I know I’m such a broken record about this but hong kong cinema and the acting class in GENERAL has taken such a nose dive since the early 2000s. many of the actors that made a name for themselves now were outstanding as youngsters and I just don’t see that in this generation. It also has to do with the fact that not a lot of movies offer any sort of role that would work well towards an aspiring actors resume... this is the example of examples, but andy lau back when he played 刀仔 in god of gamblers? that was the role of the century. there was so much versatility in actors back then who are 40-50 now mainly because movies coming out were good, and they had the opportunity to really act in a variety of roles that could propel them to stardom. It also takes years and years to brew an organic actor with experience too like nick cheung used to be soooo fucking cheap, he’d do the worst most unpleasant roles and it took him dozens of movies and tens of years to finally reach a point in which he was recognized for his acting and dedication to film. I really don’t see a second sean lau, ekin cheng, andy lau, tony leung, karen mok, miriam yeung, or even kara wai in this generation now. In terms of young actors I would say my favorites are still babyjohn choi, carlos chan and anjaylia chan... everyone else is just like present.

there is a certain kind of affection I feel for hong kong actors and actresses, mainly because I grew up watching them. I grew up watching a lot of hong kong movies and entertainment which is why I’m stupid critical over some of them. I also feel like this generation of actors really have not been as outstanding as I hoped. during award shows directors often say “keep hong kong cinema alive”, “keep supporting hong kong cinema” and? bitch.... I would if you guys made good movies again? I can’t remember a young or up and coming actor I’ve felt like would even have potential to become a bigger star in the future. couple that comes to mind is probably winki lai, carlos chan or even anjaylia chan, but their appearances in film are pretty sporadic except for carlos. he’s really the only male actor I feel like can take on bigger roles next to babyjohn, but again... they’re not incredibly young and the amount of good movies that get produced in hong kong are like close to zero nowadays
