A 2175-Years-Old 'Dancing Moses' Statue Discovered in Turkey
The latest discovery in the ongoing excavations in the Ancient City of Stratonikeia, known as the city of eternal loves and gladiators, was a “Dancing Moses” statue, an iconic figure from ancient mythology.
According to the statement made by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the statue found in the works carried out in the ancient city is this unearthed statue is the sole original Hellenistic period piece attributed to a work famously replicated during the Roman period.
Today the ancient city is located in Eskihisar village of the Yatagan district of Mugla Province. It is one of the cities of the Ancient Caria Region. With an area of 7 km, it is one of the largest marble-built cities in the world. It is the only city-state with two major sanctuaries dedicated to Hekate and Zeus.
Historically, the “Dancing Moses,” considered one of the muses born from Zeus and Mnemosyne’s union, was reputedly crafted by Philiskos, a renowned sculptor from the second century B.C. While there are numerous Roman period reproductions of this piece throughout Anatolia and Greece, the newly discovered statue from Stratonikeia stands out as the only authentic work by Philiskos from the Hellenistic era.
Tumblr media
Information about Philiskos, the renowned sculptor from the Hellenistic Period, is quite scarce. Philiskos was known for his work in bronze sculpture, particularly in creating statues and sculptures of athletes and gods. He was active during the 4th century BCE and hailed from Rhodes, a center for artistic innovation during that era.
Philiskos is often mentioned in historical records and texts for his mastery in portraying movement and anatomical accuracy in his sculptures. Unfortunately, none of his original works have survived, leaving us to rely on written accounts and references by other ancient authors to understand his artistic prowess and contributions to the field of sculpture during the Hellenistic Period.
Therefore, the discovery of the statue in Stratonikeia is significant for archaeologists because it demonstrates Philiskos’ artistic presence in the ancient city during the Hellenistic period.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The statue and pedestal were found during excavations inside the frigidarium of the Roman bath in Stratonikeia. However, the head and arms of the sculpture were notably absent from the findings.
Previously, a replica of this revered statue was discovered in the Roman baths of the ancient city of Perge, as well as another in Rhodes, demonstrating its widespread replication during the Roman period.
The statue will be exhibited at the Muğla Museum after the work to be done.

A 2,200-year-old amphitheater in one of the largest ancient marble cities in the world, Stratonikeia, located in nowadays Muğla in Turkey's southwest, will be restored and brought back to life.
Professor Bilal Söğüt, head of the excavations in Stratonikeia and an academic at Pamukkale University's Archaeology Department, told Anadolu Agency Wednesday that the city was heavily damaged by earthquakes in various periods throughout history and the amphitheater was one of the most damaged parts.
"The restoration of the amphitheater will be carried out gradually with utmost attention," Söğüt said, adding that the historical cite became one of the most grandiose structures 2,000 years ago with its three-story stage building and monumental structure.

The Ancient City of Lagina . The site of Lagina is an ancient Carian city located at Turgut village in the province of Mugla. Lagina Hekate used to be a Carian cult site belonging to the ancient city of Stratonikeia located at about 11 km from Lagina. During the recent excavations made by Turkish archaeologists, it has been discovered that the history of the site dates back to the Bronze Age, about 3,000 BCE. It became an important religious center during the rule of Seleucid kings around 3rd century BCE Major constructions were made in the 1st century BCE under the reign of emperor Augustus. According to the inscriptions found at Lagina and at the bouleuterion of Stratonikeia city, these two sites were connected by a sacred road. After the Hellenistic and Roman periods the Byzantines also settled at this site but then it was abandoned most probabily because of the earthquakes and invaders. . . Music: Beni Beni by Niyaz . . .

Ancient Cities in Turkey
Ancient Anatolian (Turkish) Cities, Ancient Cities in Anatolia, Ancient Cities in Turkey
Anatolia-the heartland of Modern Turkey is that region lying to the south of the Black Sea, to the east of the Aegean Sea, north of the eastern Mediterranean Sea and, inland, the Fertile Crescent, and west of the Caucasus-Azerbaijani districts. A very roughly hewn upland region for the most part, it has been both a home and a highway for a bewildering variety of peoples for as long as there have been humans.
This list (Ancient (Turkish) Cities) will give a brief overview of Anatolian chronology from the earliest times to the present. It does not pretend to be complete in any sense; Anatolia is a very large area, and though there have been times, like the present, when it has been completely unified, there have also been many times when fragmented local nations were the rule. In such instances, I have either listed the most significant among local conditions, or simply indicated a general period of local conditions. Even during times of union with large Empires, very often outlying districts were partially or completely autonomous; read Xenophon’s Persian Expedition for an insight into conditions obtaining in the Anatolian highlands of the Persian Empire, during the winter of 401/400 BCE.

Byzantine tombs unearthed in marble city
Tumblr media
Some 65 Byzantine-era tombs have been unearthed in the most recent archaeological excavations in the ancient city of Stratonikeia, known as the city of gladiators in the western province of Muğla’s Yatağan district.
“We are continuing works in the graveyard field. Sixty-five Byzantine era tombs were unearthed in the ancient city. The tombs belong to both adults and children,” said the head of the excavations, Pamukkale University Professor Bilal Söğüt.
Teams have uncovered finds related to a settlement from 3,500 years ago, as well as many artifacts from various periods of time, Söğüt said.
He said the ancient city of Stratonikeia, the world’s largest marble city, had retained its importance in the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Anatolian beylik, Ottoman and Republican eras, adding that it was listed on the UNESCO Tentative List.  Read more.

Stratonikeia: Carian Day Dream
Stratonikeia is a place out of a dream. Ancient marble structures still intact and many with missing parts gleam under the sun. Everywhere the ground is bursting forth with hundreds of pieces from past eras: Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Selcuks, Ottomans and Republic. The span of this ancient site surprised me and it seems endless in its array of treasures and histories. Since the late 1970′s, Stratonikeia has been under excavation. Amos, it's Agean sister city, has yet to be properly excavated and I always wonder just what magical discoveries lie underfoot. It was incredible to see just how deep many of the excavated structures at Stratonikeia were buried under the earth. Mosaic tiles, columns, piles and piles of random architectural decorations carved in stone are arranged in rows creating a new topography in this still unfrequented archeological dream come true.
