No one has ever asked a male musician to give up their no. 1 spot on the charts to allow another artist their time to shine. No one has ever asked it of a female musician either. The only person it's asked of is Taylor. Look at it from her perspective. If she doesn't hold the No. 1 position for a certain length of time, she will have to endure hundreds if not thousands of articles about how she has lost a step. She didn't hold No. 1 for x weeks, so she's on her way out and not as good as X [insert whatever artist from history they want to scream is better]. I'm pretty sure that was what it was about to begin with, but these petty attacks from Billie and her manager probably did inspire her to step on her neck a little harder than she had to. And, I don't blame her, because she really does get crucified no matter what she does. So why not go for complete domination?
you’re so right about Taylor being crucified, damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t. I might have misphrased that post but what I’m trying to get at is mostly my personal opinions. Generally speaking (ie not abt my personal opinions but the general consensus), you’re right to say that no one should expect things of taylor that they would not expect of a male artist.
personally, if we were talking about a male artist whose music I enjoyed as much as Taylor’s, I would “expect” the same thing of him. But also I’m not expecting Taylor to do anything as much as wishing she was not caught up in this whole charts thing to the point where she doesn’t let another artist have their moment. I know you didn’t say this in your ask, but since this is how the music industry works, there isn’t anything “immoral” abt this per say, but at the same time I feel like she is in a place where she has the capacity to be the bigger person/let someone else have the spotlight but doesn’t seem to have the willingness, which is a little disappointing.
also so true the media’s consensus does matter a lot to her and I knowww there would be so many ppl gloating/being absolutely horrid if she were to fall off #1, with all this overexposure it would be so harsh. I guess a certain level of maturity/stability is needed to have a thick enough skin to not really care abt what others say/to do the “right” thing when it isn’t 100% beneficial for you which taylor doesn’t have. I am NOT blaming her btw, she is human and has flaws and maybe this is one of her bigger insecurities- that’s perfectly fine, but it is what it is. Same reason why she might have been clamping down esp hard on Billie like you said. Is it a good thing? No, but to me it’s still understandable and it isn’t rlly a major critique imo
Also in the light of Billie’s stationhead comment abt what is likely abt the eras tour, she doesn’t owe Taylor anything and vice versa so they can both act however they wish, but imo some reactions are better than others. For example if someone insults you, you could insult them back, retaliate etc OR you could be the bigger person and walk it off. No one would (reasonably) blame you for retaliating, but at the same time it might not have been the best reaction. Which is also fine, no one has to be 100% moral all the time, we are all human etc
as for why not going for whole domination, a bit off topic but this whole debate kind of reminds me of The Man. she basically says men can get away with ____, but when I do ___ I’m persecuted for it so #girlboss #feminism. But the thing is NO ONE should be excused for some of the actions in the video (flashing dollars etc), including men!! Similarly I don’t think she SHOULD be doing for whole domination, but it’s up to her
Ultimately I think it boils down to what she can/wants to do vs what she should do, but again this is all my opinion and she is not obligated to act ethically, even tho I wish she would
#this got way too long sorry ahah#And my explanation kind of tapered off towards the end hhhh#but yep these are just my thoughts#anon#ask
