Sitting patiently in the stands waiting for the game to start and hoping you will see your girlfriend score tonight, the lights dimmed as the light show was about to start. This was your first ever England game and if your friends from America saw you now you knew what they’d be saying. You could hear their chants ringing in your ears at seeing you wearing an England shirt but you swore the only one you’d ever wear would be one with Daly on your back. You and Rachel have been together for almost a decade; meeting at college then both being drafted to Houston Dash together. When she made the decision to move back to the UK, there was no question that you would join her.

Watching the light show as the flags were rolled out you thought you heard your name being called from a distance, shrugging it off as hearing things among all the noise. That’s when you noticed the calls getting louder and if you weren’t mistaken, it was Rachel.. but she’d be in the tunnel by now with the team? Looking around to where the voice was coming from you were surprised to see her running along the side line towards you. Appearing in front of you with tears welling in her eyes and her hands shaking. “They’ve done it wrong, it’s too tight, get it off me, get it off!” she spluttered while waving her wrist at you in visible panic. Clasping your hands onto her cheeks to quickly analyse her facial expression and behaviour to realise she was in the midst of a panic attack caused by the tape on her wrist being too tight. Looking down at her hands that were shaking, she was desperately clawing at it with her fingernails trying to get it off. Instinctively bringing her hand up to your mouth and ripping it off quickly with your teeth letting the tape fall to the floor. You threw your arms around your girlfriend with the barrier wedged between your bodies to hold her until you felt her breathing had returned to normal, a few tears were shed in relief as the lights flashed around you.

“Can you put it back on for me please, Millie’s not here” Rach croaked with sadness tinged in her words. You knew how she liked the band from Dash and Villa game days - not too tight, wrapped around twice, on her left arm, the letters in large capitals in black pen, written over multiple times to make the letters bold and noticeable.

You were part of the Daly family and was treated like a daughter by her mum and dad so knew how much Rachel adored her father. You’ve been there every difficult step of the way, it was you who suggested the tape bracelet when he first passed and now in this moment of panic you were putting it on her for the first time for an England game.

It was a whole process, but one you and Millie had down to a tee and with her bestie injured, she had to enlist another teammate to help her with it - someone that hadn’t been as knowledgable when it came to your girlfriend’s match day quirks. Rachel passed you the roll of tape that she had in her pocket as you unravelled enough and used your teeth again to tear it. “Be careful, don’t break them” her hand softly stroked along your jaw line. “Someone didn’t bring any scissors did they” you joked which raised a small smile from your beauty. Gently wrapping the tape around her wrist as she watched you seal it intently. You then asked a fan nearby if they had a sharpie and carefully wrote DAD on the inside of her wrist, bending down to kiss it then raising her arm up to her lips for her to kiss it too. Rachel’s eyes never left yours as you emotionally anchored each other, your connection so strong you could read each other like a book. “Is that better?” Rachel nodded gently “I love you so much”, “I love you more, now go score for him” holding her wrist towards your lips for one last kiss before running back to her team who were starting to lead out onto the pitch. Swiftly joining the line up with minimal distraction to the others as she proudly sang the national anthem.

To the Far West - Bucky Barnes & Seo Yul #1

“Ahyeon!” Yul called out, his breath catching in his throat as he chased after the mischievous, nimble girl. “Cha Ahyeon!” 

Cha Ahyeon, a fellow mage at the Jeonjingak Institute of Eastern Magic, was unstoppable. A pain to chase after, Seo Yul had been tasked by Cheonbugwan itself to accompany her as the current Master of Magic. Well, more like they didn’t exactly trust Jeonjingak’s actual leader, Park Danggu, to keep proper watch on the Westerner at all times.

Yul agreed with his cousin, Won, who had given him the order. The moment she had arrived from the Far West, he had sensed the overwhelming energy inside her - so much of it that he, himself, felt drawn to take the hand that she had extended towards him to shake - only, he didn't want to just shake it... he wanted to hold onto it forever. 

Danggu wouldn’t have been able to handle her even if he tried. It took Yul, the most powerful mage in all of Jeonjingak, to do so. Well, besides Jang Uk - but he was busy with another task: tracking down soul shifters and other monsters that could threaten the country.

Ahyeon's power was such. Of course it was - it had always been that way, as Yul had heard. The Avengers, a band of Western 'heroes', had conquered the most evil of monsters... and had found the most hidden of magical places: Yul's own hidden country, Daeho. After centuries of staying hidden from the rest of the world, Cheonbugwan's king, Go Won, had finally decided to open Daeho up to the international system and work with the Avengers to keep Earth safe from anything that could attack it. 

