Imagine Derek and Cove realizing they're both crushing on the Mc before the Mc does. It gets a little awkward but they're besties and each of them think the other 1 is a better fit for the Mc.

Like Cove pointing out how Derek was so thoughtful about father's day, when it never occurred to Cove.

Like wise, Derek points out how mc and Cove are always together, Cove knows the Mc the best.

It goes like that, back and forth, each 1 encouraging the other until they agree they're both a good match. They would never hurt the Mc, they would rather die. It's a bonding experience.

In the end, they make a pact that if any of them date the Mc, the other would be supportive. No matter what, they will always remain friends.

I imagine this pact inspires Derek's proposal deal. He knows he's no competition for Cove with how busy and distant he'll be with school. He knows he can't confess and murky the waters, only to be unavailable. It's not fair to the Mc or Cove but if there's any hope for the future, he atleast wants to make his intentions somewhat known.
