back and less developed than the surrounding area.”
Anna Maria Island is No. 1 on the list of beach towns in the post to “add to your bucket list.”
If you have a bucket list.

Anna Maria City Pier - Lifeblood of AMI Continued Progress
Tumblr media
Guests who visit Dan’s Florida Condos, which are located on Anna Maria Island, Florida are getting very excited about the return of the Anna Maria Island City Pier!  The pier is not only one of islands most visited tourist attractions, but is often frequented by local fisherman due to its excellent access to the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay waters.
The Anna Maria City Pier was originally built in 1911 but had to be closed in 2017 after enduring structural damage from Hurricane Irma. Anna Maria Island is buzzing with excitement, as the reconstruction of the 776-foot-long historic pier is showing amazing progress!
Tumblr media
Anna Maria City Pier Progress
So far, all of the pilings have been driven into the bed of the Gulf of Mexico, forming the T-formation of the future pier walkway.  In early May 2019, bolts were installed on top of the pilings which will later be filled with caps of concrete.  Once the concrete is firmly in place, the caps will then support wood bents and beams which will ultimately support the walkway decking.
As far as the schedule of the project, the walkway should be completed by the end of August 2019.  The city, in parallel is running a bidding process with various construction firms for the building of the restaurant and bait shop.  The building configuration will be similar to the original design, which will be placed at the T-end of the pier.
One of the biggest concerns with not only local businesses but thousands of excited visitors, is ensuring the project is delivered on time.  The current contractor had a few delays as there were some issues removing concrete from the old pilings that supported the original bridge.
Tumblr media
Anna Maria City Pier Progress
This should not make a significant dent in the schedule.  The city however is ensuring that any future contracts have strict language to motivate prompt delivery and, in some cases, pose up to a $495 daily fine for finishing past target dates.  The overall timeline completing the building which will house the restaurant and bait shop is 200 days once work commences.

[Duplicated:75760] Red Tide Prevention with Clams, in action on Anna Maria Island
Returning and new guests of Dans Florida Condos will be interested in recent activities occurring on Anna Maria Island, FL.  First off, AMI has been clear of all traces of Red Tide for months now.  In addition, local restaurant owners, nonprofit organizations, and environmental agencies are putting preventative measures to action, to help ensure the Bradenton Beach coast is not affected as it was in the late summer/fall months of 2018 from red tide.
Florida red tide, or Karenia brevis, is a type of microalgae that emits a neurotoxin when it blooms. Deadly to marine life, red tide also can make shellfish unfit to eat and can cause respiratory irritation in people.
The agency who is leading the charge is the Bradenton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency.  In March 2019, they released the first 30,000 clams into the Sarasota Bay, just off Bridge Street Pier on Bradenton Beach, FL.  This is the first segment of the preventative clam project, which in total will be distributing over 200,000 live clams into the salt water shores of our little piece of paradise.
The clams release is being monitored closely by other state and government agencies and its hoped to serve as a model for other coastal communities throughout Florida.  The clams which are composed of mostly carbon, not only clean the water but also promote seagrass growth.  This growth creates a natural buffer to sea wildlife when powerful storms visit the beaches.
youtube
The dozens of volunteers looked closely at the types of clams to purchase for the project.  They found that smaller clams, while more desirable and marketable in the seafood businesses, came with drawbacks.  Smaller clams are very prone to predators.  They are small (and delicious not only to humans) so everything within their surroundings wants to eat them.  Larger clams with thick carbon shells proved to be almost immune to surrounding predators and can live up to 35 years within the warm waters off of Anna Maria Island.
The project will not only drastically reduce chances of a return of the “once in a generation” red tide event of 2018, but also promote awareness and momentum in supporting a clean water environment throughout Anna Maria Island, FL.
Boat owners who are interested in the clam project can volunteer by calling the Sand Bar Restaurant 941-778-0444.
Latest Red Tide Report on AMI
March 2019 kicked off the spring/summer booking season.  Thousands of travelers typically start planning their vacations now that school schedules for children and other family plans are solidified.  Coincidentally, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reported that no red tide was predicted in Manatee County waters through mid-March.
With no fish kills or respiratory issues reported by the NOAA in months and the addition to the Clam project to fight red tide, eager vacationers can now start booking their spring/summer vacations with a better sense of confidence that their vacations will not be impacted as many were last year.

