The Sunken Ruins of Kekova Island: Turkey's Ancient Lycian Federation
Sea, near ruins of the ancient city on the Kekova island, TurkeyPhoto by depositphotos.com Centuries before the Byzantines, Romans, or Ottomans ruled Turkey, a remote corner of the country was home to the world’s first democratic federation, the Lycians. The Lycians were a peaceful federation of city-states that dated back to around 2000 BCE and included the city of Simena, a bustling sea-trading…

Along the edge of Turkey's Kekova Island lie the submerged ruins of the buildings and walls of an ancient city.  Archaeologists believe that this city is a Lycian sea port from which maritime trade was conducted with other Lycian towns and with various parts of the Greek world.  Because of the threat of piracy, the port was probably heavily fortified and served both as a refuge in times of peril and as an early warning post of danger heading to the Lycian mainland. Along the mainland coastline, along from Kekova, are the chest-like sarcophagus tombs of an ancient necropolis, near the ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Teimiussa.  The bay of Teimiussa, surrounded by green hills, made an excellent harbour for Lycian ships.  Further down the coast are the ruins of ancient Simena, which lie below the crenellated ramparts of a ruined hilltop castle, held by the Romans and later by the Byzantine Empire.  Inside the castle is a a small rock-cut theatre, used during Roman times.  A lone Lycian sarcophagus stands in shallow water below the town. Over the centuries Lycia's strategically important location made it a tempting conquest for a succession of Mediterranean powers: Persia, Greece, the Macedonian Empire, the Byzantine Empire and finally the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire.  Lycia also suffered from natural disasters, such as a devastating earthquake that partially sank the sea port on Kekova Island.  Rebuilt and still flourishing during the Byzantine Empire, the port was abandoned by the end of the 8th century because of pirate attacks and Arab raids.  The Lycian coast was not cleared of piracy until the British Navy began patrolling the area during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Kayaking over the Kekova's Sunken City
The warm sun beats down as we paddle our double kayak across the glassy Mediterranean Sea to the island of Kekova. The now uninhabited island houses the remains of Simena, and ancient Lycian sea-side trading city. On shore pieces of homes, tombs, an early church and a staircase down into the water are still visible after a series of earthquakes destroyed the city in the 2nd Century causing it to sink beneath the water. Kayaking over the turquoise clear water, large pillars from the city long ago pass by beneath the boat of this now specialty protected area of Turkey's past.

Kaleköy lies in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, namely Üçağız, 15km drive from Demre, Antalya. • This Lycian necropolis of Simena has been home to many civilizations including Byzantine Empire era outpost of the Knights of Rhodes (formerly St. John). • Although the ruined city was rebuilt by the Byzantine Empire, later on it was abandoned due to incursions of the Arabs. • The name Kekova derives from Turkish “Plain of thyme” is encompassed by the Island of Kekova, villages of Üçağız, Kaleköy and four ancient towns of Simena, Aperlae, Dolchiste and Teimioussa. Üçağız is founded upon Tiemussa and both Simenna and Teimioussa have large necropolises. • The region is accessible by both land and sea and is a very popular attraction among tourists. # ~~~~~ Camera of choice: Sony #A7M3 #A7III • SEL2470GM ~~~~~ Please follow me @was.once.taken © Mehmet Tekin All of the photos shared are my own. This is the day where we are cruising the Mediterranean on a wooden boat all day in the Gulet area. So looking forward to this trip. Day turned out nice and sunny with not too much wind. We stopped in a small bay to swim and I was first in the water. Couldn’t wait! A bit cool to get in but still very nice. Floated around for at least 30 minutes or more before we got out.  Six of us took advantage of it.  I was a bit surprised that more people did not. Lots of people have inhibitions and are just not physically able. That is so sad.
What a wonderful day! We viewed some ancient Lycian ruins along the way that dated back to 4th century BC and had been destroyed by an earthquake. A lot of the city sank at one point and you can still see the ancient ruins of Kekova in the emerald green waters. All along this coastal line you can see site where foundations of houses, stairs and walls are still visible.
After lunch we went to another location to view a tomb in the water at the ancient fortress Castle of Simena. There are so many small bays that are great to stop in and anchor for a while. We  stopped at another location for a quick swim and then off home. The water was a bit rough and we had 3-4ft swells. They brought out yet more food, fruit and cookies and tea. Wow! All in all it was a great trip.
After a small group of us walked up to get our laundry that cost me about $5.00 to do 6 tops not a bad price! We got back to our hotel room just after 4 and a group of us decided to walk into town for some wine desert and ice cream. The sorbet here is to die for and I have not been able to resist it. Hope I have not put on any weight!! It gets harder every day to stay true to the Keto diet, but I am trying! We all walked down to town where they are setting up for a night of festivities to honor their Independence Day. Tons of flags every where and there is a stage set up so I am sure there will be lots happening tonight in town. Big police presence everywhere.
We walked around looking for a place to suite everyone’s needs, wine, desert, yogurt drink and ice cream. Ended up back at the restaurant we were at last night, where we sat enjoying wine and appies.
Then we walked out to the main square where there was a parade going on. Very positive feeling and patriotic with lots of flags waving. Stopped for of course, sorbet. So Yummy!
Sat on my balcony typing in my log until just after 9:00. It has been a long day with eh fresh air, swimming and all the sun. I think iI will be in be early tonight. Only have 10 days left on the tour. Can’t believe we are on the count down already. Just saw a small display of firecrackers and lots of horns honking in town. We are far enough away from town that there is not much noise from what I am sure is a big celebration!

