Today’s Session July 3, 2020

   Two nights ago I went out back to smoke and while I was sitting there I noticed the motion activated light in the horse field started tripping.   I knew the horses were all safely in their stalls, and from the light I could see that there was nothing around that could have made it come on.   A moment later it went off, but within a very few minutes it was tripped again.   This happened three or four times while I sat there.

   It’s worth mentioning at this point that the spot where that particular motion light is located is the exact spot where I have repeatedly been attacked by unseen hands around my ankles trying to make me fall.   This has happened in front of witnesses who all swear that they couldn’t see or find anything that would make me stumble the way I had.

   Today, I went to the tree where the light is mounted to and sat in a chair with my Ghost Hunting Tools app (andriod) and decided to try to find answers.   The follwing is exactly (word-for-word) what took place.   Please know that as I began a storm suddenly started to develope so I had to cut the session short.

Me : Is there someone here who wants to talk with me?

Silence

Me : Talk into this box I’m holding so I can hear you

The app started beeping indicating that something was about to be said

Me : Will you tell me your name?

Ghost App : Jake

Me : Hey Jake, thank you.  Are you the one who was playing with the light on this tree two nights ago?

The app got quiet then slowly started beeping but then got quiet again as if he wanted to say something but changed his mind.

Me : It’s okay if you did.  Can you tell me why you wanted to play with it?

Jake : Hide

Me : You wanted to hide?   But you made the light come on.   Why was you hiding in the light?

Ghost App : Silence again

Me : It’s about to rain Jake, will you please explain why you wanted to hide in the light?

Ghost App : Silence again

Me : Jake please hurry, you can talk to me it’s alright.   Why did you want to hide in the light?

Jake : Stars

   It was at this point that it started to rain forcing me to head inside.   Of course I quickly thanked Jake for talking to me and asked him to not follow me anywhere.   This might seem like a very short conversation, but it actually took about 5 minutes.   When using the Ghost Hunting Tools app you have to be patient and learn how to recognize when someone (spirit) is about to actually speak.   The app has a vocabulary of over 9,000 words so you also have to learn how to read between the lines to help understand what is being said through it at times.

Binge-Watching: Gintama, Episodes 193-201

201 episodes. 79 days. 44 posts. God knows how many new followers. Gintama season 1 is finally done. What a wonderful ride it’s been.

Cresting the Hill

I’ve tended to break the enormity of GIntama’s first 201 episodes into pieces over the course of my watch. When a series is as long and varied as this one, dividing it into several sections really helps me contextualize my opinions and get my thoughts across more clearly. And one thing I’ve noticed is that every roughly 25-episode cours has its own kind of distinct character. The first cours was laying the groundwork, putting all the pieces in place while being pretty amusing and occasionally touching. Cours two was where the show really look off, upping the comedy and drama with fantastic Death Note-esque strategic mind games, the solidification of the Odd Jobs family, and the first of Gintama’s truly epic arcs in Aliens vs Yakuza. Cours three was the true beginning of this show taking over my life: the Benizakura and Andriod Invasion arcs blew my opinion of the show sky-high, while the comedic chops developed laser-point precision. Cours four felt like the show reaching its apotheosis, with too many tear-jerking moments to count and the show’s entire storytelling mechanism oiled to a fine sheen. Cours five, then, sees the show expanding outward and the scope of its world and cast really coming into focus, able to juggle massive blow-ups like the Shinsengumi Crisis arc right alongside the understated masterpiece that was Kagura’s umbrella story. Cours six was essentially one long build of smaller arcs that finally culminated in the show’s crowning achievent thus far: Yoshiwara in Flames. With the peak achieved, cours seven was a well-deserved breather, spooling out into moments of true absurdity and randomness that hit more often than they missed, using the show’s wonderfully-established setting to keep the emotions and investment high all throughout.

And now, cours eight. Looking back on this one after the more freeform exploits of seven, this definitely felt like a return to the basics in a lot of ways. All the old jokes, all the classic arc structures, they were all back. But I’m realizing, now that I’ve finished the season, that this cours wasn’t just a “let’s get back to business” sort of deal. This was a celebration of everything Gintama’s accomplished over the past 200 episodes. It’s pretty much nothing but new iterations of every kind of story Gintama’s ever told. One-off jokey affairs, subdued character pieces (I didn’t talk much about it at the time, but episode 188′s tale of Hasegawa’s spiral of despair and redemption was bloody fantastic), big epic arcs like the Spider’s Web, stupid and fun arcs like the Popularity Poll, experimental emotional bombs like Kagura’s Radio Exercises, meta cracks at the expense of the anime team, it’s all there. This wasn’t just Gintama doing what it does best; this was Gintama doing everything it does best. And it’s got the goodwill and legacy of 175 episodes backing it up, enhancing every little moment with the built-in familiarity we have with these characters and this world. 

