OldEnglish pok(e) -> AngloFrench pokete (poke + diminutive ete)
we know/guess that the VulgarLatin poca actually comes from the ProtoGermanic source of *pukko
then why not

poke…ling?
or should i just keep pocca, the MiddleEnglish version that AF corrupted into pocket?
the lack of a non-french descended word for pocket is killing meeeeee
i even went to look at icelandic but they took theirs from latin!! how is that right?!
…i'm going to have to make my own goddamn pocket, aren't i

Hello! Do you have a link to this survey? Also on the original blog site I can not find anything.
Hello! It's not a real survey I am afraid. The person is joking that the Libertines music is a lot like '18th - 20th century anglofrench (queer) literature'. They've said 'A brief survey' to create a comedic title which mimics the kind of titles that are given to real surveys/studies. But in this instance, it's just a joke that has used the format of a survey title for comedic effect and no such survey actually exists. x

32 years ago I met this girl, dancing to 'Love Cats' by The Cure at a Leeds Uni party at Lupton Flats. Since then, through heaven and hell, we've stuck together. Wouldn't have it any other way. BREAKING NEWS: Concorde to take to the skies again after a Lithuanian billionaire agrees a deal with Airbus to rework the aircraft and make them airworthy again. Oh well, we can only dream! Happy April Fools. I always dreamed of flying on this marvel of the aviation world. Did you ever dream of going supersonic? You can see this aircraft at Manchester Airport. _______________________________ I love food, travel, coffee and culture. I like planes too, but they aren't the main focus of my blog. Unpacking my Library • Orlando • Kathleen Hale • 1940s
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ages ago, I posted about Babar the elephant, and mentioned in passing, Orlando, the marmalade cat...
Well, here he is.
He was drawn by the artist, Kathleen Hale at the end of the 1930s. Amazingly, some of his adventures were published, by Country Life and Transatlantic Arts in NYC, during WW2.
We recently found Orlando Become a Doctor from 1944. This is a charming story in which Orlando, observing the state of the people around him, sets us a kind of proto National Health Service. It’s a lovely story; especially as Ks father was a GP with the NHS from the very beginning.
Transatlantic Arts was the New York office of Country Life and was established by Noel Carrington as a form of soft propaganda. Carrington famously published High Street (1939) with illustrations by Eric Ravilious.
Noel Carrington is a very important figure in the history of 20C British publishing. He was part of the second wave of design reform in graphic design and printing. His big contribution was to pioneer the integration of image and text in different forms of book; both for adults and for children.
Carrington was able to exploit new processes in colour lithography, especially in the immediate make-ready of colour separations on acetate sheets. This process was developed by Cowell’s, the printers in Ipswich.
Here are some previous post and stuff about these kinds of books and printing...
