The longtime fans of electronica, André Giesemann and Daniel Schulz , decided to combine their love for the German techno scene and photography in a joint project. The couple began collaborating on their photo project Vom Bleiben in 2009, which features ghostly images of the inside of clubs after the ravers left.

“The moment before everything is put back in order only exists for a short time. We always take photos at the same moment - between the end of the night and when the room is back to normal - with the cleaning lights on. We only take one picture at a time, as the routines of the club staff and the chaos mean that it is often not possible to take many pictures. We are always looking for interesting rooms and clubs. That's a fascination for us.”

Her pictures, which were taken with a large format camera with a 75 mm lens, try to capture the emptiness of these rooms immediately after the end of the club nights - “the moment when the traces of the event become visible,” says Giesemann from Hamburg. - In these images, the harsh light made even more intense by the couple's long exposure (sometimes several minutes) reveals the debris from the previous night's activities. Used beer bottles overflow on bar tops; discarded packets of cigarettes are scattered on the floor; DJ booths are empty. “When the clubs close, we will enter the battlefield that has been left behind,” said the two of them.

Die langjährigen Fans der electronica, André Giesemann und Daniel Schulz, beschlossen, ihre Liebe zur deutschen Technoszene und zur Fotografie in einem gemeinsamen fortlaufenden Projekt zu verbinden. Die Zusammenarbeit begann im Jahr 2009 mit Vom Bleiben, in dem gespenstische Bilder der Innenseiten von Clubs nach dem Weggang der Raver zu sehen sind.

Mit ihren Bildern, die mit einer Großformatkamera mit 75-mm-Objektiv aufgenommen wurden, versuchen sie, die Leere dieser Räume unmittelbar nach dem Ende der Clubnächte festzuhalten - „der Moment, in dem die Spuren des Ereignisses sichtbar werden“, sagt der Hamburger Giesemann. „Die meisten dieser Clubs kennen und haben wir erlebt. In gewisser Weise ist diese Serie für mich und den in Berlin ansässigen Daniel wie ein Archiv von Clubs, da einige Gebäude nicht mehr existieren. Manchmal existieren sie nur für eine Weile als temporäre Räume.“ In diesen Bildern enthüllt das raue Licht, das durch die langen Belichtungszeiten des Paares (manchmal mehrere Minuten) noch intensiver wird, die Trümmer von den Aktivitäten der Nacht zuvor. Gebrauchte Bierflaschen laufen über; weggeworfene Zigarettenschachteln liegen verstreut auf dem Boden; DJ-Kabinen stehen leer. "Wenn die Clubs schließen, betreten wir das Schlachtfeld, das zurückgelassen wurde", sagt das Paar.

„Der Moment, bevor alles wieder in Ordnung gebracht wird, besteht nur für kurze Zeit. Wir fotografieren immer im selben Moment - zwischen dem Ende der Nacht und dem Zeitpunkt, an dem der Raum wieder "normal" wird - mit den aufleuchtenden Reinigungs-Lampen. Wir machen immer nur ein Bild, da aufgrund der Routine der Clubmitarbeiter und des Chaos oft nicht viele Bilder aufgenommen werden können. Wir sind immer auf der Suche nach interessanten Räumen und Clubs. Es ist eine Faszination für uns."

Photographer André Giesemann is deeply interested in the question of how architectural space is defined by its activation. Based in Hamburg, Germany, Giesemann photographs vacant spaces during moments of non-use. His images show plainly the physical facts of the room or building — they are almost documentary in that respect — but they are really about what goes on when the camera is not there. (x)

LA BOÎTE DE NUIT Thematic exhibition

Continuing its reflection upon locations dedicated to leisure activities – following on from last year’s exhibition Landskating, les lieux du skate à travers le monde –, in 2017 the villa Noailles will devote its annual architecture exhibition to discos. Through a selection of projects from the 1960s to today, the exhibition aims to apprehend the architectural tools put into play in the conception of these emancipating spaces. Discos are a testing ground for architects: through technological and formal devices, they develop an artificial world with a controlled atmosphere that is isolated from the outside.

Alongside a collection of projects from France and abroad, a commission was placed with an architect to design a disco at the heart of the villa Noailles itself. Open for the duration of the exhibition, this pop up “nightclub” highlights and offers to experience in vivo the exhibition’s intent. The exhibition presents rare documents, some are unseen (plans, models, photographs, sculptures, graphic works, videos), photographic series and texts by guests contributors.