Ahyeon’s laughter snapped him out of his thoughts. “Seo Yul!” he heard her call out from across the river. “Come on over here!”

“What - wait…” he looked down, the dirt of the riverbank staining his shoes before he looked back up. “She… she crossed the river.” 

Yul had to take a deep, frustrated breath before he could even continue. She had crossed the river. The river. Well, thank Buddha for the bracelet Choyeon had given him, since he wouldn’t have been able to even dream of crossing the large body of water had he not accepted the gift. 

Letting the beads of his magical bracelet unfold from his wrist and expand across the river, he waited until it latched onto one of the tree branches on the other bank. Wrapping the remaining beads around his wrist tighter around his arm, he jumped and closed his eyes, the wind blowing his hair away from his face almost making him relax rather than panic. 

His feet landed on the ground. The beads of his magical bracelet had untangled from around the tree branch it had used as an anchor, finding their way back to his wrist. Ahyeon stood in front of him, smiling up at him as she folded her arms behind her back, a proud look on her face as she spoke. 

“You did great,” she remarked. “Although you could’ve stuck the landing a little better, but - first timer’s luck, mhm?”

She turned around, walking towards the dark forest before them, leaving Yul to simply gape at her teaching methods for a moment before he snapped himself back into reality and paced after her. 

“Where are we going?” he asked, finally catching up to her side. “This is really, really close to North Korean territory. I don’t think we should practice here, Ahyeon.”

Ahyeon stopped in her tracks, looking up as if she were in deep thought. “North Korea? Didn’t they try to remake one of my suit models that one time?” 

“What - “

She snapped her fingers together, right as though she had finally succeeded in recalling a humorous memory. “I remember!” she exclaimed, continuing her steps. “Tony exposed that Hammer guy on national television for funding North Korea’s prototype of the Ironman suit…”

Yul’s eyebrows stitched together in confusion as he walked in front of her, giving her a baffled look as he turned around to face her whilst walking backwards. “Wait, wait, wait.” He put his hands up in a ‘stop’ motion, though the two still kept walking. “You created a suit prototype at age… eight?!”

Ahyeon shrugged. “Yeah. And those guys -” she pointed towards the fencing that bordered North Korea and Daeho, “- copied it.”

“Those guys?! North Korea is a rogue state!” 

“Oh, you sound like Hana.” She brushed him off, stepping closer to the fence. It was clear that some type of magic clouded the borders between Daeho and the Amrok River. Across the large stream of water stood soldiers stationed to shoot on sight if there were any defectors or intruders - again, what Hana had taught her. But that wasn’t why she was here. 

She pointed at the clueless soldiers up ahead. Yul felt confused as he followed her lead and stepped closer, sensing the magical barrier that had been put up between that country and his own. But before he knew it, the sound of wind interrupted his observation of the soldiers across the river, instead snapping his attention towards the ball of energy in between Ahyeon’s palms. 

“Your king asked me to check the strength of Daeho’s border magic,” Ahyeon told him solemnly, the energy in her palms glowing a bright blue as it pulsed with seemingly uncontrollable electricity, “apparently he’s open to having visitors from the South, but not up North.”

Yul didn’t know how to react. “Wait, Ahyeon - what are you doing -” 

She ignored his confused pleas. “On the count of three, push your energy through the barrier.” 

“Ahyeon -”

“Do it. One,” 

His hands instantly formed a ball of energy in between his palms, following her lead more out of force than out of actual want. Guiding his energy towards the barrier, he waited for her call.

“Two…”

Ahyeon’s own energy seemed to be pulsing with an insatiable need to destroy everything in its path, instilling fear in Yul’s mind as he looked back and forth between her and the barrier between Daeho and the North. 

“Three.”

The both of them pushing their energy against the barrier, an explosion of blue, green and red blasted them backwards against the trees, Ahyeon’s palms intuitively cushioning herself from any collision with just the energy from her fingertips. Yul, on the other hand, was not so elegant - he had crashed against the nearest tree, his head leaning back against its trunk as he coughed in pain. 

Ahyeon rushed over to him, grabbing his wrist to check his energy levels. “Are you okay?” she had exclaimed, her blue eyes showing worry over Yul as she decided to pull his body into her arms. “One… two… three… your core is fine. Okay, good. Thank God.” 

