Happy Birthday the Scottish actor, Alexander “Sandy” Morton born 24th March 1945 in Glasgow.
Morton became one of Scotland’s most popular arch-villains when he was cast as Andy Semple in the long running soap opera Take the High Road.
Career highlights include the title role in Raindog Theatre’s critically acclaimed Scots rendition of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Robert Carlyle; R.P. McMurphy in One flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest, also directed by Robert Carlyle. He has also appeared in three different series of Taggart as different characters and was ithe pnly character to appear in every single episode of Monarch of the Glen as the servant, Golly Mackenzie. In Nicholas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising, he featured as Barde, the chieftain and temporary owner of One Eye.
Has appeared with actor Clive Owen in TV series Second Sight 1 & 2, and Mike Hodges films I’ll Sleep when I’m dead, and Croupier.
Alexander recently played the Prince of Darkness in the Dracula-inspired Robert Forrest BBC radio play Voyage of the Demeter. For BBC Radio he had the title role in Jekyll and Hyde, playing both parts. Also on radio, he was the first actor to play Inspector Rebus in the first adaptation of Ian Rankin’s Rebus series of books.
And on the small screen Sandy has been in the excellent Luther with Idris Elba and Shetland, he was also cast as a rival to Lenny Murdoch in our Scottish soap River City, as Billy Kennedy.

Lon Chaney and Renée Adorée in The Blackbird (Tod Browning, 1926)
Cast: Lon Chaney, Owen Moore, Renée Adorée, Doris Lloyd, Andy MacLennan, Willam West, Sidney Bracey, Ernie Adams. Screenplay: Tod Browning, Waldemar Young; titles: Joseph Farnham. Cinematography: Percy Hilburn. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons, A. Arnold Gillespie. Film editing: Errol Taggart.
The Blackbird begins with an atmospheric re-creation of Victorian Limehouse, but it turns into a routine melodrama, a showcase for Lon Chaney, who plays both the title character, a thief, and his alter ego, the Bishop, who pretends to be a missionary in the district. No one seems to suspect that the Blackbird and the Bishop are the same person, because in the latter persona Chaney contorts himself, holding one shoulder higher than the other and twisting one leg into an impossible position. Eventually, this masquerade will prove the truth of your mother's warning that if you keep contorting your face or body like that, it'll freeze that way. But in the meantime, the Blackbird falls for a music hall performer, Fifi Lorraine (Renée Adorée), who is also being pursued by a society toff (Owen Moore) known as West End Bertie. He's a thief, too, but in his case love for Fifi proves stronger than larceny. Tod Browning, who also wrote the screenplay (with Waldemar Young), handles this nonsense well. Adorée is charming, and her slightly risqué puppet show is fun, but the only real reason to see this movie is to admire Chaney's unfailing commitment to his considerable art.

The actor Peter Blake was born on December 8th 1948 in Selkirk.
Tumblr media
Unless you are a fan of the John Sullivan comedy, Dear John, you might not have heard of Peter Blake. Peter described himself as “the man who was nearly famous three times”, those occasions being for the sitcoms Dear John and Agony and a series of TV advertisements for Pepsi in the mid-1970s.
Born as John Beattie Dempsey his parents must have been proud Scots, they always referred to him as Ian. For those that are unaware Ian is the Scottish Gaelic term for John in return he termed them “a Border Maiden” and “a Scottish Soldier”.
Although the family moved south to Worcestershire when he was young, they returned home often on visits, most often during the Selkirk Common Riding in June.
After failing to make it as pop star Blake trained at what is now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in Glasgow, he made his debut in Frank Dunlop’s production of The Winter’s Tale at the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, in 1966). Three years later saw him as a “Stage Manager – not a part!” in strip clubs in Soho, before an Amsterdam production of Hair led to its West End version at the Shaftesbury. Pharaoh in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar, followed, he was however most well known on stage for playing Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show over a thousand times between 1975 and 1994.
Tumblr media
While his bread and butter was on the stage Peter made appearances in some well known shows through the years including, in the 70's Minder, Shoestring and Z Cars, he was also in all episodes of the Sitcom Agony as smarmy radio disc jockey Andy Evol. During the 80's he was in Murphy's Mob, Shine on Harvey Moon and Just Good Friends, it was also in the 80's he appeared in one of my fave sitcoms, Dear John as the resplendent Kirk St Moritz, dressed in white suit, big collars and golden medallion.
During the 90's he was in four episodes of the Scottish sitcom City Lights with the late great Gerard Kelly, as well as several episodes of Smith and Jones, in the new millenium, like every other self respected Scottish actor, he was in Taggart as well as the Bill and four episodes of Eastenders. Peter also appeared and sang in an advert for Pepsi Cola.
Peter Blake passed away on July 21st 2018 aged 69.
