A Curated List Of My Favorite Skeletons (and Skulls!)
We shall start, of course, with the obvious: Stringray!
Tumblr media
Followed neatly by pufferfish!
Tumblr media
gila monster skull (shh they are sleeping)
Tumblr media
moving on to flamingos bc they have so little to work with but they stretch it so far
Tumblr media
veiled chameleon skull (plus art by Elena Barbieri so you comprehend the importance of the sclerotic ring bone!) (bc some eyes have bones! some eyes have bones and that is so so valid)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
love us a good old-fashioned mole
Tumblr media
the tucan, always a fun classic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in conclusion, a few dainty gibbon skeletons to calm you soul, bc why the heck not <3

(yes the last one is a real vintage postcard sold in real Natural History Museum gift shops, before for some reason they reconsidered this marketing decision)

20 animal skeletons rise out of the muddy cave floor and attack, while a hill giant zombie shuffles in from an adjacent cavern (Tom Baxa, from AD&D adventure "Masqueraider" by Randy Maxwell, Dungeon 14, TSR, Nov/Dec 1988)

Note
what skeleton has been your favorite in your personal collection? (not work)
My old geriatric Binturong! He's going to be a very fun build once he's fully degreased, the poor guy only has a few teeth left. He's an old captive-bred individual.

Two more skeletons
A gharial crocodile

and the skeleton of Čabulītis the alligator

(at the very least he got to live his last years out in the Tropical House instead of that pitiful... thing... they used to keep crocos and alligators in)

january's mythological creature was the bake-kujira! which is a yokai that takes the shape of an animated whale skeleton and brings a curse upon anyone who has the misfortune to encounter them.  A few tales suggest they seek revenge on the humans that took their lives (or the lives of whales in general) and will bring plagues and other disasters upon villages.
They're said to be accompanied by strange fish and birds and stormy tides.
i took this idea and ran with it- i wanted to give the whale a sort of "suspended" in plasma ghost look while also keeping the skeleton as the main part. When I was looking around for reference, I found all these neat radiographs of fish and took inspiration from that for the skeletal ghost fish (which are more the IDEA of skeletal fish than as is. I tried to make them just bones at first and i didn't care for it and it wasn't fun to draw). I also used this idea with the birds- though they are more a combination of the whale treatment and the fish treatment (bird skeletons are more fun to draw than fish skeletons)
the coloring page itself is available to all patrons and there a prints in my shop | please do not repost

[ID : A multi-media sculpture of a deer on a padded, backless bench. The bench is a muted red cushion on six possibly claw-footed, slightly curving legs of dark wood. On it, a deer lays, couchant on its belly, with its legs tucked to the side. The deer appears to be composed largely of wrapped yarn mixed with knitting. Dark and lighter red strands run in parallel bundles like skeins of yarn and bands of exposed muscle, criss-crossing in layers across the neck, torso, and legs. A cream white, thick mesh shawl is woven around the shoulders, running over the back and clumping into a short, thick tail. The belly is split open, showing brighter red yarn and coils of knitted intestines in dull pinks, browns, and gray, which spill out over the deer's legs. Most of the legs have brown knitted socks and felt-looking hooves, but one leg shows white bone from the hip to the back-bending knee. Also bone is the exposed deer skull. One large, staring eye is visible in the left socket, and the antlers are likewise bone. The ears are knitted in bone white. /end ID]

Skeleton Panda Sea Tunicate Appreciation Post!!! 💀 🐼 🌊
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clavelina ossipandae, the skeleton panda sea tunicate is a species of colonial ascidian, also known as sea tunicates, a group of sessile, marine filter-feeding invertebrates. Just some funky little guys!
First discovered near Kume Island in Japan by local divers, pictures of the animal attracted media attention in 2017. But they weren't given their formal taxonomic description until 2024
Love to sea it 🌊

I had to. Ever since I realised why the poses of the skeletons in Emmrich’s tarot looked familiar.