Yul was honestly in less pain than comfort the moment Ahyeon had pulled him into her arms - even if it was only to check his energy core levels - but he didn’t want to admit that he had grown attached to her. He couldn’t. She was from the far West… and he had to stay here. In what the people in her region would call the far East. 

Yet still, he so badly wanted to wrap his arms around her. Keep her close… 

Keep her snug against his chest, just like she was right now. 

Only… just only… 

For more than just a moment. 

Should I? He asked himself. Should I… I shouldn’t. No, she was invited here by the King - I couldn’t possibly…

Fuck it. 

As Ahyeon pulled away, he looked down at her before he wrapped his arm around her waist. “Wait,” he said, his eyes lost in hers. “Wait. Let’s just… stay like this for a moment.”

After waiting a few moments for Ahyeon to budge, he took her silence and quickened breathing as consent for him to keep her close. Wrapping his other arm around her, he pulled her snug against his chest, his eyes closing as he cherished the moment that he knew would have to end soon. 

“I’m sorry,” he mumbled, his voice starting to shake a little. “I know we’re not supposed to be doing this.” 

The feeling of Ahyeon’s hand patting his back comfortingly was perhaps the best he had ever felt since he had shared his last embrace with Yeong, the assassin known as Naksu whom he had to let go of his feelings for out of respect for his best friend, Uk. 

“It’s alright,” Ahyeon murmured into his chest. “You’re alright.”

It wasn’t forbidden to her. No, not at all. King Won had never mentioned during their agreement for her fellowship here at Jeonjingak that she was not to engage in any romantic relationships with his people. It was only forbidden for Yul, because a romantic relationship with her would mean that he would have to leave his post at Jeonjingak and follow her back to her home in the Far West. Because the both of them knew that she was not extending the 2-year fellowship that was soon ending for her. She had confided in him that much: that these Eastern values alienate her. That they make her feel left out… 

That they make her feel like she’s not enough. 

Not pretty enough, not respectful enough, and not weak enough to be a good housewife. 

“You’re pretty,” he suddenly blurted, as if he could read her thoughts. “You’re pretty to me. No matter what anyone else says.”

Ahyeon stood still in his arms for a good moment, taking in what he had just said. She felt like she was pretty enough. At least, for the liberal Western society that actually cared about healthy beauty standards. But here? She felt completely baffled that people found her self-confidence repulsive.

“Thank you,” she said quietly, her hand still unconsciously patting his back. But now, she could feel his palm resting on her shoulder, caressing it softly as if to calm her down. 

The moment they shared was one that did not come often. It had come before, but only once or twice - for it was forbidden for Yul, and Ahyeon simply did not want to give him false hope. 

Explaining the reasons why Ahyeon felt like she had to stop herself from feeling anything for Yul would have to be done by Hana for anyone to ever understand. Her heart, though passionate, was kept locked away with the key thrown down into Tartarus. Inside it lived someone else - the echo of a man whom she had left back home in the States. 

James Buchanan Barnes. Bucky, as everyone had called him - but to her, he was ‘My Bucky’. 

Or at least, he had been.

Ahyeon wasn’t the only one with a locked heart. If hers was cold, Bucky’s was freezing ice. The very few years that they had spent fighting alongside each other without properly acknowledging how much they loved each other were… excruciating. 

Every time she had wanted to say those three words, she always had to take a step back. 

Bucky Barnes wasn’t ready. Not for some girl at the bar that Yuki had told him to hit on, not for his tiny crush on Wanda when she had joined their team, and certainly not for Ahyeon. 

She knew why. Sam had told her: it was because he loved her the most. 

And to him, everyone he loved… he would eventually lose. 

“I’m sorry,” Ahyeon’s voice cut through the silence as she slowly pulled away from Yul. “We got carried away. My bad…”

But Yul’s eyes weren’t on her. They were looking behind her - in the direction of the soldiers stationed behind the Amrok River, who had no idea that there were two extremely powerful mages watching them from across. 

“We got carried - away… who… is that?” Yul asked, his words trailing off as he moved closer to the barrier to get a better look. “Is that…”

Ahyeon couldn’t believe her eyes. The moment she had turned around to face the barrier, she had expected to see unknowing soldiers drinking makgeolli and ignoring their stations. 

But instead…

She saw him.

Debut Album of The Strokes' Is This It and Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights.

TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS

New York City was in transition in 2002, the devastation of 9/11 still lingered but a new sense of goodwill and compassion flowed through the city with dozens of bands reanimating a faded glory that had come to define the Giuliani era. Arriving after several well-regarded EPS that honed Interpol's Sonic and sartorial sense, it's possible no album captured this moment as vividly as their debut turn on the bright lights. Interpol took shape at NYU in the late 1990s where the band formed partially as a result of mutual fashion appreciation. Frontman Paul banks had come across bassist Carlos dangler in their dorm wearing skin tight black clothing and a giant crucifix. Meanwhile guitarist daniel kessler had already gotten to know Dengler in a world war 1 class after approaching him with a compliment about his shoes, and the trio eventually found replacement drummer Sam Fogerino while he was working in a used clothing store. Soon after coming together, the group started to jam at Funkadelic studios, PDA was already in embryonic form by then. After hustling in the NYC circuit and recording here and there, a chance meeting with Emma Pollock of the Delgado's led to the release of an Interpol EP in 2000 on the esteemed chemical underground label. On the heels of the EP success and in the midst of the post strokes gold rush in New York City, Interpol scored a deal with Matador Records then home to bands like Belen Sebastian, yo a tango, and pavement. Chris Lombardi of Matador claimed that he was most impressed by the business-like manner with which the band conducted themselves the suits first and foremost. Interpol decided to record turn on the bright lights at producer Peter Quedas's home studio in Bridgeport Connecticut to avoid all of the temptations New York City had to offer a hot young band while Cadis has gone on to produce the national, Frightened Rabbit, and Yan C, his most recent credit prior to turn on the bright lights was engineering the get up kids on a wire. Sessions were contentious Carlos D had wanted more keyboards, more nights on the town, and the title of the record to be celebrated baselines of the future. If banks had his way, PDA wouldn't have even made the record. However Quedas protested and told him that's their hit single, which it was. Quedas was not enthused with the new, until the final mix which had him in tears. But for all the seriousness and grandeur of turn on the bright lights moments of humor abounded. The spoken intro of Stella was a diver and she was always down; was recorded while banks was ad-libbing with ice in his mouth “this one called Stella was a diver she's always down”. Anchored by Carlos D and Fogerino’s hulking rhythm section, Banks created it in New York City recognizable to its citizens but in cryptic indelible lyrics. “The subway was a porno”, “relationships were a bracelet” and “they had 200 couches for you to sleep” when it all felt like too much. Beginning with a crowd stoking instrumental that would foreshadow runs opening for U2 and the Cure, turn on the bright lights resulted in music of unusually sweeping and grandiose gestures that felt foreign to rock music in general at the time but especially to indie rock. It's hard to imagine the transition towards the post-punk bombast of Arcade Fire, The Killers, and the National without Interpol opening the lane first. While local papers would occasionally snark at them as fashion victims and post-punk dilettante, critical acclaim for turn on the bright lights was overwhelmingly positive. The brilliance of turn on the bright lights is all the more apparent 19 years later a beacon that continues to shine radiantly during its city's darkest moments. IS THIS IT

Steffie here, developer for the upcoming Legendlore RPG. What’s the Legendlore RPG, you ask? I’m here to tell you.

Legendlore was originally a comic, first published by Arrow Comics in 1986 and since procured by Caliber Comics, about four people who fall through a Crossing into the Realm. The Realm is home to all kinds of fantasy creatures from elves to dragons, and the characters discover they too have ‘fantasy powers’ – the jock becomes a Fighter, while the bookish one becomes a Wizard, and so on. They go on all sorts of adventures and some of them eventually find their way back to Earth.

This is the basic premise of the Legendlore RPG. You Cross into the Realm, where Steffie the author / game developer becomes Steffie the hairfoot Bard, or maybe Steffie the elven Sorcerer – I didn’t stat myself yet. You can change any characteristics you like. For example I have hay fever and glasses, and I choose if my Legendlore self keeps or drops those. Your identity might not always match your outward physique, but your Legendlore character does. We also updated the 1980’s setting so Realmborn characters represent all ethnicities, genders, and sexualities. No one in the Realm will bat an eyelash at your agender panromantic self.