The watery paradise of Kaleköy is one of the western Mediterranean's truly delightful spots, home to the ruins of ancient Simena and an impressive Crusader fortress perched above the hamlet looking out to sea. Within the fortress, the ancient world's tiniest theatre is cut into the rock, and nearby you'll find ruins of several temples and public baths. From the top you can look down upon a field of Lycian tombs, and the old city walls are visible on the outskirts. Kalekoy Antalya'ya bağlı Kas ve Demre ilçelerinin arasında yer alır. Detailed navigation guide to yacht charter experience in Turkey
Tumblr media
The best way to describe a gulet secret document is as follows .....
The Gulet (pronounced “goo-LET”) is a traditional wooden craft boat with comfortable, well-hidden rooms and a generous size. And it is the most authentic way to experience the beauty of  Gulet Charter Turkey Turquoise Coast.
This handmade boat will serve as a vacation home for a week on the southwest coast of Turkey, following ancient sea routes in stunningly beautiful harbors and across the seas leading to small islands like a gemstone. The Mediterranean, home to sunken cities, pristine caves, living harbors and islands full of the ruins of past civilization than the best of the sea, and we think there is no better way to do this than with the company of local people.
A week-long hike can take you to a beautiful coastal mountain range between Marmaris and ancient Knidos, allowing you the opportunity to hike the peaks of the walls of Bozukkale and enjoy the local style of Quaint Bozburun or nearby Selimiye. You can wander the paved streets of Old Datca and take a handmade souvenir, or go to the real open markets near the port of Datca and sample local almonds and honey. At the end of the Datca peninsula lies the windswept ruins of Knidos, an important city in ancient times and a delightful place today.
Heading to the other side, there is the Dalyan River and a beautiful half-day trek you can start, starting with the rest of the river boat cruise across the river to the ancient site of Caunos. At the ancient Caunos Games, you can create a picture of what life was like thousands of years ago ng .before you make your way to the cool waters of Lake Koycegiz. If you wish, have a local gypsy group accompany you on this journey, and play all the local songs passed through the years. From Dalyan, it is a short boat ride to the Gulf of Fethiye and a wonderful land of ports and coves that make the area one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Continuing along the coast, the island known as Gemiler Island has a rich history and invites to explore, and at the very least, a place to watch the sunset. Many travelers enjoy watching the sunset over the Mediterranean with a glass of champagne. The next day, it is still in the morning sailing past the Cape Seven and entering the Kalkan. Kalkan, Kas and Kekova are the next three telephone ports, each with its own unique charm. Kalkan has beautiful old houses with colorful bougainvillea spilling balconies, Kas has plenty of luxury shops and restaurants and offers many local nightlife. Kekova is famous for its “city” and has one of the world's most photographed palaces, the ancient Simena.
Gulets are ready for boating. There is plenty of space on the stretch and comfort board and each cabin has plenty of storage space and its own private areas. Gulets have evolved into high-tech vessels over the years and hold a complete range of safety and the latest in social media and entertainment systems. Many gulets designed for family charts carry a safety net and life vests for babies and toddlers.
Anyone new to this idea and who will still have the experience of sailing can be sure that this type of yacht is perfect for first-person people as it has a wide range of beams and a round boat, making it very comfortable to ride! There are a selection of "cool" water routes that are also fun and varied and will ensure a memorable week-long cruise on the protected waters of the Gulf of Fethiye or the Gulf of Hisaronu - two popular cruise destinations.
Your staff is there to make sure you are comfortable and happy at all times. Your captain will assist you with information about your chosen trip and provide details on everything you need to do and see on the beach. A Turkish chef, with cooking skills ranging from traditional cuisine to any variety of Mediterranean-style food and in some cases, Asian-style cooking, can easily adapt his recipes to suit specific food needs and preferences. Other key members of staff include a deckhand to assist the captain and you as you enjoy the portable water sports equipment; a service manager for all your needs and another employee member, usually a supervisor or additional manager.
The gulet roll is designed to relax and enjoy new discoveries, including food, history and culture. You may find yourself trapped in a local market, or you may be climbing a steep hillside, or driving a snorker through the ruins.
The local crop remains fresh and delicious, as it is grown in fertile soil under the Mediterranean sun. Vegetables are fragrant and summer fruits are ripe, juicy and sweet. Gulet food is a big part of  Gulet Charter Turkey and that means plenty of healthy vegetables and legumes, salads and fish, tasty lamb and hot pilau rice. Local wines are of the best quality and can be enjoyed along with some of the best cheeses and flavors in the world. You can find almost any type of beverage in Turkey with spring water, sparkling mineral water and fruit juices are excellent.
The days are full of activity of your choice, be it swimming and skiing in shiny water, or sitting on a pointed aft, reading a novel under the awning shade. There are many ruins to see on the beach and small villages with small shops selling handicrafts. Fill up the hours during the day playing backgammon and fishing for something, however as the Mediterranean is well caught you will have to be lucky! When you put the fish in, you can enjoy it, bake it and bring it to you for your picnic. Dance till night, pass the time to the Turkish

