January 27th is the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. In honor of this day, we are posting an artists’ book by Andrea Botto.
Andrea Botto’s grandfather, Primo Benedetti, died on January 27, 2010, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Botto made this book in memory of the return journey his grandfather made from internment in the Nazi prisoner of war camps in northern Germany to his home in Tuscany between June 19th and August 26th in 1945. Botto dedicated the book to all those who shared this terrible experience with his grandfather.
In this artist’s book, Botto includes facsimile reproductions of notes and memorabilia taken from a small notebook that belonged to his grandfather, as well as letters and postcards sent and received by his family. (Taken from the introduction by the artist.)
Image descriptions: 1-3 All images include facsimile of old letters and documents, often inserted into the binding, along with black and white images of photos and an illustration.
19.06-26.08.1945 Botto, Andrea, 1973- [artist] First edition. Ravenna : Danilo Montanari editore ; Berlin : Podbielski Contemporary, 2014. 1 volume (unpaged) : illustrations, facsimiles, maps ; 28 cm + 1 folded leaf. English; Italian