Chapter 2 – Crossing & Legend

A Crossing can be anything. Storytellers across the Realm sing of strangers down on their luck, selling off their possessions, until they come across a bracelet from their childhood: in the time of their greatest need, that bracelet became a Crossing, the stranger entered a land new to them, and their story began anew. Tales from the Grey Hills to as far as the Erebus Sea also tell of mirrors or pools of water being Crossings, as throughout time many peoples have wondered if other worlds lay just behind their reflections on the surface. But it is not just mirrors, or pools, or bracelets: a Crossing can be a battered suitcase locked in an attic and forgotten until just recently. A Crossing can be a hatbox just as easily as a Crossing can take the shape of a crystal pendant necklace, a porcelain doll, a crayon drawing or folded papercraft, it can be simple or it can be intricate. A Crossing does not fully sit in either the world of Earth or of the Realm: it can be anaction figure just as easily as it can be a specific and easily missed setting on an AM radio dial, just as it can be a leatherbound journal gift set with its brass lock and key. The item that acts as a Crossing can be five dollars or fifty, a brightly colored bauble from a vending machine from a child’s pocket money or a timeless treasure from an attic long forgotten with excellent craftsmanship worth a fortune – if it was ever sold.

Legacies

You are not the first from Earth to encounter the nations of the Realm. The Realm has had Visitors before, and each time these Visitors left something with the Realm: whether it be a new word, or even accidental technology. Some Visitors became stranded and formed their own communities out of an immediate need for survival. These communities can still be found in the Realm, though they tend to be pockets of isolation and have their own customs and concerns even if they are within the boundaries of other nations. Sharp-eyed Visitors may recognize aspects of their world turned into phenomena: in the depths of a forest, they may encounter a glider plane abandoned with vines anchoring it to the soil, its metal rusting, its markings faded under a strange sun its paint was never meant to withstand. These phenomena are considered Strange Things throughout the Realm.

Legends

Just as Earth had impacts on the Realm, the Realm can change a Visitor from Earth. Legends are the destinies Visitors may have when Crossing into the Realm: it is part of their Crossing, part of their destiny.

Each character has their own Legend, which affects the story and is built up through relatively minor actions as well as through more obviously weighty choices. Legends are things like “Avatar of Peace” or “Lord of Dragons” or “Heir to the Mountain”: they represent the destiny of You (your character) and mechanically can resemble backgrounds. Perhaps the You you want to be in the Realm is trying to not spread any more violence than absolutely necessary for self-defense. As a Player, you might want their destiny to reflect that commitment to peaceful solutions and to avoid continuing cycles of revenge and violence: thus the “Avatar of Peace” Legend. The seeds of that legend are there, but how does that affect You throughout Your adventures in the Realm?

That's a life. I know where the things I heaved home, took by air and post, are from - where I got them, where I had them, when. The last one a small brass marked circle on my last finger, the pinky with the initial, that I never take off, that I nearly asked him to get me, just so I could say that, that cost 6 euros out of a shop on a quiet street in Senamiestis. A pendant my father bought me out of the emporium bazaar on Chapel Street in Melbourne years ago, our first trip there together. I remember everything. My appetite so big, this blood so sentimental, this flesh of belonging(s). This life of crystallised moments like beads on a string wound round me like a necklace. Home again I find lipsticks I remember using when I was still 17 and 18, the taste of its purple tint lacquer coming off on my tongue, on the inside of my lips. Vast stores of places been, things seen, people loved, memories collected. They condense into drops that form into stalactites, hanging, stalagmites growing from the floor where they fall. I remember this lipstick next to me I bought in Oslo when I lived there. I remember this keychain from my father. The other day T sent me a photo of letters he'd found from me and my best friend from then; my handwriting nothing like it is now, that a drunk lady at the same table in a bar stopped and tapped me to say looked like calligraphy I could sell for a living. Clearing out the flat to prepare for moving soon, my mother found a box of things of mine from primary school, with notes from people I no longer think about, people who later changed their minds about me, one comment in coloured pen that said, "One bad thing: Don't be so showoffy." But what is there to keep back? Unbridled joy? This life that is made up of gifts? The things we spent on, beings made out of blood, sweat, and tears? To reflect something is to be completely clear - to identify something inspect its elements, whether it's code, whether its structure. I want to be me. The jewel in the crown a multifaceted thing. This whole(ness) composed of wheres, whys, hows, whens, dripping in what's given. Every love, every sound that's passed through, every vibration come my way, every atom taken in. I cannot know anybody else like this body, these things I've seen, these things I've swallowed, tasted, commingled; every intersection, every crossing, every turn revolving.
