Trump may be about to sign the death sentence of the National Institute of Health, and, by extension, the Office of Lab Animal Welfare.

He gutted research animal protections.

Any vertebrate that isn't a mammal will have no rights.

Neither will mice or rats.

If NIH grants are stopped, researchers can't pay anyone. They can't perform research. They can't pay for veterinary services.

They won't be required to provide veterinary services.

The only medical research that will happen will be self funded by big pharma, and they can torture the animals and skew all the lab results that they want.

Just like Musk did to the primates in his neuralink research.

I don't know what's going to happen to me or anyone else at the university where I work. My job is to make sure the animals are treated humanely and to provide veterinary care. I'm especially scared about what's going to happen to those research animals if veterinary staff gets laid off. The USDA only covers mammals, and it doesn't even cover all of them. Every rat I've ever made a tiny paper gift box full of marshmallows for, every mouse I've ever watched grow up, every rodent I've ever separated from an aggressive dominant brother and then treated their tiny wounds, they have no protections if NIH goes down. Decades of research into humane handling, euthanasia, and animal behavior will be tossed aside and wasted.

Please, do everything you can. Protest. Contact your representatives. Anything you can do. Do it for science, for medicine, for people's lives, for people's jobs, and for the animals.

DAS is regularly over-capacity around 130% or so from what I see on their social media. They partner with other rescue programs to send animals to areas in the country that have less of an overpopulation problem.

“Kill shelters” are the shelters you need to donate to.

“But shrimp!! Kill shelters are evil!!”

No, shut up, listen to me for a second.

“Kill shelter” is a colloquial term used primarily for Town/City (aka municipal) shelters that rely on incredibly limited government grant funding to operate.

These shelters, by the very nature of their existence, DO NOT HAVE the funds to operate like private rescues do.

On top of this, they’re also *legally required* to take in ANY animal that comes to them. Even if they’re full. Or they’ll lose all of their funding.

This is what leads them to needing to euthanize for space. Is euthanizing for space sad? Yes. But due to the current crisis, it’s also NECESSARY.

These shelters are constantly overfull. They’re STRUGGLING. They don’t have the funds to operate properly. And yet these municipal, government funded, struggling shelters are the same ones that are most likely to be providing care for owned animals in the community

Municipal (“kill”) shelters are the ones hosting low cost spay and neuter clinics. They’re the ones discounting vaccination appointments and microchipping. They’re the ones that have pet food banks so struggling pet owners can feed their pets that week.

These shelters are not evil. They’re doing the absolute best they can with the bare minimum funding they get.

These people are incredibly resourceful and care very deeply about the animals in their care. It breaks their heart every time they have to euthanize an animal that couldn’t get adopted.

These underfunded shelters need your money significantly more than that fancy private rescue you see on TikTok or instagram that has a beautiful facility and has never had to euthanize an animal ever.

Support your local shelters and they will give back to the community thousand fold.

Sincerely, an animal welfare student who’s tired of seeing the hardest working professionals shat on because of circumstances they can’t control.

What Is Wrong With Themed Reality!?

Themed Reality is an….. odd bunch. They are essentially a blog run by a couple animal advocates, focusing in particular on marine mammals.

Joe Kleiman (sp?) to my knowledge is the primary founder/writer for the blog. He has some professional experience in animal husbandry from many years ago, but of late has primarily been a journalist following the many inner workings of the theme park industry— again, marine parks in particular.

From what I have observed, Dr Jenna Wallace, one of the veterinarians formerly employed at Miami Seaquarium, has also been heavily involved with Themed Reality as of late.

Through various FOIA requests, they helped document a lot of things going wrong at Miami Seaquarium, especially where Tokitae was concerned. They’ve been highly critical of the Whale Sanctuary Project for a long time, and are continually trying to hold the people involved with WSP accountable for what happened to animals like Tokitae under their watch.

For Joe Kleiman’s part at least, ostensibly his intent is to just get the truth out there. He hasn't claimed to be overtly pro or anti captivity. Dr. Jenna Wallace is.... another story, let's just leave it at that.

