Naturally, he learned later on that Gohan ended up developing a bond with Piccolo and vice-versa, but at first, that honestly didn't get rid of his anger towards the Namekian.

Deep down, Goku truthfully formed some resentment towards him - as it didn't help he and Piccolo weren't on "friendly" terms far before this point. There were more important matters to pay attention to, with the Saiyans and eventually Frieza, so Goku didn't focus on it then. He admitted that he was bothered by what Piccolo did to Gohan all those years ago, and Chi Chi understood as part of her was still angry at Piccolo too, but she did point out that "Gohan cares for him a lot, despite it all. That means something, right?". 

And, it did. If Gohan didn't harbor any bitterness towards Piccolo, then maybe, they shouldn't either. Goku did see that the Namekian genuinely cared for his son to boot.

It was time to let bygones be bygones, so he let it go. Nowadays, Piccolo's someone he trusts with Gohan's (and Goten's) wellbeing.

   Two nights ago I went out back to smoke and while I was sitting there I noticed the motion activated light in the horse field started tripping.   I knew the horses were all safely in their stalls, and from the light I could see that there was nothing around that could have made it come on.   A moment later it went off, but within a very few minutes it was tripped again.   This happened three or four times while I sat there.

   It’s worth mentioning at this point that the spot where that particular motion light is located is the exact spot where I have repeatedly been attacked by unseen hands around my ankles trying to make me fall.   This has happened in front of witnesses who all swear that they couldn’t see or find anything that would make me stumble the way I had.

   Today, I went to the tree where the light is mounted to and sat in a chair with my Ghost Hunting Tools app (andriod) and decided to try to find answers.   The follwing is exactly (word-for-word) what took place.   Please know that as I began a storm suddenly started to develope so I had to cut the session short.

More than anything else, this cours was a reaffirmation of why we fell in love with this show in the first place. And it shows that love in every familiarly crazy turn it takes. This entire final (for now) cours was essentially a promise from the show that no matter how long the road ahead might be, the journey will still be as magical as when we first began. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Let The Sun Shine

And speaking of that arc, if there’s one more piece of definitive proof that Gintama’s soul is still burning as strongly as ever, it’s the raw thematic power of the Dueling Clans arc. Because yes, it may include such absurdities as Shinpachi’s five-minute shoujo love story with a demonic parasite he was supposed to eat, the sneering villain being completely undermined by Gintoki’s refusal to play by his sneering villain tropes, and dueling mages using Gintoki’s severed testicles as weapons while he breakdances in his attempt to catch them, but it also ties perhaps more explicitly back to Gintama’s central thesis than any arc yet. The backstory of the Ketsuno and Shirono clans, told in a beautiful old-timey papyrus scroll style that gives the tale a real mythic weight, is the tale of every unexpectedly sympathetic villain that’s crossed paths with our team. Good intentions go astray, darkness clouds what was once light, and the families of two brothers torn apart by rage and jealously come to hate each other in an endless cycle of repeated offenses through the generations. And just like in Yoshiwara, the sun is hidden from view by this darkness, trapped behind clouds not even weatherlady extraordinare Ketsuno Ana can disperse.

The sun is the most powerful recurring symbol in this show, representing the light of hope and the future that everyone strives for. It’s no accident that pretty much every OP ends with Gintoki and his friends either riding into the sunset or standing and staring at it high in the sky. The sun drives us all onward, away from our failures and into our potential. WIthout it, our judgement is clouded, and we make horrible mistakes. We insult those who were once our friends, too self-centered to see how we hurt them. Then, to try and make up for those mistakes, we trade away the women in our lives without any regard for how this choice will hurt her in turn (side note, I love how GIntama keeps coming back to this idea of stolen autonomy as something that must be atoned for, especially when so many other anime struggle with this concept). In our blindness, we only sink deeper and deeper into our hatred, unable to see any way out but death... until a certain silver-haired samurai with a magic wooden sword arrives to remind us of the light that’s still worth fighting for, almost certainly with an instantly iconic quote to make that message stick (”I’m done standing in the rain of a girl’s tears”). It’s serendipitous that the legacy character this arc centers around to bring about its sense of closure is also a weather person, and thus directly connected to that symbol itself. Whether that was planned or not, I don’t know. Sometimes, things just really work out.

And in the end, Gintama will always believe in that truth. Things can get better. Now matter how cloudy the sky is, the sun can always shine again. Sometimes, it just takes a DBZ light show to make that happen. But hey, what’s life without a little absurdity?

Merry Last Episode

And so, we’ve reached the end. The battles have all been fought, the trials have all been faced, the tears have all been shed. So for one last hurrah, we get a pair of Christmas episodes (in March, natch) that functions as both a contest between Kagura’s two dads to be her Santa and a spirited parody of classic anime and Christmas story tropes alike. And in typical Christmas fashion, it’s also the warmest, fuzziest ending I could’ve hoped for. It’s got no shortage of absolutely adorable moments to get you in the festive spirit; Kagura in that old-fashioned winter dress was so cute it should be illegal. Also, Otae is officially Kagura’s mom now and I apologize for nothing. Not to mention we get what I think are the first times Kagura has ever explicitly referenced herself as Gintoki’s daughter (”And this guy has kids, so it’s a perfect match.” ”Then you study it with your old man while he’s reading the newspaper.”). Guys, I don’t even no what to say at this point. I haven’t been this invested in a surrogate daughter relationship since The Last of Us. They. Are. PERFECT. And I’ve got 166 more episodes to spend with them. What have I done to deserve such bounty, God? Whatever it was, let me know so I can keep doing it.

Wow. 166 episodes. I’m over halfway through Gintama, and I’ve still got more show left to go through than the previous longest anime I’ve watched (Hunter x Hunter, which clocked in at 148 episodes). And I’m nowhere close to burned out. I’m still as excited to see what comes next as I ever was. This show really is something truly remarkable. Thank you for sticking with me for so long, GIntama. I look forward to all the memories we have yet to make together.