Turkey may reopen an underwater ancient city for visitors
Turkey may reopen an underwater ancient city for visitors
The Turkish government has decided to take some measures to improve the tourism scenario in the country. One of the first steps is the plan to open up an underwater ancient city to the tourists.
The sunken Simena city is laid off the coast of Kekova, a tiny, unpopulated island near Demre district of Antalya province. An earthquake in the second century turned the city into ruins, which later…

Kaleköy, is a village of the Demre district in the Antalya Province of Turkey, located between Kaş and Demre, on the Mediterranean coast. Kaleköy faces the island of Kekova, and can be reached by sea or on foot from Üçağız. The village lies amidst a Lycian necropolis, which is partially sunken underwater.  On the northern side of the island of Kekova, you’ll come across the underwater ruins of Dolchiste, an ancient Lycian settlement, which was partly overtaken by the sea due to an earthquake that occurred during the 2nd century. Even though Dolchiste was rebuilt and regained new life during the Byzantine era, the threat of Arabs in the region caused its inhabitants to abandon their town. Only accessible by water, Gulet tours arrive here on a regular basis from Kaş, another very popular seaside town where nature still reigns unspoiled. Even though swimming is forbidden around the sunken ruins, gazing upon them and shooting some photos are quite the experience. However, in Tersane Bay, visitors can swim and take a closer look at the ruins of an ancient Byzantine church, while Akvaryum Bay is also another perfect spot to take a dip in the clear waters. If you don’t want to reach Kekova by a boat tour from Kaş, you can also fly to Dalaman (the nearest airport) and stay in a modest pension in the Kaleköy or Üçağız villages. From there, the mysterious sunken town is accessible by renting a small boat or, the other more highly recommended option, renting canoes and really taking in the sights at your own pace. Apart from the beautiful sunken city in the iridescent turquoise waters, Kekova is also famous for its countless coves and bays as well as the Kaleköy village with its historic fortress.