Fine. So what’s the problem here?

You see, for how critical they are of the WSP continually failing to actually get a sanctuary up and running... they (or at least their fans) sure do seem excited by this.

In case you can't access that link, it's their most recent Facebook. First it quotes the French Minister of Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, on the transfer of the Wikkie and Keijo:

So.... the French Minister's solution to all these incomplete sanctuary projects from different countries is to.......... propose another project? This is expediting the process how exactly? This is like someone setting up a meeting to talk about how we're having too many meetings!

Sea Shepherd France's post is as follows:

TL;DR, it's more of the same. "We don't want these beautiful whales being exploited at another marine park prison, so we're proposing a beautiful sanctuary instead!"

Now, what, pray tell, is the reaction of Themed Reality fans who have long since decried the WSP's alleged scam? This. This is their reaction:

I just.... I cannot... there are no words. NOTHING IS CHANGING HERE! It's just another promise that "don't worry, we promise we're gonna build one, and it's gonna be great you guys!"

And yet the same people who balk at the WSP for not having anything ready are in love with Sea Shepherd France for pledging to do the exact same thing, but... better somehow?

Literally the only thing SS has done is is propose a sanctuary. At least WSP has actually selected a site and been doing environmental analyses (even if they aren't being fully transparent about the results of those). SS hasn't even done that!

To be clear, I'm not the biggest fan of Loro Parque. I think they've made a lot of mistakes in how they've managed their orcas. But they are not some roadside zoo either, and sending them there is still vastly better than sending them to Japan, let alone leaving them in the situation they are in now. These whales needed to moved yesterday!

Whether it's to Sea Shepherd or WSP, if transfers continue to be blocked, these whales would be doomed to stay in a crumbling facility waiting for a sanctuary to be built. I honestly fail to see how these people think building one would be any faster with SS than with WSP. It took the latter years just to get a site selected, because newsflash, one does not simply call dibs on some random bay and go "Yup, imma build it here!"

National Aquarium also pledged years ago to build and send their dolphins to a seaside sanctuary. It too has yet to take fruition, in part because they haven't been able to secure a safe or appropriate site. The people promising to build Corky a sanctuary have also been promising one for years. It's not there.

Sea Life Beluga Trust's sanctuary is literally the only organization that has actually been able to get a decent facility up and running. But somehow, somehow, these people expect Sea Shepherd to just magically be able to build one fast enough for these whales.

See, this is my problem with Themed Reality. At least one of the writers claims not to be pro or anti cap, but they actively court a fanatical anti-cap audience. On top of that, it's not even that productive an anti-cap audience, because they're call foul at WSP, but then applaud SS, even though green lighting either project wold still keep these whales in limbo at a crumbling facility. Oh, but it's fine as long as it's not Loro Parque or WSP, right? (It's not)

Outside the FOIA documents they've been able to obtain about how Friends of Tokitae and The Dolphin Company mishandled Tokitae's "rehabilitation", they're more a Whale Sanctuary Project/Charles Vinick Hate Club than anything else.... one that, ironically, makes a lot of big promises that it fails to deliver on.

Seriously, scroll through their Facebook page. Multiple times they make promises on "We've got a big bombshell of a blog post coming on this new revelation!" .... and then half the time that blog post never drops. Is it behind a paywall or something? I don't know. I haven't been able to find an option to subscribe for additional content. I don't see them on their offshoot blogs like The Flip/Shadow Warriors. All I know is that many of the big posts they've promised to put on their blog are still not there, as of this posting. But their Facebook page sure is rife of weird AI images with Charles Vinick and orcas... you know... for content.

They also did some big "expose" on one of WSP's founder's former affiliation with some kind of satanic church thing. I'm not exactly sure how this person's former spiritual affiliations relate to what WSP is doing now... aside from Themed Reality's broad assumptions that: "This guy was once part of this weird group that rebranded itself, which he allegedly lied about... and now WSP is not being transparent about their finances and site analyses, so AHAH!!! YOU SEE!?"