Anna Maria Islands Cortez Beach, A Much-Welcomed Upgrade
Tumblr media
Travelers from around the world flock to the sugar sand beaches of Anna Maria Island for sun, and fun.  Guests of Dans Florida Condos (www.dansfloridacondos.com) situated right in the middle of the action on Anna Maria Island, benefit by not only updated vacation rentals and the beautiful grounds of the Runaway Bay community, but also exclusive access to private beach access of the Gulf of Mexico.
While a private beach is the envy of many, some families enjoy the energy and activity of one of the many public beaches that Anna Maria has to offer.  Cortez Beach has been a main attraction for not only travelers, but also local Floridians for what seems forever.  This lovely island attraction will soon be getting Lifeguard Towers to aid in safety awareness and water accident prevention of the beaches.
Tumblr media
Similar Lifeguard Towers to be in service in early Summer 2019
In total, there will be 3 new lifeguard stands like the one pictured above, staffed by six new lifeguards.  The towers will be positioned within proximity to three of the newly completed erosion control structures and will be operated 365 days a year.  These structures and the water around them are popular among surfers, but also serve as a walkway extending about 75 yards into the water which provide great views of the beach and fishing enthusiasts.
The upgrades won’t stop at Cortez Beach.  The County of Manatee, where Anna Maria Island and Dans Florida Condos are located will also be rebuilding the rest of the public beach lifeguard stands throughout Anna Maria Island.  Some of the stands are nearly 30 years old and experienced termite issues which fueled the need to bring them up to date.  In addition, the stands are “lifeguard-friendly” meaning their design helps prevent glare and increased air-flow with solar-powered exhaust fans.
Cortez Beach History:
The waterfront which is now known as Cortez beach, was originally named Hunters Point in the 1880s.  It was utilized as one of the main fishing villages within the city of Bradenton Beach.  Today much of the landscape remains as it was in these early years of habitation on Bradenton Beach.  You will find a barrier of sand dunes with sea grass, palm trees and other local vegetation blocking the parking lot from the beach views.
Location:
Location: Cortez Beach is located just off Cortez Road.  This 2000 feet (over 6.5 football fields long) stretch of waterfront boasts some of the purest sugar sand beaches and crystal-clear waters in the world. You won’t find any high-rise buildings here, and there is more than ample parking for even the busiest of holiday beach traffic.
Eats:
There aren’t any restaurants or food stands on Cortez beach, however if you take a walk down the shore you will arrive at Coquina Beach.  Here you will discover a beachside restaurant which offers brunch and lunch options.  Showers, water fountains, changing stations, grills and picnic benches can also be utilized here before returning to Cortez Beach.
Parking:
Free, yes, I said free!  Parking is free along Gulf Drive south anywhere between 5th Street to 13th street.  You’ll find entrances to the parking on the west side of the street along the beach.
Hours of coverage:
Cortez Beach will adopt the same hours as Coquina Beach and Manatee Public Beach: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Labor Day through Memorial Day and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day.

In total, there will be 3 new lifeguard, staffed by six new lifeguards.

Anna Maria Island Heritage Festival and Settler's Market
Tumblr media
Snowbird and summertime travelers from all over the world visit Anna Maria Island, Florida for sunshine,  beach time, and endless family activities.  Guests who visit and stay at Dans Florida Condos (www.dansfloridacondos.com) often are surprised by the deep history and unique welcoming cultural events that island has to offer as well.
This year’s annual Anna Maria Island Heritage Festival and Settler’s Market, will take place on Saturday March 2nd, 2019.  Anna Maria Island Historical Society represents, preserves and houses the history and historical records and items of all three cities that make up Anna Maria Island. Heritage Day makes island history come alive by giving visitors an opportunity to see how the settler’s lived in the early days of the island and to experience, first-hand, many of the collectibles from its past. The museum will be open as will the Belle Haven Cottage and of course the famous City Jail and the historic park which was recently expanded with picnic tables for seating on the water under a shady canopy of trees.
AMIHS Museum and Historical Park, 402 Pine Ave., Anna Maria, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This annual event gives visitors an opportunity to watch local craftsmen demonstrating arts and crafts as practiced by early island settlers. In addition, there will be a Settlers Market with local produce, herbs and settler’s bread baked by local volunteers and a collectibles tent with items for sale. The museum, Belle Haven Cottage and the surrounding native plant garden will be open for tours. Music, food and games are also part of this annual event. Free admission.
A few island favorites will be on hand including:
AMI String Band: https://www.facebook.com/AnnaMariaIslandPrivateers
AMI Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring AMITW: https://www.facebook.com/IslandTurtleWatch
Tumblr media
Volunteers escort children through one of the main attractions, the Historic Anna Maria City Jail
Many local craftspeople also were on hand, helping visitors take a step back in time as they toured the museum’s grounds. Experts in everything from sustainably collecting local honey to bonnet making, spinning, quilting and candle making gave demonstrations in their craft, answered questions and offered their wares for sale.
Visitors were invited to take a piece of history with them as they departed with items ranging from historical books by local authors to antique implements and signs from long ago Island landmarks."
