i can’t stop rereading software inability. so i have some questions. how do you think oscar ‘felt’ when he realised he could feel? how did he deal with all these new feelings and experiences? he must have felt scared? but then. did he even know how ‘scared’ feels? i feel like im over complicating things but this fascinates me so much. it’s my favourite fic you’ve ever written.

He was breathless, his ears were ringing and the knuckles of his right hand hurt.

Oscar wasn’t sure what had just happened, how he’d even got here. One moment he’d been on the dance floor getting an sos text from Lando and the next he was in the alleyway behind the club, with a large drunk man face down on the pavement in front of him.

He tried to piece it all together. After getting the text he came running and spotted the confrontation. He’d seen Lando push the man and the man ball up a fist in response. Before Oscar had even realised it, he’d balled up a fist as well. 

He’d just wanted to protect Lando. He hadn’t wanted to hurt anyone but Lando had been in danger and a simple counter wouldn't have worked. Punching that man was the only choice Oscar had and he’d reacted without even thinking, like something else had taken over his body, like a fire had suddenly been lit and stoked and roared into life. In that moment he felt like everything turned red, he felt like he was out of control and yet had more control than ever before.

He felt!

And he was still feeling.

What he was feeling he had no idea, he didn’t know how to describe it. This was all new, overwhelming, suffocating but he quite liked it.

He felt alive.

So, I actually am curious about this.

I use quite a few different programs for editing my work, specifically I prefer using ProWritingAid but have also used Grammerly in the past too before I wanted something with more features and specialized.

Both ProWritingAid, Grammerly, and other editing software often have features that can reword sentences for you for numerous reasons, such as getting rid of a "passive voice," for clarity, or just to make it sound better.

I'm not entirely sure what sort of program is running to do this. Is it AI based? Perhaps. Or maybe an algorithm of some kind? I am not sure. I know very little about software.

Personally, I find it really helpful and it speeds up the line editing, which I hate doing. Content editing and rewriting? Fine. LINE EDITING? Ugh.

But what is everyone else's opinion on this?

An alternative to google docs

To paraphrase a recent post: google docs is pants as a writing tool.

I'm suggesting MS Word as an alternative. Yeah, I know, it's not perfect, but it is (IMO), better than google docs.

But I'm not just suggesting Word when I suggest Word. I'm suggesting a free Microsoft account, which gives you Word and OneDrive.

It only takes a minute or two and a free account gets you:

Word in the browser

A OneDrive with 5gb of storage - now, 5gb might not be much holistically but in terms of text based documents, it's decent. My entire 'Fic' folder is 2.11gb. That's everything I've ever written and all their drafts, wips and their multiple drafts, betaed fics, ideas, writing refs and guidance, archived drafts/fics, AND the 500+ fics I've downloaded as epubs from AO3).

Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneNote - basically the whole Microsoft365 suite - in the browser

I use Word exclusively, both for fic and for work (where I write extensively), and the online version does everything I need. It autosaves, has version control/reversion, and sharing (if that's what you're into), and you can seamlessly copy and paste from Word into AO3's rich text editor - no formatting adjustments required.

Anyway, it's something to think about. If you want to give it a try, the simplest way is to create a new OneDrive account, which will also give you everything else.

So apparently it's not common knowledge that there's a completely 100% free and open source version of Microsoft Word available? You do not need to pay a subscription fee to Microsoft just to have a word processer, you do not need to shell out $50 for a one-time purchase.

That feeling when you're writing a scene and decide you need to mention coordinates so you spend an hour making a fantasy map just so you can overlay a grid to make actual coordinates from an arbitrary origin point when you could've just made the character not specify the coordinates.

Love and Deepspace PC tutorial

Not sure if anyone wants to play this on their PC but I'll drop a basic tutorial anyways (please don't repost this on twitter or any other platforms ty)

EDIT 2024 NOV: It's available in English too, check it out HERE!

Things to know before we start:

It's only available in Chinese

HOWEVER you can switch the voices to English, so they will speak to you in English, but the interface language will still be in Chinese

Your PC will need to be able to enable Virtualization Technology (VT) (and maybe at least 8GB RAM so it can run the game smoothly)

Did I mention it's in Chinese? Yeah, it's in Chinese

Step 1

Download the .exe file on the official site and install it

The .exe is essentially an emulator with the game attached to it. You can later then use the store in the emulator to download all sorts of other games too, such as Tears of Themis, Light and Night etc...they are all officially licensed

Step 2

Once you run the game, it should come up with a QR code which will direct you to a page on the Mumu emulator site instructing you on how to enable VT based on the PC you have

I don't have a screenshot because I've already enabled it

If you can make sense of the instructions, great! The operating menus will be in English anyways

However if none of this makes sense to you, find a tutorial on google/youtube for your PC type, try looking up "how to enable virtualization in bios"

Step 3

Once all the VT is sorted it's pretty simple, log in and start the game

Step 4

Once you get to the starting page, it probably looks identical to the English version

Change the language if you wanna hear them speak English

Extras

Press F11 to go full screen mode

It will automatically go landscape in battle mode. Control with wasd keys and mouse, or connect a controller to it. (I've tried with PS4 controller and it works)

If you're playing on a laptop or a monitor that can be turned vertical, you can use this function to turn the game window vertically

To experience the maximum screen space, you can set your emulator to the iPad dimensions

This should be enough to get you started, the VT bit might be a little tricky and scary since you do not need to access BIOS in normal day to day use. The rest of the menus, if you know it in English by heart it shouldn't be difficult to navigate, just fiddly. I supposed you can take some screenshots of the mobile ver and have it on hand when you need to navigate it on the PC.

The thing about the Eyler Sisters is that none of them truly like each other. Sure, they're sisters, and they claim to love each other, but I think the resentment that builds between them simply becomes too much.

Juliette, the oldest, resents that she has to take care of her sisters. She feels like a servant -- and practically is in Arcadia. Hell, her VR!Self is always either a maid or knight to Glitch. As the oldest, her parents expect her to care for her younger sisters without question. They are busy people and don't particularly care if Juliette does anything else, no matter how much she begs and pleads for a life of her own.

Genevieve/Glitch, the middle child, oft forgotten and left to her own devices. She can only beg Juliette to hang out with her so many times before she snaps, and Stacy is too young for them to have any meaningful conversations. Combined with not getting enough attention from their parents, and Glitch will often claim that her whole family hates her. Which...to be honest, might be true.

Stacy/Static, the youngest, also often ignored by both her parents and older sisters. All three are at different stages of their life, but Juliette & Glitch are at least closer in age and have more to talk about. Stacy is usually dragged along with whatever the other two are doing, though of course this isn't by choice.

It's kinda odd, though. When Glitch forces herself into Arcadia and brings Juliette & Stacy with her, she doesn't even try brainwashing them into loving her. She doesn't try mind controlling them at all, actually. They just kinda...go along with her plans. Maybe it's because they're sick of their parents, or are scared of Glitch's new powers. Or maybe they do like their sister. Or maybe they're planning on betraying & killing her idk.