Seriously, some of their content borders on conspiracy theory style logic. It doesn't keep their audience informed. It's become just more shameless clickbait that satisfies their audience's itch to hate on the Whale Sanctuary Project, while simultaneously painting other animal rights groups in a more sympathetic light, despite them doing essentially the same things as WSP.

And look... there is plenty to criticize about them, but I guess my point here is: Themed Reality isn't part of the solution here. They're part of the problem.

“GRAND COUNTY, Colo. — The Center for Biological Diversity, conservation partners and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are offering rewards amounting to over $100,000 for information leading to arrests and convictions in the 2024 shooting death of a gray wolf in Colorado.

The Service announced Thursday that a necropsy confirmed that a gunshot wound killed the father of the Copper Creek pack, who died a few days after he was captured at the end of August. The wolf was in poor condition when he was captured, and the necropsy revealed that was caused by a gunshot wound, which led to his death.

The reward amount offered by conservation groups soared over the weekend.

“Every Coloradan should be outraged that a selfish poacher gunned down one of our state’s first reintroduced gray wolves, the father of the historic Copper Creek pack,” said Alli Henderson, southern Rockies director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “Shooting this irreplaceable wolf wasn’t just morally wrong — it was also illegal. It’s time for the killer to face justice.”

“We are absolutely disgusted to learn that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s necropsy of the Copper Creek Pack breeding male has determined that he was killed by illegal shooting,” said Michael Saul, Defenders of Wildlife Rockies and Plains program director. “This loathsome news underscores the need for the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission to stay the course and not let the bad-faith efforts of anti-wolf extremists distract from carrying out its balanced and thoughtful restoration plan, while this cash reward exemplifies the number of groups committed to working with all Coloradans to ensure a successful wolf reintroduction program.”

The wolf who died, 2309-OR, fathered five pups this spring. The father, mother and four of the pups were captured in late August and early September by Colorado Parks and Wildlife after conflicts with livestock. The father died shortly after he was captured.”

“Wolf 2309 (Shadow) was a hero,” said Delia Malone with Colorado Wild. “Against all odds he and his mate, 2312, created a family. We are committed to preserving his legacy. The majority of Coloradans know that the fate of our relative, the wolf, is our fate. Going forward, protecting wolves to ensure that once again their voices bless our vast public wildlands, 2309’s courage and commitment to family will be our guide.”

By wounding the father of the Copper Creek pack, the poacher likely contributed to the wolf-livestock conflicts. Wolf packs that are not strong and healthy enough to bring down wild ungulates, like elk and deer, are often forced to turn to vulnerable livestock. This is especially the case if livestock are not closely watched with guard dogs or range riders, or if other appropriate nonlethal coexistence measures are not properly used.”

“Someone out there knows who has been shooting at wolves. Regardless of your sympathies, poaching is unethical, immoral and illegal. Informants can work with law enforcement to maintain anonymity, and to make things right,” said Courtney Vail, board chair of the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project. “Not only have the perpetrators wasted taxpayer funds meant for ranchers to adapt to wolves, they also inflamed the conflict, fueling online threats that perpetuate the culture war. This ugliness represents the worst of us and distracts from the success stories of livestock producers on the ground in Colorado who have prepared for wolves, implemented nonlethal conflict reduction tools, and experienced no livestock losses this past season.”

Alley Cat Allies Achieves a Victory in Court, Exposing National Park Service's Underhanded Tactics

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO: Alley Cat Allies, the leader of the global movement to protect cats and kittens, has achieved a critical legal victory against the National Park Service (NPS) and its plan to eradicate cats from Puerto Rico’s San Juan National Historic Site. The United States District Court for the District of Columbia has denied the NPS’ attempt to transfer the Alley Cat Allies lawsuit to a court in Puerto Rico.

After this failed maneuver, the NPS is now hastening the implementation of its brutal plan before the court can determine its legality. It plans to round up cats on the historic site starting October 1, 2024.

