#“and like the man who stayed over for dinner - I did”#Cushing's life is so interesting in a Benjamin Button esque sort of way #Him talking about meeting all sorts of eclectic people from high profilers to your average joe #One of my favourites is him being at a dinner watching Marlene Dietrich perform in Paris #And the greek diner he used to frequent eating donuts while he was broke in the US #And the owners thanking him and giving him free meals just because the British fought the nazis #All this did make his moments talking about depression and being suicidal really harrowing in the book #When he felt useless not being able to serve in the war due to his health problems #Or attempting to make attempts on his own life several times after his wife passed only to stop because he found a letter from her #Just UGH #It's a great showcasing in how in the most terrible of circumstances you can choose to still be kind to those around you #And how he chose to truly live by that as best as he could despite all the setbacks #I wanna reread his book again but it's in another state at the moment 😩