More than anything else, this cours was a reaffirmation of why we fell in love with this show in the first place. And it shows that love in every familiarly crazy turn it takes. So we can start one episode on abridged Kamui backstory by way of a high school AU fanfic before transitioning into Hijikata dreaming of the intense, tactical, life-and-death stakes of Kondo’s snot going all Tarzan on him before revealing itself to be a sentient entity that would make all the newly minted Eddie/Venom shippers go crazy for, while the next five episodes are an arc delving into the secret mage/priest backstory of the freaking weather reporter who’s been in the background ever since the show’s earliest days, bringing a fantastic sense of closure to this low journey by finally elevating one of the show’s oldest mainstays to a true supporting player, as well as enhancing that history’s presence by calling back to that one-off gag where her marriage depressed Gintoki all the way back in... fuck, I think it was still the second cours at that point. And that same arc can introduce yet another fantastic addition to the show’s expansive cast with the demon Gedomaru, a mix between Okita’s nonchalant sadism and Kagura’s lack of impulse control, and if you know how much I love it when those characters interact, it should be no surprise that this bowl-cut brat stole my heart instantaneously (”I shall test it for poison first”). This entire final (for now) cours was essentially a promise from the show that no matter how long the road ahead might be, the journey will still be as magical as when we first began. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Let The Sun Shine

And speaking of that arc, if there’s one more piece of definitive proof that Gintama’s soul is still burning as strongly as ever, it’s the raw thematic power of the Dueling Clans arc. Because yes, it may include such absurdities as Shinpachi’s five-minute shoujo love story with a demonic parasite he was supposed to eat, the sneering villain being completely undermined by Gintoki’s refusal to play by his sneering villain tropes, and dueling mages using Gintoki’s severed testicles as weapons while he breakdances in his attempt to catch them, but it also ties perhaps more explicitly back to Gintama’s central thesis than any arc yet. The backstory of the Ketsuno and Shirono clans, told in a beautiful old-timey papyrus scroll style that gives the tale a real mythic weight, is the tale of every unexpectedly sympathetic villain that’s crossed paths with our team. Good intentions go astray, darkness clouds what was once light, and the families of two brothers torn apart by rage and jealously come to hate each other in an endless cycle of repeated offenses through the generations. And just like in Yoshiwara, the sun is hidden from view by this darkness, trapped behind clouds not even weatherlady extraordinare Ketsuno Ana can disperse.

The sun is the most powerful recurring symbol in this show, representing the light of hope and the future that everyone strives for. It’s no accident that pretty much every OP ends with Gintoki and his friends either riding into the sunset or standing and staring at it high in the sky. The sun drives us all onward, away from our failures and into our potential. WIthout it, our judgement is clouded, and we make horrible mistakes. We insult those who were once our friends, too self-centered to see how we hurt them. Then, to try and make up for those mistakes, we trade away the women in our lives without any regard for how this choice will hurt her in turn (side note, I love how GIntama keeps coming back to this idea of stolen autonomy as something that must be atoned for, especially when so many other anime struggle with this concept). In our blindness, we only sink deeper and deeper into our hatred, unable to see any way out but death... until a certain silver-haired samurai with a magic wooden sword arrives to remind us of the light that’s still worth fighting for, almost certainly with an instantly iconic quote to make that message stick (”I’m done standing in the rain of a girl’s tears”). It’s serendipitous that the legacy character this arc centers around to bring about its sense of closure is also a weather person, and thus directly connected to that symbol itself. Whether that was planned or not, I don’t know. Sometimes, things just really work out.

And in the end, Gintama will always believe in that truth. Things can get better. Now matter how cloudy the sky is, the sun can always shine again. Sometimes, it just takes a DBZ light show to make that happen. But hey, what’s life without a little absurdity?

Merry Last Episode

And so, we’ve reached the end. The battles have all been fought, the trials have all been faced, the tears have all been shed. So for one last hurrah, we get a pair of Christmas episodes (in March, natch) that functions as both a contest between Kagura’s two dads to be her Santa and a spirited parody of classic anime and Christmas story tropes alike. And in typical Christmas fashion, it’s also the warmest, fuzziest ending I could’ve hoped for. It’s got no shortage of absolutely adorable moments to get you in the festive spirit; Kagura in that old-fashioned winter dress was so cute it should be illegal. Also, Otae is officially Kagura’s mom now and I apologize for nothing. Not to mention we get what I think are the first times Kagura has ever explicitly referenced herself as Gintoki’s daughter (”And this guy has kids, so it’s a perfect match.” ”Then you study it with your old man while he’s reading the newspaper.”). Guys, I don’t even no what to say at this point. I haven’t been this invested in a surrogate daughter relationship since The Last of Us. They. Are. PERFECT. And I’ve got 166 more episodes to spend with them. What have I done to deserve such bounty, God? Whatever it was, let me know so I can keep doing it.

Wow. 166 episodes. I’m over halfway through Gintama, and I’ve still got more show left to go through than the previous longest anime I’ve watched (Hunter x Hunter, which clocked in at 148 episodes). And I’m nowhere close to burned out. I’m still as excited to see what comes next as I ever was. This show really is something truly remarkable. Thank you for sticking with me for so long, GIntama. I look forward to all the memories we have yet to make together.