“The NPS tried to delay by transferring the case and, now that the court has seen through its tactic, is acting in bad faith by moving forward in a rush,” said Yonaton Aronoff, a lawyer representing Alley Cat Allies. “Alley Cat Allies insists that the NPS cease any further steps in its deadly plan against Puerto Rico’s cats or we will seek appropriate relief.”

Alley Cat Allies argues that the NPS’s eradication plan violates the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and is arbitrary and capricious under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).

The plan, which includes trapping, removing, and “euthanizing” cats, is cruel and ineffective. Removing the cats creates a vacuum, which cats living in San Juan will quickly move into the historic site to fill. The NPS is only setting itself up for an endless cycle of killing rather than supporting humane, effective approaches like Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

The court’s decision is an important step forward, and Alley Cat Allies remains committed to holding the NPS accountable and protecting Puerto Rico’s community cats.

The people of Puerto Rico have voiced their opposition to the NPS plan. They, and Alley Cat Allies, recognize the threatened cats as community members who are woven into Puerto Rican culture and history. Shelter Ensuring proper shelter for the rescued gauvansh is a top priority. We have constructed spacious shelters with large shades to accommodate the growing number of protected cows. We continue building new cow sheds to meet increasing demands and provide a comfortable living environment, creating a holy and safe space for these precious gauvansh.

Dry Fodder Storage We have huge storage facilities capable of storing approximately 4 million kg of dry husk, which is essential for cow food. Annually, we require at least 9 million kg of dry fodder. Our team regularly inspects and maintains the storage facility to ensure the husk remains fresh and free from contamination.

Nourishment/Fodder Our gauvansh are fed a carefully crafted mixture of dry fodder, green fodder, grains, mustard cake, and jaggery. This balanced diet is provided twice a day, ensuring they receive essential nutrients for their overall well-being.

Medical Facility We have doctors available 24/7, providing comprehensive in-house medical facilities with ample stocks of necessary medicines and vaccinations. Our services include both routine medical assistance and emergency support for injured or sick cows, ensuring prompt and effective medical help.

Free Milk Distribution The small quantity of milk produced in our gaushala is freely distributed to saints, gausewaks, ashrams, and charitable hospitals in Haridwar and Rishikesh. Food Distribution

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our gaushala distributed food to thousands of affected families, sent supplies to remote regions, and ran food camps. We also regularly send truckloads of supplies to remote locations like Badrinath and Gangotri and run multiple camps to provide meals to those in need.

Bhandara

Our Bhandara for saints and others runs throughout the year. We regularly send vehicle loads of vegetables, grains, and other items for saints and tapaswis living in hilly regions like Badrinath and Gangotri, supporting their spiritual pursuits and fostering a sense of unity and care within the community.

Yagya and Cultural Events

Our gaushala is blessed with a magnificent yagya mandap situated on the serene banks of Ma Ganga, where accomplished Vedic Brahmins conduct sacred rituals. These spiritual endeavors create an atmosphere of divine grace and positive energy, fostering a deep connection with spirituality and celebrating our rich cultural heritage.

Hospital

We provide medical services through our dedicated hospital, D S Global Heart Care, at minimal or no cost to the needy in Uttarakhand. Our primary focus is to ensure accessible healthcare for all, contributing to the well-being and welfare of the community.

i dont know if it fits remus more (personally i see him more fitting for this) or poly!marauders but i was thinking… u know how people target black cats during halloween season??? (makes me sooo sad its so heartbreaking) my request is basically them walking back from a date or somewhere and seeing a tiny black kitten in a little trap or stuck and its all stressed and they rescue it and reader keeps fussing over the tiny little thing and taking care of it while they wait for someone to come and claim it and she gets the cat little costumes and treats so they decide to keep it??? hope its okay!!!

Remus Lupin x fem!reader ♡ 608 words

You shush Remus mid-sentence. 

He’s not so much offended as surprised. Curious, too. Your brow is wrinkled as if you’ve forgotten something and you’re trying to recall what it is. “Did you—”

“Wait, wait, shh.” 

Remus pauses for a few seconds while you cock your head, looking seemingly at nothing. 

“Dove,” he says quietly, “if you don’t want to hear about the book, it’s—”

“No, sorry.” You set a hand on his shoulder, still looking away from him. “Do you hear that?” 

“Hear what?” 

“It’s…” Your brows bunch even closer together, and then you’re moving, off the sidewalk and onto someone’s grass. 

Remus follows, because that’s what he does with you, apparently. You go around the side of the house, and then he hears it. A faint, desperate mewling.

“Oh, oh my god,” you breathe, your footsteps hastening. Remus has to lengthen his strides to catch up to you. When he gets closer, he sees you’ve found a cat stuck in a tree. 

Or, hardly. More like a kitten stuck in a sapling. It's small and black and trembling on a branch about the same height as Remus’ chest, which it’s bound to by a thin rope around its neck. The rope looks frayed and loosely tied, like it might just unravel if the kitten were to try and jump down, but he and the kitten seem in agreement that it’s hardly worth the risk. The poor thing’s cries worsen when it sees you coming towards it. 

“Oh, poor baby.” You reach out to touch it. It hisses at you but doesn’t snap its teeth, all bark and no bite. “Did somebody tie it here? Who would do this?” 

“I don’t know,” Remus answers honestly. 

The kitten’s trepidation of you wears off quickly, cautious dark eyes watching as you use a knuckle to rub gently underneath its chin. When it starts purring, Remus coos. 

“Hello, darling,” he murmurs, trying his hand at scratching between its ears. The kitten’s eyes close blissfully, the rest of its fear seemingly evaporating. A trusting nature coaxed out by less than a minute of gentleness. Remus hates to think of what prior treatment caused it to tremble and hiss. “Would you like to get out of here?” 

The rope is tied just loosely enough that Remus can get his fingers in between it and the kitten’s neck, the knot coming undone with a few tugs. You lift the kitten out of the tree as soon as it’s freed, cradling it close to your chest. 

“Hi, sweet baby,” you coo in a voice like spun sugar, light and sweet. “Oh, you’re such a love, aren’t you? It’s okay.” 

Your new friend seems content to be coddled. It curls up in your hands and purrs loud enough that even Remus can hear it rumbling like a heart-aching little motor. 

“It’s so little.” You sound awed, looking down at the kitten with pure adoration. Remus can’t help smiling at you with much the same sentiment. “Can we take it home? Just until we find it a good family.”

“Sure, dovey.” His own voice matches your soft tone. “I think we should. It certainly can’t stay here.” 

“No.” You frown. It’s more than justified, but Remus finds he can’t abide it anyway. He kisses your downturnt lips. 

“We’ll pick up some food and treats on the way home,” he says. 

“Oh!” Your face lights up. “I saw some little bat wings in the store last week, wouldn’t that be cute? It could be a tiny bat for Halloween.” 

Remus smiles and agrees. He knows already that this kitten isn’t going to any family other than your own.

When its government affairs arm weighs in on animal protection legislation, the AKC almost always positions itself as an opponent. Since 2008, we have been tracking the AKC’s record on such legislation. In the intervening years, the organization has sought to defeat humane measures more than 500 times in Congress and in state legislatures and local councils across the country. This is part of a deliberate strategy to mislead legislators and the public and block animal welfare reforms that enjoy wide bipartisan political support. State bills the AKC has opposed in 2024 include: one in New York State to ban debarking of dogs; one in Michigan to hold individuals liable for damages if they kill service animals; and one in New Hampshire that would allow pet owners to collect damages if their pet is intentionally or neglectfully killed. In recent years, the AKC has also opposed measures to ensure that dogs in breeding facilities have continuous access to water; to require owners to give their dogs access to adequate exercise space; to criminalize the possession, purchase or sale of animal fighting paraphernalia; and to prevent animal sexual abuse. This is all in addition to the many state bills and local ordinances around the country that the AKC opposes that aim to stop the sale of puppy mill puppies in pet stores. It’s pretty clear that dog welfare is not on the minds of the lobbyists executing this agenda.
